American Express Qantas Ultimate Card - 100,000 Bonus Qantas Points ($450 Annual Fee)

1060

American Express have today increased the sign on bonus for the Qantas Ultimate card to up to 100,000 Qantas frequent flyer points when you sign up via the standard link

You will receive 100,000 bonus points when you apply online by 9 April 2018, are approved and spend $3000 on the card within the first 3 months. This offer is available to new Card Members as well as Bank-issued American Express companion cardholders.

In addition, receive $450 Qantas Travel Credit each year, 2 American Express Lounge entries each year, 2 Qantas Club Lounge invitations each year.

You’ll also receive complimentary Qantas epiQure Premium Membership. This allows you to enjoy gourmet food, exceptional wines and exclusive access to food and wine events around Australia. Delivery is only available within Australia and is complimentary as part of your Qantas epiQure Premium Membership. Plus, you’ll also earn a high rate of 3 Qantas Points per $1 spent on Qantas epiQure purchases. This is in addition to the 1.5 Qantas Points per $1 spent that you earn for spending on eligible purchases on your Card.

Points earn rate:
Get rewarded with up to 2.5 Qantas Points per $1 spent. There’s no cap on the amount of Qantas Points you can earn, plus we’ll transfer your points straight to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account each month.

Earn 1.5 Qantas Points for every $1 spent on Card purchases, except spend at government bodies in Australia where you will earn 0.5 Qantas Points per $1 spent

Earn 1 additional Qantas Point per $1 spent on selected Qantas products and services in Australia

No cap on earn rate. You’ll receive up to 2.5 Qantas Points per $1 spent, no matter how much you spend each month.

To apply, you must have a household gross (pre-tax) annual income of $65,000 or more (note that this used to be personal income only - so people with lower incomes will be heartened that AMEX has now expanded this to 'household').

The annual fee for this card is fairly steep, at $450, but 100,000 Qantas points is one of the most generous sign up bonuses at the moment.

Referral Links now also offer the 100k bonus, increased from 65k

Some Referral bonuses may still remain active until the 11 of April (Click "Show More" button to expand the referral box).

how much is 100,000 points worth?

    • +3

      28,000 Points
A Qantas Economy one way Classic Flight Reward from Sydney to Hong Kong, from 28,000 Qantas Points plus taxes, fees and carrier charges AU $159.42

      45,000 Points
A Qantas Economy one way Classic Flight Reward from Brisbane to San Francisco, from 45,000 Qantas Points plus taxes, fees and carrier charges AU $431.15

      60,000 Points
A Qantas Economy one way Classic Flight Reward from Melbourne to Paris, from 60,000 Qantas Points plus taxes, fees and carrier charges AU $387.94

Or you could use them for business class - it’s 60k one way in business Melbourne to Singapore or Sydney to Bangkok. Plus taxes etc.

      • +4

You can also book on other Oneworld airlines with QF points. Booking with Cathay instead of Qantas can save you a few hundred dollars in taxes while paying the same in points.

    • $1000 if you sell the points.

      • How do you sell? Can only transfer to family?

        • @Skramit: Fully recommend Tuvz in that link. Used him many times for myself, friends and family. Even managed to get rid of 84,000 Qatar points that way (which were going to expire soon). For those who have Qatar, you know how hard that can be. :-)

        • @danielh: I have too :)

  • +3

Even though the sign up fee is steep, the $450 Qantas Travel Credit each year pays off for it :)

    • when do you get the first $450 travel credit? Is the first lot after 1 year?

      • +3

Usually once you’ve paid the annual fee

        • Can you transfer this Qantas Travel Credit to someone else (i.e. sell it to someone on a forum)?
This seams like a good deal, but the annual feel seems like a deal breaker???

    • Definitely!

    • How do the real-world fees stack up though? I see 2.5-3% at most places that accept it.

      • +1

I don't use my amex is there is a fee that high, many now accept AMEX without fee. Those that charge a fee also charge for VISA as well and it's usually on par or just higher.

I earned 72% of points on AMEX last month compared with only 18% on my VISA.

    • Does the $450 travel credit apply every year in perpetuity that you have this card?

I looked through the T&C and the only mention of the travel credit is that it applies after you pay the $450 fee.

Just a little concerned about what happens if a couple years down the road, they raise the annual fees but keep the travel credit at $450.

The card fee is a little steep, so the travel credit is pretty much what I am counting on right now :)

I don't really lunch in NYC so prob dont need it

    • But I can even recommend places to eat in NYC… :-) best city ever.

      • Going in April…where do you suggest!

        • Katz’s Deli, Joe’s Pizza Bleeker St, Hill Country BBQ, DB’s.

  • Do you get the points if you already have an Explorer? Or better said, do you get them if you are NOT a new customer.

    • +1

This offer is available to new Card Members as well as Bank-issued American Express companion cardholders. So if you hold explorer, probably not. Perhaps a partner could apply?

Don't forget to use the referral link above to share the love :)
    Under Qantas Ultimate Card

    • +1

Still only lists 65,000 points sadly

      • Good pick up. That's a bit annoying!

      • I wonder how likely it is going to increase to 100k…

        • It has since gone up to 100k. Thanks for all the negs. Much appreciated when trying to help out fellow ozbargainers.

  • Which is better, this or the Amex explorer?

    • +3

Do you want Qantas points or not?

    • +8

      explorer imo.
qantas points are too hard to redeem, got 500k sitting here.

just today, I used my explorer points to book singapore airlines to Frankfurt return in June, business class all the way for 255k points + ~AU$250 in taxes.
Peak summer travel booked 4.5 months prior to departure!
      Couldn't do that with qantas

      • +1

        Good stuff daft :)

        • Thks mate.. it is an easy game, just needs time to learn

      • -1

Wow that's a lot, interested in selling some? :)

        • +1

Lol no thanks. Not worth the 1c going rate. Will use them 1 day for a RTW ticket with the family maybe.

      • +3

But you could have gone RTW, with five stops from memory, for 280k points, business class all the way. Normally have to book quite a few months in advance, but still, that's heaps better than a return trip to Frankfurt only?

        • +2

I travel mostly for work (self employed) at short notice. So this is a 1wk trip to attend an exhibition.

Actually this is the earliest I've booked. Last year I booked 2 months before flying business to Munich for 1wk work trip and still found availability with SQ easily.

Will go RTW once my kid is older.. got enough points banked up for that 😉

        • @daft009: I'm guessing availability to LHR or CDG wouldn't be as easy to find as FRA or MUC though?

        • @MathNerd: give me some dates and I can take a quick look..

I'd think CDG wouldn't be too bad but yeah you could also do Dusseldorf or Frankfurt and it's only a short train ride to Paris

        • qantas said this RTW is from 280k points and asked me to use their multi city tool to calculate the real cost. A simple Brisbane ->Johannesburg -> Moscow -> London -> New York is already adding up to 300,000 points with London -> Buenos Aires -> Brisbane to be added up. something is not quite right here. How do you guys book the RTW ticket with points?

        • @eye: the booking needs to satisfy certain conditions. May be have a read https://www.ausbt.com.au/how-to-fly-round-the-world-using-qa…

      • By too hard to redeem, do you mean that its much more expensive compared to using Amex explorer?

Or that its not available at all? I thought you could use Qantas points on oneworld flights, so couldn't you have booked your trip to Frankfurt with Q points?

Sorry if I'm sounding daft, but i'm still trying to figure out which to choose between this and the Amex Explorer. Am new to the points game!

  • +1

Can the $450 credit be only used for flights or hotels as well?

    • $450 Qantas Travel Credit each year. Use your Qantas Travel Credit for eligible international or domestic Qantas flights when you book and pay online at American Express Travel.

      • Yep read that but when you go to the link to book it does give you options for Hotel.

        • +1

If you click through you'll find that the credit is only valid for Qantas flights.

        • @Meconium:

Correct. It will only apply during checkout to Qantas flights.

        • You can only use it for Qantas flights.

  • Does anyone have experience to know if booking through AMEX travel is similar, cheaper or more expensive compared to booking direct with Qantas?

    • My flights came out as the same cost using their and Qantas flight. Not the red deals though..

    • +1

I booked a flight the other day that cost the same as a red e-deal return on the Qantas website. The downside is that you can only use the credit on Qantas flights, when if you were spending your own money you could choose whatever airline was cheapest at the time.

    • +3

I've also used it to book domestic travel with qantas & virgin.
both were exactly the same price as going to them direct.

the other benefit of amex travel is no surcharge for using amex to pay the extra and you get 1ppd extra when booking!
So with the explorer I actually got 3ppd for the amount that was over the travel credit

      • +1

        Nice perk!

      • Where does it say you get an extra ppd when booking via Amex travel?

  • damn the visa requirement…

  • +2

Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited, in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for the Bonus Qantas Points offer. Previous and existing bank-issued American Express companion cardholders are eligible for this offer (cards issued by: Australia New Zealand Banking Group Limited, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, National Australia Bank, Westpac Banking Corporation).

    • Is a supplementary card holder considered a card member? I currently have an Amex card with my wife as a supplementary card holder. Was considering getting this for my wife as we will be losing our Westpac Amex cards in April. I will ask Amex but curious if anyone has first hand experience.

      • +2

Supp doesn't count. So she will get the bonus

      • I’m interested in this as well.

        • Apply, no issues with supp getting full points

      • I chatted with Amex online and they confirmed bonus points would apply to supplementary card holder on a new card in own name.

  • Can you sell the AMEX lounge entries and the Qantas club entries?

    • Qantas club invites yes

      • I hear its digital now

        • Can still sell the digital invites, just need name and Qantas number to assign.

  • How much do you have to earn?

    65K+

    • +5

Are you answering your own question?

      • edit: 65k+

  • The 3k spend required in 3 months… would paying bills on the card such as electricity, water & land rates count towards the 3k spend ?

  • Does anybody know if I have an amex corporate card from the office, will I still get the 100k points or not if I apply?

    • Just called them and corporate card from work is not considered as having a previous amex card so you still get the 100K points

  • Yesss been waiting for this deal :)

  • Never had and Amex - are they widely accepted? I see ‘no amex’ scrawled on lots of eftpos machines at takeaways.

Can you use them with payWave and Apple Pay?

What are the fees like per transaction?

  • Does anyone know if the Qantas travel credit can be used on Jetstar?

  • Your referral link isn’t working :(

    • Just chatting to Amex they said there are no referrals to Ultimate currently. Can anyone comment.

    • Yes itgrt should be. What is the issue?

      • SORRY, it looks like something went wrong.
        This could be:
        - A missing character
        - Incorrect character case
To correct please check the American Express Referral Link before trying again.

  • Thank you! Been waiting for this!

    Quick Question:
    - Get rewarded with up to 2.5 Qantas Points per $1 spent. There’s no cap on the amount of Qantas Points you can earn, plus we’ll transfer your points straight to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account each month.
    - Earn 1.5 Qantas Points for every $1 spent on Card purchases, except spend at government bodies in Australia where you will earn 0.5 Qantas Points per $1 spent
    - Earn 1 additional Qantas Point per $1 spent on selected Qantas products and services in Australia
    - No cap on earn rate. You’ll receive up to 2.5 Qantas Points per $1 spent, no matter how much you spend each month.

So is it 1.5 points for every $1 or 2.5 points for every dollar (re line 1,2 and 4)? It's confusing …

    • 2.5 if it is on selected Qantas products and services, 1.5 for everything else

      • How did you interpret this?

        • +1

Line 1 explains how much you can potentially earn

Line 2 explains what you normally earn

Line 3 explains how you get the max potential earn

Line 4 is a repeat of line 1

I also hold this card and have been earning at those rates.

        • @link90:
          ta

edit: oh right "up to" on the first line. not sure how i missed that.

  • Darn! I really want to apply for this but I currently have the Qantas Discovery card

    • You won't get the bonus points if you do.

  • Everything about this card looks good except from what i can tell if my wife is travelling with me she ISN'T covered by the complimentary travel insurance. I know what you're going to say "complimentary insurances aren't that good" thing is that they ARE - we had a medical incident on a trip to the USA and thank god they did because it saved me about $75K.

Am I misreading the T&C's here?

    • +1

Ignore this question - I just looked up the definition of "Primary Card Member". What threw me is that i was searching for spouse but they said spouse in one section and then broke it down as per 2. below.

      Primary Card Member means:
      1. the person who applied for the Qantas American Express Ultimate
Card Account and who is issued a Qantas American Express Ultimate
Card Account as the primary account holder; and
      2. their husband, wife, fiance(e), de-facto or life partner with whom they
      have continuously cohabited for a period of six (6) months or more;
      and
      3. their legally dependent children (including stepchildren or legally
adopted children) who are twenty-two (22) years of age or less and
wholly dependent on them for financial support.

      • So the entire family is covered?

I wholeheartedly agree with your prior comment that Credit Card Travel insurance is absolutely brilliant and i believe better than the insurances you pay for.

  • How long does it normally take for the points to be awarded? Could prob hit the $3k in the hurst week with some travel and bills coming up

    • As soon as you reach minimum spend points will hit. You will just need to wait for the monthly sweep of points!

  • For someone that is NOT interested in any rewards apart from the ability to sell them to someone else on a forum, is this deal better than the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black Credit Card with Bonus 75,000 Qantas Points and zero annual feel (or is there a better deal)?

My only interest in this deal is to get as many points in the first year, sell points on the forum and cancel card before the second year fee hits.

  • +1

Looking to sign up to this card as NAB are cancelling my NAB Qantas Platinum AMEX at the end of Feb.

If I use one of the referral links above for this card, do i still get the 100,000 points on offer and an additional bonus? If so, how many? Thanks!

    • You get 100k points only. The referrer will get 30k.

  • What is the advantage of using one of those random referral links in the OP?

I'm applying for the Qantas Ultimate Card so does that mean I will get 100 000 points + 65 000 points and the person who referred me will get a bonus of 30 000?

    • No, you will get 100,000 and the person who’s link you happen to click will get 30,000.

      • Someone gets 30,000 points… that's worth at least $300, right? That's a HUGE amount for a referral, innit?!!

  • I suppose if I were to cancel this card there would be no fees (after $450 paid and used) in the cancellation and I would be able to apply 12 months later?

    • It's 18 months' waiting time now I believe.

  • Is it possible to pay a friend 3K via Paypal using the card in order to qualify for the 100K Qantas. Obviously this would attract 2.5 % Paypal fees but seems like a no brainer in order to get 100K points.

  • Do you need to sign up to the Qantas Frequent Flier program to redeem the 100 000 points?
