Xiaomi Smart Wireless Switch/Button AU $4.82/US $3.79 Delivered @ GearBest

1090
reno1reno2

Hello all smart home people. I understand we all love Xiaomi stuff so am hoping this deal fills some holes left in peoples techno houses/hearts.

After ordering 13 RGB yeelights and 4 lightstips I became ever so frustrated with my kids turning the lights off at the mains. It made my Homeassistant look nasty with everything unavailable. Enter the new love of my techno life…. a wireless button!

Before you start getting too excited, please be mind full that having a Xiaomi Gateway is a necessity, no way around it as it uses this funky fandangled technology called Zigbee which means it uses pretty much no power and is safer for the nads! If you don't have it, I would be asking myself why I didn't have it as it plays the best (and only) chinese radio I have ever heard! It can also function as a pretty sweet nightlight. Can connect with other cheap devices like the temperature/humidity sensor, door/wall sensors, motion sensors and the Zigbee smart power socket (that also reports power usage that can save more money). Just remember each Gateway max out at 30 devices.

Gateway has been posted here by kungfupanda

EDIT: there's also this switch/button (thanks @reno) for anybody who likes to mix it up/needs more than 3. I personally prefer the simple round style myself (and it is cheaper)

AU$7.62/US$5.99
use code: reno2

Once you have the sweet button in your hands you can then assign tasks that the button can do, either by the Mi Home app or your favourite smart home flavour such as Homeassistant, Domoticz etc We have 3 in our bedroom; 1 on each side of the bed and 1 at the door.

Currently I have mine set up for 1 click light on/off, 2 clicks lamp on/off, press and hold to turn everything off. With a bit of youtube/know how/smart kids you can pretty much assign the button to do most smart commands.

Limited to first 494 stock ,3 units per order, 1 order per account. It was 500, but after I told my wife about how much of a bargain it was she couldn't resist. Code only work for AU and NZ only (sorry Russia).

If you have any basic questions I am happy to help out. Remember the true ozbargain saying though, buy now ask later, also something something cashrewards.

TLDR; its a smart button that can be configured/assigned to turn things on/off etc. You need the Gateway to go with it though

  • Good price, I use this to Arm/Disarm my gateway.

    • I originally had it as my doorbell but nobody pressed it, they would just knock. Decided to repurpose it. I then realised its full potential of what it could become

      • Sow what are you using it for now?

        • The list in endless. If i wanted I could use it to turn the TV on, change the A/C temp, take a photo, turn my PC on, message my phone, change colour of my lights, play music… Mainly turn lights on and off though :P

        • +7

@pacsman: i have the power to change the world. but first let me turn on the lights

        • I've got one to toggle power to my xiaomi smart plug on/off (which I've got connected to my router&modem to restarts the internet). Double click turn all xiaomi lights off, and ine long press toggle power on/off to another smart switch which is currently in the garage for charging my drill.

  • Bought. What is it with Gearbest and sending an order confirmation before you actually pay?

    • +1

Don't forget to order some for your wife, she will be most unimpressed if you don't

  • +11

Just a note - to setup and use the yeelights you need either the Mi-home or yeelight app. This requires a xiaomi login (free) and commands are sent via the cloud. All good there, but for the paranoid of you out there you can, for example, go into the yeelight app and set the light to 'developer mode'. What this means is it can still be controlled via the cloud but you can also send it commands directly over the local network.

Once you have developer mode enabled, you can then use all sorts of different gateways - not just the xiaomi one - to control your lights. eg:
    domoticz - https://www.domoticz.com/wiki/Yeelight
    openhab - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHFdbe_tE2s (https://github.com/coasterli/openhab2-addons/blob/add_yeelig…)
    home assistant - https://home-assistant.io/components/light.yeelight/
    vera - http://getvera.com/ (http://forum.micasaverde.com/index.php/topic,50722.0.html)
    etc

By the way, if you do this it's also a good idea to set your yeelights to have a fixed IP address.

    • Is there a noticable lag, with the commands sent via the cloud?

      • No, it generally seems pretty quick…. but of course if the 'cloud' ever has an issue then it would all stop working. For most people it's fine though. I like the fact that this has the option.

  • +4

These also work well with Samsung SmartThings Hub - FYI. I already have 5 and purchased another 3 now.

  • +3

Yes, I ordered 3 for me and 3 for my ex-wife. Thanks, great price!

And perfect timing, I just set up everything I own in home assistant yesterday and realised I need a lot more buttons :-)

Looking forward to your code for the gateway. The one I got was US$23, let's hope they beat that.

Downside with it is not only the limit to 30 connected devices but also the limited range of Zigbee, can't connected reliably from the shed, so I'll need another gateway there, WiFi reaches thanks to a (Xiaomi of course) repeater. The smart sockets were supposed to work as Zigbee repeaters, but I think that was some misinformation that made it on the web…

    • Use a powered zigee device half way between the shed and the hub. Such as this: https://www.gearbest.com/living-appliances/pp_344666.html

Make sure it's the zigbee version though.

      • That's what I tried, exactly that one. Didn't work for me. Did you try it personally or only read about it in forums like I did?

        • I have it going now. I have about 10 powered zigbee devices. My battery zigbee never skip a beat.

Did you give it some time to remap the network. Sometimes it can take a while

      • I did not know this. So any Zigbee devices acts as a repeater? Or may be just ones that plug into power like the socket you suggested?

        • +1

Not quite. There's three basic types of Zigbee node

Coordinator - 1 per network, in charge of everything
Router - allows relaying of data to other devices so needs a permanent supply e.g. a light bulb could be one
End point - Low power devices that only do their own thing and can't route packets - usually battery powered e.g. a door sensor or switch.

        • @Shonky: Thanks for that. 'Every day is a school day'.

        • @Shonky: Sorry, one question. How do we know that the plugged in devices are acting as a router. Couldn't Xiaomi make the devices also an end point to try and make you buy another gateway?

        • @jackwoz: That's exactly what I figured had happened when the socket did not work as a repeater/router for me. Beware, no one yet has said they actually used one successfully…

        • @team teri: I got the xiaomi zigbee socket to work as repeater. So it does work. Won't work with non xiaomi devices from what I read a while back.

        • @rexii2300: Did you have to activate that feature somehow or did it work out of the box, just plugging it in?

        • @team teri:

All powered by mains zigbee devices will act as repeaters. Battery powered will not act as repeaters. The more powered zigbee the better your network. I have about 10 powered zigbee devices now.

        • @jackwoz:
Right there's nothing stopping a company creating a device that would perfectly capable of being a router (mainly power supply) but instead configure it to be an end point so it didn't provide routing functionality.

If on the same ZigBee network they all "should" work together however there's definitely ways devices can be incompatible intentionally and unintentionally.

        • @President Bartlett:
Not quite that simple. It's up to the device's configuration. The power supply doesn't enforce the type of device it is but what you said is generally how it works out (and how it should work out).

        • @team teri: my understanding is that only the zigbee socket can function as a repeater as xiaomi don't really have any other main powered zigbee devices. For it to work:
I paired the socket with the gateway
I paired the zigbee device to the gateway
move the socket to where you want it located, power it on again and check it shows in the xiamoi app
Move the zigbee device to where you want it located
Reactivate the device by pressing the device's button or poke it with the pin (depending on the device)
The gateway should announce something like 'yi lian jie' which means device is already connected. (you might want someone to stand by the gateway to listen for this)

        • @Shonky:

Yes, I realise that. Generally though…..

        • @rexii2300: the reactivation isnt required if the zigbee device is battery powered and therefore always connected right? like this switch

        • @furythree: The reactivation is only need if you want the device to talk the the repeater instead of the gateway.

  • +3

    there's also this one
    https://www.gearbest.com/access-control/pp_626695.html

    AU$7.62/US$5.99
    use code: reno2

    =)

    • +6

Your the guy from the code!

      • btw you should add the other switch into the same post heading details =)

    • +1

What's the difference between them ?

      • Yes, keen to know the difference too.

      • Im not sure there is anything different in functionality. The aqara are made by a different comapany, so one could say the quality may be better/worse

    • Hi reno! Thanks for the code. Could you do one for multiple "Human Body" Sensors https://www.gearbest.com/smart-light-bulb/pp_257678.html

I think people are keen to have automatic lighting in all their rooms with the Yeelight globes :)

  • Safer for the nads…HAHA!

  • +1

    sorry Russia

Since when do Russians use OzB?!?

теперь покажу мне сделку на водке

  • A great writeup, thanks.

I understand we all love Xiaomi stuff

I have doubts about all the permissions that their apps require in order to work. They basically require complete access to everything.
All your data could be sent back to China and hacked.

Are there any less intrusive apps that can control these switches?

  • +1

    Great timing.
Recently bought the 5 in 1 kit, movement sensors and the Yeelights last week and plan to have the lights in hallway, toilet, powder room all come on and off automatically for the kids.
Might look at doing their bedrooms too and have these switches at their bedside tables.

    Thanks!

    • how can you still afford cocaine for your powder room after spending all that money on xiaomi products ?

      • +1

        Was part of the kit

  • Anyone know if these can work with the lifx bulbs?

    • +1

If you use Homeassistant/OpenHAB/Domoticz and have the Gateway, yes you can

      • The Xiaomi gateway?

        • +1

          Yes. Order goes
button pressed -> Gateway (via Zigbee)
Homeassistant detects activity from Gateway (Wifi)
Homeassistant completes command for when the button is pressed eg changes the LiFX state to On/Off

        • +1

Be prepared for a frustrating journey with Home Assistant, but well worth it

        • @jackwoz:

I will give it a crack. Can always go smartthings if it doesnt work apparently.

        • @hypie: You will also need a Raspberry Pi for the home assistant to work on. It took me a good month or so of dicking around to have the system exactly how i want. I had never touched linux before so this was where the learning curve started

        • +1

@jackwoz: They now how an SD card image you can flash called hass.io for the not so confident with linux people

        • @pacsman: Yep, this is a great step to simplifying it. But i must admit getting the automation syntax correct was also a learning curve

  • +4

I just posted the deal for the gateway if anyone is interested… good luck!

    • thanks - should pick up another, given gateway can only do 30 devices
not hard to get past that when i have a bunch of sockets and temp sensors as is

      • I am about to blow out to a second Gateway

  • i've been wondering how I can use the yeelights with the gateway as well as google home.

Can I get this all working with home assistant via the gateway as well as google home?

    thanks!

    • Yes you can. Yeelights are now integrated to google home out of the box, just need to use the Singapore Server.

When integrated, Homeassistant will pick up the state of the light. Switch is integrated to toggle settings. It sounds hard but is relatively easy to set up.

      • I have to sync the yeelights with the mi home app though to use it with the gateway.

I think homeassistant is the solution?

        • +1

That is true. You need to use the Yeelight app initially and set the light to developer mode. They will then be picked up by Homeassistant automatically.
After that you do not need to configure anything via the Mi Home app and if you are worried you can block it at your router to stop them contacting the outside world.
You need to use the Mi Home app on the Chinese server initially to register the button to the Gateway as well and put it in developer mode. After this it can also be blocked

        • @pacsman: are most people just setting up a raspberry pi as their homeassistant server?

        • +1

@impoze: Yes they are probably the cheapest, easiest and use minimal energy. I personally have a VM server so i just built up a dedicated machine. From my understanding it can run most basic functions on a $15 pi0 W, when you start adding in many devices and videos it will struggle

  • So just to confirm I can use this along with the Mi Home or Yeelight app? I have my bedside lamp come on with my alarm and go off automatically in the the morning via the app but would be nice to have an override button to turn on/off at other times?

    • Only if you have the Xiaomi Gateway as the button is Zigbee not Wifi.

    • Only from Mihome App not Yeelight, you can't add other non-yeelight device in Yeelight app.

  • The xiaomi cube is a better "switch" than this. It can sense several actions and orientations and you can program each to perform different actions.

    • +3

Tue, but I am unable to use it on my wall as gravity always gets in my way

    • +1

its going to look a bit funny stuck to a wall

    • This has 3 programmable actions so it's not too shabby

  • It was 500, but after I told my wife about how much of a bargain it was she couldn't resist.

    I love it

  • +1

    bought it.

    what does it do?

    • +5

      its like a mini frisbee

  • Thanks for the codes. Been looking for something to control my Lifx lights with for ages!

  • The code for Gateway had expired right after I bought this :(

Can't use this without the gateway!

    • +1

I have messaged the rep, will pm you if/when she messages back

    • New code for gateway is live Minny1027

      • Bought thanks!

  • I’m waiting for a deal on the hardwired switch as my house mostly use downlights :(

    • do you have a link for this product?

        • yeah, just wanted to know for later on as I've also been wondering how to do this for downlights.

Would we have any issue with insurance using these switches?

        • @impoze:
Yes you would if something happened. They won't be compliant and are not marked or complied as such.

They are also not the usual rectangle shape used in Australia so retrofit will likely get messy.

I'm looking at going the way of wireless switches (that don't directly control the lights) but have ZigBee or otherwise smart lights. Keeping the original light switches intact (just always on). No electrician needed then too.

        • @Shonky: that's what i've got now with these wireless switch buttons.

        • @impoze: yes not aus certified… but if you're willing to give it a shot
i haven't found any brackets that fit these square 86mm switches (the inside is about 56mm)… so the easiest way is actually just to cut a 56mm square and then use double sided tape and it holds fine
just annoying as it's not screwed down

i'm sure you can find the proper brackets from asia somewhere, just that these are not common here

        • +1

@reno: Mate I am all for importing our own Xiaomi appliances with no worry, however self wiring a non compliant prescribed electrical product is way over the line, you would have no leg to stand on at all!

        • @FickleRick: definitely agree… self wiring is not recommended at all, and shouldn't be done. as with all electrical wiring, should have a qualified person doing it. I have no issues using them and I personally check all the details to know what I'm getting that person in to do (so you won't get ripped off - not any different with servicing and changing car parts, where you're putting other lives at risk on the road)

The question is will they install a non au compliant device? most of them will… just like a lot of the light fittings are not compliant, similar risk is there and you have to weigh it up. You pay for what you get

Similar risks are there using the gateway itself, the powerboard extensions etc… all are non au compliant - so if anything happens, you can only blame yourself.

I'm not against trying these products, but definitely trying them in isolation and bit by bit. Would not do the whole house without knowing what each of the devices are like

        • @Shonky:

They are also not the usual rectangle shape used in Australia so retrofit will likely get messy.

One could go for something like this instead. It has native Google Assistant and Alexa support. I think you need to flash different firmware for HA support though.

        • @eug:
Sure, somewhat sketchy without any compliance at all. Remember you're talking about fire risks here.

Main problem I find with the switch replacements is I have a few wall plates with 3/4/5/6 switches. What do you do with them when these guys supply 1 maybe 2 unit switches only? You end up with a random mish mash of switch types.

        • @Shonky:

Sure, somewhat sketchy without any compliance at all. Remember you're talking about fire risks here.

Yes, there's always a fire risk. But it doesn't necessarily mean it's any riskier than a locally-purchased device.

What do you do with them when these guys supply 1 maybe 2 unit switches only? You end up with a random mish mash of switch types.

Broadlink have a 3-gang switch. You could use two of them. You will need Broadlink's RM Pro hub though!

  • +1

    Good find OP!

  • Got 2. Thank you.

  • Awesome! Have had Home Assistant setup for a while but only recently discovered the Xiaomi Gateway which I purchased a few weeks ago with the temp sensor, motion sensor and one of these buttons. Just purchased another 2 buttons thanks to this.

Plan to use one as a doorbell that notifies my phone when someone presses it, flashes my lifx globes and plays some sound on the gateway.

Will use the other one as a master switch in the bedroom to turn off any lights and TV's left on in the house.

Anyone got any other ideas for the third one?
