Did this route from Sydney VIA KL to Osaka last year. Never again. Total travel time is massive. Landed in KL at some ungodly early hour when none of the shops or restaurants in the terminal were open. Arrived in Osaka exhausted.

There are fully inclusive Qantas fares at the moment that are direct and only about $150 more. Much better deal.

    Lots of issues here.

    Sydney-Tokyo

    • 11 hour layover in Kuala Lumpur. Good if you want to look around KL, bad if you are going to stay in the airport.
    • It's $487 if you book direct with Air Asia vs. 3rd party resellers (e.g. Trip.com $511).
    • It's an extra $120.50 each way for 1 bag, meal + seat selection.

That adds up to $728 return.

You could fly Qantas for $580 or Singapore for $658. The Flight Scout page shows its cheaper on China Southern and Malaysia too and those all include bags, meals and seats.

Also on Singapore, you can get a $1 stopover including hotel & attractions.

    EDIT:

Same story with Melb-Osaka. 15 hour layover! Cheaper to go with Vietnam Air.

    • Got the lead routes the wrong way around, have updated.

Airasia are rarely worth it any more. The layovers at KL are just a sad joke to save what, $50 over any other airline?
Even Jetstar which is only middle-budget and not extreme-budget has DIRECT flights to plenty of places and very similar sale prices. I'm not going to waste half a day and be forced to try sleeping in some airport for 8 hours / eating $15 sandwiches to 'save' a pittance.

Add to that the fact Airasia is switching to Avalon airport for 'Melbourne' flights soon - they've completely lost the plot. Unless the flights were $300 return due to this silly attempt at cost saving, no chance I'll bother with them again.

    • Agreed, plus has anyone been to their KL terminal? never again

      • i dont mind the KL terminal. some good places to sleep for free there

      • Nothing wrong with KLIA2; except the walking.

      • New terminal KLAI2 opened May, 2014.

AirAsia X is IOSA certified and generally considered safe, unlike the other AirAsia subsidiaries.

    • Be aware that some shops in Australia are owned and operated by Malaysians. Please do your own research before heading to these shops. Your comment is a joke by the way.
      From, another Malaysian
