Why so much more money for the 512gb ssd? And why doesn't this price increase apply equally to the 13 and 15 inch models…

Is it because, apple are freaking ripoff merchants?

    Downvotes incoming…

    • +9

so poor people dont buy it xD

    • +4

15" also has a different CPU between the 256 and 512 models

      • -5

Yes I saw it… Just being a grumpy (poor) troll…

    • +3

The latest MBPs also have the best performing consumer grade SSDs available AFAIK, they're bloody expensive and bloody fast.

  • +2

"Me: Honey, the new touch bar MBPs are on special, can I get one?
    Wife: Why?
Me: Did you hear me say new touch bar?
    Wife: DENIED"

Or so I imagine how the conversation will go, I'll keep working on it.

    • +12

Wife: WTF is this $3250 charge on the credit card.
You: it's all good darl. I saved heaps.

    • +3

Wife: You know there are cheaper laptops with the same specs and the whole screen is a "touch bar"?

  • Anyone know if it's possible to upgrade the memory after? Like can it be done at an Apple Store or authorised repairer?

    • +3

Nope, you're stuck with whatever option you bought.

      • +2

As much as I like Apple hardware, all this nonsense regarding sealed units and being stuck with what you purchased from day one is driving me towards either older Apple hardware or even back to the Windows camp.

But at this price, at least it isn't as painful on the pocket.

        • +5

It's the modern trend, a lot Windows ultraportables are sealed these days as well.

        • +1

          @44sunsets:

Is this an ultraportable? The 15" definitely isn't and the 13" is still a bit heavier than the equivalent Lenovo (710s) or Dell (XPS 13).

        • +1

@44sunsets: I believe the ultraportable Lenovo X series are still upgradable on the ram/ssd. I don't expect the machine to be a throwaway consumable but at least give me some flexibility when the time comes to spec the ram/storage for my needs later on.

        • @44sunsets: Agree with the trend in ultra book but what apple did is just next level. They sealed the mac mini.

        • +1

          @44sunsets:
You're right but I'd be paying much less for same specs in a PC.
          Surface Pro 4 - 256gb - 8gb - $1199
          MacBook Pro (2016) - 256gb - 8gb - $1715.20

          why?

        • @gezza90: Worth noting that Microsoft native PCs represents the high-end of PC market…Which makes Apple computers even more pricey in comparison.

        • @gezza90: Macbook Pro 2016 is a new and more powerful machine, it should be compared with Surface book, which is also incredibly expensive.

  • Are there any issues with warranty on these?

    • Nope, Apple's warranty works anywhere in the world.

  • Should I sell my Mac 13 Retina and get touch bar 13 256GB?
Also, I wanna get Apple Watch too. Is shipping from Hong Kong bad? in terms of product quality?

    • Bad in term of local warranty. Australian stocks have a minimum of 2 years warranty while oversea stock only has 1 year.

      • Do you know if you can still purchase Apple Care prior to owning it for 12 months if overseas stock?

      • Does the MacBook from dick smith have that 2 year warranty? It says only one year warranty on the dick smith site.

        • +1

1 year Apple Warranty. Arguably much longer statutory warranty under the CCA.

  • +2

Does anyone know if I'll be able to get a GST receipt for this to claim as a work computer?

    • I have messaged them through their ebay store i havent had a reply yet

    • Why wouldn't you?

    • +2

Just spoke to customer service they do issue a tax invoice with GST so you claim make the claim

      • Thanks! I got a confirmation as well.

  • +3

Is there anything wrong with me if I think computers over $2000 just isnt worth it?

    • -7

No there isn't… everyone on this thread just pays $1000 extra to have a logo of an apple with a bit taken out of it plastered on the back.
You're paying for status… and certain build quality..
I'm just about to buy the 13 inch 512GB…. Its expensive.. but the computer I'm upgrading is a 2009 Macbook which cost about the same price and still runs fine, but there are some apps that just don't work well enough… It still looks like a current style laptop as well.. which is a bit crap in a way because we're buying something that will essentially look physically the same… I think I'm talking myself out of buying it now hahaha

      • +1

I had a 2012 fat MBP 13, 2015 13" rmBP and currently a 2016 15" Touchbar which I bought for the slightly larger real estate.

TBH, it all feels the same - I upgraded the 2012" MBP with an SSD (Extreme Pro - recently linked here and the speed boost was phenomenal!). Try upgrading the HDD to an SSD if you have one free! Besides the resolution difference between my fat MBP and the others, the general feel of the computer felt the same. It didn't really feel like it was a new computer, if you know what I mean?

I just web browse Ozbargain and watch movies though so not a high demand user, might be a bit different if you're a power user.

I love the USB-C on the 2016 though - power, monitors, speakers, usb inputs, etc. all through a single cable. Really good for my desktop use and a simple unplug to bring it on the go.

      • +3

I think you contradicted yourself there…. I'm no Apple fanboy, but you're replacing an 8 year old Apple with another. Sure they're expensive, but how's that for longevity? My past Windows laptops have lasted max 2-3 years then the battery (or something else) is stuffed.

Plus you'll have some resale. I've got an Asus Lambo that cost over $4k when new…. I wouldn't get much for that 2nd hand.

        • Yeah, I know I'm a walking talking contradiction…. Just torn between buying this Macbook Pro or waiting for the Surface Pro 5….. Both have great build quality and I have a Surface Pro 3 at the moment which is the best computer I've ever had… It's still going strong after a couple of years…. I just hate spending money….I dunno what the resale value would be on a Macbook Core2Duo… probably use it as a hand me down…
Damn thats crazy! but then again… back in the day I remember my parents forking out 4k for a 486DX-50!

        • @maddoglee: I remember it well… my DX2-66 could play Doom really fast! And on my 386 ram was $65 per meg (not gig!).

Maybe it'll help if you divide it by cost/per year and then subtract resale price… it would only be a few hundred per year then.

There are a few guys at my work who have done the Mac -> Surface switch, well worth checking out. I heard they're $$$ though too :(

        • @domcc1:
I'm on a Surface Pro 3 now… I'm looking to possibly doing the surface to mac switch with a VM using windows 10.. which sounds quite ridiclous..but with work I have a proprietary app that only runs in Windows….
I didn't end up getting this.. I'm gonna wait for the SP5…. I know I'm gonna get negged in this thread for it.. I'm surprised you have for suggesting such a thing! I got negged in the Surface Pro 4 thread for mentioning I was looking at macbooks hahahha people are funny..
man.. I got ridiculously duped spending $700 for a 16 meg simm!!

    • I'm with you on this one.

    • +1

Depends. If you need a computer for Facebook, Youtube and Email, then yes, not worth it.

But if you need a powerful and reliable machine to do your job, running multiple resource hungry applications 40 hours a week, it might be well spent money.

      • You can get yourself a very high end box for under $2k these days that does that. Pick any of the bargains here for gaming laptops and they are much more powerful than those Macs.

But seriously for $3-4k because it has an LCD strip? hmmm..

        • Yeh, Razer Blade is way better specs for the same price. So hard to stick with Mac… but I don't want to leave OS X, it's too damn good.

  • Vaya shop offers 20% off and it ends up at $3007 for MacBook pro 15" 512gb Grey, even cheaper if you go with Silver version. The downside is import Tax & GST from HongKong, however Rep says there will be no charge at all. Anyone has experience from this seller?

    • Would love to know this too

    • For those interested, the base model 15" touch bar is $2551.20 at Vaya_Shop with the 20% off ($3189 originally). That is even cheaper than the equivalent model from dick smith at $2,795.20.

I have also received a reply from them informing me that they will take care of importation and I will not be liable for extra tariffs.

They seem legit to me as far as I can tell, also with paypal protection it seems like a good purchase.

  • +1

In regards to the 1 year international warranty… couldn't you buy Apple Care locally afterwards to get the extra two years cover (3 years total)? It's A$419.00 for the 15" model. That's still nearly $600 less than the Apple RRP in Australia (with standard 2 years warranty).

    • Just be careful, I missed out on using Apple Care as Kogan bought the machine from a reseller almost a year earlier than I bought it from them. Apple registered this date as the purchase date, not when I purchased it.

A lot of phone calls back and forth between Kogan and Apple and they still won't honour my purchase date and therefore say it's not within the 12 months.

Kogan support is horrible too in dealing with this. They constantly refer back to the fact that it was bought from Kogan HK, not Kogan Australia.

Im now stuck with $340 Apple Care and no warranty.

      • Good warning about Kogan. These models are fairly new so if you did it in the next few months you would be okay. Sorry to hear about what happened though. Must be very frustrating.

      • This will not be the case with these laptops as they were only released <6 months ago.

        • Yeah so definitely register for Apple Care in the first 5 months after you get it.

Also be aware that your purchase receipt won't match up to what Apple has on record. I don't know if that will also cause issues.

      • you should mention magic word 'ACCC'

        • The magic word is NCAT (aka CTTT)

    • +1

      Just an update on this:

In contrary to your correspondence from Apple, Dick Smith assured me the 12month warranty period begins from the date the invoice is generated (They even emailed me this in writing). There is a user over on Whirlpool who received a Dick Smith Macbook Pro today and checked their warranty online, the date showing 30/3/2018. Obviously there will be issues with ACL covering anything after 12 months, but good to know we can get the full year!

  • If this is being shipped from Melbourne, will it qualify for GST back if I'm going overseas?

    • I don't believe it is in Melbourne as they claim, otherwise it will not take more than 10 days for shipping.

      • That's true, could probably take them to ACCC for false advertising.

  • Is Dick Smith eBay an authorised Apple reseller?
Also if I purchase it now, will my 1 year Apple warranty start from the date I purchased it?

    • +1

      No and no.
It's from the date Kogan purchased it from the reseller. The resellers are forced to log every Mac they sell and its applicable serial number.

So you may only have 6 months warranty left when you receive it.

      • +1

Is it worth buying the Macbook pro 13' 256GB for $1715 (after 20% discount) even though it isn't an authorised reseller and warranty may only be 6 months left? RRP is $2199.
Also is AppleCare worth it? It's $300 for AppleCare for this MacBook. Therefore total cost will be $2015. Still lower than the $2199 RRP + I get AppleCare.

Sorry for the questions, I really need assistance as it's my first time buying a Macbook and I am unfamiliar with the warranty, etc.

        • +1

Warranty wise, I think may be a problem, because electronic stuff does go wrong. Apple care on laptops are not as good as on the phones, but with these doggy ones, you may get it.

        • Can not comment on the new macbook pro, but for the previous old macbook pro and macbook pro retina I have used, they can last for more than four years without any issue. As soon as you get the product, you should check online for the warranty date and applecare eligibility. If it only has half year left you can not buy applecare any longer. Raise the issue with Kogan and paypal and ask for a partial refund.

        • Honestly thank you all for the help. The OzBargain community is amazing (first time commenter)

Lastly, is buying from dicksmithau ebay fine? They aren't authorised resellers. I'm not quite sure what buying from an authorised reseller entitles for.

Would I still get the same support from Apple if I ever need to hand in a Macbook for any issues?

        • Could the non touchbar price be beaten at officeworks? Also, is this MacBook the 2016 version, because why does it have less ghz than the older MacBook pro retina which had 2.7ghz? Sorry first time buying too

        • @vanyewest:

It can't be price beaten since it's an ebay listing. Officeworks won't match/price beat. However the best alternative is to wait for a JB Hi Fi 10% discount on all Macs then go to Officeworks and they'll price match after discount then price beat by 5%.

Also to your other question, I was confused about that aswell however I did talk to Apple support chat… the 2.7ghz is an EARLY 2015 MODEL therefore cheaper even though the ghz is higher whereas the 2.0ghz is a LATE 2016 MODEL.

EDIT: I did some research into price matching with Officeworks. Apparently they do but it depends on the manager. Let them know it's not imported and take them through the ebay checkout process with the discount.

        • @easywayy: So as someone in the same boat as you rn, are you planning on buying the macbook they have here for $1715?

        • @vanyewest:

Since it isn't from an authorised reseller and possibly a grey import and the warranty may of started from when Dick Smith/Kogan bought it from Apple… probably not. Also the wait, delivery and all that. I'd rather spend few extra hundred.

      • +1

I asked the guy on the phone and this is what he sent me via email (FWIW).

He was adamant that it starts the day you receive it (not when Kogan purchased from re-seller)
This is what he wrote back to me confirming this:

The Standard Care Warranty period of 12 months; or the applicable Extended Care period, commencing on the date of delivery of the Product. Where there is no proof of delivery, this date will be assumed to be 3 business days from the date of dispatch of the Product.

        • From my 2 weeks of back and forth between Apple and Kogan I can confirm that it is from the date Kogan purchased it.
I can also confirm that Apple have a very low view of Kogan.

Happy to PM my conversations and emails with Apple if anyone needs further info.

As I've found out, it's really not worth the trouble.

  • FML bought the 256 non touchbar for 1978 from jb on sunday :(

btw the touchbar one gets a smaller battery.

    • haha that justification

  • Wonder if i can just add this to my HECS bill ?

  • Any idea if the apple store would match the price (Perth)?

    • No. Apple store does not price match. This one especially since it is considered Grey Import regardless of Dick Smith name (which is Kogan).

      • Worth trying at office works?

        • Nope. OW doesnt Price Match Grey Imports either. No local retailers do unless in error.

      • Worth mentioning, they do indeed price match the usual 10% off sales from local retailers (and can stack with the $100 back to uni gift card if eligible), but yes, definitely not grey imports.

  • Someone might be able to clarify something for me… the MLH32 (15inch pro 256 16) specs online all have the onboard and dedicated gpu listed so i assume that even though this only has the onboard (intel) one in the specs it also as the 450? from what i can figure out you cant actually buy that model with just onboard gpu it just comes with a dedicated.

    • I think all models with 15" 2016 come with dedicated graphic, lowest is 450. 2015 models might have onboard graphic only.

      • thanks!…i assume SSD cant be upgraded on the newer one from what i've read.

  • $1922.91 after TRS for the touchbar 13" 8/256 is ridiculously good, alas still content with my year old 12".

  • If I bought using an amex (linked to PayPal) with credit card extended warranty, does anyone know if they would honour a claim? Or does the purchase need to be direct (ie. not through PayPal) for the extended warranty insurance to apply?

  • If dicksmith is parallel import but they can provide Oz tax invoice, can you claim TRS GST back for these Macbook Pro purchase? Thanks

  • Anyone know what the keyboard layout on this is? Nothing funky - just plain old US-English?

  • Does anyone know when this deal ends?

    • +1

ends tonight on Wed i believe

  • Has anyone successfully gotten order tracked on Cashrewards?

    • I bought the 15" MBP for $3200 but it hasnt show up in my Cashrewards, and we are talking about $50 rewards even at 1.3%, what can we do? thanks

    • Not tracked here either. :(

  • Anyone received tracking details on these? I noticed my estimated delivery time has been pushed back a week. I have only received a paypal receipt for it. :(

    • where do you check the delivery time? what is the current expected delivery time? thanks

      • I clicked the link in my paypal receipt which linked me to the item. Then i was able to select the item that I ordered (in purchase history) and it has an estimated date of delivery. Mine says between 11-20 April.

        • Same issue for me.
PayPal receipt > item shows an est delivery of 12-21 April

However eBay still shows original est delivery date of March 31 - April 7

Not sure what to believe though hopefully the original est delivery.

        • @killjoys:

Yes, I believe the 12-21 April is the estimate delivery if you ordered the item today.

          Mine says 3-10 April

        • @n1ck:

Actually I ordered it on the 16th of March (during the sale) so it's about a month of a wait time if the new delivery est (12-21 April) is anything to go by haha

        • @killjoys: I ordered mine on 19th March, it had expected delivery date of 3-10th April, but now I am not 100% sure, I am going overseas soon and need it to claim TRS, I will contact them. FYI there are more than 100 order for the 13" and 15" MBP, I doubt they will have enough stock in Melbourne, most likely they will need to be ship from HK to Melbourne, only then they will despatch to us sigh…

        • @OZGE:

Perhaps we're actually only seeing a discrepancy in delivery dates because it's calculating based on if you buy it today.

I say this because eBay still lists the original delivery date so I'm wondering if I'm just misreading the information.

Hope you get the answers you're looking for and please let us all know how it goes if/when they answer!
