I tried the sweet egg custard buns… although not as nice as fresh from the steamer at the yum cha restaurant, but these are pretty good at home.

    • is it the 'salted egg' style or just the sweet custard one?

      • +4

        its the salty egg type..

but its more sweet than salty 流沙包

        • Might give it a go for $2.50, thanks! :)

        • @kza2610: you are right. $2.50. can't even make your own cream bun.

        • @eatwell365:
save yourself 2.5$ because they are the worst egg custard buns I've tasted, it too sickly sweet.

To me it feel more like the recipe from the egg custard tart toss into the steam bun roll. it doesn't work because the pastry from the tart helps the over sweetness of the custard tart mix. without it too much sweet on its own.

        • @godofpizza: oh ok then, might give it a miss and save my waistline then, thank you :)

Siu Mai bites go really well with Special Burger Sauce.

I thought Siu Mai one tasted horrible, and lacked seasoning. I steamed one bag, and second one went to trash.
BBQ pork buns are nice. I like they have made them smaller with much better meat and bun ratio.

      • +1

I think they're much better than the pork buns.

      • It depends on the consumer.

  • Are they any good or just full of flour and very little else?

    • They are good, although they shrank in the last 6 months from 4/pack to 6-7/pack. The BBQ Pork ones are a good ratio of meat to bun, even as the small version.

These go on sale every couple of weeks I reckon.
    So good.

  • So how do you cook these suckers?

    • Steam

I think best to steam them, probably taste the best. I usually can't wait so microwave them for 2min or less depending on strength of microwave.

    • Deep fry.

Love the pork and chive dumplings. On offer quite often so not long to wait if you miss out this time.

Pro tip: The pack is supposed to be 10 pieces but I have found that this varies wildly. I've had as many as 25 in a pack before, so check for the heaviest one when in store.

  • Just bought a packet of each, all very good. Each packet probably makes one decent meal for a person, so $2.50 is good, $5.50 is a bit steep.

The pork and chive dumplings are so good. But they go on sale literally every 2 weeks.

My tip is that you steam the pork and chive dumplings in just normal water with a little dash of balsamic vinegar (not too much!) for about 10-12 mins, and then when cooked eat it with soy sauce ^-^

    • Can you cook it in the microwave or oven.. don't have a steamer and am the worst cook in Australia.

      • if you wanna steam in the microwave, generally i just stick a centimeter of water (hot if you can) into the bottom of the dumplings in a container you can steam in (tupperware or something that can be used in microwave safely, and make sure the lid isnt FULLY sealed on) and cook it letting the water steam the dumplings. never tried it with dumplings myself, although this method works with vegetables and whatever, i guess the risk is you might cook the dumplings before the water steams them properly, so perhaps test it out :)

        • Hmm it's worth a shot I suppose but yeah I think the microwave might cook the dumplings before the steam does in there.

        • @AlienC: Just try it straight microwave without the steam. Sure, it won't be as nice as steamed, but might still be OK. Less hassles having to deal with the water.

Edit: Just saw comment, others already doing this.

  • I don't mind this bun.

    Time to buy more

  • can confirm they don't taste like the dim sum in hong kong

  • Yum
