Not that I am aware of. Why not do it for the free $40 at least? You can close the account anytime after you get your money.

This account has this nice feature, you can have automatic debits/scheduled payments from the savings account (which is automatically opened with the transaction account). That way, whatever money is in the savings account is earning interest, until the debit/payment date. No need to transfer money to transaction account for such purpose. I have been using this a lot. Really handy! :-)

Hopefully, this means you can leave the money for the automatic debits in the savings, and not rely on the overdraft (which you may do, if payment is made from transaction account, and funds need to be transferred from savings account).

Edit: Found the below section here, in case it is relevant:

      Overdrawing your Account

There is no overdraft facility offered on Macquarie Transaction, Platinum Transaction, Offset or Savings Accounts. If your Account has a negative balance, you will be charged interest at the overdrawn rate of 16.40% pa. Refer to section 9 (Overdrawing your Account) of the Macquarie transaction and savings accounts terms and conditions for further information.

So, pretty steep interest rates if account is accidentally overdrawn.

  • Got paid!

Thanks OP and OzBargain, nothing better than a free money deal. :D

  • Never got paid.

  • I spent $250 exactly and still haven't recieved the money yet. Do I have to spend more than or does the $250 count. Has anybody else in this situation got the money yet? Made the purchase at the beginning of Feb.

    • In exactly same situation, partner and myself still waiting, purchases for $250 made early Feb.

Woah, just checked my account and got credited $520! Thanks OzBargain!

  • Just a word of warning for anyone contemplating opening a Macquarie transaction account.

I opened one and transferred a small amount into it no problems from Bankwest. I then setup my pay to be made into the new Macquarie account (from a big 4 bank) and confirmed all the details etc were correct. 1 month later my pay had still not been received into the Macquarie account and it was confirmed that 'somehow' it had been lost and they'd never received it.

Magically they called me up one day to say they'd 'found' the money and would credit it into my account immediately which they did however they never elaborated on how or why the money was lost. So I transferred the money straight out and closed the account.

Any bank who magically loses your money for over a month and we are talking in the $3-4k range then somehow finds it with no explanation has a vote of ZERO confidence from me. So be warned!

  • spend more than $250 in one transaction or spend $250 in one month with many transactions more than $250?

    • many transactions in one month totalling <$250

      • Thank you for answering :)

  • Great to here 2nd batch of payments coming through!

  • +2

My partner and I still haven't received the $40 in either account, we signed up soon after this was posted and met the qualifying spend. Think I used the referrals of Turd and the OP. Hopefully it will come soon. The categories bit is interesting in the online banking, I paid my rates at the council which it categorised as "leisure" (quite the opposite).

    WORST BANKING EXPERIENCE EVER!!!!
opened an account under this promo, one night I get a notification through the mobile app that a transaction was denied - someone tried to use my card in another state! but lucky I didn't have enough balance for their purchase. I don't know the correct process is if something like this happens, but they didn't seem to care to tract down the location of the transaction and file a report, they just kept on saying they can issue a new card. Never had this happen before so i decided to cancel my account, called them up and the guy says to close an account you have to write them an email stating the reason for cancellation plus attach ID plus a cash withdrawal form from their website. Regret opening this account for all this trouble.

    • +1

there is also a $10 fee on that cash withdrawal form. I will just leave the account zero!

      • Same, crazy process to close the account. Couldn't believe it. Didn't even have to show ID to open the account!

i was trying out the cba atm today with the debit card, after i input my amount in and press ok, the screen shows a message that "this service will charge $2.00" and also your (macquarie) might occur a charge for this transaction.

    anyone else have this problem?

  • got over $400 in referral credits and i think its still rolling in?. is the referrals links still active and is their a limit? wife has account too but never got emailed a referral link how does one get one apart from the email?. best promo ever!
