560

Similar to MM Telstra deal

Great deal for those who already signed up AMEX 100$ statement credit deal and like to use before 30/12 AMEX HN deal
iPhone 5s 16GB space gray with $30 Optus credit for $369 (locked for Optus) but I have tried it with Bendigo telco and it works. I have been told by Optus tat it is unlocked. It also stated on Optus page

I bought it in store and I received email notification instantly after payment. Plenty of stocks online and instore.

Why say the same thing 3 times over, especially considering it's wrong. Sure it may be in the T&Cs but Amex has absolutely no way of knowing what you purchased. I have had an Amex card for many years and have always ignored the T&Cs and always got cashback.

    • Obvious troll

    • I purchased a Macbook Air yesterday, and the store salesman discouraged me a lot for using AMEX card, when I told him that I would take the risk, he typed a comment on the receipt that "they have discussed with the customer that AMEX offer doesnt apply for this product"

      • What a shitty salesman. Typical of hardly normal staff.

    • +2

I am aware about T&T. But the transanction didn't mention apple and I received the notification so is the reason to share it.

    • +2

You must be new to Amex offers. There is no high risk at all.

  • +2

So these are definitely unlocked? All iPhone must be sold unlocked now right?

    • -1

Locked to Optus. Unlocking fee applies.

    • +4

Optus sales team told me all their phones are unlocked.

      • Not blaming you but I've heard them say this alot without it actually being true.

        • +2

I see. It works with Bendigo Telco and Virgin. May be due to the same network.

        • @azm:

Virgin Mobile uses the Optus network. All NVMO on the Optus network will work with this phone. That includes amaysim too. So you're not just limited to using an Optus sim itself only. I recommend amaysim since it's an NVMO on the Optus mobile network.

      • Not true. Recently bought an elcheapo ZTE from them and paid extra to bagman for unlocking.

        • Apparently it seems that all Optus iPhones prepaid are unlocked. Other mobile brands however are locked.

    • +3

Hey, iphone have stopped being locked years now!

      • +1

Got one from Optus on a similar deal earlier in the year.

Been using it with Telstra. No hassles. No unlocking required.

    • +1

Girlfriend works for Optus for a few years now and she signed me up with the iPhone 7+ and she told me all iPhones sold by Optus now are unlocked.

      • +1

Yes sales team told me the same. All their iPhones are unlocked.

  • Even with the AMEX offer I would prefer to buy a Redmi Note 4 64GB rather than this old fogey.

  • This question is unrelated to the deal but I'll ask anyway. Is there a big step up from iphone 5 to 6? And what is a good price for a 6 local stock?

(I know nothing about iPhones, might get one for my wife's birthday)

    • +2

since 5s, CPU becomes 64 bits, and having fingerscanner

    • +1

I have had the 5s and the 6. Exactly the same performance only difference is size

6s and SE are a big step up going to 2gb of RAM. Feels much snappier (I have an SE now)

Don't have a 7 - heard not much has changed

      • +1

Thanks. In your opinion do you think the price difference is worth it between the 5s and 6s?

        • SE can be had very cheaply on plan. I think as low as 50/month. I think that's where the value is

For single tasks the 5s is fine. Ie opening up photos or music app. I would be a smidge concerned for future proofing though given it is 3-4 years old.

Where the SE/6s really shines is using the internet. Safari no longer has to reload a webpage when you go in and out of tabs/ other apps because it has enough memory to keep both.

          A small but significant upgrade.

I am very happy with the SE (with its headphone jack, small size and relatively non obscene price tag - compared to an iPhone 7 or galaxy s7)

        • +1

@sagiballs: cheers SE it is. Now to find one at a decent price in the next month

        • +2

@sagiballs: You can get the SE for $38 a month with Virgin mobile.

      • +2

7 is actually a downgrade!.. no more ear/headphones

I brought the iPhone SE 64gb (for $596) which has the specs of 6s less a few things I'd never use. Coming from an LG G2 I think its a really good phone and I like the design which fits into my tight hipster ballbreaking jeans. The price differential between the SE and 6s for me is $400 is worthwhile and not so phased by the smaller screen at 4". Really fast OS however there are niggling issues like its not easy to transfer photos and movies to a laptop and I needed to download some 3rd party SW to do so. Never owned an iPhone before but the SE is awesome. Have heard from people who upgraded from 6s to 7 that it really wasn't worth it so maybe go for the 6s/plus or SE because the design is the same and its a decent phone already.

Apart from that its all good. I would buy direct from Apple because you get a 30 day right of return. I brought from mobilciti during their 10% off sale and got TRS refund so the price was right. Also has a resale value which androids don't really have. Overall happy with my choice. The SE may also be a one-off and might no be reiterated in the future so if you wife keeps phones for 3 years the SE now may be the only chance to get one.

Was thinking abut getting another android but prices are really up there. Not paying a grand for a phone anymore. Looked at Sony ZP but was too big and there are issues with faults, if the Tightass LG G5 deal was earlier would have probably got that but there is the bootloop issue.

I have both 5s and 6s. I like 5s form factor and price point so is the reason to get a new one. If you don't have AMEX offer, mboiciti or Kogan might be better option for 6 upgrade.

I do have amex but stupidly didn't sign up to the HN deal. Yes, I know, I'm handing in my ozbargain membership tomorrow

      • Lol. I did the same. So wanted to buy an Apple TV with my offer. Rang Amex and asked where did it disappear? they said it was never saved. :s

    • Not trolling or anything, but why do you have 2 phones?

      • Older 5s was from previous job and screw up wifi/bluetooth antenna while changing battery. 6s also got from a new job so I gave it to my wife as Xmas. No point of using 2 phones :-)

        • +1

Man that's good of you. I want to get a 6s for myself and give the missus the 5s I own.

  • +1

Does apple still making the iphone 5s?I do not think it worth more than $200 even for a new one.

    • +3

Used iphone 5s are sold on gumtree for closing to $200, 16gb; someone ask for $300 even.

      • +1

There's a huge difference between used, and brand new.

  • This deal has been available for quite a while now. Should be closer to $300 for an old model imo. Maybe after christmas…

    • +1

HN cash back expires Christmas Eve . And it's under $300 with it

      • Expires 30/12. HN should have something at least on sale by then.

  • Going via cashrewards i see Harvey Norman Business link having it $12 cheaper. Anyone know if AMEX will still be applicable for purchases from harveynormanbusiness?

Thanks OP, gonna grab one later in the week. I wish this was posted earlier as the price of the 5s must have been $369 for a number of weeks now?

  • Can anyone please confirm it's unlock or not? As i Buying this as xmas present for my uncle.

  • +1

I bought it in store too, part number* on the box is MF352X/A that is unlocked according to everymac

*Order numbers vary by country. MF352X/A is the order number for the 16 GB configuration, in gray, unlocked and contract-free in Australia.

  • Would officeworks pricematch? With 5% discount.

    • Do they stock it?

  • Will this deal definitely run until 31 December? Or is that date a placeholder?

Just asking because I am flying out Feb 24 and want to hold off within 60 days for the purchase :)

    • 31 December is the deadline for AMEX HN Statement credit deal. HN Optus deal availability is depends on the stock availability.

  • According to the Optus how to unlock mobile phone web page, these Optus iPhones prepaid mobiles come network unlocked straight out of the box. You could use it on the Telstra or Vodafone mobile networks if you like. That's cool.

    • yes, but strangely if you call their call center, the staff will tell you that it cost $80 to unlock!

      • The call centre staff don't know what they are talking about.

  • Hi,
    Sorry for the dumb question.
Could someone please advise me how to claim the $100 credit from Amex? What's the website?
I called Amex and was referred to www.amexconnect.com.au website which doesn't have any deal about this.
I have purchased the item in store and am still hoping able to claim the $100 credit.
    Thanks so much.

    • (1) You need to register your AMEX card but that was limited number of cards for enrollment. So the limit has been reached.
      (2) Then you are entitled to claim as a AMEX credit.

      All the discussions are here

      • Hi azm,
Thanks for your response and letting me know the link.
Yeah, it's reached the limit. (:

  • Thanks OP. I got one in the morning. I haven't activated the iPhone yet. I was just wondering whether it is necessary to use included Optus SIM to activate this or not. I just opened up the box and was thinking of using my old SIM in it. Or perhaps I will have to port in one of my idle SIM.

Can someone please clarify.. will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    • You can use your old sim but you probably know that by now.

  • I'm not with Optus. Can I sell the $30 Prepaid Recharge voucher? Or will it only work with the SIM that came with it? They're in seperate packaging.
