Hahahahahahahahaha rather get a Subaru WRX with that money.

    • +6

Then clearly this product isn't designed for you?

      • +5

Can't edit videos with a Subaru WRX.

        • +12

Don't have videos to edit without the WRX tho ;)

          "watch this Habib!"

        • Can’t drive to work in an iMac Pro.

    • Can a WRX check your emails?

      • +2

The government can and yet they don't do anything for me either!

    • -2

      Why? lol

I bought a corolla Zr for $30k cash recently. What would a WRX offer me?

      • +6

30k??! Dude you could have bought 4 iMacs with that 😜

        • -3

Yeah, I wanted leather seats, LED lights, Sat NAV, fancy interior trim etc.

Coughed up the extra $8k. My only gripe with the car is the CVT engine. I find myself braking half the time.

I am saving up for a Lexus GS F. Gonna hand this Corolla off to my parents.

        • +3

          @smuggler:

CVT Engine? What even is that?

        • @maxwellian:

I meant transmission. I don't really know much about cars.

You obviously knew what I meant.

        • +6

          @smuggler:

I don't really know much about cars.

          Clearly, you bought a Corolla!

        • @viggenn:

One of the most reliable cars ever made. My interior is leather and simple. Can't complain.

What do you drive and what are your qualifications which make you an authority on what makes a good car?

I rarely go above 90 km/h. I live in suburban sydney.

        • +1

@smuggler: Lexus is the car for people with plenty of cash but who are too boring to do anything with it.

        • @MikeKulls:

Or, you know, people who enjoy the luxury of japanese engineering and style.

          European luxury makes me hurl.

        • @smuggler: people who enjoy luxury cars are uninteresting. I've been in plenty of luxury cars and luxury is simply there to show off to your friends. It does not enhance your life one bit. A real car serves a real purpose such as towing, 4wding or track days

        • +1

          @MikeKulls:

people who enjoy luxury cars are uninteresting

Sounds like a bit of tall poppy syndrome coming from you.

I've been in plenty of luxury cars

Yeah yeah yeah. Just a bit empty in the wallet to afford one. People are always jealous of others for being able to afford things that they will never have and just discredit the car. Come on man, you sound kind of pathetic.
My father's Jaguar is a gorgeous machine. Feels like a proper car with an engine that plays music. I honestly cannot wait 2-3 more years before I can afford one.

        • @smuggler: What kind of Jaguar?

        • @Burnertoasty:

          XF 35T V6 sedan.

He got it for a good price at the Suttons dealership in Sydney. The staff also threw in a bunch of options because it was a 2016 vehicle and didn't charge him RRP for it. Highly recommend them.
Pretty sure the business is family owned too.

The handling is superb. It really sticks to the road quite well too.

        • @smuggler: Should have got a Tesla for the money. I'm assuming its around $140k.

        • @smuggler: I could well and truly afford a luxury car if I wanted it. I paid a good price for a series 6 RX7 about 15 years ago and still have it. I just recently bought 8 acres within 1 hr from the city and bought a decent caravan a couple of weeks ago. Everything I have serves a purpose and isn't design to show off to my mates how much money I have.

        • @MikeKulls: if you think I sound pathetic you should hear youself "of I just spent $30k on the world's most boring car, I've got so much cash I'm just going to give it away and buy a Lexus".

        • @MikeKulls: “I just spent $30k on the most boring unreliable car”

          FTFY

        • @jackary: are corollas unreliable?

      • +3

The street cred of you hanging with an arm out the window, while revving at the lights and then when the lights turn green you stall the engine and then everyone else gets a laugh at your expense, while the normal folk get to deive off normally in their Rolla. That is what a WRX offers you for $7k.

  • +1

This actually beats the edu pricing on the Apple website, which is $6709.
Personally (if I was going for this kind of machine), I'd choose the 10 core Vega 64 graphics model. Holy balls, that becomes $8739.

    • Well bloody hope you are making some money off the machine be it videos, film, photos, music.

Or you could treat it like an art piece to put in a desk somewhere in your home. I can imagine it looking pretty slick.

    • I’d love to see some good real world comparisons of the 8 vs 10 Core chip for workloads like video rendering. Same with Vega 56 vs 64.

That would really show me if it’s worth the $2.5k that those two upgrades cost. You’d probably need to bump to 64GB RAM to make the most of them though, so you’re looking at $4k worth of upgrades.

But I spend a lot of my working life in Adobe Bridge/Photoshop/After Effects and Final Cut Pro X, and it would be great to see how much time is saved using effects like Colorista and Neat Video noise reduction. Less time waiting for effects to render is more time I can be working on the next job.

      • +1

I run a post facility here in Sydney Located in Fox Studios. I'm really interested in seeing how efficient the cooling is as well as the performance of the GPU when using Blackmagic Resolve. It killed a few of my trashcans :D

        • Were they warranty?

A lot of the reading I’ve done seems to suggest they are still erring on the side of silence over temps.

Haven’t felt an iMac Pro under load in person, but the normal iMac i7’s get pretty darn warm but never loud.

        • @Mitch889: Some where some weren't, but were fixed under an unanounced/unpublished apple deal. Once fixed the GPUs failed again under Resolve because of the insufficient cooling design. I just hope these don't suffer from the same problem.

        • @Roemac: Urgh that sucks to hear.

        • Resolve is where this machine will shine for sure

  • +1

Problem is that it's not customisable unlike the imac. And this isnt made to order

  • +2

    Base o this, https://www.nicehash.com/profitability-calculator/amd-rx-veg…
You will get $100 a month, plus $50 for cpu mining on Monero.

Basically you will get your $6569.10 back in 43 MONTHS.

And you get a iMac pro for FREE.

    • That's a cool little calculator

    • Wait, what is this?

    • +1

LOL. If power is free (solar) maybe… I lost money on niceminer, then they lost my money and now they are back ~ no thanks, and then bittconect stole everything else when it crashed as it WAS A PONZI SCHEME (so that was a lie) and warranty on your mac wont be worth squat if you do this (they CAN tell) ~ so cant say I at all recommend it

  • +5

Just make a Hackintosh for half the price.

    • If you include the same components, I highly doubt it is gonna be half price. More like 1000 cheaper.

      • Well challenge accepted. Let's break this down when I am on my PC. Anyone else wanna do a comparable hackintosh?
        https://au.pcpartpicker.com/

      • built a 8 core ryzen with 8 cores, 32gb 500gb ssd m.2 ect… good 30" screen with sound $3500

        • Could you show a breakup of prices?
Because the monitor by itself is around 1900 from apple or 2800 from dell.
Also Apple's machine has 2x500gb NVMe. What about a GPU?

If you do not need all these components, maybe that machine is not for you.

    • Afaik you can't get 5k output on that monitor unless you're using a mac

  • -1

So if it is price error, how much is the retail price? 15000 dollars?

    • I think the potential pricing error refers to the fine print that says this model is meant to be excluded from the 10% off.

  • +2

How does this compare to Surface Studio?

    • It doesn't.

Microsoft Surface Studio makes use of 6th-gen Intel i5/i7 mobile CPUs and nVidia 965-980M mobile graphics. Aside from the adjustable touch-screen display, pretty sure it's outclassed in every way by even a standard iMac 27-inch.

      • +2

        Definitely a different market.

The displays in the Surface studios are absolutely awesome though, and being able to completely change its orientation (and touch and draw on it) puts it in another class! Amazing color reproduction too!

        • They are, though the iMac display is terrific as well.

It feels like such a missed opportunity for Microsoft. If they’d made the base a bit bigger to incorporate desktop-class components I expect it would have had a wider reach. Adobe users would love a fast CPU with a proper Nvidia GPU.

        • +2

          @Mitch889:
Microsofts strategy is not the same as Apples.

Microsoft only makes devices to invigorate PC designs (by drumming up competition in terms of form factors and designs). They don't actually make their devices to be the number one PC design, it just has to force the competition to compete (they explain this in all of their Microsoft events).

Microsoft makes more money off licensing and client data when machines are bought (regardless of manufacturers), as opposed to being profitable in the Surface line of computers.

This is why there has been so much innovation and amazing laptops in the PC sector (form factors, power combinations, etc), whereas the Apple stuff has stagnated in this area.

Used to be that it was impossible to buy a decent PC laptop, and the only decent laptop was an apple, but even Acer makes amazingly designed machines nowadays (which is why there is so much hate against the Apple "Pro" laptop series, which haven't steered too far away from even the old PPC G4 machines).

      • +1

pretty sure it's outclassed in every way by even a standard iMac 27-inch.

The Surface Studio is in a class of its own. Nothing like it has ever been created. For you to just flat out insult the innovation behind it shows me you have zero clue about computers and the industry in general.
How on earth does an iMAC out class a surface studio? The internals in the iMACs are mostly sourced from other companies. At the end of the day, it's just an all-in-one with no touch screen. There's nothing you can't do with a top spec surface studio than you can do with a top spec imac. Do you honestly think CPUs are that much faster than they were 3 years ago?

It seems like you're making a fuss about hardware which doesn't really add a whole lot in optimising a professional's workflow. Stick to your benchmarks, kid

        • Haha, amazing what you can do with selective quotes.

I highlighted the Studios adjustable touch screen display as its strength, but the rest of the hardware is unquestionably weaker. The mobile CPUs and comparatively weak GPU make it a poor choice for video workflows (my bread and butter) for sure.

The iMacs internals are just as outsourced as the Studios too. Intel CPU, AMD/Nvidia GPUs, hard drives, display panels. All made by others.

  • +8

    Thanks OP, bought 3

    • If you buy 10, it's 10*10%=100% discount. LOL
But then why are you on Ozbargain if you have that much DISposable money?

      • because why pay more when you can pay less??

  • lalalalalala just here to complain with apple. <3 gotta love these people

  • +1

I hope the Surface Studio has these guts in the next revision. Because this is great.
I would love the SS to replace my desktop currently but having played around with it, it's so under-powered.

    • That's the disappointing thing. It's such a beautiful design, but using such low powered parts it was at a big disadvantage straight out of the gate. It should have been the Windows iMac, but its both much more expensive and much slower.

      • but using such low powered parts it was at a big disadvantage straight out of the gate

I disagree. It has everything you need to work with 4k video.

It should have been the Windows iMac, but its both much more expensive and much slower.

No, it isn't. Do you honestly think people are running these machines at 100% load 24/7? Real-world usage yields little to no difference.

        it's so under-powered.

Are you playing games or something? Buy a gaming computer.

        • A maxed out Surface Studio costs $6,599.00. Comes with a quad core laptop CPU, which is about as fast as a i5-6500. The GPU is a 980MX, which is a step down from a GTX 1060. The 2TB of storage on the Surface Studio is hard-drive with 128 Gb of PCI-E SSD in some hybrid setup.

The iMac Pro is a workstation in an all-in-one, the Surface Studio is a laptop inside an all-in-one.

        • @NoRotation: Exactly.

  • Shoot, all sold out. I knew I should have been quicker…

  • +2

Over six and a half thousand dollars and it might be a pricing error?

    Has someone hijacked Ozbargain?

  • Here's a review from the SMH: admittedly the 10 core: http://www.smh.com.au/technology/innovation/imac-pro-review-…

    • +1

"Your headline states $7299. Then you test a machine that costs $14,659." Is it still worth THAT price?

  • Can this mine bitcoin?

    • +1

Yes, but that's not its purpose so it becomes a bad investment for that especially at this price.

  • This iMac Pro sold out already. You can still preorder it though. Idk who is the target market is so can't criticize it.

    • +4

It is if you can’t find a cheaper price elsewhere.

  • +5

I missed out on the free Fidget Spinner so I will pick up one of these instead.

    • I'll swap if you wish? I'll pay my postage and you can pay yours…

  • +5

Much as I might criticize Apple's seemingly over priced stuff, our daughter insisted on one of those top end MacBook thingies when she started university about 8 years ago. In the end I weakened and splurged the dollars.

Over the years the macbook has had a number of updates and upgrades (OS and HDD mainly), and it continues to its stuff.

I concede; horribly over priced in the first instance, exceptional value in the long run.

    • +1

Your point is kind of contradictory. The fact that it has lasted suggests it wasn't overpriced but was in fact good value.

An elderly aunt of mine recently had her $500 Dell laptop completely die after two years. Never left the house, was mostly used at a desk in her study and never did any more than email and web browsing. She had to buy another machine that also cost around $500. That to me feels overpriced.

      • +2

"Your point is kind of contradictory."

Exactly. To emphasise, I nearly had heart failure at the time of the purchase when I was told the price. IIRC, I could have bought three mid range, well specified, non apple notebooks for the same money. Yet in the end the MacBook has proved to be a good buy.

    • -1

I still have all my built computers (some over 10 years), eg. 2012 i7-3770 16G Ram… for $678 (reusing Antec p150 with much more ergonomic Dell monitor & used for video editing) & think that iCult Non-Ergonomic Shiny(reflective) gear is ridiculously OVERPRICED.

    • Not always the case

I have a pc and mac bought at the same time

The pc is dead, no longer boots up

      The Mac still being used

      • Yeah but is it running the latest Mac OS? If it is, then I wouldn't consider it old at all!

      • -1

The pc is dead, no longer boots up

I've had 15 Windows computers in the past 20 years.

All work fine, because I'm not illiterate and break my computer by downloading viruses or leaving it to collect tonnes of dust.

    • That really doesn't say much about the value…

I've still got a HP laptop that I bought during the Rudd's rebate (so about 8-9 y.o by now), costed me 900 at the time and was my daily driver till 3-4 years ago, still use it every now and then. I also bought my mum a $400 asus laptop about 1-2 years after that, still kicking to this day. She uses it to watch her K-dramas and browse the web.

I bet my mums laptop makes both of our computers look like super overpriced pieces of hardware now hey! /s

  • -2

No thank you for such pricing

Rather get an old car to drive

  • -5

    yeah this is a joke,..

for a mackbooks pro i get it, its alot nicer and quality.

for this nonsense,. its the same hard ware you can get for a fraction of the price, AND lets face it 5k at 27" is a waste, even 4k is a waste,.. i much prefer my 40" 4k monitor.

yeah, but sorry apple, im afraid no one is that stupid to be forking out this amount of money…. and i have the iphone x ;-)

i do like the new black keyboard though.

    • +2

I challenge you to create a same spec'd build at a "Fraction of the price". A number of people/websites have tried to do it but cant. Dont forget to add in the operating system. I'll happily ignore the other nicities like small form factor, Apple support etc.. in the comparison.

        have a nice australia day.

        • +1

Think that's enough booze for you today.

      • Why can't they do it? All the hackintosh needs is driver support for the GPU.

You can always build computers with more performance at a lower price.

        • The main issue is that you need to get a top notch case and a quality power supply in a PC equivalent setup. You don't get rubbish case and power supply for an expensive PC. The 5K display is also expensive (even though you get more ports, and it is height adjustable / VESA stand). Then, there is the motherboard, which again you would pick a better one (let's face it Foxconn is good at making cheaper motherboards).

If iMac Pro has exactly the parts you want/need, then great. I am not so sure about the 5K 27 inch display. I reckon 4K on 27 inch is already means the pixels are tiny… 5K… Other than video editing, 5K or even 4K at 27 inch means you are doing 1.5X desktop scaling.

      • PCPartPicker did come up with one and it did show iMac Pro is reasonably well priced, but PCPartPicker picked GTX 1080Ti, and it had to pick a standalone monitor (which means it can also be used for other devices - XBox One X, PS4 Pro, or another PC. I also don't quite get why they also included a liquid CPU cooler.

The thing is, if you spent that much on a PC or a Mac, you would like it to be upgradable. Multi-monitor via USB-C/thunderbolt is annoying (I guess it is doable, but it takes away one of the USB-C ports, and don't pretend using a dongle with lots of ports including HDMI, USB-C etc… as an option because the bandwidth on the HDMI port is reduced once you go through one of those multi-port dongles). You also need to buy USB-C to HDMI or USB-C to displayport cable if you want to go multi-monitor. Cheap cables have issues. Expensive ones… well, I guess if you can afford an iMac Pro, those expensive ones shouldn't be a problem.

For work, I reckon iMac Pro is a good option (or if desk space is really a concern). Macbook Pros, I have one and I really cannot stand the fact that there is ZERO USB-A port (all USB 3.0 ports). The fact that iMac Pros still have USB-A ports basically indicate it was a cost saving exercise for Apple (which is just nuts - one of the reasons that Macbook Pros were so great was they had a comprehensive list of ports).

  • This is a absolute bargain for a pc

  • The reason businesses don't build a hackintosh for half the price is time is money. Sometimes I wonder if most people posting here have had a real job before.

    • +1

Yep, a lot of people don’t get that. All they see is upfront dollar signs.

      • +1

An editor sitting there for half a day could easily cost you half their fee ($500) and even more if you lose the next project because you missed a deadline with your editor sitting there trying to get the hackintosh working with the new premiere version that the project was created in.

  • +1

A lot of people here are just trying to compare spec for spec, the issue is the software suite on Mac (especially Final Cut Pro) is just optimised so much better on Mac hardware. I do video editing as a hobby and have a very beefy Windows PC, Skylake i7 @ 4.8ghz, GTX1070, 32gb ram etc with Cuda acceleration and i can tell you editing 4k video on adobe premiere runs like an absolute dog. Turn on my 2015 Macbook Pro with i7, final cut pro lets me edit same footage in real time and export at over 4x faster than what my latest windows beast will do. Make a hackintosh you say? Good luck geting all final cut pro optimisations to work with the nonstandard hardware, I've spent months trying. Ended up selling my windows computer. If my 2015 Macbook does well, I can only imagine how fast this machine would be, would easily be justified for any professional.
