Great price for a great, local phone.

    • +1

yes, I got it for $350 a few months ago and it's a great phone for the prize.

      • +2

Does this have a notification led?

      • +11

Prizes are usually free. Just saying.

        • +1

It was expensive raffle ticket… But totally worth it.

        • I blame the swift keyboard

        • +1

@Torvalds: Haha not so swift after all eh?

        • +3

Not sure why my comment above was marked as off topic, you really couldn't get more on topic than asking a question about the features of the phone.

All I asked was if it has a notification led?

        • @WatchNerd:

Repeating the same thing again and again causes it to lose its novelty.

Ask about the every now and then, not Everytime.

        • +2

          @homersimpson:

It's still bang on topic though, other members ask about Band 28 & NFC all the time.

        • +1

          @WatchNerd:
Doesn't make them less of a tool.

  • +1

Just ignore the FBI, CIA, NSA warnings if we want cheap phones from ZTE or Huawei.

    • +9

Or use an open source ROM like LineageOS

      https://download.lineageos.org/axon7

      • +2

It won't remove any spying done at the firmware/modem level as per other Chinese devices

        • Yep, 100% security isn't possible. It's more that every measure you take to thwart it can help, including open source ROM, encryption, exploit patches, firewall, antivirus, etc.

If in doubt, don't put anything on your device that you don't want the Chinese, NSA, or <insert general baddies> accessing.

        • +1

@surethang: or you can minimize the very real and proven risk of Chinese spying on your smartphones by not buying a Chinese phone

        • @Michael15286:

For sure. Most people buy Chinese phones like Xiaomi because they can be as low as a third of the price. So it's a savings/risk trade-off.

In any case, it'd be a challenge to buy a device that doesn't contain Chinese/foreign components running microcode (microcontrollers, digital signal processors, channel controllers, memory/disk controllers, network interface controllers, network processors, GPU, and the list goes on).

And as @Dontreadthis notes below, it's really a case of choose-your-poison - Chinese, NSA, Russian (Kaspersky?), Google, Microsoft, Apple, Samsung, Amazon, …

        • +2

@surethang: unfortunately that's the way it's going right now, personal information is the game and all the big players want in.
That said I'd prefer my data in the hands of a Western government than the Chinese government.

      • +2

The article you linked literally says "capacity" to do malicious things. I don't think it's saying much. It definitely doesn't say that anything is being done or maybe they just can't prove it. I can appreciate the angle and concern, I wouldn't personally put any weight on it for my purchase

        • +2

I’m ok with governments spying on me through my cheap ass phone though I’d suggest they invest their resources elsewhere as I’m pretty boring.
If I was to buy a lotto ticket on my phone could they steal the ticket if I won?

    • +29

Not defending the Chinese, but how is it any different to the NSAs hand thats shoved up Google's behind? Why do people get so worked up about articles about the Chinese brands yet ignore what's happening in the US with brands that are far more popular here? Also the Australian government is trying to introduce legislation literally asking for backdoors to all encrypted services - without a warrant - for law enforcement: https://www.computerworld.com.au/article/633210/digital-righ…
I don't see how the Chinese are any worse, especially when they they have no jurisdiction here. The Chinese might be being sneaky - but at least they aren't lying to my face telling me it's for my security and my own good.

        • +2

so to summarise in one word, xenophobia

        • +3

None of those reasons explain why I should care anymore about the Chinese having my info than the Americans……

        • +4

First line, yeah fair point, second line, yeah I guess…last line? Nah that's racist bro.

        • -3

@Lorindor: Sadly, we live in a racist world. Do you think you are a racist by agreeing 1st/2nd line?

      • yep, if you are in china they own the carrier network so intercept whatever they like, just like NSA and FBI can do in the USA …………….
If you are worried about OS …. well google has your details which you ferly share and tracks your habits so they can "provide the best user experience"

        Or buy apple …….

Or just get on with it …. you life isn't that interesting that the Chinese government will waste time looking your stuff in Australia.

        • +1

It's not an individual they are interested in… Information gathered is a vital part of any of the above agencies workings.. Before they needed people in the field to gauge population reaction to political issues etc now they just send cheap electronics with gateway sign ups etc… It would not surprise me if Google or any of them have agreements in place with these agencies and definitely wouldn't surprise me if cheap Chinese electronics being sent all over the world is also used for these purposes… Doesn't mean u gotta care but it's a much easier way to spy lol

      • Well, I hope good ol' US of A and China got something useful outta spying on me as I sat on the bog and crapped out that ring-stinging curry I had yesterday.. Was reading Google News at the time, if that helps?

    • lists agencies currently spying on the entire world
Oh yes because we need to make sure that they're the only ones spying on us, don't want nothin to do with those pesky Chinese.
By this point unless you need to literally design the device yourself, code the firmware and operating system yourself and then find some cryptic way to connect to any external services without being tracked.

    • There is currently no evidence that China is using these devices to spy on people - not so for NSA however.

I paid $499 back in August for mine from JB and it has been the best phone I've ever had. Pretty much all the phone brands in AU outsource their repairs, but ZTE's head office in Melbourne do the repairs for their phones. This was one of the deciding factors when I picked up this one over a Motorola. Plus free repair for accidental screen damage for the first 2 years.

There still isn't much else on the market I'd rather buy, especially at this price point.

    • +4

Plus free repair for accidental screen damage for the first 2 years.

Add this to the description, OP.

      • +4

        Ok done.

    • I bought one as a spare incase my LG V20 dies, but I'm seriously thinking use the ZTE as my primary phone as it has OLED display.

    • Me too! Paid 500 at JB and I love it. Best phone ever. And the display is absolutely beautiful. Cannot ask for anything better! So extremely happy with everything about it.

      • August 2017… $500 ?
Not sure if it was the best deal because the LG G6 could be had for around $460 back in June 2017.

LG has better ergonomics, waterproofing, and cameras.
The ZTE has a better metal body, speakers, screen.
They're both equal when it comes to performance and battery life.

Would've been awesome if they combined the two in early 2016 to make for a good value/flagship upgrade from the Samsung NOTE 4/Snapdragon 800-era. Since all Android phones in 2015 were mostly bad, only the Galaxy S6 is "okay" by today's standards… I call it the year Apple won.

  • I have a galaxy s6. How would this compare? Would it be an upgrade?

    • Not an upgrade.

      • Not an upgrade.

    • +1

      Side-by-side comparison of features

      https://www.kimovil.com/en/compare/samsung-galaxy-s6-edge-32…

ZTE has slightly bigger screen, faster CPU, bigger battery, SD card slot, dual SIM, but camera rates slightly worse…

    • I was thinking to buy S6, but it only has 32 gb and no sd card. I am concern that the space will run out very quickly. How long you have the phone for? How is the free space looking now?

  • Looks decent, but only Android 6.0?

    • you can upgrade to 7. Supports Google Daydream as well.

      • +8

        8.01 Oreo in April confirmed.

      • I have the ZTE axon 7.How do I upgrade?

        • +1

you need to download the update and copy to the sdcard. Then simply run the system update from the settings. Instructions here:
          http://www.ztemobiles.com.au/feature_AXON7.htm
(read the section at the bottom under Android Nougat 7.1.1)

          I love Googling.

        • @Torvalds: thank you! I currently have 2 sim cards in there damn will wait til one expires lol

  • Shame its not available with afterpay lol.

  • -1

These surely have to be nff returns or something? They cleared these out of stock everywhere last month I thought

    • +6

      They're sealed and new

      • if you have it, just confirmed over the phone with HQ OOS nationwide

  • -6

i have s8 plus, will this perform better?

  • Been waiting for a good local phone in this price range to upgrade my s5, this is perfect. Grabbed one. Thanks OP!

  • Just placed an order but the 2 hr click and collect did not work. the store did not have any stock new collection date is 20th now DAMN

      • Savage.

      • +8

The bitch probably is a call center worker, not a content manager. Could even be your sister too.

        • -8

looks like it was you over the phone:)

        • +2

          @d-hunterz:
Did you do a video call?

      • +3

        R U OK?

  • Is it me or does it say "unavailable online"?

  • Ordered! Thanks OP.

  • great phone, had mine since last year, running dark rom and a custom kernel. terrific phone with plenty of mod support

  • Is it dual sim 4g+3g?

  • Just checked office works ebay site and discovered all stock has been removed due to a site wide ebay sale. Wtf.

  • Wondering how good the camera is at low light…anyone has this phone and can share?

    • +1

I had this phone , great in every area but the camera , need to be outdoors in daylight for passable pics

      • Thanks mate. good to know.

    • Amazing camera in full sunshine, not so good in dark lighting

  • Does the second sim slot share with microsd and is it 3g?

    • +1

Yes shared with Micro SD, either one not both.

    • +2

      Spy on what?

    • +1

No one is forcing you to get it lol

    • +6

I totally agree with you. No one should buy products made by a country that regularly bullies other countries into submission using taxpayer funded military resources. So… any Swiss made phones on bargain?

      • there isn't much that isn't assembled in china including Iphones …. so a boycott of chinese stuff would leave you living in the 1980's.

even the American military is reclaiming their supply chain to US manufacturers as too many parts for their planes now come from China as their suppliers outsourced to Chinese companies.

  • Anyone know if I can use gift cards in store to order this?

  • Says unavailable online for me

    • Try again bit layer

    • Same for me, just woke up and would love to order one lol…

      • +9

This is why my grandfather always has the flashiest phone in the family. He gets up at 4am.

    • HAd to update my postal code in order for it to work , try it

  • This or Xiaomi Mi A1?

    • This, on spec wise it’s better also includes NFC

    • +2

Depends. Do you prefer stock Android over skinned Android? Is cost a deciding factor? This one has a better processor plus an AMOLED QHD display, if that's your thing. You also need to take into consideration after-sale services. Someone mentioned that ZTE have a centre in Melbourne. I'm sure Xiaomi possesses no such thing here in Australia.

      • Xiaomi phones are far more popular everywhere than ZTE. No?

Honestly, processor and NFC are surely plus (mere because I do pay with Android and Apply Pay once in a while when they have some promo offers with Amex, Woolies Rewards, etc and I have earned around $20-$30 so far) though I don't care about the slight difference in display among those two phones.

  • Unavailable for me also, updated postcode still nothing. Tried calling my local store, no stock. Hopefully it comes through.

EDIT: Comes up if I select stores in other states but not NT.

    • Was that stuart park? Was thinking about calling but wasnt feeling that hopeful.

  • You all seem to really know your stuff, I watch the deals daily and I am getting so confused! I have had my note 4 for years, want to upgrade without spending $800+ . I was going to buy he axon in January, then the one plus but then have been waiting for the xiaomi pro.
Please advise which phone will be a good replacement. Cheers 👍

    • What's the issue with note 4 that you are looking for an upgrade.

      • Samsung is reason enough.

      • +1

I have gn4 too. Battery is pathetic, I've even replaced it too albeit with a cheapo one from ebay.
It does the occasional random reboot.

        And a lot of laggggg.
