Oh man, I don't need it but I wants it.

    • +1

haha same, I want want but I really dont know why…

    • +1

IKR, there are so many alternatives that are way cheaper but still overall very good Android boxes. However, I still would love to get this lol

    • +5

we got one a couple of months back. since it went in we got rid of the HTPC, appleTV, telstra tv and chromecast.

      pretty good little unit

      • +6

So you're saying I should sell every piece of hardware I own and buy this device…I like your thinking.

        • +3

ha! i guess it depends on what you have connected to your tv. i really liked the idea of having one low power device.

        • +4

@ideasman: Oh I absolutely agree. At the moment I just have the Mi Box which was an upgrade from the rPi but now all I can see is Shield in my eyes.

        • +1

          yes

  • +4

apparently the controller can act as an 'always on' mic which can then act as a Google Home.

    • +1

It's not nearly as sensitive though.

      • +39

        Ok Google.

    • +2

Yes it does and is fantastic.
      Everything is voice controlled.
I prefer the Shield over my Apple TV.

    • I have a 2015 model and the voice search on the remote stopped working. Perhaps I'll try to use the controller for voice search instead with the 'always on' mic, but it's gonna get annoying when so many damn devices respond at the same time.

      • Crap the older controller doesn't have always on mic

  • +3

Brilliant price for a brilliant streaming device! I already have 2 of them!

  • +3

I would recommend waiting for the one with the gaming controller included (used to be standard) to be on special

    • I was tossing up whether to wait for the one with controller to come down until I read I can use my ps4 controller. I guess if you don't have a ps4 then it's worth it.

  • +1

fairly happy with my xiaomi mi box, but i've experienced enough issues with it that i feel like pulling the trigger on this was a good idea

    • +1

Interested to know the issues with the Mi Box as i've been waiting for one to come on sale - we stream netflix and catch up programs through our Sony TV's apps but they're buggy and super slow

      • +1

Mi box has the same issues. Also most catch up apps are not available on android TV store. You need to sideload them.

        • Ahhh that's interesting to know - maybe will just pull the trigger on this too! Thanks for the info ;)

        • The OS on the NVidia will be the same, so if you cant do catch up on MI box you wont be able to on this

        • @urbancartel:

Yeah but Mi Box can be had for 40% of the price of this.

Mi Box does take some time to configure, but once you know its limitations and how to work with it, it is pretty good.

Still the Shield just has a lot more GPU grunt for gaming and is why I'd get it.

        • @serpserpserp: and higher power usage?

        • @asa79:

Shield or Mi Box has higher power usage?

What kind of levels are we look at respectively?

      • The main one that was annoying was this one https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidTV/comments/6mapz0/mibox_net…

Essentially Netflix just didn't work for me, and I consider Netflix to be one of the primary functions of a smart box, so it was pretty annoying. I realise that this issue is not consistent for everyone, and the TV itself might be to blame though.

The workaround for me was to sideload the phone app, which makes for a pretty crappy TV experience.

      • Another smaller but annoying issue that i forgot about is that the Mi Box is unable to write to external drives, due to it still being on Android 6.0. I have the box out in the living room and I'd like to FTP/Wifi share my media from my study to it. The Shield has 7.0 and doesn't seem to have as hard as a time with this.

    • I just set up my mi box. It does most things I need but agree there are a few glitches here and there.

    • +1

I went from a Mi Box to this, the Mi box had a bit of stuttering on Kodi when playing several different movies without a restart, would sometimes stutter when Kodi was updating the library and trying to play something at the same time, no such issues with the Shield

      • +1

Okay, so I just recently bought the Mi Box ( I can return it) so just wondering…

I'm a very casual user thats going to watch maybe 2-5 movies/week on 1080p blu-ray type quality.
Also, I have 0 interest in the gaming aspect of the box.

Will the Mi Box be enough or should I upgrade to the shield for over 2x the price?

        • +1

Mi box should be fine, my issue came from having a toddler who couldn't decide which movie to watch, so in a one hour sitting he'd watch the start of 3 movies and an episode of blues clues, then decide he'd rather play with cars.

        • @SuperC: So MI Box no good for kids watching?

        • @asa79: Its fine as long as on Kodi you don't keep switching 1080p movies

        • @SuperC: Which Kids do alot, lucky dont see much issues on Sony TV with them doing it, so was hopefully MI Box would perform the same

    • Issues specific to the Xiaomi? Sure, initially.

Limitation of Android TV? Yes - on the surface. What I do with mine is use those keyboard and mice combos for apps that dont support it. I side load either via a storage medium, google drive or use chrome and download it that way.

I create forwarders that point to the app (when you install an apk that android tv doesn't support it doesnt display it on the home screen) via TV app Repo. (You can also use sideload launcher but that breaks immersion)

For apps that arent flipped correctly, I just use a orientation app to set the orientation to landscape.

Android tv might seem limiting but it really isnt. At least compared to the roku or apple tv

        • It looks like a hdcp handshake issue. The same exact thing happens on the shield https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/838144/shield-tv/ne…

Its the way the app is programmed. I am sure you went through the relevant troubleshooting process of trying a new hdmi cable or even connecting the mibox up to different tvs?

        • @Hahuh:
I did try two TVs, and two cables. Could have just been bad luck though.

        • @nmur: Most definitely. Youd probably have better luck with newer sets.

Are you using a service to watch overseas netflix?

Maybe just boycott Netflix altogether cause they think being cute involves customers tearing their hair out

        • @Hahuh:
planning to replace my TV soon so fingers crossed

I personally don't watch Netflix too much (would prefer downloading, adsl2+ over wifi doesn't make for great streaming), but my girlfriend does.

        • @nmur: understandable. What I meant was that newer routers often have USB ports used for media server capabilities with upnp or samba like a NAS. You can simply attach a storage medium to it, map the network drive then add the downloaded files from a pc. Afterwards you would use either a file explorer or media center to access the files. This doesn't uses your internal network to stream without relying on your isp

        • I dont understand this usecase. So you want to copy files remotely from your pc to a hdd attached to the mi box?

Why dont you put the things onto the hdd first then attach it?

Does formatting the drive via android tv help?
Maybe root then use an app to fix sd card privileges?

It sounds like you are trying to do things that werent intended with the box. Its android tv not android

I dont recommend it but you can possibly update it to nougat
          https://beebom.com/how-update-mi-box-android-nougat/

        • @Hahuh:
The use case occurs when I want to add additional files to the external drive. if I download another movie, I don't want to physically disconnect the drive from the box and its power supply, connect it to the pc, copy the file, then reconnect it all again. it got pretty tiring when I just wanted one new episode or something.

        • @nmur: Oh ok.

Sounds like an android box without the "TV" component would've been better situated for your use case.

Guess I would do things differently like use the network share. I currently have a usb hdd connected to the router then access it wireless throughout the network. I use my pc to put files onto it.

Then again I pretty much stream my films and tv episodes from sites rather then to download them these days.

  • +1

Great box but everyone needs to be aware of the auto resolution and colour space switching limitations when switching from 1080p to 4K and SDR to HDR.

Apple TV has now fixed the issue on their box so hopefully Nvidia pulls their finger out soon and fixes it with a firmware update.

  • +4

You can Kodi on this I assume?

    • +3

      Yes

    • +3

thats what I use it for primarily

    • +1

Its Android TV, so its just an App, same as on Sony TVs

      • +1

I wouldnt use Kodi on Xiaomi. Runs like ass

        • How bad?

        • @asa79: Well. Maybe for streaming from your own network and local play would suffice. But Ive tried custom rolls of kodi and didnt like the performance

        • @Hahuh: Thats a shame as I was looking at the MI Box just for Kodi and Netflix

  • +1

This can't be the 2017 model if there is a microsd slot?

    • +1

Ye that is what I was thinking too. The 2017 base model does not have the microsd slot. Only the Pro version has it

      • +2

It's probably just an error in the listing. Having said that, if it was the older model i'd buy the 2015 model any day over the 2017 model if had the chance again. I have both. Nothing wrong with the new ones, but the original is a much better quality built unit. 2017 one looks and feels like cheap plastic, and is missing the sd slot. Also don't like the smaller form factor compared to original. The Remote on the 2015 is also way better.

    • Question: Is this the 2017 model
Answer: it should be as Nvidia is no longer selling the old model and if you look at the version that comes with a controller, you can see it is the new one. Specs wise though, they have no difference. Even the software now is the same. Just a slight reduction in size.

        This is 3 x 2 x 8 inches; 2.1 pounds

Does anyone know if these have regional locking. I'd love to play HD Wii games on it but looks like that is only available in China atm. HD Mario Galaxy would be amazing.

    • +1

You could do it now with Gamestream from a LAN PC running Dolphin through Steam, although now that I type that out it sounds expensive and complicated.

I just don't imagine streaming Wii games out of China is going to be a great experience.

      • +4

One of the Nvidia reps confirmed the Wii games are actually native ports and not streamed. Also they are HD rendered and not upscaled. Hence my interest. If there is a way for me buy those games from China's storefront via VPN that would be dope. I'm just not 100% sure if these things are region locked.

        • One of the Nvidia reps confirmed the Wii games are actually native ports and not streamed. Also they are HD rendered and not upscaled.

Oh, I had not heard that. Now I'm interested too.

    • Came here to ask that same question!

    • Dolphin runs on it apparently

  • Is it easy to get USA apps like VUDU and Amazon Video working on the Shield?

    • if sideloading VPN is available on the shield like the mi box for US Netflix, I doubt you would have any issues with VUDU / Amazon

    • +2

Yes, but you will need to setup a US Google account and also use a VPN or DNS redirector to get Vudu to work.

I use Vudu all of the time, is also links to your UV library.

Amazon Video I believe is now available in Google play AU store.

      • +1

What VPN or DNS redirector do you use for Vudu?

  • Can't seem to cast Optus Sports from the phone but works from PC. No problem casting to Chromecast form Phone…not sure where the problem lies, phone/shield?

  • +1

NVidia has a list of recommended USB flash drives for the Shield TV as internal storage, but I'm wondering if any Ozbargainers has personal experiences with theirs—or better yet, deals for the best bang for your buck re: flash drives or external SSDs?

  • +2

Beware that this box does not come with Dolby Vision if that's what you're after. Not that many TVs already support it but if you have an LG OLED one then it's probably worth looking into Apple TV 4K and compare the pros and cons of both.

    • +1

and funnily enough ATV 4K doesn't support Atmos though (apparently coming in future update, eventually). Also no Kodi/SPMC and Amazon Prime Video.

      • I believe the Apple TV now has Amazon Prime video.

    • But the LG OLED's do HDR10 as well, right?

      • +1

yes HDR10 is supported as a minimum/standard for any HDR TV.

    • +1

I have LG OLED and Shield. HDR works fine from Netflix, Vudu (latest release, small catalogue), Amazon Video and Kodi.

Have an Atmos amp but no speakers :)

  • Quite an expensive box , I only use it for movie streaming and YouTube

  • +2

got this during the black Friday deal for same price, great unit. Loaded it up with SPMC 17.6a experimental (http://download.semperpax.com/spmc/android-arm/SPMC-17.6a2-s…) and auto frame-rate AND resolution working flawlessly.

  • My personal experience:-

I have a mibox and chrome cast ultra, which I bought recently because Mi box was not playing ball with google home. with the 1035 beta build the mibox has improved a lot especially when combining play back of movies via SPMC. So if you have both or have one of them already suggest look at other options than buying this.

  • +1

Pick one up this morning to replace my Mi Box
    Hopefully arrives before Christmas
    Present for me :)

    • Still waiting for mine to arrive, Arrived in Sydney 20th Dec
and been sitting there ever since
Was suppose to arrive on 28th Dec
latest in tracking says 4th Jan, if no to contact them (Hopefully the refund postage)

  • I have a full 7.1.4 projector setup.

As I understand I'll be able to ATMOS via Plex with this but not through NETFLIX.

    Is this correct?

    • ATMOS would make the Movies too large to download via Netflix, compared to streaming locally sourced media

      • No,. doesn't work that way. Integrated into the Dolby HD stream.

        • You are aware that for ATMOS the sounds is uncompressed and larger

        • @asa79:
On a uhd disc sure it's uncompressed but Netflix compresses its Atmos audio track. I think I read somewhere it's compressed around 5mbps.

I can stream 4k HDR Atmos shows (punisher) via Netflix on my 15mbps ADSL2 connection using Xbox one x just fine.

  • If you are buying g for the sole purpose of Kodi, then do yourself a favor and get the Minix U9-H . By far the most advanced mdia player with extremely good software support and regular updates.

  • Argh so tempting…..Already have a Minix NEO U1 but I kind of always wanted a shield.

How long will this deal last?

    • I had a Minix U9-H ended up eBaying it as not impressed for a $200+ box, got enough to order a Zidoo X9S - proper box and aluminium case and as pleased as punch with it.

      • I think you were intending to post this to the user above me? lol

  • +1

When can we expect an Aus version of this?

    • Aus version never gets discounted this much. Bought mine with amazon though and it's been flawless.

  • +2

I love my nvidia shield. Fastest android tv I’ve seen. And the game streaming is like magic.

    • quick question. did you have to get a separate US to AU adapter for your device? I'm hoping that they would ship with an AU adapter, but it does not seem likely at this stage.

      • +1

Doesnt ship with one. I had one lying around its a cheap adapter. Source one on ebay or locally while waiting for this to ship?

        • Cool, ta. Good to know.
