Dick Smith 6-Outlet Surge Catcher or Surge Shield - $9.90 Each or 3 for $19 - Free Shipping

1271

Ozbargain's favourite powerboard from an era gone :)

Fellow Ozbargainers have been helpful to point out in the past that these powerboards are of good internal quality, supporting high surges (50,000A/1,675 Joules) with a <1 nanosecond respond time. I own many of these after a period of several appliances frying, and they are rock solid and heavy. Mine came with coaxial and phone cables.

I also have a few single-outlet Surge Shields around the house, e.g. for my fridge and microwave. These are also 3 for $19 and have the same surge ratings.

Single Surge Catcher Power Board for $9.90 delivered
(Single 6-Outlet Power Boards also available on their eBay listing for $10.25)

3-Pack Surge Catcher Power Boards for $19 delivered

Single Surge Shield for $9.90 delivered
3-Pack Surge Shield for $19 delivered

I don't think I have seen them this cheap before.

they do look decent. getting three :) thanks

  • can these be plug into another surgeboard/powerboard? I got 8-power one from Aldi last time, but only 1 socket in my room.

    • +1

Yes, but cascading too many powerboards is not normally recommended as it can result in overload. You just have to be mindful of how much you use, but then again this powerboard will protect you from overload. I would recommend plugging the Aldi into the DSE one, as the DSE one is likely to be better quality.

      • the DSE one is likely to be better quality.

You think so? In a race between kogan and aldi, I'd be swaying towards aldi for quality.

        • +6

These are from the DSE era, before Kogan. People smarter than me have taken these apart and said they are good.
I am grateful there are experts of every field on Ozbargain :)

        • @Make it so: The catcher power board only (sold out) or is the quality of the shield also good?

        • +1

@samlor: The shield is fine, the important thing is <1ns response time.

  • Anyway recommend one with USB charge ports as well. I'm looking to get a power board; but the ones in Officeworks were way too expensive.

  • +1

why is there two ported blocked on the board????? Isnt that a waste of space?

    • +3

Probably another model number that they charge more for - but to save costs, build them both on the same machine.

    • +3

Because they also sell/sold an 8-port one, which cost more due to having more components (more MOV's). They save money by only having one mould. Yes, it is perhaps a waste of space, but power supplies / chargers nowadays can be so huge that it can come in useful.

    • +1

Space for fat power supplies to sit side by side.

      • +1

Good point - that's a problem with many boards.

  • are they in stock? cant see buy now button.

    Bought one thanks

  • +3

Bought the 3 pack. Crazy cheap! Thanks OP

    • I copied you. Thanks for making me aware of it! Great value :)

  • Anyone ordered via chrome on the phone? Got a nice chrome checkout thing, very convenient!

    • Yes I did and I was shocked how easy it was to check out

    • Yes me too.. how good is that

  • +1

    bought one, thanks

  • +2

    Out of stock?

    • Updated title. 3-Packs still in stock. Cause, y'know, 3 < 1

  • Good timing! I was planning to upgrade all my old power boards around the house.

Can't go wrong at this price - I bought two 3 packs.

  • Surge catchers sold out

  • It won't add to cart. It says added to cart but when going to checkout it says that there is nothing in the cart. Using firefox.

Do you have to create an account to buy?

  • LOL damn missed out! It kept popping up on my screen that someone in so and so just bought one! It's like it was mocking me!

  • +1

OzBargained I think. Won't allow me to add to cart. :-(

  • +4

I have updated the description. Single boards are still in stock on their eBay listing for $10.25.

    • Just purchased the last one.

Edit: Lol, why would you downvote this comment? I just told OP so he could update the post.

  • +2

Don't bother buying off their eBay store, the surge catchers are sold out - their ebay store doesn't keep stock well, it'll be like that DAB radio again where they sold out, but still kept selling on ebay

    • Perhaps, but normally they compensate. You wouldn't believe how many high-end headphones I got this way back in the Dick Smith era :)

  • +3

Looks like the 3 pack is out of stock. It's showing the add to cart button but nothing happens when you press it.

    • +1

it's working now. Just ordered one 3-pack.

      • It's not. It's sold out for me.

        • wow, that deserved a neg?? shame on you, few others managed to get it.

        • @garylau:

          What?

      • Yeah it went live for me again and I was able to put an order through. It's definitely out now though - the website has updated and now displays out of stock.

      • Worked for me.

I managed to order a 3-pack of the 6-Outlet Surge Catchers about 2 minutes ago.

  • Did Kogan assume the lifetime warranties for DSE powerboards sold pre 2016?

    • +1

No, I went down that path, here is the thread about it - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/284732

      • Thanks

      • +1

I have a major objection to the legitimacy of connected equipment warranty claims and it being fulfilled. Never seen it fulfilled, and is a waste of time trying to become an unsecured creditor for previous DSE branded surge interceptors. Better put an extra few bucks in and get a decent unit like Belkin, because when it blows and doesn't do the job it's meant to, the there's no real warranty for all your connected valuable equipment.

        • I agree, warranties aren't worth anything. Better off buying a quality product in the first place.

        • +1

@steven6: Not sure what you guys are are neg'ing for. These currently aren't advertised to come with connected equipment warranty anymore. So you're disputing the value of something which isn't being offered.

        • +1

          Never seen it fulfilled

Well I had mine fulfilled very quick and painlessly by DSE when my iMac, router and USB hub got fried in a storm. Pretty sure there was no excess, and was all a lot better to deal with than when I had to do a claim with contents insurance.

What is the neg for in regards to this deal?

        • +1

@Make it so: Sorry I was wrong about the connected equipment warranty. I thought they still offered it. But the point about buying a quality product still stands as I have noticed a few comments here about people having them fail and having to claim on a connected equipment warranty that is no longer available.

        • +1

          @steven6:

Agreed. It is even worse there is no connected equipment warranty. If you want to protect your valuable devices do it properly and don't cheap out with these.

  • These used to come with insurance if you did get a damaged product while connected. This is what made it great for me, until DSE when under and they no longer covered. It was simple quick and easy to claim, pretty sure no excess too, making it far better than contents insurance claim.
I have since switched to Jackson powerboards as they seem to have the best insurance coverage terms. - http://www.ji.com.au/products/home_entertainment/

  • 3 pack just ordered …

  • Had troubles adding 3 to cart but after 20th attempt it went through Hallelujah the home theatre gods have blessed my tv nbn modem laptop nas 5.1 surround phone laptop and tv booster today.

    • +1

Hopefully they arrive before the next surge :)

  • saw your edit nvm

  • Just ordered the three pack surge protector - they are still in stock and you can add to cart, HOWEVER, I do worry we've OZBARGAINED this site and we're placing ghost orders, I hope this doesn't happen as its a great deal!

    • Yeah, just ordered a 3 pack of surge catchers, here's hoping

  • Looks like there are more stock for the single and 3 pack.

    • Thanks, updated again.

  • I managed to get 3 pack after a sudden 'restock'. Hopefully, they have enough for those who ordered.

Can anyone recommend any extension leads (cheap but good of course )to go with these, I only have mains plug in my room but planning to use an extension lead to go in other areas of the room?

  • Does this protect Telstra/NBN HFC or would the filter wreck the internet signal?
I've heard your not meant to plug the phone line into the filter if you have ADSL for the same reason.

    • I wouldn't run my internet through them, except if it is a 56k modem :)
But for the tv, it's a different matter if you are on an antenna (read: lightning attractor). I use the coaxial connection for that, and it does not degrade the signal. An electrician once told me that one of the worse causes for fusion in tv's is when antenna boosters (inside the roof if you have multiple connections to a single antenna) receive a surge, which will instantly fry any tv connected to it.

    • I ran my adsl through a single outlet board for years. My NBN is running through it currently (FTTN) with no degradation I can see. Though the protected light has gone out on mine now (two single outlet boards and a 6 outlet) so I need to replace the lot. Shame I missed the deal, though I'd prefer something with warranty.

  • +1

Neither single or triple pack surge catchers will add to my cart (other items will) - I assume they are out of stock (again).

    • +2

      They're playing with us.
Still in-stock on eBay. Hope these good people will receive their goods.

I remember after DS went bankrupt, how it was said that one of the reasons was an insane amount of DS-branded goods being stocked, with enough batteries to last them 10 years. I'm guessing it's the same for these powerboards. They just make them available in batches at a time.

      • sold out again…

  • Don't trust the eBay listing. They're known to not keep stock levels up to date on eBay.

    • +2

Being Kogan, I'm not sure I would trust them at all :P

  • got one last time it was on here

seems to be great so far.

  • +1

    sold out

  • Ah damn, missed out!

If anyone in VIC bought a 3-pack of power boards and doesn't want them all, and wants to share the love, I'll take one! :)

    • you will probably find a lot listings in ebay a week or two later.

      • yeah, I'm not interested in buying one from someone looking to make a profit - hence looking for someone who wants to "share the love". there are some of us on here that do - not everyone here is Broden! :)

I have shared deals with people as well as had people share deals with me (multiple times), so it does happen!

but yeah, you're probably very correct that a lot of these end up on ebay/gumtree!

  • I was able to buy a 3 pack of shields just now in VIC, thanks!

    • -1

The shields are not out of stock. They are actually very useful, and contain the same total surge-protecting power as the powerboards do, but are smaller. You can hook up a normal powerboard to them.

  • +2

bought this so can i use this for my 78" tv or refrigerator ? not really sure what these are for, just bought it because it was on deal and i'm a ozbargainholic :p

    • They are intended to cut power within 1 nanosecond if there is a power surge or a shortcircuit from a connected device that causes overload, which in turn protects your equipment (in the former) or prevents excessive damage or fire (in the latter case).

      • Thx mate, will use it for tv 😊

  • Haha, the 6 socket power board has space for 8 sockets but 2 of them are dummies. They decided to exclude them and replace them with a blank space just to spite you for not springing for the 8 socket board.

  • IS the surge shield just something that a surge protector strip already has built in?

  • Good find, OP

    Sadly I missed out

  • You mean; Kogan Smith

  • +4

Just received an eVoucher code from Dick Smith via email. I ordered the power board on ebay. Haven't received a refund yet or an out of stock notification, but I'm guessing they're out of stock.

    • Same! Except I ordered directly from site.

      • same - eVoucher ?

        • Just got the "Due to overwhelming demand, we are unable to supply your Dick Smith Surge Catcher as originally expected" email

    • +1

      • Yep got this too. Hopeless

      • bloody ridiculous m8

  • +1

Same email here What am I going to do with $10 at Dicks?
We need a new thread for that! $10 from the Dick

    • Sorry to hear that. I guess that's always a risk. But getting your money back and a $10 voucher is not bad. Many other retailers would just cite their T&C's and not give anything as compensation. You could get yourself a free reversible micro-USB cable.

  • I got a refund via pay pal for 3-Pack Surge Catcher Power Boards. They must have had low stock as I got in quite early before they were taken down the first time around. Either this or it is luck of the draw as to who gets the products and not in any order. I did not even get and email from them to say there was a problem with the order just a refund. Typical treatment from retailers these days. They are all too happy to take your money up front then decide if they have enough stock to fill orders later. For the price it was worth a try though.

  • Had mine reversed too. Can anyone recommend a good quality powerboard with individual switches, only needs 4 or so points in it

  • My order cancelled as well.

Wish I could still neg this "deal" for taking orders when out of stock (had originally voted it up).
No problems taking my money for a week or so.
