Good price but impulse buyers hold off. "More like this" listings show slightly cheaper options for me.

It is only better if the 8GB RAM in the title is correct.

    • +2

It has 4GB more RAM for $4 extra.

    • +1

This one has extra 4gb ram, not to mention once you add a hard drive (I added 250gb) comes up as $195

    • A good option for those that are happy to purchase without a HDD or wanting to bump the RAM

    • +1

Double the RAM, and it actually comes with a hard drive.

By the way, if you select the 8GB/No HDD option, the price comes up as $202.99.

      • +1

        @hollykryten

The OP notes "Title says 8GB RAM but description says 4GB".

    • -5

Also it has a spell checker included which knows the difference between then and than.

      • Part of os or the browser?

  • +2

pretty good price for a home server! add SSD (ubuntu or any other linux flavour) and 4tb external drive, install Plex and stream away!

    • +1

Try to install Xpenology, love it.

      • i used to own a synology and I heard about xpenology but decided to steer away from it. is the project still alive and well maintained? I also tried Rockstor but then because of the current state of it, i moved on to proxmox.

        • Been using Xpenology for years now and although it seems they stopped releasing new versions for about a year now the 'latest' version still runs perfectly. I do recall seeing a very new release being discussed in a forum somewhere but it was still in Beta. Seemed to be OK but I'll just stick with the older version as I know it's rock solid.

        • do you use proxmox as a nas? and how does it fair?

        • @baronseng:
Im using Proxmox as NAS & App Server (via Docker), I have several VMs and docker containers, they are running great! I didnt have much problem with proxmox honestly.

        • @ulun-lpg:

Thanks for your reply. I might give proxmox a go.

If you mean a 24/7 server, you should also consider power costs. Save $50/year by using an old laptop or atom/ARM/etc based server.

      • +1

i have mine running only when needed, remote wake on lan and wait approx 2 mins before everything starts up like plex and etc.

        • Why not use sleep mode (suspend to ram) to avoid the wait?

        • @manic:
you are a man of ideas, not sure why i didnt even think about this. Thanks!
i wonder the power usage difference between suspended and actually being powered off (time to dig that power meter plug)

        • @manic:
          mwhahaha i just got rickrolled!

      • Yep - right on the money.
Lot of these older boxes will cost you in the long run…and that's called a false economy.

        • Under load is there still a significant difference?

        • +1

I suggest you Google yourself some CPU comparisons, say with the N3710 that comes with the Dell laptop often advertised on here.

    No WiFi!

    • +10

Wifi is not common on these cheap corporate desktops.
You could add WIFI USB Dongle for as little as $2.70 posted

    • +1

USB adapters are cheap. I recently got a powerline adapter as my pc is a long way from the modem and the wifi signal was a bit unreliable. $50 well spent for a much better wired connection.

      • Yeah USB adapters can be a bit limited.
Wifi cards can be had relatively cheaply.
The best option comes down to exactly what you are trying to achieve with the desktop.

By refurbished they mean it booted and installed windows 7 without crashing. Don't get me wrong I've bought a number of machines from them… and they've always been good when they needed replacement within the 3 months warranty.

    Postage is fast.

    • What broke?

      • +7

HP business grade machines are generally solid. I had one HP with an overheating issue, one with bad ram, and one with a grinding DVD player - all fixed or replaced with no drama. I guess my main point is they don't shake these down before they send 'em out. You can expect to sort out driver issues yourself; they go from a pallet to a HDD cloning station to you.

I've had more trouble with the dells they sell - dell had a really bad period quality wise (some would argue that continues).

        • +1

          Good point.
Hopefully purchasers can identify all faults within the 3 month warranty period.

        • -1

@Cheap Charlie: It would probably cost abit to send back for repairs.

        • @FeRGan:
I would imagine if you could demonstrate the fault via a short video/pictures the seller would send you out the parts.

        • @Cheap Charlie: I didn't even have to do that they sent parts by express post with just one email. The one that was overheating I took back to them the next time I was near the Gabba.

Description also says 100% dust free. Can I put in a Paypal dispute if I was to find any dust in it? :)
(Oops, was looking at the other 4GB PC listing)

    • What they've come from a forensic HDD recovery lab? Don't think so. Item not as described.

  • +6

    Emailed seller, the reply was.
    "Hi

    These come with 8Gb Ram."

  • +1

I am not sure this is a deal, I have been trying to sell a Lenovo m93p SFF that is 1 generation newer (Intel Core i5 4460S) with a GPU (gt 620…. I know, I know) + wireless, keyboard and mouse, twice the HDD size for 250 AUD for a long time now without success :(.

    • Lol I didn't see your deal when I was looking for something a month back, otherwise, I would've bought yours.

    • You're selling second hand, which is admittedly not far off but (probably) doesn't come with warranty. People in the second hand market probably won't be interested in this HP machine prebuild. Socket 1150 i5s are selling around $100 now (or close). A 500gb HDD in your machine is also probably only worth around $20 second hand depending on stats/health report.

I buy and watch second hand hardware.

Oh and it has win10 pro which is good for a prebuild (even if it's an OEM version). Second hand buyers won't really care about this unless of course they are after a prebuild.

      • I sold it with 250 eventually after getting a Gumtree top add for 10 aud.

I could not find a i5 that cheap, I figured 125 I could get for it easily (I actually got a bigger offer), then the ram would be 50 AUD, the hdd 50 AUD (I would have kept it to be honest, it was almost brand new, 30 days max on it) the rest would easily be 250.

I think everybody was happy with the trade.

  • +2

Windows 10 Pro appears to be installed.

I suppose you could transfer the licence to another machine?

Officially costs $299 to buy on its own.

    • +1

Should be able to. Otherwise you can "transfer" by linking it with your MS account and activating it on your other PC and then say "hardware change".

I did a transfer from a VM to a full desktop by this and it worked

  • Just checked with them.

They'll install either Win 7 Pro or Win 10 Pro - whichever you want.

EDIT Didn't check whether this also applies to the cheaper machine.

I would assume it does - they seem very flexible.

  • CRACKA20 voucher works on the 8GB machine, but not the 4 GB one.

But no option to remove hard drive from order on this machine.

    • Well you can always remove it the hard drive out yourself and put a new bigger sized one in the machine, right?. It shouldn't be too hard for most peoples with a little computer knowledge. Just think of the 250GB HDD as an added bonus that you can keep or replace with a bigger drive.

      • +1

I wasn't thinking of it in terms of replacing the HD - I'm sure most of us Ozbargainers can do that!

I was looking at it from the point of view of reducing the price even further if you have a HD sitting around the place that you can use (don't we all?), or if you wanted to obtain W10 Pro on the cheap!

        • I reckon you're probably better off just chucking in an SSD any way instead of this HDD, say a 250GB SSD even if the SATA port may be SATA2, it will still speed things up heaps.

  • bneacttrader updated their eBay listing's description. It is now 8GB RAM and Win 10 pro.

  • Says on page 17 of this that the max power of the PCIe slot is 35w
So you could stick a GT 1030 in there and have a half decent gaming PC.

    • +1

I have a 1050ti in it right now. It works fine. Didn't have an issue so far, though I wouldn't be surprised if the PSU is gonna blow up on me one day.

  • No wonder I am not getting hits on my old PCs which are similar spec. Time to lower the price!

  • The HP posted here, or this Dell (which is out of stock anyway)? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/201682567995

Just thinking whether it's worth buying this HP or wait for another refurbished Dell deal again (they show up around here every now and then).

    • Depends on your needs, really. i5 is sufficient for most people.

      • Well, too late now as it's out of stock. Thanks.

  • If I bought one of these, would it be worth getting a cheapo vid card like the nvidia gt710 or stay just with onboard. I play zero games but watch alot of streaming and 1080p rips. Would also like to start getting more h265 files.

    • No. Integrated is good for video. And old games.
(Beware video card needs to be low profile)

Out of stock, but there are lots more ex-lease HPs and Dell Optiplex on eBay. Great value.

  • +3

I've just updated the listing with another 30 units.

I have brought from this company and the service is good. But by refurbished they seem to mean tested. Nothing inside is new. The first one I got delivered died on day one, power supply died. They replaced it quickly. Second one just lasted past the warranty then the battery on the motherboard needed replacing. Only a miner problem but very hard to diagnose. So don't expect anything new inside the box, it's just a second hand computer that's been checked with a scrubbed hard drive and a freshly installed os. I bet they buy them in bulk lots and put together as many working ones as they can, just replacing faulty parts with secondhand parts. Not what I call refurbished.

    • +1

We have these machines at work, they are a common business type machine. Basically we have 3-year leases, and once the lease expires the machines are disposed of (i.e. sold at auction, and then companies like these buy them, wipe them and re-sell them).

Most business PC's are also left on 24/7, so I'd expect these machines would be exactly like this too. :)

Nothing necessarily wrong with that though!

      • Most business PC's are also left on 24/7,

        Not sleeping when idle?
You can check the "power on hours" of the hard drive in the SMART data.

The only other thing that might wear out is the fans, but in quality PCs like these, the fans will run at low speed most of the time, and last forever. Not like cheap PCs with fixed-speed fans that have the bearings wear out after a few years.

For me, just replace HDD with SSD and you have a good-as-new computer.

      • +1

I would not class them as refurbished. They should be called used. For them to be refurbished I would at least expect a new battery.

  • How well would this work If I bought it and put in a 1050/1050ti for overwatch?

    • I'm having trouble with this one. Officially the "SFF" version of this machine supports a max 35W graphics card on the PCI-E 16x slot, which is way less than the normal 75W. There are no power connectors for the graphics card either, the slot needs to fully power it (the inbuilt PSU is a measly 240W unit). It also supports only a low-profile card too.

I've been reading though that people have had success with higher power cards (i.e. more than 35W but less than 75W), and that any low-profile card should work.

If you want a safe bet, the new GT 1030 only has a 30W consumption, and the AMD RX 550 has a 50W consumption.

      • Someone in the comments above pointed out they have a 1050ti in this pc and everything is running fine. Plus, I don't think even a gt 1030 will be able to run overwatch, especially at max 1080p.

    • good price for 1050ti low profile:

I wonder why people bought more of this than the equivalent same price Dell which has slightly faster cpu. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/182247652603

    • Its running Windows 7 Pro instead of 10 Pro.

    • -1

Thanks for sharing ReadOnly! I actually prefer windows 7 as it has WMC and windows 10 doesn't. This is one of the reasons I read comments on ozbargain, always good stuff to be found.

  • Thanks & any monitor deal please. This one looks nice
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/LG-22M38D-B-21-5-LED-LCD-Computer…

  • does anyone know if i can fit a gtx1050 ti in this? would be a good enough machine for cs-go while im away for a training course.

  • I have no idea what prices are like with refurb desktops. Is this a really good deal? Win 10 pro, decent i5, 8g ram for $200 seems really cheap.
