And trs if you go overseas. Wow..

  • Does this have 5GHz wifi?

    • +6

Yes. It is 802.11ac so must have 5GHz.
      Just received mine today.

  • +8

    I have one, they're great.

  • Is the battery at least 6 hrs? School requirement for child.

    • +5

Dell's official claim is 10 hours and Pcadvisor has it at 9 and a half hours of looped video so it should easily surpass 6 hours.

    • Do kids still write in books? Just curious.

      • -2

Is that a joke? of cause they do, I dont even know any schools that use laptops, they bought out all these macbooks couple of years ago and they gave up on that silly idea at my kids high school.

        • +1

Is that a joke? Of course you don't have to go back to school.

BTW they had all sorts of trouble - kids that couldn't write and therefore were slow doing their Year 12 handwritten exams, and just the usual calamity of trying to keep a PC alive. Then there's the ergonomics…

        • @JimmyTheMan:

Any now with more and more testing going online (i.e. NAPLAN/ACER-PAT) the schools that ditched the laptops will be in the same position.

In my adult life, I have never had to hand-write multiple pages. I don't think I've even handwritten a paragraph in the last 5 years.

        • @sletts: Kids these days get more than enough screen time and computer usage at home. I seriously doubt they'll be disadvantaged by online testing.

        • Any top performing school will have a BYOD policy in place. It is a no brainer.

  • Mine hasnt even shown up yet from the last deal :-/

    • Something must have gone wrong - I got mine around 6 February

      • +3

Your talking about 2 deals ago given the last deal was posted on 7th of Feb.

        • +1

Yes I ordered mine on 23 Jan so took 2 weeks to arrive

    • Ordered 9th Feb, shipped 14th, received 21st (today), Brisbane

    • I ordered mine on 10th Feb and it says its arriving on 27th.

      • Actually it arrived on the 22nd, so far I'm happy with it!

  • I bought this laptop in a previous deal @ this price and I love it.

In fact, it has replaced my Macbook Air for schooling.

    • Any downsides?

      • The screen probably, cruddy viewing angles, power button sits slightly recessed and isn't all that tactile so it's a bit iffy to tell whether you've actually turned it on some times

        • The screen is the one thing I'm a little worried about. I might buy one anyway and return it if I don't like it. Thank god for PayPals free returns.

  • Wasn't this with 256 gb before?

    • +2

Nope, that'd be insane at this price! Easy to replace with any 2.5" SSD though if you want to upgrade.

    • Dupe.

  • +9

Got one in the last deal. Upgraded to 8GB DDR3L and it runs quite well. A little slow on some sites but overall browsing is a positive experience. Be careful when removing the base cover when upgrading RAM/SSD, the plastic bezel around the HDMI port is part of the base cover and it's very flimsy - almost snapped mine off.

On a side note, I've installed MS Office 2013 and downloaded all the available Win10 updates and there's 71GB left of the 128GB SSD.

    • +1

Definitely worth trying Disk cleanup to see if you can free up any space. Need to open disk cleanup, wait for it to load, click "Clean up system files" and get rid of all of the Windows update etc data. Can amount to quite a large proportion of storage on smaller drives (I freed ~10GB on my SP3 64GB which, proportionally, is quite a lot).

      • +4

        Did that. Reclaimed about 3GB.

    • +5

Note the stress marks in the plastic bezel around the HDMI port and that it doesn't sit flush anymore. That was the result of only very minimal force.

Also, the base cover has a fake indent around it which gives the illusion that the sides aren't part of it. http://imgur.com/a/0GC1v

    • +1

You can disable pagefile and hibernation to save space. I think each file is 8GB.

    • +4

I also upgraded to 8GB, used a cut up CC to lever the side of the case out away from the HDMI port before lifting the main assembly out - no stress marks and it went back together flush.

Upgraded it to Windows 10 Pro (gives me Bitlocker, GPEditor, and Linux Subsystem), disabled the pagefile, recovers ~1.2GB, installed ImDisk Toolkit and created a Dynamic 2GB RAM drive, all temp files diverted to that.

      Repartitioned the SSD:
      C: 58.5GB (34GB Free)
      D: 50.7GB (50.2GB Free)

Downloaded the 6.8GB Recovery ISO, reformatted the 8.84GB Recovery partition and use it for portable applications, (such as Softmaker Office 2012 which is only 82MB), currently 6.77GB free.

Currently 93GB out of 120GB free with the system up-to-date, most of the Dell software and MS "apps" uninstalled.
Only a few installed programs: DOpus 12, iDrive, Vivaldi, AOMEI Backupper, Keepass2, VeraCrypt (although I'll probably switch completely to Bitlocker on this), XNView, VPN, etc.

64GB Toshiba Exceria U3 MicroSD Bitlocker'd and plugged in for private files.

Still a little more tuning to do on it such as services.

      • Great post. I'll come back to this once mine arrives.

    • Dear Chateau, Wife just ordered one. Can you please kindly advise what SSD and RAM to buy for upgrade? Thanks!

      • These are examples only, you can find both cheaper if you snoop around. I'd even consider buying the RAM secondhand from a reputable seller for about $40.

        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SanDisk-SSD-Plus-240GB-2-5-SATA-I…

        • Thanks! So any laptop DDR3L rams would do?

        • +1

@melfes: I would think so. The RAM slot on the motherboard has a warning "DDR3L ONLY" printed on it. No other specifications are noted.

      • I used a Crucial 8GB DDR3L 1600MHz SODIMM (1.35V CL11) which was $69 at MSY - it was the cheapest I could find at the time, (2 weeks ago).

MSY no longer seem to have it, cheapest they have is Kingston 8GB DDR3L 1600MHz SODIMM @ $75.

SSD: I'd probably get the cheapest because this is OzBargain :)

In reality, depends on your usage case, I'll be dragging it OS soon for a few months, anything vitally important will be stored on the encrypted MicroSD, flash drive (including recovery image), and online. So for me, I'd be happy with Sandisk Plus or similar low cost SSD.

        EDIT: 17mins slow :)

        • Many many thanks :)

how would you check for cheapest supplies?

        • +1

          @melfes: I just used StaticIce

  • Mine was delivered today. Decent laptop for a good price.
    Ordered 7/2, VIC.

  • how fast is the cpu, compared to say, third gen i3? and 4g ram, is it really enough for internet surfing, etc? looking to buy one for my old man (dont want to let him use my own laptops)

    • +8

Still slow compared to a Core i3 series but it's performance is very well suited to just browsing, simple officework and media consumption.

That being said, you can't buy a Core i3 unit at $320 dollars, unless it's second hand.

    • +2

Enough for general internet surfing, but will choke up if you've got a few larger pages open (still usable). Performance would be on-par/similar to a low-power 3rd gen i3 such as the 3217U, but not something like a 3110M.

    • +1

      Try a Chromebook, zero maintenance.

      • Hard to find good deals for Chromebooks…. :(

  • USB 3?

    • +2

      1x USB3
      1x USB 2
      HDMI
      SD card slot

      no LAN port.

  • +2

if it was fullhd for this price that would be neat

    • +3

yeah, also i7 or xeon for that price would be great too

    • If it came with a lap dance and gold embossed trim for this price that would be neat too.

  • +3

I got one from the last deal and it's been pretty good so far. One question - theres no charging light so how do I know it's finished charging? The light on the charger never turns off. Thanks

    • +3

Doesn't take long to boot up, AFAIK it's the only way to check

  • +3

I have one of these. I eventually installed Windows 7, drivers available from Dell, I find it an improvement. Also upgraded to 8GB RAM even though it's not necessary. With a heap of software installed I still have 90GB free on SSD. I have Macrium Reflect Free run a system image backup every week, makes it easy to keep eveything perfect. I'm tempted to grab another one even though I don't need it, it's just such a great deal. I can't remember being more happy with a purchase, no issues with HEVC/H.265 video or any other HD video I've thrown at it. A cheap unpowered USB3 Hub with LAN port completes it. Full size HDMI port is a bonus especially when travelling. As I'm not a gamer this has comfortably replaced my desktop.

    • +1

      Hmm, thanks for all that.

      Macrium Reflect Free. Free. Nice.

I got one of these, and was thinking of killing off Win10 as well, and installing Win7 which i still mainly use. All that Win8.1/10 crap just freaks me out.

      • +2

please don't do that, win10 is alot faster than win7 on ssd, as it is optimised for it.
i would never go back to win7 with pc with ssd.

        • Oh, is it?

What about going to Win8.1Pro then, instead of Win10?
I just use mobile broadband and the automated updates have already screwed me on this thing.

I'm hoping to get voice recognition working on mine so optimisation is actually important…but all my software is still Win7 (or dare i say, WinXP which i still have on another partition - please don't shoot me).

        • +1

          @JimmyTheMan:

If you backup with Macrium you can try whatever OS you like, only takes 15 minutes to get back to your current install if you don't like it.

Windows updates have optimised Windows 7 for SSDs. Win10 boots slightly faster (a few seconds), no argument there. Here's a decent side by side test showing performance and boot time on the same device with a clean install: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pskQl6FT-fY .

I don't profess to be an expert but I can only share my expierience with this particular device, the Dell Inspiron 11 3000, and I find Win7 much better.

        • @jonsnow:

          Thanks for that.
          I'll do both.

I just don't like paying for new software…but i may need to get a more recent release of the voice stuff to get it working with the little processor in this thing…

        • @JimmyTheMan: nah win 8.1 is somewhat a failure, therefore they released 10 shortly after. Stick with win10, see if you like it, it's very snappy.

  • Also some good deals (15-20% off) on Dell's own website?

    http://www.dell.com/au/p/deals/popular-laptop-deals

  • +3

Is this a potato processor for software like eclipse java…

    • Would also like to know.

      • +2

Based on system requirements this is good enough.. But for optimum performance might need more memory…

    • It's not too bad, just a little slower than an old Core2Quad Q6600/Q8200, which was a pretty formidable and still capable CPU back in it's day.

    • Similar to i3, it can decode hvec/x265 smoothly which is cpu intensive.

Dont expect like i5, you wont notice if you dont do neural computational.

  • Help please, applied the code in ebay, it worked but when receiving the paypal payment I realised 20% discount has not been applied correctly, tried to cancel order in ebay immediately but they said too late!

Please help? Anyway I can get this fixed?

    • It's been applied it just doesn't show it in PayPal. Check you PayPal history and eBay transactions and it'll show the 20% reduction in price.

    • +2

Check the invoice in PayPal, the supplier gets the full amount 100% and PayPal tops up 20% your payment 80% often. This has stressed me out before as well.

      • Checked PayPal account, history transaction shows $399 :(

        What can I do now?

        • +1

Contact seller, explain what happened and see what they propose. I overlooked the 20% off code on a Masters order last and they ended up cancelling the order so I could resubmit it.

        • +1

          @bgazer:
Thankyou, it worked! They cancelled my order!

  • How would this compare to my current mid-2011 MacBook Air? It has a 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 with 3MB shared L3 cache.

    Thanks!

    • I believe it is the Sandy bridge i5-2467M which is up to 2.30Ghz
My MBA also only has 2gb of 1333mhz ram and a 64bg SSD

CPU boss says the 2467M has a much better geekbench 3 AES single core score
(1,500,000 MB/s vs 410.2 MB/s More than 3656.8x better geekbench 3 AES single core score)

Though I have no idea what this means

      • +2

CPU boss is a crappy website that should be used by no one. It only compares features but really tells you nothing useful.

      • +1

Average cpumark on your i5 is 2326.
Average cpumark on N3710 is 1871.

If RAM/SSD are upgradable on the mac it will be quicker.

Edit: Didn't see the other reply with same info lol.

        • +1

Unfortunately, I can't upgrade the ram because it is soldered to the logicboard. Weighing up whether to sell this MBA on ebay for $300 and buy this one for a slight improvement until I finish uni and can afford a new laptop…

      • +1

Keep your Mac, even though its pretty old and has 2GB of ram, the build quality is much better and i don't think this will be much of an upgrade.

      • +1

The problem with your Mac isn't the CPU, it's the eye-wateringly small amount of RAM. The only real hope for it is switching to some flavor of Linux. Unfortunately OSX has become incredibly RAM hungry over the years.

Aside from that, the CPU on this Dell is just a little slower than your current CPU, but it can take way more RAM.

    • +2

You'll notice the battery life … but you'll also notice the screen

      • What about performance though?

        • +2

          Intel Core i5-2467M @ 1.60GHz Average CPU Mark 2326
          Intel Pentium N3710 @ 1.60GHz Average CPU Mark 1871

  • Got one of these, installed kaspersky IS, and things are really slow to open, Firefox takes 20+ secs to open….
What AV are people using with these?

    • +1

Avast free or just the built in Windows Defender.

Fully featured internet security suites add a lot of extra workload to the processor and disk. I don't recommend installing these in any situation where CPU resources are limited.

      • As I was too late to get the full free avast posted last week, was wondering if that would slow down most systems such as this Dell or similar compared to the free version.

Am really happy with the free avast on a few different computers of mine as well as friends too.

        Any thoughts appreciated?

        • +1

The free full featured version of Avast just adds more bloat. I used premium for about 6 months… while the Premium version added a hodgepodge of cool-sounding stuff, I never used any of them.

The ONLY thing I found remotely useful was the free Secureline VPN service, which lets you use VPN for about 6-7 countries, which came in handy for overcoming geoblocks.

The rest of the stuff, such as Browser Cleanup, Remote Assistance, Password manager, Anti spam. etc are all extra tools the user may not need (since there are better tools that you can find just by googling), but thankfully you can actually disable these prior to installing. However even if you don't install them, they may still run as a background service.

I now use the Free version of Avast instead of the full paid version, since I disable the extra modules anyway there was no point in having the premium variant, and it uses less resident memory as a result.

        • @scrimshaw:

Thanks for advice. I thought so much.

    • Malware bytes

    • I've installed ZoneAlarm Pro+Firewall, all good.

    • well, KIS was supposed to be one of the fast ones according to tests, and I already paid, oh well.

I wonder what feature of KIS is slowing it down so damn much!

  • +1

Got one from the previous deal however the battery would not charge. The battery itself was OK but the AC adaptor was not recognised by the BIOS/MB. After much consternation they have finally accepted that it is a problem with the computer and not the user. Returned last week - awaiting replacement.

  • why cant they do one with 13" screen but same specs for under $400

  • Cool deal

  • Hi guys,

How does this compare to ? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Lenovo-B4130-14-Intel-Celeron-500…

CPU is the main focus…which one is better and by how much?
