damn thought this was Pro. still crying over missing this deal - thought there would be something good on Cyber Monday

    • -4

The $292 is not the Pro. This deal is better anyway.

      • +1

hmm? im referring to the $454 one - PS4 Pro + 5 games

If you want a 4K blu ray player then go for the xbox s. If you want a bigger games library then go for the PS4.

      • +2

If you want a 4K blu ray player then go for the xbox s

Does anyone else find it sad that this is the only thing that's recommended when deciding between the two?

        • +1

That's just because there isn't much between them.

        • +1

Kinda.. I mean what else besides exclusives and personal personality preferences on UI and which team you support can really elsewhere differentiate the two?

        • @ilikeradiohead:

True, although at the end of the day, they are both gaming consoles, so the Xbox isn't doing too well if it can't be recommended for it's library.

        • +3

@Lorindor: there are other differentiators, such as the xbox having a better control pad.

        • @Lorindor: Rubbish. Backwards Compatibility makes the XBox library far greater.

      • +1

And better graphics. Xbox renders most games at 720p whilst PS4 renders most games at 900p thanks to ~40% more powerful GPU.

    • Depends: If you want a good entertainment unit then Xbox is better, if you are serious games then got for PS4.

    • +8

Depends what games you want to play and what your friends play on.
Graphics wise they are not far apart.

      • They are 40% apart graphics wise… PS4 usually at 900p, Xbox usually at 720p and sometimes a tiny bit less lighting effects etc.

        • What is the point of the Pro version? Is it only that it is able to play 4k video?

        • @Major Mess: The PS4 Pro/Xbox One X can both play games in 4K, not just video. Playing games in 4K requires a massive step up in power.

The PS4 Pro also has a boost mode that allows many games to run at the normal resolution but with a much smoother framerate which is very nice. I do not know if the Xbox One X does this.

        • @PiratePete1911: OK so a beefier gpu? The normal version can't generally get to 1080p and even PC's struggle with 4k resolutions. What sort of percentage of games can run at the full 4k?

        • 40% of (profanity) all is still (profanity) all though.
The PS4 Pro, Xbox One X and recent GPUs for PC all thrash both.

        • @Major Mess: all games that support it. it's not true 4k on either console but checkerboard

        • @Major Mess:
Significantly beefier GPU, notably higher CPU clocks and more RAM.

          Xbox One is mostly 720p
          PS4 is mostly 900p
PS4 Pro is mostly 1440p (can be anywhere from 1080 to 2160p) which is then checkerboard up-scaled to 2160p.
Xbox One is mostly rendered in 1600/1800p.

Depending on the game the Pro and X may also benefit from longer draw distances and a few more graphics options ticked (eg fancy shadows and lighting). They also tend to have less dips from their FPS targets. Do note however that many games will still be running at 30 FPS.

Most Xbox exclusive games can be played on PC now so keep that in mind.
      PS4 has some great exclusives.

      • Replace ‘great’ with ‘incredible’

        • -1

          Yeah sure.
Just the Naughty Dog games made it worth it for me.

    • Please see related thread for discussion.

Bought one ($299 HN amex deal) Now just waiting for cheap games to come out.

    • It's a good Planetside 2 simulator if you don't have a comparable gaming laptop or pc.

    • +2

With Xbox you can have EA Access with many full games and 10 hours trial for new releases. I rarely buy new games…and it's $29/year

I have both an Xbox One X and a PS4 Pro. My observations:

      1) PS4 has a bigger games library. Not by a huge amount, but enough to make a difference (Uncharted games, Ratchet & Clank, etc).
      2) PS4 has the option of PS VR if that's your kind of thing.
      3) Xbox tends to have better game sales
      4) You can get good pricing from any market around the world without having to set up multiple Xbox accounts. For PS4, you need multiple accounts in Aus, UK, US etc if you want to get the best pricing, and you'd need to have multiple PS Plus accounts to get the very best pricing.
      5) PS Plus vx Xbox Gold - much of a muchness.
      6) The Controller - Xbox controller is near-universally recognised as the more ergonomic option. It's absolutely true. My wife now refuses to play PS4 games with me because the controller hurts her wrists… I'll have to pick up one of the Nacom revolution controllers I reckon.
      7) The UI - All that ridiculous horizontal scrolling on the PS4 p*sses me off. However Xbox could be easier to use too. (Why have 5 tabs along the top and none of them are "Play games"? Says something about the demographic they're targeting).
      8) 4K bluray is great. I own four 4K blurays though, so it's not necessarily a huge issue. Still, Planet Earth II on 4K bluray will melt your eyes with beauty.

      • 9) is the ps4 still region free and the xbox isn't?

        • For blu-rays yes. But not for games I think - I have imported xbone games from the UK previously and played them with no problems.

        • @mingofmongo: fairly sure both region free for games. But ps4 dlc is region locked

      • 1) PS4 has a bigger games library. Not by a huge amount, but enough to make a difference (Uncharted games, Ratchet & Clank, etc).

As far as exclusives go, its day and night. bloodborne, persona 5, uncharted, horizon zero dawn etc etc… vs? I don't see any point to the xbox if you have a pc

      • +2

        More:

Xbox has 'free' backward compatibility if you have suitable 360/original games. Or get them for cheap. PS4 you have to buy the games (again) on PSN

Xbox games pass has 100+ (mainly 360) games, but its not as cheap as Gold at $11/month with not many discounts about.

Neither let you use the other or old gen controllers (except using http://www.mayflash.com/Index.html)

I have a Xbox with EA gamepass and pickup the occassional other cheap game from EB or sales.

      • +1

        10) Backwards compatibility for Xbox is pretty cool. It means you can pick up a library of great games at a cheap price (eg. Red Dead Redemption, South Park Stick of Truth, Saints Row 3 & 4, etc…). Depending on your taste in "classic" games this might offset some of the issue around the larger library of exclusives on PS4.

    • PS4. Just because of Horizon Zero Dawn

      • It is a great game - currently playing my way through it. Uncharted 4 is also in my top 5 games of all time.

  • +2

I actually decreased my 500GB HDD to my old PS3 256GB SSD. Supplement this with a 2TB xHDD and copy current games back and forth (which isn’t often)

  • Does the Slim use the same power cable as the normal Fat?

Only rease I ask is becasue my Fat's power cable is behind the wall/tv and I cvbfed getting it out

    • Figure 8

      • Been like this since my original Playstation.

    • Let me get this straight, you're too lazy to retrieve a cable that's fallen behind your TV, so you wish to buy a new console that uses a different cable?

      • +1

        No I think you're wrong.
Op wants to use his existing cable because it is routed behind the wall and would be a pain in the ass to replace.

        • Oh - right, that makes more sense.

  • wow ps4s are so cheap already?

    • +1

Well it has been over 4 years…

      • +8

lol I'm out of touch…I still have my PS3!

  • Does this come with a game?

    • I dont think so.

    • No just the console.

  • +1

am just starting on to gaming, do you think I should buy this? what games can I play on these?

    • +1

Yah. PS4 games. Do a quick google search to find out the best ones. Then have fun. The games library on PS4 is amazing & most games run cheap now.

    • +4

Definitely, consoles are a really easy way to get into casual gaming if you're not willing to drop a larger amount of initial money on a PC build. In terms of the games you can play, there's a huge variety. Most games are cross-platform, meaning the developers distribute the same game for each separate platform (PC, Xbox, PS4). Other games are exclusive to a particular console. For example, a lot of PS4 owners would place the Uncharted series and The Last of Us pretty high up in their favourite games (both PS4 exclusives). If you're wanting a more casual, pick-up-and-play kind of game, some of the Call of Duty games are great, and GTA V too. And then there are the huge range of role-playing games (RPGs) that are really popular (games like The Witcher 3, Skyrim, Fallout 4). I'd recommend having a look at some gameplay videos of any of these on YouTube to get a feel for them before you decide what you buy.

This particular model of PS4 is an older model. It still works perfectly well with all the PS4 games, but they'll look a bit better running on the newer PS4 Pro (provided you have a 4K TV as well). Additionally, if you're going to be playing a lot of different games most would find the 500GB hard drive a little small.

        Thank you everyone

    • Horizon Zero Dawn + Frozen Wild DLC.. the only game you'll need for a while

    • +1

don't forget you have to invest on subscription to make it worth your while. (i.e. multiplayer access and some monthly freebies)

      • Cheers

  • Is this deal better?

PlayStation 4 Pro 1TB Glacier White Console + Destiny 2 Deluxe Edition $479 (Was $649) @ EB Games
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/346981

    • Well it's an OK price for standard priced Pro, if you consider paying $200+ OK to get better hardware. But this has been at a lower price https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/344567

    • This is a cheap entry level console. If you want the bells & whistles go the pro. This is a good price considering Americans payed $200 for the base console during Black Friday.

  • Pretty aggressive pricing by Sony to beat out the Xbox sales on Xmas

  • It is backorder.

  • Hey just logged on to buy the PS4 500g and the Sony site said back order and wanted to charge $9 for postage when the add sayers free postage ?? Please explain

    • Red banner at the top of the page:

FREE SHIPPING until 12 Dec for Sony members | Order for Christmas delivery - NSW/VIC/ACT/QLD metro: 15 Dec SA/WA/NT/TAS & non-metro: 12 Dec

    • I will update the post.

      • Thanks OP just confirming you do not have to pay the $9 as long as you register an account (free) before checkout. When I was checking out as guest it was charging $9, but then I made an account and shipping was free. Does say back ordered though.

    • Gotta register an account first. That's what I did.

  • -1

lmao @ all the adamant people that said the PS4 would never go under $300 by the end of this year.

    • +2

Not sure who would've said that considering it was sub $300 in March

      • -5

Sony fanboys trying to justify their purchases.

        • i am hope for sub 200$, wishful thinking?

  • +1

I was going to replace my hardly used PS3 with this, but after reading about the better Pro and what it can't do, maybe I'm not enough of a "gamer" to find it useful.

  • PS4 noob here, why is the 500Gb HDD such a drawback? Can't you get a portable USB HDD to supply additional space?

    • +1

With just the 500GB you can have about 4 or 5 games installed. Since I got my 2TB external and plugged it in I've had a much better experience.
However, only game installs, their updates, and app installs (like Netflix) can go on the external. Everything else will share the HDD inside.

    • No drawback. You can just add a an external usb hdd to expand storage.

  • Put in an order at 10:01 AM, said back order. Received an email saying they're "currently reviewing" my order and I can expect another email from them. Haven't charged my CC yet :/

Pls ozbargain gods be kind to me.

  • What's best for the vr set? Pro or standard?

    • Depends whether the game is optimised for the Pro, otherwise no benefit other than the pro having a USB port in the back.

    • At the moment there's no difference in what VR games can be played on standard vs pro. However as time goes by developers will be able to leverage the better power of the Pro to get better and better performance over the standard edition. In the end though I doubt you'll see PS4 pro exclusive VR games any time soon, articles I've read imply developers will target both consoles which makes sense. Why would they limit their potential market to only pro owners when many still have just a standard PS4?

So basically, PS4 Pro is better but you don't absolutely need it.
