Myrtle Creek Caged Eggs 700g $1/Dozen @ Coles Southland VIC

15623

Just came across 700g cage eggs going for a dollar a dozen at Coles Southland (Victoria). Plenty available as of 10 minutes ago, at least 30 dozens.

Not sure if this applies to any other Coles stores so YMMV.

For your clarification, this is not a platform for users to argue for or against cage eggs or any associated issues. If you feel obliged to express your opinions against the availability of cage eggs you are most welcome to start your own thread to voice your opinions.

    • Yeh i'm sure the farmers would be happy about that.

    • Why not just artificially create the eggs? A giant machine spitting out 1000 eggs a minute is going to be more productive and ethical than a chicken farm. I've seen Jurassic Park, get it done.

I buy both, depending on price and what mood I'm in when I get to the supermarket, but everyone should at least know where eggs come from… The chicken

    • Or was the egg first?

I wonder if any meat bargains has caused this much negative attention from vegetarians…

    • I know right

  • Not supporting this deal either for obvious reasons. I don't expect many ozbargainers buy cageed eggs anyways.

  • +9

Supporting animal cruelty isn't a bargain

    • +2

What will your opinion do? Nothing

      • +6

What a great attitude to have.

        • +1

It's appropriate in this context; all of the edgy self-aggrandizing on OzBargain won't make a single bit of difference.

      • +2

Well actually opinions are what change people's minds to think differently.
"Supporting animal cruelty isn't a bargain" isn't a rude or offensive post, so what does yours have to be?

        • -1

Either way their lives will end cruel-y

  • +2

Mass produced caged/free range eggs taste the same.

We have an old lady that drops in free range eggs for us at work. Has a few chickens and brings in a few dozen when she has them.

Those are proper free range eggs. The taste, the smell, the color, they are absolutely brilliant to eat.

  • +5

Why did the chicken cross the road?

To get a dozen eggs for a buck.

      Too soon.. too soon

      That wasn't a funny yolk.

Nah, it's all a bit of craic.

  • 2 for $5 in cairnlea (Vic)

    • +3

I am glad I don't live in Vic, $2.50 per egg!

      • a dozen

  • The most ironic thing about this regarding chicken lives matter are that quite a few of these people would be pro murder of unborn babies. I personally do prefer free range organic food when I can get it.

    • +7

quite a few of these people would be pro murder of unborn babies

…woah. didnt see that one coming!

    • djccharliek and expert of abortions, do elaborate.

    • The most ironic thing is that you think you're better because you eat a slightly more moral food than some people. Most animal products come from a bad environment (factories, dark sheds, overcrowding, males being killed) so stop trying to make other people feel bad when you're just as immoral.

      • Not everyone does. Personally I hunt all my own meat, ethically kill the animal and say a thanks/prayer to the animal for supplying me with sustenance.

    • Strange analogy. I think only hens are kept in those cages.

  • +2

Wow, what an eggsplosive deal and everyone is riled up and ready.

  • +2

I love the taste of cruelty in the morning.

  • -5

Cant wait for the day these torture eggs are banned.

    • +2

And free range are fine? If you really cared you wouldn't eat animal products at all.

    • +1

      invalid neg vote though.

  • +6

Funny everyone trying to be so "ethical" and "morally superior" saying cage eggs are bad. But they happily buy free range eggs and most likely still eat meat and other animal products. Most industries that involve animals treat the animals badly and the animals live a really bad life.

Caged or not, the chickens are still treated badly. Stop trying to make yourself feel less guilty by saying you're moral because you only eat "free range" eggs.

    Enjoy the bargain

  • +3

Cage eggs shouldn't be produced anymore.

    • Humans shouldn't be produced anymore….

    • +1

Agree. But these eggs have already been laid, if you don't buy them the hens would have suffered in vain. And if they only ever sell for $1/dozen then it's a matter of time before they stop producing them.

  • +1

This is what Hungry Jack's Facebook used to look like.

  • +4

Awesome deal, personally I hate caged eggs but the deal is a great one +1

to all the Neggers go pluck yourselves.

  • -2

The more you buy these eggs the more they are gonna produce them :(

    • +1

Wont work. They'll find a way to label them "free range".. maybe let the chickens out of their cage once or twice a day and suddenly its free range.

I don't buy into the free range. Most of those conditions arent even better due to over crowding.

    • +7

      For a dollar?
I think the social justice warriors would do well to remember that when a deal becomes good enough for this place, it's already past the point where it can change the minds of the decision makers. Nobody runs a business to produce bargains. That's just not how it works. What they might do is make mistakes, or use loss leading tactics to get new buyers in the door. We take advantage of those mistakes or marketing tactics to get good value for money. In this case, its a mistake - they ordered too many caged eggs, and now they are about to expire. They either sell them for a severly low price or throw them away.

Certainly, if you don't want to be supporting cruel practises you should avoid buying caged eggs, but at this point it doesn't matter.

All the neg voters here are doing is attacking kaptnchaos and achieving nothing productive except to discourage him from posting in the future.

      • +3

        Well said

    • invalid neg vote though.

  • +1

    Clucking deal!

  • These creatures are just dinosaurs that we seem to disneyfy. They are cold blooded flightless birds and they're tasty. Cya

  • +1

I reported pretty much all negs as innapropriate use of neg vote but mods didn't care. That is funny considering that most of the times when someone negs an uncontroversial deal then they will assess and most of the times revoke a neg vote. So anyone knows that cow milk comes from “caged” cows as they cannot move whilst being milked? Btw, unethical/immoral != / <> (does not equal) illegal!

  • +3

+ve vote just to hurt the feelings of the anti caged egg people. Go whinge elsewhere.

  • -5

A Neg for Coles for being the only Australian supermarket chain to not pledge to stop stocking caged eggs.

    http://www.animalsaustralia.org/features/6-supermarkets-can-…

    • +4

It is reasonable for them not to pledge.
There is no standard on free range currently, so how do you know if you are actually getting free range eggs
Also can you provide information from a less biased site. Any article on animalsaustralia will be biased and pro-animal.

    • +1

They still sell free range eggs. Unless there's a new standard on what type of eggs are sold in Australia then I don't see why Coles has to ban one variety of eggs.

  • +4

To those who neg vote this deal for caged eggs, do u actively avoid all products containing eggs unless they specify using free range eggs?
This will include mayonanaise, anything battered, most desserts, burgers?

    • +3

What about electronics made from harsh working environments in China, or kids being laboured to make cloths in Pakistan, Bangladesh and such..

No but that's right these people are so moral that they only care about chickens. Yup.

  • +3

Stop complaining there just eggs eat them

  • +8

This deal probably has the most incorrect use of negative votes I've seen in my time on Ozbargain. If you feel it's ethically wrong then voice your opinion in the comments but it doesn't deserve a negative vote. The guidelines clearly state that a negative vote should only be used if the deal is not the cheapest available, the product is defective or there are major issues with the retailer. None of those guidelines fall under this deal. I'm surprised the mods are allowing this.

    • +3

      exactly, I agree.
Hope you have gone through and reported all of them. Not agreeing with Coles or caged eggs isnt a valid neg. $1 is a bargain compared to other egg prices.

have a great new years folks.

    • Yep and the mods have only removed a select few negs. I reported a couple of others and no action was taken for those.

  • +2

What an eggcellent bargain, I might get up at the crack of dawn and go to my Coles to get some, hopefully it is not an eggclusive to Southland.

  • +1

If a cage is good enough for my kids it's good enough for chickens

  • +2

$1 a dozen isn't making a profit, just the store getting rid of them.

Buying them won't promote more cage eggs.

  • People whinge about cage eggs. Nek minit they are eating a roast chicken. Makes sense.

  • No point arguing. Discussion is PERMANENTLY broken. You can't unscramble the omelet.

    • +1

But you can buy more eggs and make a new one

  • -2

    Don't buy caged eggs

    • -1

Thanks for telling us what to do.

  • +1

I felt guilty about the treatment of the hens, so I bought a chicken coop and a couple of hens. I let them run around the yard each day.

The eggs tastes better and are happy hens.

They are a good investment. $10 bag of pellets from Safeway lasts a month and they eat kitchen scraps as a treat.

They also have personalities, one of them thinks it's a dog and will jump on my lap when I'm having my morning coffee.

Everyone buy your own hens and don't support this egg industry.

  • +1

Thanks OP, I went in to get a few cartons and found they also had a special on bacon and roast chickens.

Afterwards I felt a little depressed as I realised the $6 roast chooks were probably going to be tough as leather after spitting out so many eggs.

    • -1

Thanks, are the $1 cartons still there in Southland?

      • Not sure, I forgot all about the eggs after I bought 1kg of bacon & 5 roast chooks.
