LightInTheBox (LITB) are having a one day special on Sonoff Wireless Remote Control Socket Smart Timer

Here is a link to the previous deal

Some notes I gathered from previous deals:
* These are smart power sockets which you can link direct to Google Home or Amazon Alexa without needing extra bridges/hubs/hardware like the Xiaomi range.
* These are rated up to 2000W (instead of Aus standard 2400W), so high power appliances like heaters/AC will not work with these.
* Native Google Home, Alexa and IFTTT integration and can be flashed to support MQTT
* These are technically Chinese sockets which are upside down compared to ours - keep in mind when deciding where to use it
* They have not been tested for Australian safety specs. That said, teardowns and user reports state decent build quality.

  • Pretty decent device. Just for shits n gigs I tested out a 2400W heater in this plug and while it still works as far as the app shows and the physical button shows, it now doesn't pass power through to ANY device. So don't go above the 2000W rating or else it seems to just fry it. I did open it up and check for a burnt out fuse after this but nothing obvious pops out.

    • while it still works as far as the app shows and the physical button shows, it now doesn't pass power through to ANY device

      So.. it doesn't work really?

Sounds logical (or quite probable to say the least) in a situation you overload a cheap device by 20%.

      • +1

Well it still connects to WiFi and will accept remote input (and local) but doesn't output anything. Not saying I didn't expect it but I was kinda surprised there wasn't any pops, smoke or anything else.

  • These things are awesome - works every time with the Google Home (and the physical switch gets some use too).

  • I wish they added power consumption figures to these. Then I could get rid of the unreliable efergy ego plugs I have now.

    • +1

Broadlink has one, though I don't think they have anything AU pin compatible. Pretty sure this is a rebranded AU version. Little bit cheaper is the TP-Link HS110. Pricey either way…

      • Thanks, will check that out. Strange notice on that page though "IMPORTANT NOTICE: From 28th of April 2016 onwards, this product can no longer be sold to New South Wales customers."

I've been through the belkin wemo, the efergy ego and just got a tp link plug yesterday. They all seem to have network/misc issues or outright failure in the case of the efergy ego plugs. I wish someone made a smart plug that just worked.

        • Whats wrong with your TP Link plug? I bought a few of the sonoff but found out I shouldnt use that on my coffee machine as it's only good for 2000W. Now looking to get the TP Link version..

        • @cray: I'm having some sluggish response times and the occasional timeout when navigating the app itself. But I think that might be down to my unconventional 4g modem/router situation and not the smart plug itself. Hopefully tp link can help me sort it out.

The plug, setup and app itself appears to be great otherwise. I do however miss the historical power usage graph that the efergy ego has.

        • @michaelj08: are you using with Google Home or just the app? Hoping to use with the Google home..

Now just waiting for a deal..

        • +1

@cray: Just the included Kasa app for now. Haven't had a chance to play around with Google Home yet.

        • +1

@cray: Just in case you happen to have the same issue I had…. Switching to Google's public DNS made the app much more responsive for me.

        • +1

          @michaelj08:

          Found this

Seems NSW now requires these things to be double pole switched, but this one must not be.

Got the TP-Link plugs from Wireless 1. They're sweet, bit pricey compared to this deal but willing to pay more for Aus certified.

You are taking a chance with these uncertified devices 240v is not to be taken lightly and can quickly turn a risky unknown Chinese product into a house fire. If the firies find that one of these started a fire, no insurance.
EDIT: Noticed OP mentioned internals look OK but rating are under Australian standards.
BTW not trying to be negative OP, just want to put a hand up for safety.

    • +2

The way people talk about these devices you'd think there'd be no houses left in China with all the house fires.

      • China builds nearly all its housing with concrete or masonry.

        • So? It's the fixtures and contents that burn. If they burn for long enough a concrete building loses its structural integrity

        • @justtoreply: Cheap Chinese electrics melts steel beams.

        • @twocsies

China builds nearly all its housing with concrete or masonry.

chinese likes cremations, australia likes bonfires

      • +2

I have opened a few Chinese non-certified 240v plugs and seen soldering and designs that are disasters waiting to happen. Looks like they were put together by kids sometimes. Who knows, perhaps they were. I have also seen absolute top notch design too. Case by case. House fires happen and dodgy electronics are a prime cause.
Each to their own but we have safety standards for a reason

      • Well reports of individual house fires in China are pretty unlikely to make the mainstream media here.

Let's be honest, they're even less likely to make the mainstream media over there.

  • How do these compare to the Xiaomi plugs e.g. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/369119? (aside from the Xiaomi plugs needing the third pin to unlatch the safety mechanism)

    • Xiaomi plug doesn’t work with GH yet

  • The only thing that stopped me from buying these is the worry that my on/off switch of my current power point socket will be touching this device, if it sits flush.
    Kinda won't work then.

    any thoughts?

    • +1

Yes that is a problem, same with most of the other Chinese devices. Also if you put them on a powerboard it usually stops you from using the ports on either side.

Easiest solution is using a double adapter or a travel adapter.

  • +1

I make no apologies for the downvote. I'll keep doing it every time you guys post this shit.

These likely have an under-rated TRIAC in them. First response is from someone who cooked his after putting a couple kilowatts through it. This is cheap shit from the land of no regard for human life. Even a negligible fire risk on failure is a huge risk.

    Don't buy this.

    • Do you suggest an alternative?

      • +5

Nope. Just not this, or anything else not compliant with Australian Standards.

Kinda like you asking me for an alternative to kicking a dog. No, just don't do it?

        • They are usually relays as they are not dimmers. The Xiaomi smart socket definitely is.

    • +2

      Yeah don't risk it.

$ saved or your life? Easy choice

    • I have several of these units, and they use a relay, not a TRIAC.

The also claim CE/RoHS/FCC certifications (see https://www.itead.cc/wiki/S20_Smart_Socket#Downloads)

I should point out that I don't actually recommend these units because they are big and ungainly at the socket end.

  • Can you put timers on these? Say with an app?

    • +1

Yes I have three of them and you can set schedules and timers I’m pretty sure in the ewelink app

      • Thank you. Got two :)

      • Yes can set up timers through app. I have a few.

  • Great units. So much better than Belkin rubbish

    • well considering the Belkin we mo are one of biggest sellers in the US, I find that hard to believe, but Belkin has pulled out of the Australian market.

      • The Belkins are really let down by there app. Hardware wise they seem pretty good and work well in home assistant.

      • Just last week picked up 3 wemo's from my local bunnings for $30ea. Clearing out old stock.

      • Had two wemo units. Every time the unit did an update it would crash. Sent back to Belkin and replaced with the same issues. Also a pain to connect compared to the sonoff.
If Belkin are sooo good, someone please buy mine😃

        • I'll take you up on that offer! Send me a pm

  • Showing $13.25, am I doing anything wrong

    • Change currency to US and pay with a fee free CC. LITBs exchange rate isn't the best.

      • Thanx..
        I was too slow.. :(

  • Now showing as USD14.99. Expired?

  • Comes up as US$14.99
