20% off Telstra Go Mobile Plus BYO $50 M Plan for $40/Mth: 10GB, $1000 Calls (Unlimited to 10 Countries*), 12mth Term [UNiDAYS]

910

Hi all, same as previous post here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/285570

So the deal is $40 per month, $1000 calls/text and 10gb data.

FYI I managed to get an extra 3gb by talking to telstra online chat. They said I would need to chat to them again, quote my reference number and have the extra data added manually. Good luck!

Unless you need Telstra network Optus current $40 plan is much better value.

    • Optus network (Positive or negative)
    • Unlimited calls
    • 12Gb data
    • 300 minutes of international calls
    • $20 off if you have an eligible Optus service
    • 10% off if you're a student
    • unlimited texts within Australia and to overseas as well

    • +8

it isn't as good as the optus deal on paper, but better coverage and free AFL live pass makes it a better deal for some (me included)

      • +4

Plus Telstra Air, which can be quite useful if you need access to high speed connections every now and then (Air hotspots at Telstra owned shops have fibre speeds). Also good for keeping data usage down when you're out and about and in range.

        • +1

I currently have cable and it includes tessera air.

Found it totally utterly uses less overseas.
Herr even if I stand in front of a tessera shop it doesn't work

        • +1

@hellohello123: Go to a different Telstra shop. I got this speed from the bench outside Telstra Chermside.

        • @eug:

          Wow that's ridiculous

        • @hellohello123:

Plus you need to make sure that it is Telstra shop owned as they get the full speed.

        • Plus free Apple Music (with un-metered usage) and if the Promo is still running, possibly 6 months of Netflix as well.

If you don't use those it's moot, but my household use both so have really benefited from our two Telstra plans.

        • @hellohello123: I'm with you there. Completely useless overseas even though their WiFi map showed that there were plenty of hotspots around.

        • +1

          @yellowrush:

Yeah when I went overseas I thought I might get away without getting a Sim. But after trying to get to one Hotspot. It didn't work. I judt gave up.

          It seems good in theory

        • @bargainparker: This is key. Use the Telstra website to look up your local stores - if they have an email address that ends with @team.telstra.com.au, then they're likely to have a fibre connection. The other ones are franchisees and they tend to have much slower connections.

      • with optus, you can get Premier league and cricket. also cheap ticket to the movies and other events. I got a free telstra sim and a optus sim, best of both worlds. With telstra sim, you can get early tickets for Brazil vs Argentina match.

    • Depends what you consider as good value. Optus reception is worse than Vodafone where I commute and at home. Not even 1 bar at home. It's like their Cable service worse than Telstra

Seriously, Telstra is selling a plan where you pay $40 a month and the calls and text are not unlimited PLUS it's contract? GTFO.

Also as per usual it's in a made up currency which makes the plan difficult to compare to others oh wait no it doesn't because unlimited calls on other providers.

    • +2

and the calls and text are not unlimited

I really wonder how many calls/sms people use nowadays for non-business purposes. Are unlimited calls and smses just a marketing gimmick nowadays?

      • +19

It's all about the data (and a little about the SMS'es) these days.

Everyone is facetiming (data), messenger calling/texting (data), whatspp/viber (data) - $1000 calls is probably ample for most people.

      • +2

It is a gimmick, I hardly use $100 worth of calls per month these days, it is all about data.

    • It's 1000 minutes ($1/minute or part of), so you get around 30 minutes of calls everyday. Should be enough if you actively use Skype/FaceTime/etc rather than calls.

      Still agreed though.

Jeenee is the go if you want to call outside those 10 countries.

Month to month - $30 on Optus 4G network

8GB of data. Unlimited calls/mms/sms within Australia plus $300 of international calls - not limited to 10 or 30 countries

    • -2

Where is is deal on the optus website?
Or is it now replaced by the $40 online deal?

      • He said Jeenee. They use the Optus network.

  • This deal makes the 10gb $42.50/mth for 24mth plan that I went on look sadder n sadder. :(

    • +2

Doesn't hurt to ask if they're willing to recontract you. They may waive the period if it means signing you up for a new longer contract.

  • This deal is only for students. What happens if you are not a student? Also where is the reference number that you talk about? Optus maybe cheaper but it still has very poor reception compared to Telstra too. Telstra also has better speeds.

    • you'll have to negotiate with a chat agent to get a unique ref number.

      • I just was on Telstra chat and the person wouldn't help me at all and said to order it online and wouldn't help.

        • did you choose Disconnections in the options before the chat started? I told the agent that i was on prepaid, wanted a better contract, can you match optus' $40 12gb deal etc etc. they wouldn't budge on the unlimited calls/text though.

  • This come with visual voicemail service?

  • Says, "Offer for UNiDAYS members only" - only for students, then, by the looks of things? I might have gone for it, otherwise, because my reception on the train to/from work with Optus is a bit patchy (Bondi Junction - Chatswood) - although don't know for sure that Telstra is better.

A salesperson in JB Hi-Fi yesterday said that Telstra was having a shakeup of their BYO plans in a couple of weeks. But, it was a salesperson in JB Hi-Fi.

    • -2

I wonder what the shakeup will be. $40 per month, unlimited national calls/sms and international calls/sms, 15GB data? If it is not something like this. It does not deserve the "shakeup". Cause what I am currently getting from Optus is $40 per month, unlimited national calls/sms, $500 credit for international calls/sms and 15GB data.

      • +1

Except Optus's network is rapidly deteriorating and doesn't have Telstra's coverage.

  • +1

Telstra profit down 14pct why am I not surprised…

    • should be 1 GB plan
then jump to a 10gb plan
      25gb
      and then 100gb

all this 4 and 6 gb plans are rubbish, time to give the people what they want and stop milking them for it.

id pay more for a generous amount, if ovo have $50 50gb sim only plans then thats the cost of data $1 per gb…

    • yep been waiting them out… for a decent plan.

I still have my old freedom plus $30 plan…
1.5gb, and $700 of calls…. pretty crap… but I get $30 in google credit so evens out.

Now and then I get another sim for temporary use and put aside my Telstra sim forwarding it to my temp sim.

Vodafone network has improved from the past, but their building penetration is woefully bad… ie no toilet browsing on Vodaphone. I'm right in the city too,

  • What's the best offer a non-uni student has been able to wrangle from 24x7 chat? I'm getting no where and I've tried two agents.

    • are you on an existing plan? if so ask to chat to the retentions/disconnections team. last time i got 13gb, $50, unlimited calls/text and no contract.

      • +1

Haven't been with Telstra (directly) for 10 years, but have been on Boost the $40 plan for the past couple of years. I'm trying to spruik to them that it would be great to have a new user come on board. I've linked them to the boost deal, the Optus deal, as well as their own student Telstra deal…Still no luck.

        Trying a 3rd person now

    • I managed to get 15GB byo L plan for $50.

      • 3rd time lucky, $40 per month and 10gb. 1gb more than my Boost deal but can use the data anytime instead of bonus on weekends.

Not to mention the added AFL live pass.

        Cheers OP.

        • You got this by talking to someone on their chat?

I tried my luck and the guy basically said he's not authorized to make any changes to plans.

        • @ramyeon:

          I went through disconnection.

        • @ramyeon:

Yep, through 24x7 chat, 3 goes it took and was very persistent… eventually got there :)

        • Just wanted to check you got this because you were OUTSIDE contract?

OR…you still had some months remaining on contract and they still did this for you??

        • @MJM: Not sure if talking to me? If so, I was a new user. Cheers

        • @dazzywazzy: Sorry yep I was talking to you. And thanks for the clarification.

  • Anyone know if you can get the 6 months apple music if recontracting, having already used the 12 month offer previously? Would be the cherry on top.

  • Keen to get this x2 but not a uni student. Did people just link to the site and say they wanted the deal?

  • Direct link - unsure if works for everyone:
    https://onlineshop.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/plans/buy/go…

    • This just links to their $50 8GB plan.

      • Ok, then it must track me with cookies. No worries.

  • Does Telstra provide any data pool? I got the recent byo mobile broadband and wondering if it can be data pooled.

  • I'm not at uni but I just started a 24x7 chat asking if they can do a better deal on my 12 month BYO plan that finished a while ago and they gave me an extra 3gb on top of what I get (7.6gb, special online deal 2 years ago). So 10.6gb for me for $50/month.

I started the convo asking how much time I have left on my plan and then said that I am looking to resign for a better deal and mention Optus 12gb for 40/month and she got back to me with a 3gb extra on top of what I get.

    • actually it was only 10gb, still good though!

      • I got 10gb for $40 as a new customer, you need to get back on chat and negotiate another $10 per month off!

  • +2

I upgraded my Plan to BYO L Plan with $70 per month 12 GB Data Unlimited calls to national and International (10 Countries).

To sweeten the deal, Customer service gave me following discount

    • Netflix for 6 months (Standard with any plan)
    • 3 Gb additional data (15 Gb Total)
    • $20 discount per month effectively bringing plan to $50 Per month.

Living in 3rd world area in terms of towers & network coverage (regional Vic) , I would prefer paying few extra to Telstra compare to Optus.

    • That's a nice sweet spot you've hit there. I'm new to Telstra… where do I get this said 6 months Netflix with every plan?

    • Tried my luck with on-line chat. Couldn't get any data added or a discount, was told the netflix deal finished on the 14th:(

Good on you though, what a bargain!

      • +2

Try again ( might be couple different rep) , If you are already customer or on plan tell them , that you overuse your data and you are thinking about upgrading plan.

Once they suggested L plan, tell them being loyal customer , will there be any discount…Dont't mention OZB or whirlpool. Just play nicely and they will offer you discount.

Once they offer discount than you asked can you give extra bonus data to sweeten the deal, so you can upgrade straight away.

Key is just play nicely… And once they offer show them you are willing to upgrade or sign on new contract for 12 months..

  • I could have signed up for a couple of years with my telstra shares paper loss today :(

  • Still waiting for Aldi to do another deal soon. Really don't want to pay more than $25 per month.

  • About to place an order for this. Do we need to select the apple music offer cos when i do it adds $11.95 extra to the price.

  • Just got this offer (minus international calls/texts) via live chat (disconnection). I am an existing Telstra customer, but my contract is due to end in Feb. Also the T&Cs they asked me to agree to says MessageBank Plus (visual voicemail) is included in this plan.

  • Just got scored a $50 plan with 12gb and unlimited calls and sms from customer service. No international call minutes

  • That's weird, after following the link and signing up, it shows my account as an $50 Plan with 8GB of data….

    • You should talk to online chat ASAP

  • Would anyone know whether you could add 2 lines (e.g. my partner and I)?

And is the Netflix 6 month bonus offer actually done or is 24x7 chat mistaken?

I was offered the BYO L Plan ($70) for $50 but didn't think the extra 5gb and 'Unlimited' calls was worth it…$1,000 calls of calls is practically unlimited for me.

    • Got the 6 month Netflix bonus!
