    due to the store closing.

What’s going to open in its place?

    • +1

Not too sure JV. Staff member said they were due to close in July so there may be further markdowns to come

      • I hope it’s not another discount variety store.

        • -6

Who cares? It's such a dive anyway. With new Eastland, new The Glen and upcoming new Knox all 0retty closeby, forest hill is pretty unnecessary.

        • +11

Unnecessary? Lol It's not like the shopping centres are owned and located by one company.
Shopping centres used to be a lot more diverse. Now there are fewer successful retailing chains, companies are risk averse and so it's pretty much the same stores at every large shopping centre. More retailers/stores equal more jobs, more competition, more stock (for bargains) and less shopping congestion for customers.

        • -5

@Putnum: Couldn’t agree with you more. Forest Hill has been a dive and totally irrevealant for so many years.

        • @Puff Braddy: I went there as a kid in the 90s and thought it was cool because it was different to the other shopping centres in its design

Then when I worked there in 2011/12 I realised how awful the place was compared to other centres nearby. Haven't been back once since I stopped working there.

I'd sooner go to Brandon Park or Waverley Gardens.

If you need the top floor and park up the top just for those shops then you could probably have a half decent time.. but that's all it has going for it.

        • +6

@Putnum: the glass lift that went down into the water fountain blew my mind as a kid

        • @DiscoJango:
It had the same affect on me too as a kid. Really was a unique shopping centre back in those days https://scontent.fsyd4-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/428024_10150…

        • @melbourne guy: omg the guy with the white piano! memories. a good example of what happens if you cant get with the times. like managers who cant change, they ultimately fail in life, which is what forest hill is doing. kinda sad. once i finished high school and got my own drivers license, i actually never went back there. there is so much more choice that i didnt have to.

        • +1

@Putnum: Yeah I grew up in the area and have fond memories of it in the 90s. The massive Pancake Parlour with the plane suspended in the air on the 3rd level, Galaxy World etc. It was a unique shopping centre. Now it’s rubbish, and has been for so long. I now only rarely go there for JB as I know they will always have stock of what I’m after due to being in such an abysmally quiet shopping centre.

        • @Puff Braddy: gotta assume the downvoters above are not locals.

        • +3

@Putnum: I live locally, born and bred locally in fact, and would choose to go to Forest Hill any day of the week over other centres close by. Aldi, Woolworths and Coles all in one centre makes it much easier to shop supermarket specials. Target & Big W are also great as a bargain shopper. Hoyts & AMF up top for school holidays with a 9 & 7 year old, a bonus. In my opinion, the size of Forest Hill is what makes it more attractive. Doncaster, Eastland & Knox have just got so many extra shops I've absolutely no interest in hence making the centres larger and busier. It's certainly a shame to see Big W leave Forest Hill but the centre has seen large retailers come and go over the years hence I think it'll just be business as usual come June 18th, the day after Big W closes their doors.

        • @carlenet: Yeah, like I said the Hoyts, JB, AMF, TGIF and Rebel (I assume those last 2 are still there) are the only thing that shopping centre has going for it.

For supermarket shopping I go to stand-alones now. They're much easier and you're not fighting for parking spots with pensioners having coffees and taking shits. It's a rare day when you see me in a Coles/Woolies too.

We might have some mutual friends =) I grew up in Mt Waverley from 1985 onwards.

        • @Putnum: JB & Rebel are now a level lower since the refurbishment.

I agree somewhat re stand-alones. Brentford Square is a good Woolies rush in. Stand alone Aldi's are also very easy to access. I do find Forest Hill very easy to rush in and out of if you know where to park. ;)

We just might; had a close friend that resided in Mt Waverley, went to Siena together. I grew up in Vermont.

    • Something profitable

      • Amazon is coming to Forest Hill?

        • +1

          He said "Profitable".

        • @BargainKen: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-amazon-com-results/amazon…

“(Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc on Thursday reported a profit near $2 billion, the largest in its history…”

        • +1

          @pba: and it’s aussie version?

        • @wxyz234: Too many digits behind the (-) to show lol. Amazon AU operates seperate to Amazon US, as do all the other Amazon branches like hosting. They internally pay each other to use each other's services

        • @plague69: I think the comment made by pba referred to the Aussie arm.

When you scan at the register, it doesn't take off the 20% until you click pay.

All console and controllers are transferred to other stores.

    • Wow, really? Thanks. Saved me a trip.

    • Thanks for info.

    • +3

      What about games?

      • Doubt it, these will be transferred to other stores for sure

      • There were PS4 and XB1 games there on Thursday at 20% off. Also DVDs, Blu Rays and CDs. Also Nintendo games too.

      • Can confirm games are 20% off. Bought some Nintendo Switch games

        • How many games were there? Any choice titles?

        • +1

@Quotationz: Big W's Catalogue of switch games isn't that great. They had about 3-7 copies of games like Rayman, Mario Odysee, and splatoon 2.

A couple each of Skyrim, Xenoblade, la noire, fire emblem warriors, and maybe dragon builders.

No doom or any of the smaller indie type games.

Mind you this was at about 11:30 - 12:30

        • @koston54: thanks for that might try for Skyrim or Rayman cheers

  • Nope was there yesterday and discount already applied, I forgot to post this when I got home!

I didn't find heaps of bargains though.

    • Thanks for clarifying Craze. I just picked up some household essentials

  • +7

Everything they can sell - gaming, lego, etc - would have been transferred to other stores already.

Source: unpacked a few pallets of sellable stock after a store closed about 4 hours away, when I still worked at big w

    • what sort of stuff is deemed not sellable ?

      • +2

"Sellable" probably wasnt the right term to use.

Its more like "stuff we can sell without discounting"

From memory, the store managers went down and "shopped" what they wanted/thought they could sell and everything else stayed

        • so pretty much just clothes, dvds, books and plates left in the shop? anyone know if any smallish tvs worth picking up?

        • +1

@juki: If you just want a smallish TV the Kogan ones are alright

  • It's closing?! :(

    • +6

Wow that's bad… I hope big w turn things around like kmart did.

We don't want another Masters vs Bunnings situation where Bunnings pretty much runs the show now

      • +1

Apart from all the jobs lost. People won't understand till it's too late. I'm sure all shopping centre owners with Big W, Myer and/or Target are concerned and hoping for improvements.

      • +1

WW are dumbasses, all they needed to do was copy Bunnings. FFS it's not like the market was saturated with competition. Honestly I wonder who is making the decisions at these big companies.

    • -1

      Store wide… While stocks last

There's always exclusions.. Eg eBay 5-20% off sale

  • it feels like it was only a few years ago I went to the opening of this store…

  • -2

Thanks OP, followed Broden and bought a few small LEGO sets, forgot to check if they had NINTENDO SWITCH…

  • Do you remember when Harris Scarfe at Forest Hill closed down in 2007? There was a fantastic closing down sale that went for weeks with bargains like all their business shirts at $10 each, and you had to queue up for an hour or so around closing times on the weekend to make your purchases because it was so busy.

    • and then it came back to replace Myer in 2012!

      • These big box retailers tend to sign 20-30 year leases, and the problem for some landlords now is exactly the case here. Bigger and better shopping centres have opened, and in the 20-30 years the centre is no longer booming and in many cases have become loss making stores for the tenant. Great time to run.

You going to see something similar but probably on a larger scale in the next 5 years, with something like 30% of Myers long leases expiring in the next 5 years. They will close a large chunk of these with the company currently down the toilet.

      • The magic of foresight.

  • Let me guess. Another bloody Kmart going in.

    • Don't think a Kmart would fit in that spot and the one that used to be in the shopping centre was swapped to a Target some years ago (in the days when Target was excelling and Kmart was struggling).

Burwood 24hr Kmart is just down the road at Burwood One (with the car park from hell).

A TK Maxx could fit in well there or convert to smaller retail space for Smiggle and the like. Time will tell.

      • +3

The underground car park at Burwood One is good, the open air is horrendous.

    • I overheard a Big W employee say that Target and Big W are going (Big W lease is up, not sure about Target). And Kmart is coming back. Not sure where it will go though.

      • considering the big w in endeavour hills closed down recently and was replaced with Kmart.

  • The only deal would probably be the Huawei GR5 2017, 20% off is 215, and a decent price for Australian stock.

2 were left at about 8pm on 20/4.

Didn't get one myself though, in fact I left the shop empty handed.

    • Do they still have a lot of stock, place still full? Worth the trip out?

Do you get 20% off on top of the current catalogue price? 30% off Corelle Dinnersets so half price.

      • There were no Corelle there last night and the shelves were removed. I think the management removed/transferred them before the 20% off sale.

        • Full Corelle in stock today

    • +1

      How about these?

      Smart Value Bath Towel: https://www.bigw.com.au/product/smart-value-bath-towel-beige…

      • Was $6.00 now $3.00. Take a further 20% at Forest Hill and it’s $2.40. For a full size bath towel. They had plenty of stock this afternoon, I bought a couple.

      Men’s fleece

      • Cuffed track pants normally $8.00 with 20% off is $6.40
      • Hoodie normally $12.00 with 20% off is $9.60

I bought one of each of these also. There were limited sizes and colours left.

I could not find any of their own brand men’s socks or underwear that normally go for a dollar a pair in a packet of 5 or 10.

  • Wow was not expecting the Forest Hill one to shut down, but I guess the Endeavour Hills one did, so there may be more to come. I doubt a Kmart would come back to the chase, since Target replaced Kmart about 10 years ago. They may do something similar to the space as they did last year when they re-did the level 2 mall where Dimmeys used to be.

    • I overheard a Big W employee say on Thursday that Kmart is coming back to Forest Hill.

  • +1

It didn't start today, I was there on Thursday and it had already started.

Their lease is up. Target might be closing too. Kmart is coming back to Forest Hill, an employee of Big W said.

    • +1

Kmart would be a better option over big w

  • What is going on with Woolworths? That's two Big W's in the East gone in a year (Endeavour Hills)..

    • In 2016 they said they would close at least 5 Big W stores over the next three years.
      https://www.propertyobserver.com.au/forward-planning/investm…

Easier for them to cut stores not making enough money so the brand looks better to the accountants when they try to sell it off.
Easy bonus grab for management that cuts and sells off than being a true retailer that creates value and grows a business.

John Durkan, recent (now former) MD of Coles did the same thing when he came from the UK. Cuts to the business to hit easy financial goals, get big bonus then leave with exit package when you've trashed the business (Wesfarmers is selling Coles as a result).

No guesses for what happens once it's foreign owned and/or by investors looking for fast gains. Personal gain at the expense of a major job creator in Australia. Handful of people win at the expense of many thousands of Australian staff and the flow on effect for manufacturers, shopping centres and customers.

  • They have a good selection of books and their prices are very good so with 20% off it’s a great time to stock up.

  • Cheap TVs are gone. They just have Viano and Polaroid which are still overpriced even at 20%off

  • another botched shopping centre redevelopment. hopefully Forest Hill doesn't end up as crap as The Glen.

    • I also liked the Glen the way it used to be - although it's a bit early to Judge the redevelopments in The Glen - given its only half finished.

From a centre perspective the Glen is already alot busier so whilst I preferred the old one I would say the redevelopment of the Glen will be a big success.

      • you could be right, but it feels like they're trying for "mini Eastland".

        • How dumb is the new fresh food market with the fish/meat smell wafting up to the boutique shops upstairs?

What suit thought of that genius idea? Give him a raise for sure.

        • +1

          @Putnum:
Can't get over how dark and dreary the entire downstairs section is. Feels like you're a hundred meters underground with the total lack of natural light. Terrible atmosphere.

        • I think they are trying for mini doncaster

    • +4

IT's well known that Big W and Target are suffering due to their own retail/financial woes rather than blaming any perticular shopping centres that have penty of other successful retailers there.

Big W said in 2016 it would close stores with less profit and with leases expiring over the next three years (Forest Hill store's lease is expiring around June this year which was the catalyst). Other Big W's have closed for the same reason with more to follow as there leases expire.

At the redeveloped Glen, when you get past the marketing hype, the biggest changes seem to be a Aldi (only just catching up to the 3 major supermarkets at the smaller Forest Hill Chase), MYOB office moving in from down the road (huh?!) to lose valuable shoppers car parking and 500 apartments to be built to help with a bit more congestion to the area - oh and paid parking introduced.

A bunch of overpriced foodie outlets and apartments are hardly innovative retailing (esp for OzB minded folk). It may appeal to rich migrants however - which is no coincidence given the location.

      • (Excuse the grammar/typos above - Can't edit it!)

  • everyone just copies chadstone. the ones that dont, fall behind, ie: forest hill. the glen and eastland have gone through major redesigns to stay current. guess were going down the path of abandoned retail stores like america has. most of the old masters buildings i see are still vacant, overgrown with weeds looking all post apocalyptic

    • +1

Forest Hill shared the same management (Gandel) as Chadstone for quite a few years. Obviously some sites have more development potential than others and some would require a massive investment to revitalise them given their current layout (eg. Brandon Park).

Landlords with larger vacant sites would be seeking out Kaufland, Lidl and Decathalon to name a few potential fillers.

  • In addition to the 20% off a lot of items have clearance prices.

  • I ended up at big w box hill and was wondering why there was no 20% off…oh well

    • Haha 😂 lol

  • i was in their store tonight and it includes 20% off all video games [switch, ps4, xbox 1, pc, 3DS and wiiU]
i got splatoon 2 and fire emblem warriors for $118.

  • +2

Register queues this afternoon were very long. For self service registers from front to back of store. For staffed registers from front to side wall of store (See my photo https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/15300/58265/20180421_1…).

  • Are there lots of kitchenware, dinner plate sets etc on clearance in there?

    • Some

  • Hope it's not another "Masters" in the making by Woolworth group.

    • +2

I am not a Woolworths investor but bring on a Big W nationwide closing down sale although I believe Myer will beat them.

The problem with Big W and Myer management (and Australian corporates in general) is they are obsessed with virtue signalling nonsense at the expense of price, range and customer service.

No pride flag, feminist, indigenous and/or pro greenie anti bag/environmental crusade is going to deliver profits. The sooner they realize that the more time they will have running a corporation not a de facto political party

  • I predicted this store would go
