  • Silly question, how do I convert win10 from Chinese to English?
Also, would the laptop come with any bloatware especially spyware..?

    • +1

Good question. I'd reinstall Windows out of the box. No harm and Windows 10 makes it very easy.

      • +2

Do you mean buying Windows again?

        • +5

Digital COA means you dont need buy again. Simply reinstall if you want. Skip step asking you for the key.

      https://www.reddit.com/r/Xiaomi/comments/6pgo2m/xiaomi_air_1…

This should work, no need to purchase a new Windows key

      • I wonder if you can DBAN and install win7.

      • Windows 10 home activates fine over the internet with digital license. Google to create USB bootable media

      • Tried that with the new version (MX150) and couldn't get it to work so far…

    • Thanks everyone. Tempting now.

    • google Windows language package.

  • +3

Just so people are aware, there's a new Xiaomi Air edition. It has a newer CPU, GPU and fingerprint scanner.

    • Any deals on it?

      • +1
        • Awesome! Got that one, thanks.

  • Hmmm I'd fork over the extra few dollars for the Lenovo. Risk/Reward doesn't add up vs buying from the manufacturer with local support, also newer spu in the Lenovo.

    • Just out of curiosity which model Lenovo would you be comparing this to? I'm interested in the price premium between them.

      • That would be the E470

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/328071

$36 more at the current deal.

        • +4

Friend, the gpu on the xiaomi model is significantly better however. I think the risk/ reward is rather fair.

        • Ahhh. Yep, not bad specs… Not quite ultrabook dimensions though.

        • @Siddeeqi al-Hammoud: Don't they both have a NVIDIA GeForce 940MX 2GB ?

        • It's somewhat comparable spec wise, but not quite as portable, plus it's the ugliest lappy you can buy.
I've never found the brand very reliable either.

    • +3

just keep in mind these laptops are not in the same class. The lenovo has better specs, but the chassis on this laptop is much nicer (materials & build quality) and is more portable.

      • +1

The Xiaomi is also almost 600g lighter (~1.3kg compared to E470 at ~1.9kg) which is the tempting part for me.

        • +1

yeah the Xiaomi targets macbook-air/ultrabook design (lightweight, premium feel, great batt life and portability). whilst the Lenovo is just a laptop with great specs

    • +1

I bought my Air 13.3 in March. Its been running great, I even play games (world of warships on medium settings) during lunch time at work on it.

The build quality on the Air 13.3 is pretty good, no heat issues either.

I doubt you will find a laptop for this price with these parts for $800 and still have it under 1.28kg.

The Risk / Reward adds up, because if something went wrong, send it back. Its not the end of the world. Lenovo has no offering that even comes close.

  • +8

This is the previous gen model. For $819USD (currently on sale) you can get the most recent release with an i5-7200U and a very impressive MX150 graphics card (equivalent to Nvidia 1030) - use coupon code intel04

    • From what I remember, the webcam is a huge improvement also. I've got the 6200u, and the webcam is pretty pretty damn bad.

    • +1

      Cheaper here

      • Do you get one finally?

  • I think lightinthebox's offer is still slightly better not only you'll get an express shipping plus a bit more cashreward dollar cashback.

  • -8

Not even Chinese people use Xiaomi, if they have to they go either Lenovo or Asus.

Would not touch Xiaomi stuff with a ten foot pole

    • +8

then your stupid. I have about 10 Xiaomi products and i think about 9 of them i have been blown away by the price/quality of it. this product is no exception.

      • +2

Same. Xiaomi phone - 2 years old, not had a problem. Xiaomi power banks x3 - 2 years old, all work great, never had any problems. 2x Xiaomi IP cameras - both work great (although english instructions were lacking).

Given Lenovo's recent history, I would probably chose Xiaomi over them - all other things being equal.

        • Hmmm I had two of their Redmi Note 4 mobile phones both of which had the battery expand to be unusable and both knocked back for warranty.

        • @dsantos15: Actually, the battery in my note2 is bloating, but it seemed to start after it got left in a hot car a few times. The genuine replacement battery was $13 - just waiting for it to arrive. My wife's last phone, and my brother in law's phone have both had the same issue - and they're more reputable brands.

        • @macrocephalic: Oh thats good, I thought the batteries were not replaceable on the note 4's. I'll have to look into that further. Thank you.

        • @dsantos15: Mine is a note 2, battery is easily replaceable, not sure about the later models.

      • then you're stupid.

    • +9

That is a really negative approach with no evidence. Please reference where this information comes from. I do acknowledge that you're entitled to your opinion however. But Xiaomi is one of the better companies within the technology space.

    • How do you know?

    • You keep using your main brands.

I have a Air 13.3, Mi Max 2, Mi Box. Nothing even comes close to its price for performance and quality.

My Mi Max 2 lasts 5 days on battery and cost $300. Its fast and reliable. Tell me one phone that is even close.

I wonder if the glossy screen would be like looking in a mirror. And I saw a review on youtube that showed that these things get really hot at load.

    • +1

I think there is a matte coating that reduces glare

Reports are that the new model (with MX150) gets extremely hot under medium-to-heavy load. One of the few downsides of an otherwise great piece of hardware

      • +1

Do you know if this matte coating is on the older model? And I wonder if there is a heat mod that could be applied.

      • According to the 2017 model product description "Its fully laminated display greatly reduces glare, and it is perfect for indoor and outdoor usage." but the video reviews show quite prominent glare as would be expected from a gloss screen. Sounds difficult to be certain about it. Pity because I like matte screens and hate glare.
