  • Okay can someone assist me, I'm already with Telstra paying extortionate rate for my plan which has now expired, so I'm going to keep the phone and look for a sim only plan.
Given I'm already with Telstra, how do I go about porting my number to another company and then heading to JB and porting back to Telstra, is this possible? And to keep the same number?

    • I ported to Amaysim and ported back. Talk to the store rep and be nice, pretty sure they will be happy to help.

      • I ported to Optus today and just went in this evening and the number is still showing in Telstras system.. I was also told that the number has to have been active with the other provider for over 30 days (dont know how they can tell that) otherwise they wont give you the gift card… Going to try a different store tomorrow and try my luck there

    • Can’t you do what a few people have done in here is switch your number from Telstra plan to Telstra prepaid then buy the plan.

      • +3

No, you can’t “port to Telstra” from Telstra. What JB does is to check if your number exists in Telstra database. If you do you are not eligible. Boost/Lyca Mobile are both considered as Telstra customer by the way.

        • Aldi must be different because they allowed me to move across one of these plans today’s.

    • +2

I've done it before by porting to a $2 vodafone sim for a day and then signing up to telstra as new customer

      • Yeah I just ported out to Voda today, will do this tomorrow and port back in. Sick of pre-pay povo data plans.

        • Let us know how u go! I want to do this too.

        • +2

@dw070: JB Hifi Staff Super Super Super helpful, at one point two of them were on the phone trying to get me out of the Telstra system. Looks like I just have to wait for the Telstra end to be aware that I ported out. Turns out I am still listed in the Telstra DB as a customer (but my sim is an active voda sim right now).

Will call Disconnects and see if there is anything they can do to hurry this along. Otherwise I will just return on Sunday and hope the system has caught up.

        • +1

@dw070: Two days later port succesful… Now Im waiting for Telstra to activate my SIM, its been two hours >.<

        • @Sanvy: thanks for the replies. Success?

        • +1

@dw070: Yup Success. Dont port out on a Sunday voda port services are down then.

    • +9

I'll copy and paste what I did from the other thread, and I'm sure what others have done:

I did exactly this on the last $200 deal. Went to Vodafone, ported onto a $2 sim. Waited 10-15mins for the number to be active, then walked into JB and ported back. Cheaper contract, more gb and $200 gift card. Winning all round!
Took all of about 30 mins to do

    • I called telstra retention line 1800 008 843, complained to them and said i wanted to leave telstra

They put me on the $59, 15gigs telstra plan and gave me a $5 credit/month so it's $54 for 15gigs. Not as good as this deal but it's something for existing telstra customers

      • +1

I used the on line chat and got the $59 plan for $44 and 17gb per month.

        • +1

i used the online chat as per your response Rosebee and complained abit because telstra retention was no help (it was a white chick zzz… the Filipino lady, they are usually much nicer)

Telstra ended up giving me an extra $5 discount a month so now i'm $49 for 15gigs so cant complain haha…

Would be better if they gave you a Nintendo Switch

Would be better if they gave you a beachfront property in Sydney

        Avatar checks out

      • +10

Would be better if they just stuck the $200 gift card up their a$$ and took $200 off the bill making it $388 or $32.33 a month. JB overpriced so got nothing to spend the gift card on.

        • +5

          Username checks out.

        • Can you pay bills with JB at the Telco desk? If so, couldn't you put the account $200 into credit?

      • +5

I think he was making a reference to the "Make the Switch" catch phrase.

      • +1

Not with rising sea levels. ;)

      • No thanks

  • Anyone know what the upgrade options are for go mobile byo? Can I ever upgrade to a plan on friends/family etc or other good deal plan with a handset?

    • Can't upgrade to Friends & Family offer anymore. It's only a port in option now.

      • You can port in and immediately change to another plan. I did this recently.

        • +1

You might not be able to answer this, but do you think you could port over with this deal and then sign up to the Telstra Samsung S9 pre-order plan where you get a TabA and wireless charger for free?

        • @benjiballs: This you can. The condition of the Friends & Family have been changed as of yesterday. But all other plans do not have this condition. So yes you can get this JB offer and then apply for the S9 Pre-order.

    • +1

      Did this last year:

Port from Virgin to BYO plan at JB. - $200 gift card

A week later, "upgraded" to F&F Offer with Pixel 2. - $100 gift card

  • Glad to see it back again, gonna wait out to see if they run another deal like the end of last year for S9 in the future.. optimistic but really hoping it happens.

  • Hi,
Does it includes international calls as well (sorry if its answered already)

    • No

    • +1

Your Monthly Calls and Monthly Data can’t be used overseas.
Your Monthly Calls do not include calls, SMS or MMS to international numbers (except where your Plan includes an International Call and SMS allowance), premium numbers (eg 19xx numbers) and some satellite numbers, 1234, 12 455 and 12 456 numbers or content charges.

    • If you want international calls, look into Optus's double data plants at the moment

  • +1

    Awesome Deal OP!!!

  • +1

I wonder how much telstra is paying JB hifi for each person they sign up for this deal?

    • +1

I'd suggest somewhere in the vein of $300. That would be a net $100 margin for JB per user and long term margin for Telstra! Win Win for everyone, even consumers for once!

    • -1

They pay jb by the millions for them to hit their sales targets every month, use to work there. The flack you'd cop if your store couldn't make the target..

      • Can vouch for this. Never worked in the telco dept, but I always felt sorry for them as they were always the most depressed and stressed out of the rest of the sales staff

  • I signed up yesterday with the deal that only included 20gb and $150 gift card. They haven’t contacted me yet to confirm - any idea whether I can cancel the previous sign up?

    • +1

Look for a cooling-off period clause in the contract that you signed.

    • +1

I believe cooling-off only applies if you were approached, but there are grounds to break contract (no termination costs) if the service isn't up to par. But you should try call JB Hifi and see if they can do anything about it, at least bump GC to $200 as that is at their discretion.

  • sounds awesome, but is there any similar Telstra deals with less data? 25Gb is too much for me…

    • +46

Sure is, go to the Telstra site and sign up to the $49 plan and you'll get 10GB.
If that's still too much data, you can go on the $49 BYO month to month which gets 2GB.

      • +2

hahaha thank you the wise one… :)

  • +2

TIP: If you are on Boost - you need to port out to Vodafone, leave it for a while and hope you get a nice rep at JB. I did this and the rep saw my old boost number in the system - I had to deny it and somehow he did the deal for me

  • My contract ends 8/3, do you think the offer will still be around in about 1 weeks time?

    • +6

Magic eightball says “outlook not so good”

    • buy a $2 voda sim, then port in

    • +5

Check contract break fee with your provider. Most contracts are pro-rated. Means the fee to break contract decreases with amount of time you have stayed with them. In your case it’d amount to few dollars.

    • +2

Anecdotally should be good to recontract/terminate within 30 days. Penalty is prorata cost anyway so about a week's worth

  • +1

Wonder if you can get another 5GB through telstra livechat as detailed in the 'Thanks' bonus giving you 30GB/month total.

    • -1

telstra won't give you JB gift card. I checked before

    • I think you’d be pushing your luck - they didn’t give it to me and I’m already a customer.

      • +6

I got my loyalty bonus after being with them for 2 days. You should spin-up the live chat roulette again

        • The odds actually get better the more you spin too

    • The information I got from chat is that you require more than one Telstra service on your account.

So if you fire up a $2 sim, you could maybe get it?

I was told no to my single product account.

  • Great deal. Currently on Optus and out of contract as today, not looking at getting a new handset as yet. Only question (if anyone would know the answer here…) I get a bundle deal discount with Optus for my home internet, if I remove my mobile from this plan, will I lose my bundle discount?

    • optus live chat might help you lol

      • Yeah, I just spent the past 15 minutes speaking to "Richy" and "Patrick", got passed around to 3 different departments and then closed the chat without an answer. Thanks though.

        • Only 15mins? I'm usually on there at least an hour, being transferred around and end the chat without an answer.

    • Yes, you will lose it

      • Felt I would, thanks.

  • Would this work if you were belong (which is owned by Telstra)?

    • It worked for me. I did it last night and no issues doing it from Belong. In fact, they didn't even care that I had Telstra home internet too.

  • +1

Nooooooo! I used the recent $150 gift card deal to port mine and my wife's phone to Telstra. That's a whole $100 more I could have gotten…

  • not even half way through my terrible kogan 365 plan :(
wait for my plan to finish or just write it off and get this?

    • whats terrible about it?

      • reception. i was on optus and there is a blindspot on the daily train rides around Turrella/Bardwell Park (in Sydney) where I lost a bit of signal. Kogan is completely no signal and just choppy throughout the rest of the ride. Assuming Telstra will be better than both of these - maybe even no blind spots?

        • It's Vodafone. It's poor…. Optus/amaysim gave me 1 extra bar everywhere that wasn't cbd. Telstra is supposed to be da bomb though.

        • Thank you. I'm with Kogan and live in Arncliffe. Reception has always been choppy.

        • +1

@love2buy: happy to report changed to Telstra, no more blind spot. Signal all through the train rides. Life changed!

  • +1

wish I could do this and exchange the gift card for $200 cash.

    • +3

You wouldn't have too much trouble getting $180 for it. Maybe more if you're lucky.

  • From memory Aldi / Woolworths 'Telstra Wholesale' operators could get this deal. Do we think it's the same this time around?

Also, I've really enjoyed pre-paid to avoid bill shock. Is Telstra good as far as warning you when you're about to hit your data limit for the month? e.g. Woolies sends alerts but they're confusing 'You have used up your campagin data, you are now using your regular data' (which makes zero sense to me…).

    • +1

Yes I can confirm as I ported over from them

    • Yeah, Telstra are actually really good at sending you alert SMSs for days use, and their 24x7 app updates your data usage really frequently - unlike Optus, which could’ve been delayed 24 hours, Telstra seems almost instantaneous.

      • Optus is intantaneous now. Shows time stamp too

  • +3

Will the $10 monthly credit continue after the 12 month contract or will it go up to $59/mth at end of contract?

    • Even if it did - you can always negotiate with Telstra to get a better rate at the end of 12mths.. It wouldn't be hard to get the $10/mth discount continued.

  • Hrmmmm this is very tempting I currently have 10gb with Optus and am constantly going over

    • -1

Read the contract, I don't like this $10 credit stuff. Don't trust dodgy stuff like that.

      • +1

Hi there - the original plan is $59. If you port in from a competitor, Telstra will give you a $10 credit on a monthly basis to reduce the cost to $49 for the 12 months.

        Nothing dodgy about this.

Source: Telstra employee (not official spokesperson)

        • +1

Will it go back up to 59 after 12 months or until recontract?

        • Thank-you for this clarification.
I just want to ask why it is necessary to provide a credit ?

The only way to be eligible for the deal is to port a number from a different provider ?
          thanks in advance

        • +1

@ozchobie: yes should go back to $59 after contract.

        • +1

@ddp3: By which stage you can either re-contract with this, a better telstra plan if it exists, or port to someone else. I got on with the deal when it was 20gb for $59 (-$10) after being sick of Optus' repeated hang up marketing calls every few months. Increased to 25gb per month this week with the 5 gb bonus data. Customer service is not perfect, but it is a damn site better than Optus. I have 0 regrets churning to Telstra

        • +1

@PAOK11: I believe it's because of how the Telstra payment system works, it's easier than reducing the overall price.

  • Is Telstra service better than Belong, Aldi, or Woolies?
I have so many rollover data, but very tempted by 25gb a month.

    • +1

Telstra direct is definitely better, although only you can judge whether the incremental cost is worth it

      • Thanks sprouts, I'll think about it then

        • Belong is Telstra's own "cheaper" brand mobile so you're getting full retail coverage and pretty much the same service.

        • @ruscook:

I'm pretty sure Belong has Telstra Wholesale coverage, not retail. I've just had a look at both Telstra retail and Boost's coverage maps, and there is quite a bit of difference, particularly when you get into more regional areas.

    • If you are not going regional/rural places….Aldi will suffice no contracts month to month similar quality

    • +1

I have 249 gb on Belong so I'm very tempted but don't think I can give that up, especially at $20 extra per month
