    Archive drive?

    • Amazon reviews and photos appear to show archive drive.

    • +5

Yep. $40 more for the WD 8tb is worth it IMO

      • +2

I shucked 6 each of 8TB Seagate Expansion drives just recently (in the last 30 days) purchased from Amazon and got BarraCuda Pro Compute 7200rpm drives for all of them. Backup Plus is a different product though.

        • +1

Wow that is awesome, the 8TB Seagate Expansion drive on Amazon is currently selling for only $10 more than this one https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-Desktop-External-ST…

Is this the one you purchased recently? Im really tempted to buy after what you said, but Im still scared I might get an SMR drive!

        • @wonderboy4: I took the gamble and payed the extra $10, but I've had no issues with archive drives.

        • Link please, do you mean STDT8000100, STEL8000100 or something else? I'm looking to get 5 to expand my ZFS pool. Even if they come out as SMRs it's not the end of the world for the workload concerned. Thanks

        • @wonderboy4: Correct they aren't the ones I bought

        • @jg86tsv: "jg86tsv @wonderboy4: Correct they aren't the ones I bought"

Im confused, are the drives in the link below the ones you bought and got 6x Barracudas?

          https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-Desktop-External-ST…

        • +1

          @wonderboy4:

Correct as per the amazon link you posted above

I purchased 6 over the course of about 3-4 weeks.

My last one is sitting in my PO Box but i wont be home for a few weeks to check it as i am travelling currently.

All drives i received were same model/firmware revision.

        • @jg86tsv: thanks jg86tsv really apreciate your reply. So I guess it voids warranty opening them but still probably worth it for what youre getting.

        • I also scored an 8TB Barracuda. Thanks for the heads up mate!

        • @Kegsta: good stuff !

        • +1

@jg86tsv: I regret it now, 800GB into copying files the drive shit itself, got stuck on 100% activity, the PC will no longer start with it connected and its loud as hell, Wish I stuck with archive drives.

        • @Kegsta:

That's really unlucky, sorry to hear.

I suggest you throw it back in the external case and get onto amazon, they have fantastic return policies.

If you discarded it buy another one and swapout the faulty drive, they will cover the return postage cost.

I have 4 in production currently that have undergone about 3 full write cycles in a RAID 0 config. Video media library storage.

Unfortunately you never know with HDD's though, you can get dud drives.

I've had a really good run myself only loosing 1 drive in the last 5 years from about 35 disks. Mix of WD and Seagate with a couple of Hitachi's. Not a big enough sample to draw any type of conclusion from.

        • @jg86tsv: Yea I did exactly that already, Looks like many people have had the same issue as me :(
I've got a bunch of archive drives that are silent and never miss a beat.

      • Dang, why are hard drives so cheap from amazon. Puts Australia’s better prices to shame.

      • is WD better ?

        • A non-SMR drive is better than a SMR drive (aka archive drive). This Seagate drive is likely to be an SMR drive, whereas the WD is a regular drive.

SMR drives have slow writes if you are writing a lot of data to it.

        • @renza: Ok Thanks it seem like the WD is much more reliable. I think my last 4TB was SMR i rarely access it and simply use it for Storage and it died so fast. But HDD life span seems to be more like luck.

        • @renza: If this is an SMR HD, will it be okay for storing 1080p high bitrate videos for viewing via Kodi?

        • +1

          @sween64:
It will be fine for any video formats. 1080p 4k 8k no problems.

        • @sween64: Sure, read speeds are fine. It's also fine if you are going to progressively fill the drive over a long period of time. Just don't expect to be able to copy 8tb of data to it quickly in one hit.

        • +1

@renza: Thanks everyone and especially nocure. I bought one :)

OzBargain user cracked his open and his had a BarraCuda Pro (ST8000DM004), sounds like luck of the draw

  • anyone heard if you still get warranty on a shucked drive? you used to, for seagate

    • I doubt that! They are not meant to be opened, right. I'm guessing that's what they'll get you on, and no matter how careful you are, you will still leave a trace where its been pried open

      • Tilac i would normally agree with you, i just recall someone posted a reply from seagate AU tech support on here once where they stated the warranty is valid on a shucked drive as long as the seals on the actual HDD are still intact. Crazy hey. I will e-mail them and ask.

        • It's possible, but I still would not be surprised (and highly expect) if they found out it was shucked & rejected the RMA on those grounds. Then again, if it is covered it should say so in their warranty terms.

    • +8

I have had RMA rejected for shucking a drive. Think it might have been WD.

But I replied to the email saying that I had opened the drive to attempt data recovery and they accepted the RMA after that.

  • I have tried adding data recover plan and Amazon says this can't be shipped
    Any one tried?

    • +3

Recover Plan is for US-based customers only. Don't add that.

    • +1

Yep that's exactly what their retail box is for.

    • +6

Does AU stock arrive via stork or teleportation?

      • +6

Gerry Harvey sits out the back of every store and makes them himself.

    • Erm the hard drive head is parked and unless you sending it while it’s on it’s prerry solid unless you throw 2geforces at it.

  • Would this be good to use for my ps4? My hard drive is full and I can't download any more games.

    • +1

Doesn't look like it will work with ps4.
Review on JB HiFi - "Does not work for ps4 - Bought this for my original ps4 which is fully updated to 4.73 and it detects this as 8.01Tb and does not work. Got my refund luckily."

    • internally or externally?

For internal it needs to be a 2.5 inch drive and slim enough. I added a 2tb to mine a couple years ago.

I'm unsure about the requirements for external but would imagine just about any usb powered portable hard drive would work.

  • Does this come with a US style plug, or does it have changeable plugs that swap out?

    • US style plug I believe - you can pick up an adapter cheap as on eBay

  • Would this be ideal as an everyday-use drive or as a backup/storage drive? (No shucking, just using out of the box)

    • Depends on how you'll use it most. It's going to be bulky to take anywhere and the read/right speeds won't be as fast as a USB3 flash drive.

  • Bought this at Costco 2 weeks ago for $229 but I can't get the software to work with Windows 10 which seems a common problem. The backup process stays in a pending state but never starts.

  • How would you go about warranty if the need arose?

    • You just lodge it on the Seagate website. I believe Seagate are like Western Digital where they are very dance around the fact if they will honor warranties on hard drives imported from overseas, but very likely they'll just do it.

      • This was years ago but that was pretty much it. Fill in a form with serial number etc, maybe date of purchase, I can't remember whether they required proof of purchase but I don't think so. I doubt they even know where every single drive goes to as they are distributed all around the world by 3rd parties anyway. I had to return mine to the Netherlands while in Northern Europe and a week or two later I got a replacement drive back. I'd guess as long as the warranty period is within the date code you'd be alright (google seagate date code). No promises though.

        • Fingers crossed.

  • I haven't received mine yet… :(

  • Wow this has been an ordeal. First order was cancelled as it seems to have been lost during transport. After several emails I've managed to secure a second order at the original price of $159.99 US and with free postage. I hope this one arrives!

    • Sorry to hear that, never had issues with their delivery. More worrisome was how they packed drives - lots of empty space in package, not enough packaging material, drive moved and slided around. That was a while ago, maybe they have improved in this regard(?) Was not happy and provided feedback then.
