ASUS GTX1070 8GB STRIX $539.10 + $15.00 Delivery @ Computer Alliance eBay

PLATYPUS

Chepest GTX 1070 deal this year, and despite this its not a Windforce or Galax!

Hi everyone,

I've been eyeing off the stack of ex-mining 1070 cards showing up on Gumtree the last couple weeks (warning: expect fan failures, especially on models without ball-bearing fans), then stumbled across this when having a look for new prices on eBay.

The Strix cooling solution rivals that of the MSI Gaming X, and is notably superior to the Gaming G1 and Windforce from Gigabyte and the various mainstream Galax cards, not to mention all those completely unnecessary but sexy extra features like RGB on the top, side & bottom, chassis fan headers and sexy metal backplate.

It's not the OC version, however ALL 10 series cards have very locked down settings in the BIOS, which when combined with boost 3.0 means ALL cards of a certain model can be quickly OC'd to virtually the same specs (eg. my cheapo 1060 3GB Windforce hits 2.1GHz core and 9GHz memory 24/7 despite locked stock voltage, just like the MSI 1060 3GB Gaming X ).

More than 10 available at time of posting.

If you want to see how it compares to your existing card, then check out the following link (eg. its ~55% faster than a GTX 970 and about the same speed as a GTX 980 Ti):

IMO spend the extra on the 1070Ti or 1080

  • +4

Why wouldn't you spend an extra $100 and get the 1080?

If this was a 1070 Ti it might make it worth while

    • -6

      You mean the extra $225…

      • +6

        It's not an extra $225 for a 1080 - he's right, it's about $100.

        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MSI-nVidia-GeForce-GTX-1080-Armo…

        $629 with the PLATYPUS code.

This isn't a bad price for a 1070 but for an extra 100 bucks if you can afford it the 1080 is much better.

        • +2

Ah OK different seller. If only it was a Gaming X. Its not all about burst performance.

        • +1

Yep spot on there's been 2 deals this week for the 1080 at around $620 delivered one for the MSI and one for the Gigabyte card

        • +1

          @tg786:

Look at the recent 1080 Strix deal though, and no Gaming X deals. Much dearer. Not directly comparable to the budget alternatives. Still great value if you're just after raw FPS.

    • +1

Agreed. The performance gap between 1070 and 1080 is great enough for the extra $100.

  • +3

I have this exact card, purchased late 2016 for $719.

    I have been very happy with it. I don't really push it much (using a 2560 x 1080 monitor @ 144mhz.)

I should snap up a twin card, I specifically purchased a mobo that could SLI.. but TBH its just going so well I don't feel the need (or the wife aggro ? haha.)

    • +12

I've done so many builds with the intention of going SLI, but I wait for so long that I end up just upgrading the whole caboodle and start over with a new build… with the intention of going SLI.

      • +1

I went SLI with 2 X 960s as an upgrade. It's finicky and there's minimal support from developers. More trouble than it's worth so I'd never do it again. Might just be my experience though.

      • +5

I started out with 1070's in SLI on release, worked great in SLI supported games, but realistically SLI is dying and fewer and fewer games are offering support.

Ended up selling the cards for a profit during the mining boom and picked up an MSI Gaming X 1080Ti. IMO go with the single fastest card you can afford.

      • +1

Like the others have said, it's just not worth it. I got two GTX 280s way back when, arguably in sli's heyday. It was still not worth it in 90% of games, I ended up building two pcs with them.

  • This is a great price - wonder if it's due to the impending 11-series launch? Used both the ASUS Strix and MSI Gaming X previously, the Gaming X has a cooler and quieter solution. Can't go wrong with either.

    • +1

Ye pretty much. The prices for 1080s on last few deals have been coming up around $600-650 lately which is basically the price prior to pre-mining era. And those prices came up consistently in the last 4 weeks.

I was one of those who were super tempted to jump on one of those deals but decided to hold out for the upcoming 11 series - as these cards are actually almost 2 years old now and the supposed performance jump is significant (but who really knows?). I'd imagine there are a quite a few others in my situation.

      • I'm patiently waiting to upgrade my GTX580

        • +1

Ahaha yeah I upgraded my GTX 550ti a couple of months ago.

    • +1

The 11 series definitely are putting a pressure on the prices because nVidia is sitting on a heap of 10 series chips and needs to clear it out.

  • Galax is a perfectly fine brand, lmao.

    • Never said they weren't…But the only top tier card they make is a HOF, and you'll never find those for cheap.

  • +1

Bought the oc one last november for 550 at msy. I love strix for how quiet they are. Nothing has gone under 60fps on ultra but I'm only on 1080p still.

  • +2

    1070ti for a bit more

$575.20 after using 20% off code PICKITUP

    • Its a Windforce. This is a Strix…

      • +1

        But ti vs plain?

  • +2

Chepest GTX 1070 deal this year

    Why lie?

    • +3

Chepest doesnt mean cheapest. It is "an international company dealing in pallet and container pooling services". Or something.

    • Proof on Ozbargain?

      • I literally posted one 2 weeks ago https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/386736

        • +3

Too bad you didn't tag it as a 1070 hey…

        • -1

@Viper8: So you're a brainlet that doesn't know how to search? Got it

      • I got a Galax GTX 1070 for $484 from MSY during their 20% off sale. Had 3 Galax cards with no issues.

        • Bargain!
Never said they are problematic? They just don't run as cool or quiet and don't look as good. But they are substantially cheaper and offer virtually identical performance once overclocked so still a solid choice. Depends what you're after. Point is, if you want an over-kill cooler and all the fruit you have to pay more. So comparing the price on Galax/Windforce to a Strix/FTW/Gaming X is just plain silly.

        • @Viper8:

The one Asus card I've had HD7950-DC2T-3GD5 ran hot and crashed under load. Due to Asus re-using their fancy coolers from a previous generation to clear stock and not ensuring proper contact with the cooler and GPU die. They never properly acknowledged the issue apart from issuing a v2 of the card which had a fixed cooler, poor form from a supposedly premium brand. Probably just unlucky but not a good experience for me and will never go Asus again.

Galax cards I've had have been inaudible idling and still quiet under load. Don't look as good is subjective, Galax 1070 and 1070 Ti have adjustable RGB lighting and look fine to me. Couldn't care anyway as I'm not a 12 year old with a windowed PC case.

        • +1

          @Vert93:

Sigh. I never said all ASUS are good. Dual is cheapo and Armor is OK. The whole time I've said Strix (flagship). And I'm only talking about the 10-series here.
I also never said that Galax runs hot or loud; I said they don't run AS cool or quiet. If you don't believe me then go look at all the comparison reviews out there.
Again, I'm not bagging the Galax cards (I've owned one previously), however they're just not comparable in price to flagship cards. They get the job done without issue and at a lower price, but if you want the best then they're not it, and you need to pay more.

      • I mean, you can get Harvey Norman to price match the MSI card and use an amex.

  • Running my 2x970s SLI for over 2 years now, i feel the time is coming to jump ship to grab a 1080/1080ti soon!

  • +2

For a 1070 strix this is a good deal. OP just ignore those who don't understand that a strix isn't the same as any shroud…

    • +1

      IKR.
      I can't see a Gaming X or Strix 1080 on eBay for under $750.
That means you're paying a good 40% extra for the additional ~25% horsepower if you still want the top tier cooling solution and all the other bells and whistles.

  • lol trying to sell my 1070 for 450 on gumtree. i guess ill have to drop the price. mines not a mining card btw, was used for gaming only and now i've fazed out of gaming

    • +2

bad timing. wiiu (cemu) and ps3 (rpcs3) emulators are just starting to get off the ground.

      • bad timing. wiiu (cemu) and ps3 (rpcs3) emulators are just starting to get off the ground.

A GTX 1060 or even 1050ti is fine for both these emulators.

Cemu has been the best way to play Botw for half a year now.

      • How well does the PS3 Emulator run? Also can you sync trophies and stuff? What about 360 emulators? Thanks!

        • Not too badly for the games that are compatible (with possibly some texture issues or crashes), also no syncing plus no 360 emulator.

Red Dead Redemption is finally going to be coming to PC! It's not the way we had hoped, but I'll take it!

        • playing vanillaware games on the ps3 emulator and it runs great. new release come every month. cemu gets better every month. Plenty of videos on youtube to watch. I had a few issues getting odins sphere to run, but found the fix on youtube.
And although theres a lot of instructions for getting these games running at 4k, while its some benefit, running it smoothly with no loading times has made it a great experience. So yeah the above mentioned video cards are fine

        • @c0balt:

Thanks for the reply. Ohh it's shame you can't sync trophies, for some reason I thought they had managed to hide the altering from Sony like in the early PS3 jailbreak days.

Oh wow it's amazing Red Read finally made it to PC LOL albeit via emulation!

        • +1

          @DarthAntz:

Thank you for the info, yea I was settling on a 1060, but emulators are something I'd like to leave open. I think the 1070 will definitely be one of the best priced cards now that things are starting to come down.

Wow I didn't even know they could push it to 4K, looking forward to the improvements that come to emulation!

    • Same as me… Been trying to sell for a month now… All i've been getting is 250-300 offers… -_-

      • $100 cash if u want it gone 2day bro

    • You should have sold it as soon as news got out that bitmain was releasing equihash asic miners.
Most of us managed to pawn off our 1070's for $500 - $550 after than (depending on condition and card type).

  • -8

not the cheapest not the best wait for a cheap ti or cheap 1080. Cards will fall a lot in all probability after the stupidity of previous years.

Don't think pc gaming will really recover from this greed. Many gamers moved on.

in fact eu article 13 makes pretty clear that the days of personal computers are nearly over, with news filtering on the horizon. Why bother with a platform that does not allow access to documents, news or anything worth reading.

you can just hoover up filtered fake news vomit from your phone…

    • +1

"days of personal computers are nearly over" yea for people that just browse news.
We're talking about gamers here…browsing PC's were not effected by the surge in mid-high end gaming GPU's…
Tech gets more powerful, but games get more demanding. PC's still have a lot of life in them yet.

    • -1

The EU's dodgy Article 13 copyright directive has been rejected. PC Gaming is growing exponentially so not going anywhere.

Only fake news here is your entire comment.

      • -2

article 13 is back in September, and no games aint getting more demanding only ultra graphics settings.

All content will have to be filtered under 13, not just news. Stupidity is here - you can't see now.

  • +1

I bought this card back in January for $639 and I absolutely love it. It was cheap at the time, however for now I'd pay the extra 100 or so for the 1080. I use my 1070 on my 3440x1440 monitor. Handles games like the Witcher 3, Destiny 2 very well and handles all my VR games without issue (Robo Recall is a must). If you do have the extra money, buy the gtx1080 but I can't say I have had a bad experience with the gtx1070.

    • -5

1080 Strix is more than $200 dearer than this. The $100 more from peoples posts above are for the budget variants.

      • +1

Don't get hung up on whether it is Strix, Gaming X etc.

A 1080 is a 1080. Sure some may not look as good or run slightly hotter/louder due to different cooling solutions, but performance is going to be on par no matter what 1080 you get.

        • -3

Kinda like I said in my original post?…

        • +1

          @Viper8:
You've made multiple other posts basically stating the other cards are inferior and almost making it sound as though you're better off getting a strix 1070 than a lower tier 1080 (i.e Galax or Gigabyte windforce).

Just pointing out for others who may not have the knowledge not to get hung up on this. Regardless of what 1080 it is, if there's only about $100 in it, go for the 1080.

      • +2

Not sure if you are getting the point from him or previous posts.
GTX1080 is above par compared to even 1070 Strix. No one is suggesting to buy similar 1080 Strix.

I think it is worth extra $100 spent for normal GTX 1080.

        • +1

Precisely! if a 1080 is approx $100 more, I'd take that anyday regardless of Gigabyte windforce, galax etc.

        • @combatant: yep, $100 would be better to run higher frame rates and it'd be a better experience overall

  • To those who think GPU prices will keep falling:

    • -2

could maybe who gives a shit really?

  • +1

Pay the xtra hundred for 1080

  • For the 1080 - Gigabyte Windforce vs MSI Armor - which one would you pick? WHich runs cooler?

    • -1

Armor uses the Gaming X cooler, which is definitely superior to the Windforce. Its basically a "pure" Gaming X without the backplate and RGB. Probably the ideal pick if you don't have a windowed case as it'll still run very cool and quiet.

      • +1

I think the Armor uses the older Twin Frozer V cooler whereas the Gaming X uses the Twin Frozer VI. Other than that the differences are just a different shroud design and lack of backplate on the Armor.

It will be cooler than a founders edition card, but won't perform as well as the Gaming X in terms of cooling performance.

But agree that other things come into it as personal preference such as rgb etc.

Personally I'd go the gigabyte since it has a backplate and the Armor X doesn't, provided it fits in his case of course.

Either would do just fine though and perform the same. The Armor might be ever so slightly quieter due to using two larger fans as opposed to three smaller ones, but the difference will be minimal.

        • True, 5 x 6mm heat pipes instead of 5 x 6mm and 1 x 8mm (all solid).

But it beats the 2 hollow 8mm on the Windforce. For reference the Gaming G1 takes it up to 3 x 8mm hollow pipes, then there's the Strix with 5 x solid 6mm. No point having 3 fans and a massive radiator when there's not enough heat pipes to transfer the heat to them…

    • There's honestly nothing between them in terms of temperature and noise.

Couple of things to consider though and will be down to personal preference.

From a quick look, the Gigabyte Windforce 1080 has a backplate, whereas the MSI Armor doesn't.

Also, being a three fan design the Gigabyte model will be longer and you may need to consider whether it will fit in your case.

If prices were equal I'd personally go the Gigabyte, assuming it fits in your case.

      • That's not true. Read any review and they'll tell you that the Windforce suffers relative to the competition due to a lack of heat pipes, something which the Armor certainly doesn't lack. Not saying the Windforce isn't adequate (I do own one after all), but the Armor has the superior cooling solution.

        • +1

Heat-pipes aren't everything, I've read reviews saying the Armor was less effective compared to others. Also, all the windforce 1080's appear to have three heat-pipes from what I can see. Notwithstanding, they both perform within a few degrees of each other, so no matter which one I'm pretty sure he'll be happy with it.

        • @combatant:
Sorry i was looking at 1070's.

        • @Viper8:
          No problem.
