Optus Sport - Free Streaming Services through to August 31 (Previously $14.99) - Includes World Cup and Start of Premier League

5290

In response to the absolute clusterf*** from the Optus World Cup coverage , Optus have handed over all the group match coverage to SBS, with the hope to rectify their service in time for the remaining games.

From news.com.au:

"Optus has made a decision to leave its app and sport streaming services free and open to everyone in Australia for the remainder of the World Cup and through to August 31. The telco says Australians who have already paid for the service will receive full refunds. That move would allow Australian sport streamers to also get the opening few weeks of the 2018-19 English Premier League season free through Optus."

EDIT: Optus appears to have removed the pay wall now, happy watching.

  • Can I still watch on Optus Sports?

    My TV is broken.

    • +3

      Phone is fine

    • Go to Russia and watch super HD

  • From the footnote on the article it kinda sounds like you have to pay $14.99 to sign up and then it will be refunded at some point.

"Any customer who has purchased or does purchase an Optus Sport subscription for the World Cup will be provided a refund.“

    • Why not just make it $0 and eliminate the refund process?

      • It takes time to change the price on iTunes.

  • A++ top marks. Good move by Optus.

    • +3

      Unimportant to you maybe…

  • How can I watch the games in PC or iMac using this service?

    • -1

Your can watch through the website.

      • It is not possible. It says you need premium.

        • Read the press release which is the link for this deal. You have to purchase and then you'll get a refund. It's up to you if you want to risk that. Thanks for the neg though.

  • Why are the Android apps saying its incompatible with all my devices? Got an S5 and Lenovo Tab

    • +1

      Check your location.

  • +4

Signed up to an account but the videos all prompt to buy a subscription when I try them, I can browse around though. Might not be active yet..

    • +4

Yeah its weird how it's setup. I hope they don't force us to pay then wait for a refund as it's not really known how long these 'refunds' take to process..

  • I will forgive Optus and actually buy a Sub if they unlock Optus Sport for Retail Fetch boxes

  • +7

Better than Foxtel getting their grubby hands all over it

    • +1

      True.

  • Your premium access has expired.
Upgrade now to watch this video.
    WTF!!??

  • +2

Great so Optus' response to not being able to handle how many people were using their service is to make it free?

    • +1

Using PR/Media funding to pay for IT deparment's load testing.

    • +1

What else would you like them to do?

    • +1

What else can they do though to come consumers happy? Free is pretty much last resort…..

      • I know, and I'm upvoting the deal, but one would assume it's only going to cause more congestion issues.

        • Yeah true but im sure consumers are happy to watch it on SBS but at the same time, there are customers that can stream it, no problems via fetch or on their mobile devices but hey…… just wondering how much money they lost. It's interesting to see that they did not forecast this happening, I knew it would. Poor planning

        • +1

Choice between stream or FTA HD…. easy choice. And it ain't streaming from Floptus.

        • +1

          @Xizor:

I watch all my games on Optus Fetch. Quality is on par with SBS (some blurriness in the grass but colours much better) but the commentary is far, far superior.

        • @dazweeja: Agreed… David Basheer and Craig Moore commentary pales in comparison to the official commentary.

    • Exactly. Their services failed for a number of paying customers. Dont have much faith that it's going to work for the multitudes jumping onboard for free.

  • couldn't even give it away…

    • Mum……?

  • Just saw this on the news

  • Can watch the games on the sbs app too

  • mine is already free from last year………….

    • But the subscription?

  • +1

Dont forget the free fetch mini for those already subscribed

  • When do i get my refund, anyone know?

  • What a disgrace…

  • Why all videos got lockpad icon and can't be accessed?

  • +3

Errrr it's not clear… So do we pay first and refunded or there's way to bypass the $14.99?

  • How much money did they buy the rights for!?

Done big "IT" jobs will probably be available shortly!

  • Will whoever is responsible for this get a penalty?

    • +2

      More like a red card!

      • in reality, probably a promotion

  • Oh dear…will Optus be able to handle the increased usage?

    • I was thinking the same thing. Hey can’t handle their current user base so they make it available for many more users. Go figure.

      • Run from a server in some Singaporean peasant's basement?

  • +2

    Great.
So the streams are borked because of "overwhelming demand" so the answer…….allow MORE people to use the service. Genius!

    • They want to be best

      • Makes you wonder how thorough was their stress testing before they marketed the world cup soccer subscription to the general public.
        Pretty amateurish.

  • Great move Optus, until it got posted on OzBargain…

    • Better on TV with SBS anyway

  • It's still showing up as $14.95 on the app.

  • +1

Its only 'free' if you watch it on the Special Broadcasting Service (S.B.S.)

  • Can someone please explain step by step process of redemption of Optus sport free till August via all methods (iPhone, Android etc)? Currently still requests the $14.99 on iOS for me.

    regards

    Paz

  • Australians have got back a portion of the $800 million Optus ripped NBN Co for their rubbish cables. Hopefully more bad luck heads Optus's way

  • Does anyone know if you pay for the subscription through the iOS app, can you use iTunes vouchers? Do you pay through iTunes?

    Cheers

    • Yes, it says it will deduct from your iTunes account.

  • -1

Just spoke with Optus Live chat, heres their reply regarding new subscribers and being non-Optus.

“As you are a non Optus customer, we will refund the $14.99 and from now on the streaming will be directed back to SBS channels.
Right now we are working on the repayment models”.

She went on to say to use the SBS app for all matches.

So basically for iOS and Android users, if you subscribe youll be doing it for nothing as the app won’t work.

    • +1

So this deal is practically useless?

      • +1

        Just like Optus!

    • +1

Not true.App works fine and using it as I type this to watch a match I missed earlier. Also works with current live match.

  • Are they offering any deals on phone plans too? xD

  • Has anyone found a way of cheaply streaming Optus sport to several TVs in one house? What hardware works best?…

    • chromecast

screen mirroring - windows connect on win10 is a decent option.

hdmi such as mhl and slimport

      micro/mini hdmi

lots of options but depends on your tv really, is it smart? if smart, download optus sport upto 3 devices, login and mirror screen to tv.

  • +1

Great so first of all I was paying $30 a month (Optus Sport customer since January) for what everyone else gets for $15 a month. Now I am paying $30 a month for what everyone else is getting for free.

  • Looks like even sbs app is struggling..

    • watch on tv then, sbs and sbs hd.

  • -1

Let me get this straight. Optus struggles to provide a stream presumably because they couldn’t handle the volume of customers using the service. So they make it free so more people can use their already struggling service?
How is this going to end in anything but failure?

  • Thanks op

  • If I get Optus sports automatically included in my plan would I be eligible for this?

    • eligible for what? you are not paying extra for it anyway and if you are expecting some kind of refund, no.

  • +2

So what is the go with having to sign up for premium when we sign up for an account on the Optus Sport website? I tried to stream it but the pop up keeps coming up telling me to upgrade to premium. Anyone get around this or is this just another Optus screw up where they say it is all free but haven't even updated the app or the website?

  • And the deal keep getting upvotes. Am i missing anything here?

    • people are happy that they are going to be able to watch World Cup for free and those who paid are going to be refunded.

      • Yeah through SBS and not for new subscribers via Optus, which this deal is for.

  • +1

Does not work as paid service, so they made it free. It still does not work and you still have to pay hoping they refund you? Bargain of the year.

  • Wonder if I will get refunded the $14.95 that I just paid now to sign up. If not I'll just blame Ozbargain for tweaking my "interest" to see what happens. A $14.95 interest ….ha! Time will tell.

I do however expect a refund as their statement does say:
"[i] Any customer who has purchased or does purchase an Optus Sport subscription for the World Cup will be provided a refund. This offer includes the first three rounds of the Premier League and includes matches between Arsenal and Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal and Manchester United and Tottenham"

    • I have my doubts bro if you'll get refunded

      • This is exactly the deal though - pay now and get refunded up until August 31.

        • Title says Optus Sport - Free Streaming Services through to August 31 (Previously $14.99) - Includes World Cup and Start of Premier League

        • @tempura:

Yes, and Borg quoted the actual text from Optus which explains how the deal works. The title of the deal on OzBargain is irrelevant, though still technically correct.

  • Real winner for SBS now. People can watch it in HD on the TV with the good ol aerial without comprising stuff that might happen with internet speeds/quality.

  • Optus chain of events;

He shoots, he scores!! Jubilation in the crowd! Oh wait but it's ruled offside.. Red card for descent. Indefinite ban. Contract terminated.

  • Already with Optus?
Find out if you are eligible, an Optus Sport subscription is included at no additional cost on selected plans.

+1 for Optus right there. what a joke. last time i wanted to see what upgrade options were available for my 16+ year old HFC cable account their systems couldn't handle my old account either. NBN cant come soon enough (eta 2020+) i can finally say goodbye to Optus.

i'll just keep streaming from ITV and FOX

  • great gesture!

  • +1

Tried Optus sports app. Still monthly fee, so not doing that. Downloaded SBS WC app. All good.

  • +2

yep, still saying it will cost $14.99 per month. I have little faith that Optus will get it right and refund everyone so I’ll pass.

    • +1

I have faith that Optus will get it right and refund me, however that faith comes attached with 25 phone calls to chase it up, and a ticket with the ombudsman.

  • +1

This has probably already been mentioned but:

Optus couldn't deal with the unprecedented demand with people paying $14.99 a month. How the hell are they going to be able to cope with the absolute load of people now!?!?

Good intention from Optus, most likely fruitless but we'll see.

  • +3

    Just spoke to Live Chat:
We are in the process of updating our Apps and Website in order to deliver Optus Sport to all Australians for free until 31 August 2018. It will take some time for us to work through these changes. In the mean-time, if you want to access Optus Sport tonight, please purchase a subscription via your App store or Google Play and we’ll issue you a refund over the next coming weeks.

    • @tempura

Thanks, I will add this to the description

  • Has anyone tried the VR content from the World Cup app? https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/2018-fifa-world-cup/id410148…

The VR matches are viewed from a virtual corporate box at the stadium but I can't figure out how to fast forward replays.

  • Great now I can watch semi finals and finals live. Thanks OP+tus
