i am using it right now, it tested to be very fast for 1 day, then afterwards, they somehow restricted your speed. my speed is a lot less than my adsl2+ with tesltra and constantly drop connection.

      • +1

        Are you in the gong?

FTTN? or HFC? or Wireless NBN?

        Isolation tests done?

        • FTTN which they tested to be 96m/38m. after one day. it is 4m/1m and not going back to what it supposed to be.

      • +7

Been there with MR and 100% agree with both of these comments - absolutely awful company and a shitty service after a short period of time.

        • Did you end up cancelling? I've had a horrendous time with them but that >$100 cancellation fee kills me

        • I collected a weeks' worth of evidence (speed tests 2 x per day) and requested the $100 fee be waived which they agreed.

  • 1Gbps - sweet!

No doubt property prices in the area are on a nice trajectory.

    • Welcome to the gong!

      • Gong Cha?

        • With a coupon? or Entertinament book voucher?

        • @Turd:

          Your shout?

    • Its already Australias third most expensive city apparently.
That is only because it is the closest city to Sydney, but still.

    • any house in Australia that has Fiber to the property Labor god send internet is going to cost more then other houses with Fiber to the node liberal trash internet

  • any deals on 100/400 op?

    • No, with NBN CVC pricing cap RSP's (retailers) wont be going down, no no no prices are not down down down.

      • +1

thanks for the reply - i spoke to buzz telco yesterday and they mentioned they're working on a promo very shortly for their 100/40 deal again - was looking to sign up somewhere on a no contract.

if you can hook me up i'd be happy to DM about it.

        • They're all no contract on nbn aren't they? Wasn't that part of the requirements?

        • +1

Buzz so far are working out for me, a month in, no real complaints. Its hard to tell if the reason its like ADSL2 at times is down to ISP, or the sites visited. But I did DL an 8 gig file and utorrnet was hitting 9.2 at times and never dropped below 8.? so it seems at least at times the ISP is going like the clappers. I often see it seeding back at 2 or 3Mbs so it seems its not ISP related to me. 100/40 from June deal, $49 a month for first 6 months, no contract.

Approaching days when "download more ram" might actually not be a joke anymore and could be used for an online swap file :/

    • +1

You’re gonna need a lot quicker than this…

      • +1

        a zyrtec?

        • I gave you a plus, because you are trying really hard today with your jokes.

  • -6

Good luck maintaining that speed on NBN. Probably only suited for those who have fibre running all the way to there premises.

For those in a FTTN area like me we'd be lucky to see 100mbps and those furthest away 25mbps or less at most. Can't imagine how slow wireless NBN would be.

    • +8

Also known as 'FTTP', per the title.

Dapto, Kiama, Wollongong looking like lucky (profanity)

      • Also need to consider backhaul and links.

Practically everything is hosted in the US and if an ISP can only manage 15Mbps (my experience on 100/40) then it's kinda pointless.

Speedtest to your local PoP doesn't tell you anything except your line rate. And if happens to be a poor result your ISP will just blame the provider of that line (Telstra, NBN, etc). Zero accountability on the ISP itself.

    • +1

This 1Gbps is strictly FTTP only.
Any ISP can do it, they are just reselling NBN. But MyRepublic are the first to make it a standard plan and invest in the backhaul (at one area) to make it possible.

  • What's the best current NBN deal for Sydney users? Thank you :)

      • @Turd: I heard horror stories joining them.. Long connection etc. Have they improved or still the same? Does it only apply with new connection i.e. Only if the line is not there yet?

        • +3

          YMMV.

Like TPG, people say TPG is crap. Ive had no problems with TPG ADSL2+ for many years.

Depends on the contractor in your area and how NBN deals with them etc etc…

        • I signed up on 3rd July. Still waiting for connection. Finally have appointment date of 11/8. Existing ADSL line.

        • @Turd:

I am already with NBN FTTB connection (apartment block).
Does anyone know if that means MyRepublic can simply request service transfer to my existing RSP, hence no or minimal downtime?
The last thing I want is not having internet..

        • @OzFrugie: Yes, that's the idea in theory. NBN Co does all the back end, and Retailers do the supply etc..But you know exact same thing with ADSL with contractors etc etc… NBN "Churn" may or may not have downtime.

        • I'm with MyRepublic and getting 92/37. The installation was pretty quick, though had to wait 3 days for the connection to be active. That was the worst part.

So far I've had a few issues where an upstream connection couldn't be established, but that was resolved within 20 minutes (but seems like an NBN issue).

Overall, the service is pretty good for the price, and the fact it's on NBN's sub-par network.

        • @ShiKu:

What do you mean by "NBN sub-par network"? Are you referring to NBN as a whole is sub-par or that NBN network has tiers where RSPs can choose to buy from ?

You mentioned that you had to wait 3 days to connect. Was that brand new NBN connection or simply switching RSP (you had NBN connection before MyRepublic)?

        • +1

          @OzFrugie:

The connection was brand new, and I expected some wait. So that wasn't too much of an issue for me.

With the "sub-par network" I was referring to the deviation from the original plan for FTTH, and in comparison to other country's networks.

  • -1

I'm waiting for FTMMD. Fibre to my mobile device

    • I'm waiting for FTP. Fibre the Police

      • Me for FTP too….F!!! Turnbull's Policies………though to be fair T could be subbed by most if not all Pollies.

        • Turnbull has a track record of pulling scams in the internet industry it's no surprise he wanted to wreck this

      • They need to be more regular?

  • +2

Could barely get above 10mbps on FTTP through myrepublic, so I wouldn't hold my breathe for getting speeds like this. I've switched to Aussie broadband now, and get a consistent 90+Mbps downstream.

Seems like a mess of a company that's solely focussed on marketing stunts.

    • My dl and ul on my republic is around 93/35, slightly worse thab I was getting with optus. Ping went from 7 to 12. So I'm pretty happy. As always will check what deals are available at the 12 month mark.

  • Dammmmm chen

  • +5

Interestingly, you might need an SSD just to write fast enough. That's 125MB/s max.

I'd be willing to settle for a 500/200 plan for the $95 though.

    • Dont thnk the NBN offers that.

      • 250/100 is available on some ISPs for FTTP

    • 500/200 is a sweet spot for reasonably priced SSDs in the market for consumers.

    • +1

It's 2017, who are these people without a primary SSD?

  • Damn, shame I'm just FTTN.

  • +5

a lot of nonsense in this thread from people that have no idea what they are talking about

also the real price is $300+ so this is definitely a bargain for 12 months

  • Nah, this is false advertising… Launceston in Tasmania has access to gigabit NBN for months now… Wollongong is definitely not the first there…

    https://www.arnnet.com.au/article/619924/launceston-becomes-…

    • hmm

Blue Ocean™ Gigabit on the nbn™ went live on the 30th May 2017!

    • +1

$1000 a month for "a few select businesses" is not "gigatown"

prior to that you could pay thousands for a TPG fibre connection in major CBD's, this doesn't make the CBD's "gigatowns" either

      • +1

The key claim here is the availability of gigabit NBN across the city. myRepublic didn't say that Wollongong is the first affordable gigatown, it just said that it is the first.

        • do u have something against myrepublic? bad experience?

        • @rasserie: I don't, just bothered by the fact that they are not making the right claim here.

        • you do realise the cost is drastically different

        • +2

          @rasserie:
You do realise that differences in cost doesn't actually change the fact that the claim is about being the "first" right?

PS: Launceston also has 100% FTTP coverage, so it's not just to a few blocks or a few companies like other fibre solutions.

        • @systema: ISP's have been able to offer gigabit over FTTP since the NBN launched, whats your point?

ISP's in Australia have offered gigabit connections for years, this being the first residential based plan, making "gigatown" factually correct

        • @systema: whatever rocks your boat. $10000000 / month isnt exactly 'available' to mere mortals.

        • +2

@wingwang: ISPs haven't offered gigabit NBN as an option until May this year in Launceston. That's the point.

"Have been able to" does not equal to "have".

Also, parts of Wollongong are on FTTN, so they will never get anything even close to 100mbps. Just an FYI.

  • +2

"MyRepublic" sounds we will never get there.

the only problem you will face is you will be replacing all the drives in your NAS' - get the same in peak times also

    • Kinda just as bad as 3am, it's the middle of the day, most people are at work. Even if it drops to 600mb/s at peak I'd still take it, sick of destroying my 100mb/s lol.

      • I get this speed 24/7

    • Great if you're a photographer/videographer/YouTuber, very quick uploads!

Could upload multiple live 4K 360° video streams with ease.

  • +1

I hope myrepublic bring in dialup, I found the connecting sounds soothing as I connected to the World Wide Web.

  • +1

I had signed for 100 Mbps. Had 2-3 Mbps. Worst Customer Serveice as well. Have trust.
Raised two complains with TIO Ombudsman within 30-40 days. Never ever falling for that trap, again. BuzzTelco seems better.

To someone to try yet the service, PLS don't go for Contract with them. Try for a month if you are so desperate. Good luck.

    • +2

Ditto. I once got an engaged tone when calling their customer service. When I rang back, I got some random dude (didn't even get the usual phone menu) who said he wasn't able to offer any support atm, and asked for my details for a callback (which obviously never came).

The bizarre thing was that Speedtest.net consistently gave pretty good results, despite every other websites loading at dial up speeds, and other speed test sites returning results as low as 1mbps. So I suspect they prioritised speedtest.net traffic, so that customers will post their 'great' results on Whirlpool etc., which will encourage others to sign up.

After settling my TIO dispute after about 40 days, they said they wanted their modem back, and I would get a satchel to return it in within a few weeks (fine by me, it was still in the box). It's about 6 months later, and I'm still waiting on that satchel.

      • +2

Yeah, I was on contract and got out of it after TIO complaint. I too received email about Sachel to return Modem. Ok, good until here.

I then asked them to prove that the Modem belonged to them; more than happy to ship. I had paid for this even though that's tiny amount ($1). Never ever heard from those guys.

MR had brought nothing but frustration. Good to move out of that crap.

  • I take it this is not on the NBN … but on their own network? Unsure how else they could do it so cheap.

    • if you bothered reading you will see it's costing MR half a million dollars subsidising this and it's to force the government to lower CVC country wide

      • +1

Bothered reading where? Nothing in the OP post, and nothing in the link.
Gees some people get narky easily on here. Hope this isn't turning into Whingepool.

        • @JAKEBAB: I just hope they don't fail, then pack up and leave. I'm happy with their pricing.

        • @JAKEBAB:
          Thank you.

        • @lostn: Well with the recent articles, i'd say they will. It looks like NBNco have absolutely no intention of reducing/removing CVC or putting NBNco on the budget :/ Thanks Libs and your voters!

        • +1

@JAKEBAB: That's bad. Say what you will about MR's service, their pricing is adding some much needed competition. If they pull out, others will raise up prices to what they were.

          NBNCo are a big fail.

        • @JAKEBAB:

          In that article:

"We know the model is changing. It’s going to change,” Demos said. “The pricing model in Australia is just wrong. It doesn’t work.”

          And then…

Demos also criticised ongoing “finger pointing” between NBN Co and retail service providers…

So Demos isn't finger pointing, he's just says the pricing model is wrong but isn't blaming anyone?

      • and it's to force the government to lower CVC country wide

As if that's going to happen.

If you have one town in Australia with these speeds, it's not going to make everyone else catch up. They'll just write off that town as belonging to MR and carry on.

        • Agreed. How is the govt. encouraged to lower CVC when someone else is going to subsidise it.

        • +1

          Just like in America.

Oh, Google fibre has rolled out in Kansas? Looks like there's demand for gigabit internet in Kansas, we'll all roll out gigabit too. Not for the rest of the country though, can't see any demand there.

    • Yeah I can see them jacking up the price after 12 month terms.

  • +3

+1 for the use of the word "Wollongongeeons"

  • Targeted

    • LOL, negated the neg vote in appreciation.

      • Haha, thanks man. It's fine though, just trying to make ozbargain in-jokes. Lol

  • +9

Firstly, I'm negging because this is not a deal but more of an advertisement.

Secondly I'm negging because of my personal bad experience with MyRepublic.

    If you wanna read on:
I'm one of the early adopters. They prematurely disconnected my previous ISP, leaving me without an internet connection for 6 weeks.

When I finally got it, my speeds are NEVER above 10mbps during peak hours. I'm currently getting 2mbps on a 100/40 line.

Emailed their support with only a generic reply asking me to call their phone support.

Called their phone support and no one picks up.

Please do more research with MR before signing up with them. I can't recommend this ISP as their hype is just that, hype.

Location: Perth, WA. On FTTB, can't blame the technology as my previous ISP (Exetel) was connecting me on at least 60-65 mbps during peak times.

My neg got un-negged. Not sure why. Because that's what I thought. Oh well.

  • +8

Garbage isp. Was with them for 3 months. First month was ok, next 2 months were terrible.

They said slow speeds were an issue with the backend provider they need to upgrade something but they don't have an ETA. Even told me that if I moved to another isp the same issue would happen. (Lies)

Put in a complaint with the TIO. TIO have them 25 days to get in contact with me. They literally waited until the 25th day to call me and say your not happy so we can release you from your contract.

Signed up to new ISP same day, speeds were great!

    • Exact same. Waited until nearly the last day to contact me… I won't go into detail about my complaint as it's similar to others on here. Their idea of a solution was a $10 credit. Hahahahahaha.. pls.
