  • Can anyone comment on the quality of the Bluetooth kit? It's a significant discount to established motorcycle kits like the Sena products.

    • +6

My father actually picked up one and he vouches for the quality of it so that was one of the things I had planned to pick up this year.

I figured if I wasn't impressed by the quality their return policy is easy anyway.

      • I bought one a couple years ago and it's been fantastic. A few mates that have brand name ones have tried it out and love it.

    • +2

I got one a few years ago, it's okay for music but I had issues with the microphone.

      • +1

Did you have the microphone the right way? One side should be sealed and the other open.

        • I plugged the fuzzy bit into the unit on the side.. isn't that the right way to do it?

    • +3

Never used sena but the bluetooth kit does the job. It's not particularly sturdy though. The plastic wheel you use to control the volume broke about 6 months in (still works though and you can manually turn the knob if you open it up. Set volume to full and control volume using your phone or google now - ok google set volume to x). After 2 years the clip broke but I think I had tightened it too much. Not an audiophile and besides my helmet has some wind noise but the sound is pretty good. Better than the cheapy v6 i bought on ebay. People don't have any problem hearing me up to about 100km/hr. (At that speed I don't want to be talking to long with ppl anyway). For $50 it's definitely worth it. It pairs well to phone and even to the v6 which I use for my pinion.

    • +1

Me and my mate picked it up last year, it is good for conversations and for music, but not that great for answering calls while riding. I am picking up another one for my spare helmet.

      • Thanks guys. Will pick one up myself and see how it goes. Mostly interested in just listening to music with perhaps the occasional phone call.

      • +2

Did you try conversing with other people that had a sena? Just seeing if it's compatible in group conversations with other comms

    • +1

I've used mine since I bought it when they had the motorcycle special buys in 2016. It's lasted this long, the mike works fine for calls and controlling Google Now, even at high speeds and with a less than soundproof helmet. The only issue I've found so far is that the headphone/charging connection (a mini USB 4-pin) is starting to loosen, so I sometimes have to wiggle the jack in order to get sound from both speakers. And the rider-to-rider connection is fiddly. Otherwise, I use it literally every day, and have done for 2 years, without any major issues. I get about 5-8 hours of use on a charge, plenty enough for a week of commutes or a day's ride.

I have been waiting to pick up another one for my road helmet, and probably another as a spare.

    • Had one and mostly used it for listening to podcasts and music.

Took a few phone calls on it and never had anyone say anything about the quality.

The clip that attaches it to the helmet broke on mine and I never got around to fix it up because we moved shortly thereafter to a house right next to a train station - the Tuono hasn’t turned a wheel in months.

Only annoyance for me was the USB plug to charge was one of those odd sizes that you hardly find anywhere so had to keep a special cable on the charger for it. Maybe they’ve updated it to the more common micro usb ?

      • I ended up buying a camera (Olympus, methinks?) to USB cable that had the same fitting and was a lot longer, so I could charge it where I hang up my helmet in the garage.

    • Can you get the same one from eBay cheaper? It looks familiar

  • What did you pick up that’s lasted? May be keen to get some leathers.

    • I picked up the jacket last year for $169 and it has been great. I'm keen to pick up the boots this year and possibly a set of gloves.

    • +7

FWIW, I got a decent leather jacket on ebay earlier this year for just under $110. Most of these cheap leather products come out of the same factories in Pakistan; if you need to try it on then get one from Aldi, but otherwise you can get them cheaper online.

      Edit: this one https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Motorcycle-Leather-Jacket-Black-…

      • If that’s the case should I not avoid them all completely? Reading all the YouTube reviewers (Fortnine esp) has me iffy about anything that isn’t full grain or at least 1mm thick leather.

        • +1

Don't forget that the body armour (in the shoulder pads and elbows) is a secondary layer of abrasive protection.

I own an RJAYS leather motorcycle jacket (RRP ~$600 new, 15 years old, 30000km of riding). The quality of the leather is soooo much better.

Even if I could find an ALDI jacket that fit me I wouldn't buy it. I've been checking out the ALDI/Pakistan made leather jackets (+ synthetic jacket) each year. The inside stitching is often very poor. You'll find loose threads and low quality zippers.

I ride in all seasons, in rain + sub zero temperatures. When considering leather jackets you should also consider your comfort. ie. the water proofing/resistance. The thicker the leather and better the stitching determines how long the jacket can keep out water.

        • @Mumbles:
I’m using a textile jacket Rn with prob cheapo shoulder and elbow armour, but I bought CE level 2 back protector as a replacement for the foamy.

Worth getting leather or stick with this?

        • @Mumbles: Hey there Mumbles :).

Your RJAYS jacket sounds awesome, how much did it cost and where did you buy it?
I'm after something a little stylish, but good quality and very good protection.

          Thanks.

        • +1

@Wystri Warrick: RJAYS products are usually stocked in budget or very small motorcycle shops. RJAYS is an Australian company that's been making motorcycle leathers since February 1990.

You won't be able to find RJAYS in the popular and large motorcycle stores as it is one of the cheapest Australian brands on the market. Most stores prefer not to stock RJAYS as there is little profit.

My jacket is actually a hand me down from my father. So its actually done twice the kilometres.

RJAY's is in my opinion one of the best bang for buck brands. I bought my RJAY's Striker helmet brand new and found that it beat most Shoei and Arai helmets in helmet safety tests. eg. https://www.carsguide.com.au/car-news/bike-helmets-rated-192…

Unfortunately RJAYS used to be very popular years ago. It's becoming terribly hard to find stockists as time goes on. Most riders now care about brands :(

        • @Mumbles:
Thanks for the rjays link Mumbles.

That's just the helmet comparison tests I was looking for.
Wow the rjays sp 2 is really quite affordable and it performed second best.

That's a shame :(, they have such good quality products and at very good prices.
Leaning towards rjays when it comes to replace the Aldi gear, thanks Mumbles :).

    • I have last years Carbon Knuckle gloves and they have had no problems with daily riding.
Note this years do look different though with a solid wist protector instead of the velcro straps on last years.

Unfortunately I have not had much luck in the size department for the rest of their gear.

    • +2

Don't get the thinsulate gloves. They aren't warm at all. I found the best thing for cold weather other than heated grips (… mmm heated grips….) is to wear woolen gloves underneath the carb knuckle gloves. Fortunately I had worn them in well and there is enough give in the leather so they are still comfy with the undergloves on.

      • This is the first winter I tried wearing two gloves. I tried the woollen gloves underneath for a 2 hours interstate ride. The woollen gloves were great for warmth but too snug for my carb knuckle gloves which pulled on my skin so that I had a bruised/torn fingernail.

Instead I've switched to a super thin glove. Aldi $6 mobile phone glove. Fits inside way better with no weird wrinkling.

Another option is thin glove liners like what ski/snowboarders can wear beneath their water proof glove.

    • +1

the balaclava is awesome. I can't live without it during winter. Warm and comfy

      • Have you tried sleeping with it on?

      • agreed. the balaclava is a must!

      • I find it great for late night outings!

        • Do you come back with lots of stolen goods? =p

  • I fiund it interesting that they always put armour on the knuckles of gloves. If you come off your bike, you never hit your knuckles, it's always the palm.

    • +16

My understanding is that knuckles have little fat and no muscle so they can't absorb an impact as well as your palms can. The hard armour aims to spread the load over the knuckles so you don't break em.

The palms have leather because the fat and muscles can absorb the impact better so they just need abrasion resistance. Some gloves (like the ones I currently have) have a plastic protector over the palm for added impact absorption.

It's possible to hit your knuckles if you high side and get flipped off your bike or have impacts with vehicles.

      • +2

Breaking the scaphoid bone in your wrist is probably the most common motorcycle related break. That's caused by catching yourself palm-first when you hit the road. That protector on your palm is probably a palm slider to prevent that from happening.

        • Exactly what I did. I landed on my feet, and fell forward on my right palm. Three fractures in my scaphoid and a cast for 10 weeks ;)

I actually thought I just sprained it, until 4 days later when I decided to get it X-rayed.. ;)

      • +1

Had a mate come off on the highway at 110 and he remembers slapping his palm down on the bitumen. Other than a bit of a sore back, he was uninjured, crazy lucky.

    • +11

general rule of thumb with bike gear is - protect complex joints… there is no denying if you fall off you are going to get hurt. A broken arm is generally a simple break, quick recovery, little rehab. A broken nuckle, shoulder, knee, ankle etc (all places that have extra safety armor) tend to be complicated parts of the body which when broken/damaged involve long winded recoveries with multiple surgeries, months/years/lifetime of rehab etc.

That is my understanding as a motorbike rider :)

    • +4

Ever had a rock hit your knuckles without knuckle protection while riding? Trust me. You'll want it.

      • +6

its a close battle between rock to the knuckle, bug in the eye at 60 or that realization moment that your wet weather gear is INCREDIBLE…right before you feel that first drop of water roll off the helmet and perfectly maneuver the gear before landing on your back, that dripping feeling haunts me.

        • Don't forget a wasp/bee lodged between your thigh and the bike.

        • @Quarn: that is terrifying

    • +1

It's hard to put armour on the palm and still be able to grip things properly.

    • I came off my bike and I saw some damage on the knuckle area of my alpine stars glove. But yeah on my other off I had my aldi gloves on and it tore the leather on palm near the slider on palm side. Had the aldi gloves for 2 years as my daily glove and they've served me well but I'm going to get a new pair due to the tear.

  • +6

Got the jeans last year - still wear them almost every day. Great quality, very warm and lots of padding. Only negative is that they're extremely unfashionable, they're basically flares. I'd recommend going a size down to what you usually get.

Got the leather jacket too but ended up returning it as it offered no warmth.

    • Thanks for the info I might have to check out the jeans myself! I always find myself layering when I'm wearing the jacket. It seems to be quite heavy with the armour but not super warm. It does feel like it would be quite effective in a fall however.

      • Did you remove the lining inside? I did that during summer and had to remember to put it back in for winter. But yeah even then I need to put on my thermals. The aldi motorcycle thermals were good but doesn't look like they have them this year.

        • oops I'm blind they do have them.

    • The jacket is for crash protection, not warmth - size up and wear layers underneath.

      • +2

Or get a decent cordura jacket which’ll give you warmth, waterproofing and crash protection enough for urban riders.

    • Flares I don’t mind (even prefer) but baggy assed jeans are a very bad look and what’s more really uncomfortable. I’d jump at these if they had anything like a decent fit or style to them.

    • I got the leather jacket and have been wearing it during winter. As singlemalt72 said you just wear layers underneath. It's water resistant enough for a 40 min ride in a shower but yeah any longer or heavier rain and the water is gonna eventually penetrate in. I've had a couple of drops at about 40km/hr and not sure if it's just the type of fall but there's no marks on the jacket after I cleaned all the dirt off them. You couldn't tell I had a fall. The reflective bits are now faded but other than that the jacket is still good after 2 years. Velcro still good, zippers are great.

    • Damn, my current jeans are the same. Do they have different colours? Maybe if I go one size down and black they will be OK?

      • Just blue I think.

  • Anyone got any feedback on the full face helmet?

    • +1

Most of the gear is fine - abrasion and impact resistance is about what you expect from mid-range gear without advanced impact absorbing layers.
As for the helmet, It's a POS.
      It is heavy
      It is noisy
The visor mechanism is crap as is the ventilation
      It is fragile

      Basically an ice cream bucket.

You can't get reasonable helmet for less than about $180 (look for HJC, Scorpion and cheaper Bell's and Nolans in $180-250 price range if you value not eating through a straw and toileting in a nappy for the rest of your life)

      • Not sure if last year's helmet was different but I got a helmet from 2 years ago and it's been fine for me. It's lighter than my aria vector 2 and quieter too. But yeah the visor mechanism is rubbish and the sunshade was not great. I ended up removing the whole sun visor as it would drop down on it's on occasionally.

  • +4

The balaclava will be popular at my local store.

    • +3

I hope you mean your local ALDI during the sale.

      • +2

Then it'll be popular at his local convenience store later that night lol

    • +8

Better to have cheap gear than no gear at all IMO.

      • +1

From what I understand the Aldi gear is built to the EU standard, which is actually more strict than AU standards.

    • +2

God damn temporary Australians riding motos to the God damn A-League. Should ban sokkah and motorbikes to protect the Australian way of life!

    • +1

      wow

      • -3

        As bad as cyclists

  • Yay this years boots don't look kinky and weird :)

    • +1

I thought the same thing! Actually look decent!

    • erm.. yehtheydo

  • Just wondering if this is available in every aldi store. I've always missed out on these deals

    • As far as I know this should be available in every ALDI store however I imagine available stock differs dramatically. I know last year at my local ALDI at opening time there was a lot of people rushing in and there was a lot of rummaging at the tables.

    • Check different Aldi stores, as stocks vary and another issue is finding the right size.

  • +1

    That's disappointing, they're not selling a motorbike.

    • Maybe next year.

  • No weatherproof gear.. I bought some pants years ago and they're finally need replacing..

    • I noticed no lightweight summer jacket this year also. Just the full leather version.

      • Yeah thats a great thing to sell at the end of winter ~thumbs up to aldi~

  • +4

I'm not in the LGBTXYZ Feminist social justice warrior club but is it really just for Men?
My wife wants to ride pillion but I told her when Aldi have the motorbike gear sale we can get her gear.

    • +2

It does seem to be advertised for men however there is some gear for women for example the leather jacket advertises a ladies version. Most of the gear should be fairly unisex such as boots, helmets, socks, midlayer gear etc.

  • +1

yessss. I bought the socks last year, they're really comfy and good.

  • +2

Those merino tops are fantastic. Perfect for every damn day. I bought three tops last time and wish I'd bought more.

The jeans are good quality, though last year's jeans had the velcro for the armour on the underside, hence I had to modify mine to stop the pads randomly dropping out. I hope they've fixed that on this year's version.

This year I might try out the gloves, just to see how they go.

    • +1

Are you talking about the merino mid top?
      (the zip one).

I wanna buy one just to wear as a jumper over my shirts at work lol

  • +2

Oh goody. Been waiting for this to come around. I definitely want to pick up a cover

  • +2

Balaclava for mother-in-law. I'll tell her to wear it at the next family gathering.

  • +1

Found a pair of medium RST gloves last week. Wet from rain, but free!

  • +3

I came off my bike while I was on my L's after being sideswiped by a red P plater. The Aldi gear actually protected me during my fall/skid.

I'm hoping the jeans don't look like my parents bellbottoms this time round.

  • +1

Hey guys motorbike noobie here, hoping someone could give me some advice :).
    I'm after a ce en 13595 jacket with en 1621-1 & 2 protectors.
About how much would a fashionable reputable brand jacket cost?

Worried this jacket looks weird, not very fashionable?
    buttstuff and 0jay's comments haven't helped :(…

    Thanks :).

    • +1

The jackets this year actually look better than last years IMO but I still have my one from last year and can't see anything wrong with it!

      • +1

Thanks for the fast reply adamfury :).

        Great deal post BTW.
I bought the cover, cloves and 2 pairs of socks.

        • +1

          Nice and thank you!

I got the boots, bluetooth, face wrap and socks!

        • @adamfury:
Is bluetooth works for listening music from phone?

        • +1

          @talktoronak: Sure does!

  • +1

I was browsing at my local aldi store the other day and not intending to buy anything as i have all the motorcycle gears already.

Ended up getting myself a pair of boots and a few other stuffs as spares. Quality appeared ok.

  • hmmmm been thinking of learning how to bike
