Maybe add this to the title to sweeten the deal? :)

    This one:

Way better spec and over $100 cheaper.

    • +1

Not really comparable as this is a China phone from a questionable overseas retailer. Way better spec though if your game.

you do know that moto is owned and made by Lenovo, right?

        • +6

          Please stop with the toxicity.

    • +5

arguably. this moto has nfc, b28, octa-core, local stock+warranty, zuk does not have any of this.

    • +4

Nice phone but no band 28 and no local warranty.

    • Don't know why you got begged , but both are made by same people.(Lenovo owns Motorola)

  • Do Chinese phones have pre-installed spyware, or is it only Lenovo laptops?

If you don't mind the white colour this is a decent alternative at 380 + delivery

  • I just bought one from dx.com ?

    • +8

      Thanks for letting us know.

I do not know the answer to this question

      • I was hoping you would be able to answer this curly question :S

      • lol, sorry guys.

  • +1

    How was your first time?

    • +5

Felt good to finally play with others :D

  • This or the Axxon 7? Really stuck, my Nexus 5x has been playing up for some time.. Needs more RAM really.

    • +3

Axon 7 is a high end device, the Z play is mid range.
      Basically half the cpu performance.

      • +1

Yep, did some quick research and bit the bullet for the $499 Axon 7 at JB HI Fi.

$508 shipped or something, looks to be amazing.

Will be selling my 5x soon! Want to keep it but not worth keeping.. Haha

Thanks for the input, do appreciate it!

        • +2

Good choice. I did a bunch of research and narrowed it down to the Z Play, Z2 Play and Axon 7 and ended up going for the Axon 7. Better screen, daydream compatible, dual speakers, they cover you for accidental screen breakage for 2 years. I also found the warranty better as well. Any issues with your ZTE device, you send it to ZTE office in Melbourne. For Motorola phones, looks as though you send it to an authorised 3rd party warranty centre, the only outlet of which is in Sydney.

        • I got the HTC 10 for $499, probably pretty close between that and the Axon 7?

    • Motos run Pure droid. Closest thing to a nexus that isn't a nexus (or a pixel).

      • That's what made me lean towards the Motorola..

Ended up putting Lineage OS + rooting my Axon 7. My 5 and 5x had root access (later on in their life cycles) and it was great.

Overall really happy, the speakers aren't quite as good as the stock ROM for some reason, but the headphones are.

I also had some weird issue with YouTube, but just reinstalled gapps and it fixed it.

Would suggest if you are looking at custom ROM's/rooting

You can get the full powered non play for basically the same price from HK if you are ok with that.
    http://www.geekbuying.com/item/Lenovo-Motorola-Moto-Z-5-5-In…

    Or this model for $315
    https://www.gearbest.com/cell-phones/pp_446767.html

  • I'd probably go for the Moto G5+ instead, currently $350 at JB HiFi I think? Basically the same specs, just can't do Moto Mods.

    • -4

I have the G5+. It lacks a GPS. A few times I have wanted to use a GPS as some apps require it (e.g., astronomy apps). I am still happy with the G5+ but if I had my time over I would probably have bought the Z Play.

      • no digital compass for the G5+, but a lot cheaper if compass not needed and happy with 16GB memory for local $349 stock.

      • No GPS? That's ludicrous

      • +1

Of course it has a gps, they even say so on their web site.
        https://www.motorola.com.au/products/moto-g-plus

        Source: happy g5 plus owner.

      • you would need to give permission of location to your "some apps"….

      • Oops mistake, said GPS when I should have said compass. What I said refers to compass.

    • The bigger AMOLED screen is better on the Z, assuming you can do the larger size.
I got a G5+ for my mum, fantastic value phone, just a little big for the screen size if I was to nitpick.

  • Rather wait a couple of days for Oneplus 5?

    • but not at the same price?

      • Not far off it tho it seems

        • o.O ummm ok.

$479 delivered vs $599 (plus postage)

        • @JimmyF:
closer to $523.95 posted ($416.00usd), only about 50 bucks more than this, grey import but still close enough price to make the comparison especially considering the moto z play is often being compared to the oneplus 3 from 2 gens ago
          https://www.joybuy.com/600116526.html

        • @phor8: To compare an apple an apple and as part of the THREAD you're replying to saying OP5 is coming to OZ, we are comparing Australian OP5 vs Australian Moto Z Play.

Anyhow for $75, its most likely worth buying aussie stock to get 2 years warranty.

  • +2

The main highlights for this phone are:

Dual SIM + dedicated memory card slot
    Stock Android
    Awesome 2-3 day battery life.

Yes there are better phones for the price but when you bring the above factors into consideration it's a tough call to beat the z play

  • This or the oneplus 5?

    • -1

Hmm, current high end phone or last year's mid range?
If you can't answer this you have problems.

  • My housemate has this phone. Very snappy, almost stock Android experience and incredible battery life. The only downside is the camera - it's average compared to the flagships.

If you value battery life, it's the phone to get.

If you want a better camera at a similar price (local warranty) then the OP5 (once they start selling direct here) might be the way to go. Or a LG G6 if you're prepared to do a grey import.

  • Posting from one of these. It's already received the 7.1.1 upgrade. Apparently Moto will be taking it to 8 (Oreo). Great phone if you like near-stock Android.

And seriously, the battery life is outstanding. Battery Saver has kicked in maybe 2 or 3 times in the ~9 months I've owned it.

  • Z Play is a great phone, performance is super snappy and battery life is amazing (I sold my Nexus 6P and bought one from officeworks for $450) highly recommend

  • this or Mi Note 2?

    • Mi Note 2 has much better specs, however standard version has no band 28. The is a global version with band 28 but it costs a hefty premium.

  • I have this phone

    It's good

Best thing is I basically never worry about charging it. Can go two days without charge with heavyish use

Previously had redmi 4s, Nokia 920,Sony z compact…. This is a better phone than them.

I'd get local au version but that's cos I'm tired of flashing ROMs etc

I'd get case cos bigger phone .. easier to drop

  • +1

is this phone really worth $479? that's quite a big markup for a non-standard flagship phone isnt' it?

    • Depends on your needs, for me yes. Better than the flagships

    • You can get it much closer to $400 for grey import.

  • Forever Lollipop no Nougat.

  • is it just me or the moto store went down?

EDIT: working again and ordered! :D

  • So if I buy this from moto for 479, apart from local stock and warranty (how long is warranty?)
Will every thing be the same from the grey imports for 380 Kogan or 315 from gearbest?

Will software be the same? These seem pretty reliable so may never need warranty

    • The only thing that I noticed is Kogan don't seem to list band 28 in the 4G specs. Minor issue if that's the case, but it could be a consideration if you travel to rural/regional areas.
