  • Great price. I paid $240 for it not too long ago (after trying to negotiate with JB).

New 6th generation Apple TV announced soon.

    • I haven’t heard even so much as a rumour. Do you have any links for me to see?

      • me either.. not sure where they're getting that info from. the 4k version was only released 8 months ago?

      • when things go on sale usually indication

    • New 6th generation Apple TV announced soon.

Not likely, this WWDC will be more software and little to no hardware.

  • How much free space is there with the OS and preinstalled apps?

    • Unlike an iPhone, you never feel like you're low on space on an Apple TV 4K IMO. Apps are alot better at only downloading what they need, and in all honesty, there aren't that many apps which you'll want anyway - most of the time it's for consuming rather than gaming/etc.

(sorry for the non specific answer, but I used to worry about that … but it's not an issue on an Apple TV at this stage).

      • I agree. I got a 64GB Apple TV. What a waste of money. 32 is more than enough.

        • +1

can you download and put movies on these?

  • Fantastic! Cheers op got the 170 ow price beat!

  • -8

Are these as pointless as they seem?

    • -1

How about some words about how good the Apple TV is and what it can be used for, rather than downvotes?

      • They do the job they are designed to do. I don't know what you want here.

Some peple find that useful, others don't

        • +1

          Thanks for the response.

I just went onto YouTube to find a review. It’s ok but not of much benefit if you have a relatively new smart tv and/or something like an Xbox One.

        • @gasman70: I tend to agree, although my ATV is still my go-to due to the nicer/smoother UI and remote for watching YouTube, Netflix and so on (on my new Sony).

  • +1

Have not turned on mine for 6 months now… hmmm..time to sell I guess?

    • I have a couple of Google Chromecasts and the Audio version one too sitting at the back of my draw.
Not really sure of the point of these devices if you have a decent tv.

      • +1

The reason why is that it is my media player. Install Infuse Pro and it's superb. My previous media player died. No TV can play the many audio and video formats from my library.

  • Had to toss up between this and the Shield but went the Shield.

    • i got the shield but thinking of getting one of these too. the plex experience on the shield has been left behind

      • +1

Do you use Shield as Plex server ? I'm currently on sheild and using it as a server with storage on a NAS. Works a treat.

Does apple TV offer the same ?

        • No, it can’t run as a server on Apple TV.

        • nah i have the server on the nas. any reason why you're not doing the same?

        • @ideasman: For the occasional transcoding requirements, when using iPad or remote connection.

        • @fifoo:
ah ok. so you got a slower nas and the shield is faster?

we got a core i5 in our nas so plenty of power

  • These are way too good, even at full price. Apple really are selling these for a steal.

    • +1

Ha ha. I reckon $179 is what it should be. It really would be a good buy, and is, at this price.

      • Telstra gave me a Roku for free, and it does pretty much everything an Apple TV does. I reckon $100 is more like what it should be.

    • what's so good about them?

      • You can play streaming services, like Netflix, Stan, etc through an old TV if you don't have a smart TV with built-in apps. If you're thinking of upgrading your TV, I'd save my money for that.

  • I reckon it’s a pricing error.
The 64GB version is $278, just a dollar off RRP.
    The 4th gen 32GB is $209. $30 more and no 4K.

  • +1

    Check for availability.

    • Yep. Maybe time to mark as expired.

  • Can someone put up a receipt please?

  • Just got to officeworks and it was already sold out. Damn.

  • Re opened the tab to get a screenshot, and its dropped off to "check for available stock" already.

Any chance someone got a screengrab when it was still in stock?

  • Awesome price! I have mine setup to stream raw 4K ripped discs (60-80 GB size) from Synology NAS and it works great! Not too mention if you have a US iTunes account where you could buy 4k movies for about US $10 when it goes on special (Got 3 Billboads, Shape of Water and The Post a few weeks ago).

  • I have the old apple tv ones x3 for several rooms not got 4k yet so would there be any point upgrading to one of these?

    • Only if you want 4K. Other than that they are the same.

  • +3

Just called the officeworks call centre and they were great. Honoured the price match. CC payment over the phone. Free postage on order over $55. Expected to arrive Tuesday! Thanks OP cracker deal! Very happy

    • Also got a price match a few minutes ago. Cheers’

      • +1

I didn't realise price matching over the phone was an option!

    Apple releases new product

    Apple product is cheap

Must be an update being released soon I’d better wait and see

    /meirl

    • /meirl?

      • The slash signals the end of a tag in HTML code. For example this text would be bold
Usage has evolved to the point where (as an example) /s is added to the end of a post to denote sarcasm.

meirl = me IRL = me in real life
An expression meaning I relate to this or this is stereotypical of me

        • +2

          seems a bit autistic

are you a redditor by any chance?

        • @joeflacco:

Hey Reddit's not just for autists, regular people can go and ask the autists questions and they're usually super knowledgeable

    • +1

Thanks for posting receipt. Just used it to price match in perth. Yeh buddy!!!

      • Where did you go? Tried Morley and no go do you have your receipt maybe I can go to the Officeworks you went to

        • Went to malaga officeworks. Dont know how to put up receipt sorry.

I just went to front counter and showed the receipt above and asked if they can do the same price and no problem.

        • @seekingabargain: Any chance i can avail the same tomorrow? or wont be possible? and if you can just upload the receipt picture anywhere and share the link

  • +1

Tried to price match in store at Officeworks and was rejected due to “Check for available stock” status…

    • +1

I got mine even though the site was showing this. Still worth people trying I think

  • Have already sold out.

  • I have a Sony android TV, do I still need this?

    • Probably not unless airplay is important

    • +3

As a true Ozbargainer, yes you need this. Don't think how much you are spending, always think how much are you saving.

  • +1

Mainly using this for infuse and apple music.. Does the job.

  • Can I use this to watch US Netflix? If so how?

    • -2

      no you cant.

      • +4

Actually the apple tv is perfect for watching US Netflix
The device itself has easy to configure settings that will allow you to set it up using your VPN's DNS etc
I have an apple tv that we exclusively use for watching Netflix (US) and Hulu as it was almost impossible to get my TV to configure the way i wanted without changing the network settings for my entire home

        • +1

Same here!! Hulu is our favourite!

    • +3

      @Tm15
Step 1: Sign up to a VPN etc (I use ExpressVPN, and never had an issue)
Step 2: Go to network settings and enter info given to you by VPN (Express VPN have an exclusive Apple TV Page)
Step 3 : Open Netflix and watch all the US content you want.

ALso, If you want to watch other US services like Hulu and Amazon (us not au) you will need to create a US based Apple account which is easy, just look up a US hotel address and use it as your "home address" Having this account will allow you to download Hulu, HBO GO etc from the US Apple App Store
HULU requires a US based CC or you can pay through Itunes, I just buy US Apple gift cards and load them on so the monthly fee comes out of my apple credit that way

      • Thanks for that info. Do I have to change my entire network to US or can I just have the Apple TV on US VPN?

        • The way I have described above only the Apple TV would be set to the us VPN.

  • As an Android mobile user, and owning an Android TV device (Mi Box), WDTV and a couple of Chromecasts, there is no reason for me to have an Apple TV, but I love it. With Infuse, it's my favourite and easiest way to play "my" local content, plus be able to watch HBO Now, Hulu and US Netflix, along with Stan and all the local Freeview apps, plus NBA, in one simple to use spot.

  • Great buy, mine was a Apple refurb for $209. Use it heaps.

  • Thought they reposted for $209. Submitted a deal. Was proud of myself. Turns out it was the normal 4. So ashamed.

Still, took a screenshot of the $179 price if anyone is game to try.

  • Is there any point having a Apple TV if you have a smart TV with all of the in built apps already?

    • Some apps on Apple TV are better, some are worse but depends on the Smart TV's apps. In any case, I suspect none would support iTunes and Apple Music, so if you've purchased or subscribed to those, an Apple TV would be the way to go.

  • Awesome, thanks OP. Managed to snag one from Officeworks as well.

  • Still think the H96 Max is superior to this atv

    https://m.geekbuying.com/item/H96-MAX-Rockchip-RK3399-Hexa-C…

    • The Apple TV has a A10 fusion chip. No contest. Infuse lightyears ahead of Android media players, too.

      • Can you install kodi on the Apple TV?

        • +1

          Yes*

Either side loaded or MrMc through the App Store.

      • +1

        A10 fusion chip

Do you even know what that means? It's a media player. It's not going to require much to drive it. Most processors these days can output 4k fine.

        • hi10p is a niche format used by Anime scene groups. It has no hardware acceleration. Though not a big'n for many, it is a deal killer for most.

Also, does the H96 have Netflix certification? If not, last I checked you were limited to SD. Though I may be outdated.

  • so bing lee said theyre sold out, is there any way to still get the atv 4k for cheap?

    • +2

It doesn't say Sold Out on the Bing Lee site, and still shows the $179 price. I just (20 minutes ago) got it price matched at OfficeWorks Lutwyche. They didn't have any in stock, but ordered it in at $170.50.

YMMV, but it's worth at shot until Bing Lee updates their website.

      • so how did you do it, did you ask for a price match then showed the bing lee web page and they approved it even though it says check stock?

        • I showed them the webpage on my phone. The price shows before the Check Availability, so I didn't scroll down that far, but even so, that is only an advisory that some stores may not have it.

          Best of luck !

      • Just chatted online with Binglee - the guy said that they were out of stock.

  • New one announced on Tuesday?

    • I thought so

    • no chance. what else can they add right now?

  • Wow thanks. I got the price match at office works just now. Had to work for it. Manager thought it was grey market, but I convinced him otherwise.Took 30 minutes, even called a bing Lee store. I think they wrongly told them they had the stock. I was ready to leave disappointed, but very happy with the outcome.

Far better product than the shield because it has auto refresh rate/resolution switching and local warranty.

  • +1

Got one today at Officeworks. No problems.

    • How and what store?

      • Just showed website. Pitt Street Syd

  • I got a no. Not in stock so won’t price match

  • Just got Fountain gate to price match. Nice and easy

    • Did they comment on no stock, or did they not look ? The written price match terms do explicitly exclude out of stocks

      • I just called them and they price matched over the phone. Then I went in and showed the website. She didn’t ask anything regarding stock

    • +1

Can you please post the invoice here. Easier for others to price match. Thanks

  • 9:45am AEST Sydney - Just bought it from JB Hi-Fi for $179. They pricematched Bing Lee

    • Can you please post a copy of the receipt? I’m heading JB now
