  • Can i be part time student to get the monthly fee waived?

    • Hi LoveBargain15,

I work for St.George part time students will still get their fee waived.

You will just need to verify your student status at a branch.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

  • Sorry :/

You have to be a full time student or under 18

    • Can you please tell me if I'm required to keep the account open for a certain amount of time, or If I can close it soon after receiving the bonus cash?

    • In a student account, if i deposit $250 and then transfer it out or spend it using the debit card so that the account balance is less than $250, am i still eligible for the $50?

  • +2

Deposit $500 within 45 days and receive $50 within 52 days.
Does that mean if I deposit $500 instantly, I get $50 in 7 days?

    • Hi Nodanime,

Not quite, the payment will be made between 45-52 days of account opening.

  • +4

    IMB Bank Mark11? :-)

  • +2

    DONE!

  • last time it was offered by bank of sa and it didn't state "Excludes customers who have held a Complete Freedom Account with St.George, BankSA or Bank of Melbourne anytime from 30th June 2016" I used to have a st. George freedom account and still haven't received the $50 bonus.

    • Me too I had freedom account but way before 30 June 2016 (and also got $50 promo). Not sure if I can repeat

  • +10

One day the AFP is going to knock on my door

  • "$50 deposited into your account within 52 days of account opening" - is this simply allowing 7 days after the maximum requirement of depositing $500 within 45 days?

If you deposit $500 immediately after opening the account, are you likely to get the bonus in around 7 days or will you still have to wait 52 days?

    • +1

I'm hoping that you're interpretation is correct, but going to deposit $2000 initially just to be safe in case it takes more than a month for the $50 bonus to arrive.
I'll take $1500 back out as soon as the initial deposit clears. $1500 not earning 3.9% in my offset for a few days won't be much.

      • Just take the whole 2000 out. You don't have to keep 500 there all the time.

      • 3.9%? Any further information on this????

        Beats NABs crappy 2.55%…..

        • apparently it is home loan offset account.

        • @slackme: oh I didn't read that lol, oops…

    • Hi OzyBe,

You will have to wait 52 days, irrelevant of when you make the required deposit.

  • keep getting a server error when i click on Send SMS Activation Code.

    • +3

I hope this isn't like the ANZ fiasco where many of us got stuffed around and had to spend an hour in branch listening to their sales pitch because the online identification system wasn't working.

    • Filled in all the details and copped the same thing when asking for code. Already heading down the ANZ path here, which is very disappointing rep..

    • +2

You'd think a bank would have basic functioning IT systems. What is this, Iran?

      • +3

ANZ are still on Windows XP lol.

One would be amazed at the amount of legacy IT Systems still in use in the financial (and many other) industries.

        • +1

You would actually be amazed. Being involved in the sector it's ridiculous how technology systems hang together to do what they need or want to

        • I just tried opening the St George account. Looks like they're still using a Vic20 or a C64.

    • Same thing happened to me.

  • +2

OP, maybe worth adding that only $250 deposit is required to get the bonus, when opening a student account.

Says so on the student complete freedom account page:
    https://www.stgeorge.com.au/personal/bank-accounts/transacti…

  • -8

isn't ING deal better?..monthly account fee? are you serious?

    • Which deal are you referring to?

    • +10

The idea is to get the $50 and close the account, not to replace your existing account.

      • +1

don't want to support a bank that has fees… no worth the effort. They won't let you close the account easy…

  • How do i cancel the account after i'm done with it?

    • -4

Maybe ring them up or go to a branch? I thought this was common sense…

      • +6

i'm just a 14 y/o. Common sense for adults, maybe, but not for someone who has never cancelled a bank account before. Anyways ty.

I'm assuming the 10% gaming cashback offer doesn't include stuff i buy online but are not digital copies.

        • +1

Gaming offer terms are listed at the bottom of the page

^Offer available on the Complete Freedom and Complete Freedom Student account. Based on eligibility criteria, offer is only available to individuals over the age of 18 years. Available from the 1 October 2016 until 30 September 2017, however St.George reserves the right to withdraw the offer at anytime. Use your Complete Freedom or Complete Freedom Student Visa Debit Card must be used to make purchases on PlayStation Store©, Xbox One©, Steam©, Battle Net©, EA Origin©, Nintendo eShop© and Riot Games©. For customers with multiple eligible accounts, or a joint account, the cashback will be capped to one customer.

        • @zmu: Oh thanks, i didn't see that. Was going to say that normally i prefer and can find better physical deals than 10% off eshop price for nintendo. Might keep $100 in the account until the end of september though if i find any eshop sales prices that i am interested in. That said, how do i redeem the cashback and transfer money between banks?
EDIT: Also, i'm assuming that i won't receive cashback for games i purchase using nintendo credit from eshop cards i buy from whereever.
          Thanks for the helpful info.

        • @Ozbargain Lurker: nvm skimmed the over 18 yrs part. For some reason I can't edit/ delete comment on phone. Will delete once I get home.

        • @Ozbargain Lurker: No worries. If you're committed to the idea you could ask your parents to set up the account, or at least ask for their grace in setting up the account under their name. It will be a debit account so no possibility of overdraw or really anything going wrong, that couldn't already happen if you have a debit account.

          Best of luck.

  • Would it be okay if I had an account a year ago, but cancelled it? Will I still be legible? Cheers

    • +3

Excludes customers who have held a Complete Freedom Account with St.George, BankSA or Bank of Melbourne anytime from 30th June 2016.

So if you closed it before 30/06/2016 it should be good.

I've tried multiple times today and got the following message:

Sorry, we seem to be experiencing problems
    Please try later again

  • Filled out all of my details for a student account. but there is no 'CONTINUE' button.. sigh

  • +1

If you are in ACT, St George have a similar offer except it's a $100 eftpos card for kids accounts.
Opened up 2 accounts for my kids…easiest $200 of my life

    • I wonder why only ACT.

    • +1

Do they need proof you have kids?

      • -1

account for kids not account for parents with kids.

        • yes, need ID for kids - birth certificate and medicare

  • +2

    Multiple issues.
Webpage does not load properly on Safari. I try with Chrome and after it attempting to send me SMS verification it says "Sorry, we seem to be experiencing problems. Please try later again."

I repeat "Pease try later again"

So they are struggling with webpage and grammar.

  • fixed over the phone.

  • +1

Did this last year and it's simply not worth it for 50 dollars. Having to open account, activate, transfer in and out 2000 two or three times, then deal with their horrible customer service a few times (for getting the 50 and closing the account) and being put on hold for all and all a couple of hours is not worth the hassle and the time IMO unless you are under 18, unemployed or simply got PLENTY time on your hands…

    • I called them (Bank of Melbourne which is the same bank) a couple months back and was on hold for less than 2 minutes - I actually couldn't believe how good it was! But that was the only time I've called so maybe it was a fluke.

  • +1

This from their T&C could be the deal breaker for me, the below fee is $4 each time:

" # The Periodical payment fee is payable for a transfer of funds that we make on a regular basis at your request from your Account to another specific account. The fee is charged at the time the transaction occurs."

For accounts like this when you need to put in $2k per month to avoid their $5 monthly account fee, i usually schedule a direct transfer in from external bank, then a day later a scheduled transfer out for the same amount back to original bank. Granted, I can do these manually and use a reminder in calendar etc - but if not, and I'm doing it for more than a month, then i don't want to bank with someone who charges me $4 just for being organised by scheduling a transaction..

    • Or maybe if done via internet banking (which is all free in their fees list) it's not caught by the above as "we make…at your request". Who knows with this bank, especially given all the above issues people are having opening an account, and also others who opened their Altitude credit cards in the past month or so - questions on fees, delays approving and sending cards

  • +1

signed up but never got the sms.

  • keep getting an error
"Sorry, we seem to be experiencing problems
    Please try later again"

  • +1

Last time (June 2016)they were very late at depositing the money. At least closing the account is easy with a quick phone call.

  • +1

    free money - always good

    • Less so when they make you work for it by having a web site that crashes multiple times while trying to open the account and then tells you to call in at a branch.

Thanks PJC, I missed that exchange.
Wow, very immature. Surely this rep is due for a ban by now.
Rips people off, consciously ignores problems and I have met four year olds with better attitudes.

        • You are absolutely correct.

  • +1

Opened an account at 9am. Had no issues.

    • +1

Thanks, finally got my account application to go through at 2pm after having had it fail last night and around 7:30 this morning.

  • Opened two accounts (one for the missus). Now to recycle $500 eight times to save the fees!

    • if $100 maybe i will do it but 50, hmm not sure

    • Anyone got the $50 from the last offer a few months back?

    • +2

Is this a dupe of the StGeorge offer? If so, can we get both? As of right now, I've applied for StG and had the application acknowledged, but the account hasn't been created yet, so i have not held an account since 30/6/2016.

      • I tried cancelling my st George account about an hr ago on the phone but they Said the account hasn't been created yet and to cancel it afterwards.

I only found out about this offer last night and there's a 2 minute branch away from me along with the $0 monthly fee.

      • Not sure why someone gave me the neg? Is it poor form to ask if anyone has experience from similar past offers whether they can be 'stacked'?

        • -1

          Its just trolls..

      • +1

"Excludes customers who have held a Complete Freedom Account with St.George, BankSA or Bank of Melbourne anytime from 30th June 2016. Not available with any other new account offer."

    • +1

Do you have to live in Melbourne to get this offer?

      • +1

In VIC, St George bank got renamed to Bank of Melbourne, while in other states St. George kept their old branding
Ditto for SA, it's called Bank SA

You can take up the same offer at other states at bank of St George or BankSA, but you cannot take up 3 offers at once.

  • Was legitimately looking for a new account to compartmentalise my spending. Entered my personal info twice and after I selected the button to send SMS verification it just redirected to the initial landing page. Does not instil confidence! Especially after just having entered all my personal info!

    • I have exactly the same problem.

  • "We weren't able to verify your identity, you'll have to go to a branch to have your identity verified"

Screw that. What a waste of time and I now have an account that I don't want ffs

    • Just called up and cancelled my account. What a shitty online system.

  • +1

For Bank SA, it's the same deal, however, you also get a Royal Adelaide Show ticket thrown in for free to.

  • +2

Hi everyone – I actually work at St.George (in a different team, I’m not a rep) and have checked up on this.
Unfortunately, there was a SMS service outage between 01/07 4:00 AM to 02/07 2:43 AM.

Best thing to do if you have offer questions or spot any technical difficulties, is to contact our support teams directly –
call 13 33 30 or visit www.facebook.com/stgeorgebankaus - the folks there will be able to help you.
And yes I’ve passed on the note about the error message grammar :-)

Thanks for your patience everyone, if you couldn’t sign up before please do give it another try.

  • not sure if this has been said already but i was just told that i had to visit a branch to verify 100 points ID before withdrawing any money

  • online id check is useless. even if you completed online id check, you still have to go to branch to do id verification.

    • Same here.

  • +1

I just received a letter from St George asking if I want to close my account. I opened a freedom account about a year ago for a $50 bonus. I completely forgot about it, logged in and saw they did indeed pay the $50 but it was all eaten up by $5 a month fees and was now $10 in debt. None of it was my initial deposit since fortunately I remembered to withdraw that. I called to see if they could waive all the fees but best they could do was waive the debt and close the account. Oh well, easy come, easy go :P

  • Does anyone successfully receive the $50 and close the account? How easy to close the account?

    • +2

      Too soon.

      • Some should have got the 52 day mark by now. Any problems receiving the $50? I'm hoping that mine turns up soon.

  • just wondering … has anyone received their $50?

    • Nope, but my 52 days is on 24/8…

      • same with mine, ill wait another 2 days

        • Mine is the 24th too. Will check then and update you guys.

    • +4

      I received mine today.

      • +1

        Got mine today too

        • Received mine today

      • Mine was deposited today also even though my account has only been officially opened for 20 days after being requested to go into a branch, but never did until 3wks ago.

  • Once I withdraw, can I call up to close the account?

    • How do I close an account?
To close a St.George account that you no longer need, please visit your local branch. If you don’t live near a St.George branch, you can call us on 13 33 30.
