  • I thought Telstra was unlimited now?

    • plans $99 and above are unlimited.

  • +1

    unlimited for $99

    • When 1tb of data isnt enough ??

      • +6

Unlimited is for when you want the ability for a few people on the same PoI to trash the performance for everyone on the same ISP.

      • +7

Some people like doing 1st world activities such as backing up 1TB disk images, streaming games and downloading more than 10 games in a month.

Since Malcom Turnbull has ensured third world internet to enrich Telstra at your expense you may not know of such things.

    • -1

I pay 69.95$ for unlim. Speed is around 36Mbs almost constantly.

      • With Telstra?

Do you use Telstra Air also?

      • Can you provide name of your ISP please?

      • You get a neg for not saying who

  • -1

I've considered telstra for telstra air but the 100Mbps from telecube is better for $69 and next month they're going to announce 8k tvs which may require higher peaked speeds.

    https://help.netflix.com/en/node/13444
4k already requires 25mbps according to Netflix, and 8k support may happen before the 24month contract.

    • +32

Will you be able to afford an 8k tv in the next two years? If so you probably don’t care whether your internet costs $50, $100 or $200 per month that’s pocket change when you’re buying a TV that costs more than a car

      • My point is you can get double the speed for less the price, not be congested, and not be in a 24 month contract…
That 8k comment is just me throwing in a bone to say we'd need more than 30Mbps at peak hours without me being rude.

      • But this is OzBargain, not OzFinanciallyResponsibleCitizens. I penny-pinch my internet bill so I can afford the second mortgage to pay for the $40k TV.

    • +20

Ridiculous comment. 8K content doesn't exist except for some Japanese demo reels.

    • +10

Even now when 4k TV is discounted everywhere, 4k content is lacklustre. Maybe in your 2 year frame, only 8k available is Japanese hentai

      • +7

        Isn't that enough?

      • 4k content is lacklustre.

Not at all but it's expensive to get into.

    • Baaaah. I started with a 100mbps plan with telecube but physically could only obtain 26mbps from malcolms bs degraded fttn copper. For some the future is a mere 2mbps upgrade from my prev adsl2+.. Go malcolm go!!!

      • It's very unlikely that you synced at 24 Mbit on ADSL2 but can somehow only sync at 26 Mbit on NBN.

        • Pretty close to full sync on adsl2+. still have screen shots of stat results of line conditions before and after the nbn migration. Ask murray of a pita case. We are all suspecting a faulty nbn migration as we were all like…how can this be… The line was investigated a few times… Nbnco test puts my line at 30mbps/9 max. Modem avg syncs between 26-28 tried diff chipset modem offering…

Despite many protest of a line fault suspect from our side of street… Nbnco claims theyve thoroughly investigated and case is closed. Our copper snakes around who knows and into a pillar then to the node. On a broadcom chipset adsl2 before we could get full sync.

Even though vdsl2 is not as robust in handling tricky line conditions we also could not accept this result. The best they could do is to put us on a stable profile.

Oh btw neighbours on same side of street have similar stats as i. We (16 houses) all are IT junkies and are pretty cluey with this tech. We even explored a tech change scheme route with nbnco and quickly realized the wtf quote was a 6 figure bill between 3 of us (household)..the more interest they say the cheaper..

Across the road copper runs on a diff node and they can get approx 68mbps/12

    You deal is so description!

50 speeds which if you’re lucky are 30 peak. 2 year contract, $80 month. Why is this a deal?

  • This isn't a deal….They had some welcome credits recently not sure if it has ended…

    • What plan do you recommend for FW?

Your Future Wife should try one of the Virgin plans.

        • @CandyMan: Might be able to Price Match and Cash Back, hopefully the coupon code still work…5PUXXIES

    • post the deal?

  • So many NBN deals and we don’t have it in our area yet :(

    • Same here. Maybe by the end of the year. At the moment my sync speed is about 500kb/s

  • Is this for new users? my current contract is FW 50/20 $100/m runs out in Feb.
"Online offer ends 30.01.18 unless extended by us."

    • +1

You'd likely be able to negotiate something better by chatting over the phone with a sales rep re: re-contracting (from experience).

  • +1

Standard Evening Speed for fixed wireless is often worse than ADSL speed.

  • +3

"Provides typical minimum speeds of 30Mbps between 7pm-11pm."

They've really got to stop advertising like this, it's just wrong.

    • +4

The NBN told them too, to prevent complaints. Its better than 'up to 50Mbps' people just see 50 and then complain

    • +7

The great broadband fiasco bought to you by Malcom Turnbull so Telstra is tens of billions of dollars richer.

Are you going to vote for this (profanity) corporate pig next election? Australia voted in the same party after committing war crimes by invading Iraq so probably yes because Australia is braindead.

      • CVC was part of Labor's plan and has nothing to do with MTM.

        • +4

While that is correct, it probably would have been less of a problem with the original FTTP NBN.

With FTTP, you can't blame the last-mile technology for slowdowns, the blame can be 100% identified as the RSP not having supplied enough CVC. So the RSP would be less likely to under-provision.

At the moment, the RSPs regularly try to blame the technology. This gets them off the hook with many customers, who then blame the NBN.

  • Well played, OP.

  • +1

Please update title to say this is NBN. I was hoping this was 4G - for someone like me who can't get NBN.

    • +2

If you have Optus coverage in your area, you can try this 140GB for $70/month (12 months contract) or 100GB for $70/month without contract
      http://www.optus.com.au/shop/broadband/mobile-broadband/data…

Alternatively, OVO offer prepaid $69.99/month and runs on Optus Network

I don't have decent mobile reception with anyone and no NBN…….I'll go and cry now 😢

    • Try Node 1. NBN via a dish.
      https://node1.com.au/residential_nbn.php#FixedWireless
I'd recommend them, had them for about a year.

      • To clarify, I don't have NBN available at my house. When it comes, it will be FTTC (around 2020 I think!), not Fixed wireless, so I can't get this. Yes I live 15 mins from Melbourne CBD and still stuck on very slow ADSL that can barely stream HD Netflix.

        • vivid wireless

        • I don't have cable NBN either, I have a dish on my roof to get Satellite NBN.

I used to have vivid wireless and if you have good optus reception, then they are a good option too.

  • +1

OP literally ignored every suggestion Ozbargain makes when making a post. Perhaps for dramatic affect. Either way, underwhelming.

    • What has the OP done?

      • Its been edited since I posted. Much more vague initially

        • you mean like this? also OP has been offline for 3 hours before the suggestions

        • @Savas: No, I don't mean like that. Nothing to do with thunderbolt cable. I am sure it was edited by a moderator. Are you there yet?

        • @Risto: What do you mean?

  • So nothing out there support the speed they advertise?

    • Try AussieBroadband if they are available in your area. I get 90+mbps during peak. Not the cheapest, but internet is not something worth skimping on.

      • I changed from SkyMesh to AussieBB because of the slow evening speeds on Fixed Wireless in Armidale NSW.
It's not the providers. It's the NBN which is the problem.
Standard Evening Speed is a joke

        • +4

          Welcome to Turnbull broadband.

        • Mostly it is the providers .
Because lots of them not buying enough backhaul to support the connections they have and thus creating a congestion.
Telecube and Aussie broadband are much much better than other big players .
I tried Belong, Optus and Skymesh and finally settled in Telecube now .
I am getting standard evening speed of 85-92 Mbps on a FTTN 100/40 connection .

        • +1

@redcreek200:Fixed Wireless is the original 'dinky die' envelope Rudd Labor design.

  • +1

$80 for 30Mbps 1TB with 24 month lockin is no deal.

  • +2

Why the hell would you lock yourself into a 24 month contract on NBN when nearly every other provider offers month to month?

    • +1

month to month usually costs $10 more.

  • +2

Taxpayer Funded NBN, and we are still being fleeced. Agreed, $80 2 years for 1TB for 30Mbps…which is unattainable BS. I am on a 100/40 Mbps Connection and can only get 21 Mbps on the Fantastic NBN network. I keep getting the BS excuse about the Coexistence with Adsl-2

    • +1

Why don't you shift to a lower speed plan then….

      • scuderiarmani#
Was told by my Provider that if I went to a lower speed, eg 25 Mbps….they only have to Guarantee 30% of that speed.

        • +2

          You may wanna shift providers

    • +1

If you are only getting 21 mbps on a 100 plan, the ACCC has ordered your ISP refund most of your fees to date.

I am with Telstra, was on a 100 mbps plan for 13 months - maximum speed obtainable = 30mbps

I got my refund cheque for $1280 the other day - given i was paying $109 per month for phone + internet - they refunded about 80% of my last 13 months fees.

The problem is going forward i am stuck with crappy 30mbps and NBN co wont do anything to fix that (eg. put in a new node closer to my street)

      • +2

Thanks to Malcolm Turnbull Mess (MTM)!

        • +1

The congestion issues is nothing to do with Liberal.
It's due to the original flawed planning which ignored the importance of backhaul availability and pricing.

You can't give a town 100Mbps (actually 1Tbps capable) connections with cables out of the town only good for 5% of people using it at the same time.

        • +3

          @joelmuzz:
I understand there are congestion issues with many ISPs not buying enough CVC and offering unlimited data.
However, I was referring MTM which limited to his max 30Mbps with his node not close enough.

        • @Joe888:

          Joe888 is right.

Fibre to the node connections suffer dramatic speed losses as soon as your distance to the node increases - has absolutely nothing to do with congestion.

      • GreatWhiteHunter
I only Paying $59 Month, This Situation Sux. I am stuck at 21Mbps. I know how you feel

  • +1

Bear in mind your NBN speed isnt just affected by your ISP - especially for fibre to the node users.

If you are on fibre to the node, the main factors influencing your speed will be distance to the node and the wiring in your house. Neither of these changes regardless of which ISP you choose.

If your node is say 990 metres from your home, as it is in my case, expect maximum connection speeds of ~30mbps. If congestion actual download speeds will be a lot less.

If you have old cheap telephone wiring in your home connected to the lead-in line to your phone outlet, you may experience drops of 10 to 20 mbps in your connection speed until you replace it. Ideally you should only have 1 active outlet in your home for fibre to the node.

Optus has Unlimited broadband @$80 + Optus sports.
that looks like a great deal. However, service quality between Optus and Telstra may vary

    • +3

Stay away from Optus. It was a nightmare for me. Luckily I contacted TIO, after making 12 calls to Optus, with at least 30min waiting time a call…

  • How does Telstra congestion compare to Internode/Aussie Broadband?

  • +1

If you are an existing non-NBN user you might be able to do better. After a lot of running around trying to transition my $78/500GB@100mpbs cable plan I'm now paying $80 for 1000GB (+ 500GB bonus) @ 100mbps including the 4g backup gateway.

Whirlpool has a bunch of info on transitioning to NBN, but it's not always straight forward. I tried without success for a couple of weeks before putting in a complaint that I was being rejected for transition due to the age of my bundle while customers with Telstra for much less period were getting NBN deals without issue.

The gist of it is that Telstra sent out letters/flyers that you can switch to the NBN without paying extra, but their systems apparently don't always allow a simple swap to equivalent NBN plan.

    • Your $80/m including 4G backup.. is that Telstra's plan?

  • +1

Looking at the offering I might consider the $99 plan to obtain the 4G backup with the frontier modem.
Having an unlimited 4G (6Mbps) connection (unplug and take on holidays etc) doesn't seem too bad to me.

    my opinion only

    • Saw this in the fine print last week (4G at 6mbps). Isn't that a bit slow?

      • Adsl speed and it is a backup remember.

      • I think its 10mbps, but its definitely crippled. I know because i have the modem and have constant dropouts from the physical NBN connection.

  • +1

you all forget the NBN New Development Charge $300

    • +1

Most people wouldn't have to pay that.

      • +1

        some do..new areas

  • Im about to move and can either get Telstra cable or adsl2. NBN rollout has stopped till September. Telstra won't negotiate at all as I have no other option if I want the speeds of cable.

  • Which ISP can sustain 100 speed during peak times? If Telstra can't, who can?

    • +2

I get close to my max sync speeds of 80Mbps down and 39Mbps up on Aussie Broadband 24 hours a day seven days a week. They are one of the few ISPs that are serious about stamping out congestion on their network so I would definitely recommend them.

      • Is this a temporary thing? Wouldn't it be very expensive to add more CVC every time it starts getting slow? How can they afford this?

Or is it a matter of, they're new, not many are using them.. once the leechers migrate over it will be the same as every other ISP?

        • they stop taking customers after the 80% threshold, so there is 20% buffer to make sure no congestion will ever occur

        • ABB cost slightly more and don't sell unlimited plans so leechers would hopefully avoid them.

        • @phunkydude: I don't know how long this is sustainable for. They're turning away customers. It's a matter of time before they'll be pressured into either taking them, or folding.

    • +2

      Try Aussie Broadband

    • +1

I am with Telecube for the last 7 months on a 100/40 FTTN plan .
They are excellent in quality of service and the customer care .
I am getting peak hours speeds of about 85-92 Mbps .

From the feedbacks of Aussie broadband customers in whirlpool forum , they too are good .

    • Like others, my Aussiebroadband is holding up at full speed, faster than my wifi so phone can't measure, cable to PC holds 90+ in peak.

Though I am in Wollongong which is MyRepublics "gigatown" where people are getting an honest 700Mbps on their Gbps plan so it has better infrastructure than most places.

  • Noob question but do they normally waive the $99 activation fee? (like gym memberships I guess)
Looking to switch over from iiNet now that Telstra is cheaper and offer more data (non-nbn area)
    Thanks
