      JV, is that you?

The "killer" may well be:"must have Matching Warranty"

Still of an overseas vendor wants to sell, money may well offer a 1 year warranty, hoping that the high return shipping fee will dissuade Aussies from using their warranty.

  • +1

pretty good news none the less! perhaps a few examples would be great though.

    • Umart Samsung GALAXY s9 deal for $999.

      • For $949.05? bargain!

        • +5

950 AUD from office work is a bargain.

          @ChickenAdobo:

The item says its out of Stock so you might have trouble doing a Price-beat on that, might vary store by store on that one

        • @1112223334: Tried it over the phone, didnt have any luck, representative said it needed to be in stock. However it did seem promising up until then….

        • +18

@ChickenAdobo: No Bro, $950 for a phone is not a bargain.

        • -2

          @Budju: Thanks for your input!

        • +3

@Rigby: Yea no worries. Turns out you can get good phones like these for ≤ $500 on the regular.

      • +30

Would have to be an identical model number.

Most overseas stock have different model numbers for same products.

So most price match requests won't get approved

They are just following buntings price match model where they have same stock with different product codes/model numbers

        • +14

I want to highlight this as well, the number of up votes this "deal" is getting seems to indicate people don't understand that they can reject you if model numbers are different - and they most likely will be.

Case in point, I went to try get officeworks to price match a lenovo yoga 310 from The good guys. They refused as they said the model number is different. What hope is there that a grey import will have the same model number?

I called around some stores, TGG and Harvey Norman, all the sales guys I talked to said the chains sold different model yoga 310 to each other and would not price match.

        • +1

          @fourofjacks:
Im preeeeeetty sure its the same laptop with different model number - made to identify stock from different stores. This happens all the time with laptops…

        • +4

Yeap I believe so as well and also makes it difficult for consumers from being able to compare between stores. It's a deliberate ploy by Manufacturers & Vendors to keep prices higher. Classic other example is with Mattresses i.e. just labelled differently for each store to give the vendor more Sales power without affecting it's competitors.

        • @ATangk: In the case of the lenovo yoga 310, they were slightly different specs between the stores.

      • Someone needs to try this :D

It would depend on the store whether they will be picky because of the colour. I'd be happy with a blue one though for $949!

    • will they accept ebay.com.au?

      • -1

Let us know how it goes :)

        • +1

I think as least Amazon AU should be acceptable, how is that different from greystock

    • +1

      nonetheless is one word.

      • thanks for your value add (yes this was intentional.)

  • +55

This is a game changer. Thanks for sharing

    • +7

Once GST + Tax kicks in, it will make Online Purchases less competitive. I guess that's how these big chain stores can survive.

*Oh forgot shipping + handling too!

      • -13

It already has kicked in so you pay more tax while Officeworks pays almost no tax.

Pretty dumb voting decision to vote to tax yourself to subsidise businesses like Officeworks who pay almost no tax while using much more infrastructure than you but that's what Australian voters did when they voted liberal or Labour neo-liberal regimes.

        • +16

The employees enjoy 1st world employment conditions and pay tax on their wages tho!

        • +5

Firstly, no one voted to have GST applied to ebay etc.

Secondly, officeworks etc all pay their GST obligations as they can't avoid them, it's tax on profits that a lot of them get out of. They still have to pay 10% on any sale (and get refunded 10% of COGs).

Thirdly, it's not just the big boys that get helped by this, it's every aussie small business that has to compete with online sites that don't charge GST. As small business pays the bulk of the tax in the country, helping them will increase the amount of tax revenue by a lot, rather than profit going overseas and avoided.

I'm not a liberal supporter in general but this policy actually makes complete sense and if you think otherwise you've probably read the propaganda put out by the multinationals (ebay etc) that opposed it.

        • @T Man: The reason the threshold was originally increased is because the enforcement cost is higher than the the revenue.

Agreed that it’s good for very large foreign companies to stop avoiding GST but the smaller ones still do, and it really pisses me off that Amazon put it in the too hard basket as the only reason I would order from them is because no one else anywhere sold a particular product. :(

        • @T Man:

T Man, your logic is not wanted here…. but seriously, props on your comment. Not many people understand the positive implications on small business, with particular reference to your line of discussion.

        • +1

          Are you deliberately ignorant?

In FY2016/17, Wesfarmers (owners of Officeworks) collected and paid in excess of $6.6b in Australian taxes (source: Pg. 7, http://www.wesfarmers.com.au/docs/default-source/asx-announc…, and of course their audited annual reports).

Whilst the change to import taxation for <$1000 goods for regular Joe’s and Jill’s was a daft idea, to say Officeworks pays no tax is a complete load of bollocks.

        • @thewinchester: Diji1 just likes to lie make stuff up. Can't let facts get in the way of a good neo-liberal whinge.

        • @thewinchester: What's wrong with being deliberately ignorant?

      • +5

"GST +tax"?? GST IS tax ;-)

    • +26

      Kudos to Officeworks

Adapt or die. Hope some other retail ostriches would stop burying head in sand

  • +1

That seems like a really odd choice from their perspective. Do you think they'll do anything like "GST inclusive price" (i.e. they'll beat grey stock only on their GST exclusive price)?

    • +3

I'm guessing the recent GST changes must have influenced this decision, but I'm not sure if that has changed at all, in the past we always perform the Price-beat from just he listed price plus shipping if applicable (if that helps).

      • What gst change?

        • +1

The gov started charging 10% GST on international goods online

    • +5

Of course it will be GST inclusive because you need to pay the GST so that's part of the price.

  • +37

Props to officeworks for being competitive

    • +57

It's good for consumers short term, but Price-beating is actually an uncompetitive strategy in the long term, since it makes the prices stagnate across multiple stores. So in the long run it can actually make prices less competitive

      • Explain that? Are you saying direct price competition keeps prices up?

        • +7

He said it makes them lazy with having good prices unless you match.

        • +33

Yeah it can, if Harvey Norman for example is selling the same product, they might not lower their price now because the know Officeworks will just lower theirs too, so it becomes a stalemate where the price freezes up higher.

        • +2

          @1112223334:
We need more Aldi's in the tech market so the Bunnings of the tech market will match

        • +1

@Seedy seed: That's exactly what EB Games does. They're prices are usually RRP and many staff will price match with just an ask as they're aware how much of a rip-off their prices are.

        • +3

@1112223334: this is the smartest thing I've learned today

      • +2

The average time it takes to pricebeat makes it purely beneficial who value money over time.

I prefer the exact opposite - paying more for quicker service.

        • +2

It depends how much money! Last time HN pricematched a $2599($2999 sticker price) DSLR in 2 minutes and the price went down to $2160(Digidirect’s price). I guess wasting 2 minutes for saving $439 was worth it

        • +16

@GregFiona: Not if you earn more than $13,170 per hour.

        • @GregFiona: If you happened to be conveninent to Harvey Norman, needed it urgently and quickly found a price online that they matched on the spot without the typical mucking around they do, sure, you saved a few dollars postage and delivery time.

But if not, wouldn't it have been quicker just to get it from Digidirect at the same price?

        • +1

@Janko: nope, because I got another $200 off by using my 2 AMEX cards(AMEX HN deal).
Also it happens that HN is 2.6 km from home and Digidirect 3.6km

        • @Boodek: I think I got ripped off then!

        • @GregFiona: Is this a recent offer? Which one?

        • @hvlam: Unfortunately no, it was last year in November

      • +1

Announcing a price-beat is also a warning to others that if you cut costs and prices, we're still going to take some of that business

      • But that's the case only if you assume a significant chunk of consumers would bother price matching. Even if half of the consumers price match, lowering own pricing would still be more beneficial.

        • +3

If you cut 75% of the profit margin out of something you’ve got to sell 4x as many just to be back where you started. A certain number of consumers don’t even bother shopping around much less price matching so it’s all about branding.

It’s like Bunnings who advertise lowest prices guaranteed but make it impossible to price match due to stocking subtly different models of things. The make 100x as much profit with high prices and a marketing message that convinces you they are low than the would get actually lowering them, especially since almost no one comparison shops most of their products.

        • @Bargs: Bunnings and Officeworks are somewhat different in that most items at Bunnings are OEM which you aren't expected to find or match elsewhere. Much less so for Officeworks.

  • +4

Are you sure? It still says "identical products" which means with identical warranty. Seems to me their policy would justify not price-matching grey imports.

    • +2

Yeah, it's always said that which was why we previously didn't Price-beat with greystock, honestly i'm not sure why it stills says that, might be so they can go back on the decision later when they lose so much money, I hope someone else who works at Officeworks can come in and confirm what i'm saying, (Or I can provide proof to the mods)

      • I hope you're right, because it would be awesome! Maybe the change just hasn't hit the website yet :)

        • Yeah i'll keep an eye out, the changes might not be for the whole country yet, so they might only change it once its everywhere

    • That does sound pretty feasible. Maybe they come back and say this only applies to products with true global warranties (since otherwise non-identical)

    • +23

This is part of what we got sent today

As of the today, “Identical Warranties” will no longer be a condition of our Price Beat Guarantee (PBG) Policy.
This change ensures that regardless of the warranty type provided by a competitor, if the product is identical (for example, same model number and specifications) we will honour the price match and apply the PBG.

      • -12

mind to provide a scan of the memo you got?

        • +5

Not sure why I was neg.

I was only thinking if OW refused to price match with this new policy we can show them the memo saying otherwise.

        • @Rakddon: Yeah, friend just had them refuse a price match on the Nokia 8 because warranty

        • +1

@Kramo: as per obit41 advice, friend managed to price match DWI through the 1300 OFFICE number and click & collect

        • +1

          If it helps:

          Old Policy

Our guarantee applies to all identical products and services with identical warranties that are:

          New Policy

Our guarantee applies to all identical products and services that are:

Basically 'with identical warranties' was removed and everything else remains the same.

        • @hamza23:
          Thanks

  • This will be great if you need something in a pinch. Although Dwi shipping is rapid anyway

  • Are they sure about that? A lot of people will go there to ask for price beat on Samsung phone.

  • Very good news!!!, Thanks OP!

  • +5

This post must hold the record for one of the fastest 0 to 100 vote count!

  • Holy crap that is insane. Any news when it'll come to Sydney?

    • +1

Might already be there, but I only know for Victoria, sometimes they do changes state by state or just individual stores, sometimes its the whole company, would be great if someone else could confirm

      • As I understand from the OW website it's nationwide now.

      • +9

        Is nation wide can confirm

  • Is this on the official website anywhere? (about grey imports) just curious.

    • I couldn't see anything about it there, first thing I checked, the website never actually specified about imports, it just said identical stocked product which would include warranty, but that is still there

      • No mention it had to be an Australian Store though:

What is excluded from the Price Beat Guarantee?
Cashback and coupon offers (i.e. supplier cashback or reduced price available via paper coupon or electronic codeword)
Commercial quantities and pricing (i.e. a reduced price not available to the public)
Stock liquidations (i.e. competitor clearance products or goods sold by a business placed into receivership)

        • If you've ever tried to price beat in-store, the employees always want to look up the store to see if the website ends in .com.au, and they want to see a ABN somewhere on the website

Attempting to price beat grey import items in the past led me down the rabbit hole of just how many things they can knock you back on, including aspects that aren't listed in your post above unfortunately

        • @fleetfeather: I tried to price match a good photo scanner a couple of years back, because they advertised it for $999, and umart had it for $750. They wouldn't honour it because it was a 'special order item' for Officeworks.

        • @macrocephalic:

That's true, OW wouldn't price match/beat as it was a 'special order item' for Officeworks.
          I also experience this before.

        • +6

@macrocephalic: The OW down the road from me acknowledged I found a better deal on a locally stocked mobile that met all their requirements for price beat, then didn't even price match it let alone beat it. They said the 'best they could do was [some dollar value more expensive than it should of been according to their guarantee]'

I couldn't help but laugh. I walked out, called the OW phone number, did the price beat in the car over the phone for pickup at the store I was just in, and finally got the phone at the price their guarantee should've said it would be…

        • @fleetfeather: Well done.

        • @Rakddon: Special order item = if you want to pay the sticker price, they’ll order from Umart and mark it up for you because they can’t buy it any cheaper..

          Probably.

  • Not sure how it would work with say an S9 grey market that has dual sim. Since technically its not identical to the AU stocked S9.
    e.g https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/samsung-galaxy-s9-dual-sim-64gb…

    • +7

Yeah it would have to be the same item still, so that wouldn't work. This will still be annoying with items that change the device per region I imagine, but items with no variants (like the new iPhone XS i've heard) should be fine

      • Also, as you can see there, Kogan doesn't use a .com.au domain, which doesn't count according to your post?

        • @jazoom
          Have you tried using Dicksmith.com.au
Kogan owns Dicksmith. Both sells grey imports.

        • Looks like the .com.au isn't really a rule as posted in the edit by a mod, I was just told that as a guide so I guess it's not a hard rule.

        • @1112223334: Fair enough. I can totally understand that rule though if they did make it.

        • @jazoom:
Yeah they might be leaving it vague on purpose atm to see the reaction from consumers first, who knows!

  • +1

lots of upvotes but no deals! I am trying to find something worthy of a deal.. any ideas?

    What about:

    Iphone 8 Plus 64gig - Kogan = 1199 Officeworks = $1196 ==> Fail
    Iphone 8 Plus 256gig - Kogan = 1439 Officeworks = $1446.00 ==> Beat by 5% = 1367.05

    • Too many deals for your appetite :)

    • +3

      Or maybe, don't.

Honestly, this post is enough. If OzB goes crazy abusing this on the first day then we all lose.

Silently now, WD 8tb external $230.95 via Newegg pricematch $221 shipped + GST

      • Not sure OW sell the one with US power adapter to match tbe Newegg one.

    • Sure, just look for any grey import deals here at OzBargain and go to Officeworks to price match.

  • This is massive. Well done Officeworks.

Hopefully it isn't sullied by some of the OW price matching experiences I've had in WA (hiding stock; matching price nationwide very quickly so almost nobody gets the 5% extra)

    • +4

Don't bother going in-store to price beat, call the 1300 number it's much easier. Item can be delivered to your preferred store from warehouse if no stock available.

      • Unless you want the item straight away or your planning to use gift cards and your order is under $55

        • Only takes a day or 2 for item to be ready for pickup.

        • @tranter:
Yes that's true but some people want it right there and then.

        • @Rakddon If the local store does have stock then usually you can go in and pick it up the same day, as long as you ring at a reasonable hour and the staff can find the item of course. It's just a way of sorting it out before you leave home. Someone could visit the store without ringing and it turns out they didn't have stock so they wouldn't get it immediately anyway.

        • @Rakddon: this deal is about matching grey import. So if say Kogan, you would need to wait more then few days…

        • @DvD:

We were talking about price matching over the phone and in store.

Nothing to do with grey item or not.

      • So what exactly do you ask them when you call the number?
        Thanks for the help

        • +3

Just tell them you wish to purchase a particular item using their price beat guarantee. It will help if you have the product number ready from the Officeworks website. They will ask the details of the cheaper price and where you found it. You'll also need to pay for the purchase over the phone. Probably best to tell them early on in the phone call that you wish to collect the item from a particular store, unless of course you want it delivered.

        • @tranter: Ok. Thank you very much

    • matching price nationwide very quickly

This isn't really fair, you can't fault them for this. That's sort of the whole point.

  • Well i guess most outright phone/tablet/computer purchases are going to be cheaper at OWS.

  • +1

Is it bec in majority of cases when the new tarrif import law applies prices of overseas grey purchases would end up just the same or dearer

    • +1

That must have helped, but I don't know their reasoning behind it

  • 230 Upvotes in under 40 minutes! Must be a record!

  • -4

I would be happy even if they drop the 5% price beat.

    • +17

      comment reported lol

  • Good move, Officeworks!

  • This is amazing.

  • Good information. I hope it goes nationwide.

  • Would have to be an identical model number.

Most overseas stock have different model numbers for same products.

So most price match requests won't go through

    • don't believe people who flatly tells you can't be done
they'll most likely try to do it themselves and don't want you competing with them

      • Read comment below

Past conditions still apply such as item must be in stock and same model.

This will push gray importers to import different model numbers where available

        • I think it will exclude quite a lot of products from price beat. But in saying that Officeworks aren't as anal as Harvey Norman, for example, when it comes to identical product numbers.

        • This will push gray importers to import different model numbers where available

Or possibly Officeworks are going to ask for all of their stock to have a different model number, which would be a bad outcome.

    • True

  • +9

    I can confirm with OP.

Price matches no longer need an Australian warranty, but must be from a .com.au website. Past conditions still apply such as item must be in stock and same model.

    It’s a nation-wide change.

Still waiting to hear more info on if eBay, etc. is included. But, for now, Kogan and Dicksmith are definitely in the mix now.

    • +2

      Smart move OW.

They've just opened the flood gates to a tonne of new customers.

      • Or it's just a suicidal move I hope not thou

    • ebay plus members technically get free delivery, so i guess theres an extra $20 you save on the price beat as OW take into account shipping.

      • In the past, you couldn’t price match against exclusive deals, e.g. coupon codes, memberships like Costco, eBay Plus. I would assume it is the same.

      • +2

They can match it with eBay Plus but you need to include the membership cost in the price. Same with Costco.

        • ohhh i see. which makes it all worthless/void. thanks for the knowledge

    • Does it say on the internal memo that it has to be a ".com.au" website?
      No mention of this online.

      • Hmm… I was mistaken earlier (sorry, first time posting) - it's a little unclear at the moment.

They're speculating the differences between .com.au and .com/au (e.g. Kogan) and an "Australian" website (e.g. DWI). It seems almost like a guess-check-confirm basis right now.

For now, Kogan is definitely being price matched - I hope they will clarify the rest of the online retailers soon.

        EDIT: Cheers :)
EDIT: Total noob at using this formatting… lol

        • So DWI wouldn't be price matched? :(

    • -1

Does this mean we forfeit the Officeworks warranty?

      • No, any item you purchase will have normal treatment

        • How do I price match when using afterpay online?

        • @AustriaBargain: I’d be amazed if they price beat and offer AfterPay as well unless they’re beating someone that also offers it. AfterPay take a huge % from the merchant.

        • @AustriaBargain:
Not sure sorry, After pay is only online so I never deal with it

        • just wondering too, if I buy something online, can I go in store and get the price match or is it too late?

        • @AustriaBargain:
The best you could do would be return it in store and then buy it again with a price match

  • Just my thought that OW will do the grey import as well?

    • +2

They already do - just no one seems to notice or care.

      • Because when OW is the importer they, for all legal purposes, become the manufacturer. That is, OW handle the warranty issues for those applicable products.

      • As long as the retailer doesn’t go out of business in your warranty period or the manufacturer doesn’t have some other special treatment for local stock, there’s really no downside to Grey imports, they’re just bypassing artificially high local pricing.

        • That's exactly the difference when it comes to things like phones. I've had my local-stock devices get replaced instead of being repaired. A grey importer will more than likely try and repair it as they don't have the backing of the manufacturer. When the phone is already 1.5 years old, a replacement is certainly better than a repair.

  • This is a definite upvote!! Now hope this can make profitable too for OW.

  • Hopefully in turn Officeworks with their insane buying power puts the squeeze on manufacturers who charge Australians more to begin with.

  • +21

It's time to set up an .au website and list items I want to buy and list items with a fake price!

    • +1

Just make sure the phone number listed is not yours when they call to do a price check. Have a family member on standby haha

      • +8

"hold on a sec, business call", walk out talk to the bloke and then come back in.

  • Well done officeworks

  • +1

ling ling - "dont hate the player baby hate duh game"

  • This is great news! I missed out on the Airpods yesterday from Sydneytec eBay for the mrs… they're out of stock now.

Where's the cheapest place .com.au online store to find Airpods so I can get OW to pricematch and beat it by 5%?

Kogan has them for $209. IT Station seems to be the cheapest I could find that has them in stock for $199 - http://itstation.com.au/index.php?route=product/product&prod…

This site has them for $189 but it isn't a .com.au site (doh) https://www.eglobalcentralau.com/apple-airpods.html?gclid=EA…

    Anyone else looking for these?

    • Yup me too. Umart has it for $195 but its showing preorder on NSW. However, it is in stock in GoldCoast and Sunshine Coast. You could try that brings to about $186

  • Wonder what hardly normal will do to compete? Nothing?

Whinge about the colour of the sky

    • Make prices higher, have a whinge to the government, have a whinge to News Corp, jump on you for an upsale.

      Take your pick.

    • +7

Complain until legislation is introduced to make price matching/beating illegal.

    • Gerry will call everyone and every inanimate object “professionals”

  • Always thought what is stopping someone from creating a quick .com.au website selling phones ect, (no actual stock) for 200 ir 300 bellow market and going in to officeworks and pricematching it. Not hard to do

    • +1

Require ABN/Hosting/Website -.com.au is one of the expensive domains to register.

      • Correct

      • last time I checked ABN cost just $37.00 /yr or $84 for 3 yrs.
And .com.au cost the same as a regular .com domain.
Hosting price may vary but usually start from 3.99/month.

so it's not that expensive to setup a website and get a massive discount, but i'm pretty sure officework would not match the prices from such websites.

        I could be wrong.

Anyone willing this to give a go??

        • +1

Anyone willing this to give a go??

The cost is more than just registering an ABN and hosting a website. You then actually have to run a business.

        • @tranter:

To some extent that's correct as ATO will ring you within couples of months of registering and ask you to provide a proof that you are running a business. If you can't prove it they will cancel your ABN.

But still, u will have time to get the price matched. Once you get the discount of your dream. you can pretty much forget about the ABN and dump the whole setup.

        • You need a functioning website which includes the checkout process.

I guess you could have it functioning properly all the way to the payment stage, without it actually being able to complete the transaction once payment details are entered.

        • +1

          @tranter:
If you're going that far you may as well accept payment and not ship anything.

        • An ABN has always been free, if someone is charging you they're doing you dirty.

Making a fake grey import bargain site would not be expensive, but I doubt it'd last long before OW Head Office excluded you from the price match.

        • @chriso1:
exactly that's the point. you can always accept the payment. It's very easy to link Paypal to a website. So it is doable.

        • +2

Yeah why not steal people's money at the same time. You people are funny.

        • @tranter:

not saying that it's the right thing to do but there are people who will do that.

        • +2

This is blatant theft mate. Get off Ozbargain, we don't need this crap.

        • +1

          @dealhunter4u:

I've had an ABN for years – I've never got a call from the ATO about it.

        • @Easton:

yeah. It used to be like that but apparently if you register these days they will call you.

I registered the last yr, and they rang me asked to provide some proof that i'm running a business.

        • -1

          @The Wololo Wombat:

Surely no one does. And I'm not saying that anyone should do it. Just saying it doable. [@The Wololo Wombat] you don't have to be offensive about it.

        • @dealhunter4u: You said 'anyone one willing to have a go'….

        • @The Wololo Wombat:
          Are in you media ??
If you ARE QUOTING someone then you better quote till the end.
          And
You quoted what I said but u did forget to put "?".

      • Don't necessarily need an ABN but yes there are certain requirements that need to be met.

    • +1

A .com.au requires an ABN, whilst an ABN is not hard to get, it would be traceable to you directly. If OW really wanted to do a little digging, they could find out the website is fake and attempt to hold you liable for fraud. Plus their staff are not stupid (assumption).

    • +3

You could start a website ahly92sgenuinemacbookpros.com.au and sell MBP's for $2 and buy out all of Officeworks stock. you'll be a millionaire by tomorrow!

    • Why .com.au? No mention of .com.au. Just .com can do.

  • my local officeworks are a holes. Will be interesting to see how stores handle this (or not).

    • +2

      order through the 1300 instead

    • +3

Yes much easier to do price beats on their 1300 number.

  • -1

So I could price match this?
    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/apple-13-macbook-pro-mnqg2-29gh…

Was going to use the ifrog.com.au price match. But Kogan is better

    • +3

      call them?

    • Doubt it, because Kogan indicates this is shipped from overseas.

    • +1

Um, the biggest issue isn't the price beat. It's that Kogan one is the 2016 model. It's the model to avoid in general.

You could have got the 2018 model but with 256GB SSD (instead of 512GB) for less from price beating JB Hi Fi deal last weekend. The CPU advantage is significant.

Not sure whether OW stock 512GB 13 inch Macbook Pros though. However, if OW actually still have a 2016 MPB with 512GB, I reckon they will be keen to price beat and get rid of it.

    • Different model

    • You could get officeworks to price match this one

      https://m.catch.com.au/product/apple-13-macbook-pro-2018-sil…

      https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/macbook-pr…

Again it says imported but I thought that was okay now?

  • Anyone actually tried and getting a big ticket grey item from say kogan price matched?

  • +1

    Kogan smashing time!

    • I heard Kogan are in trouble over Refunds and ACL?

  • Does it cover eBay? Would be great if they price-match eBay with the 20% discounts going on. :)

    • +1

I doubt whether they would match Ebay, as it's a marketplace with a lot of small sellers - very easy for an individual to list something and change a price temporarily for the purpose of price matching!

  • Kogan however doesnt have Stock for many items, they drop ship from HOng Kong etc (or have their own warehouse there, doesnt matter). Are you sure that Officeworks will pricematch with them?

If I was Officeworks I wouldnt be, the reason being that Kogans delivery times are often a couple of weeks.

    • There are two issues with the Macbook Pros Kogan have in stock.

      • Most of them are 2017 or 2016 Macbook Pros.
      • Some are 512GB ones (which OW generally don't have in stock).

So, unless you are lucky enough to find an OW staff not checking the model number (unlikely) and the overall discount difference is > 15% (JB had the 10% off and you could do price beat to get additional 5%), not sure whether you will actually be better off.

Furthermore, unless you can really get 2017 or 2016 at a big discount, the multi-threading performance gain on the 2018 models is significant (thanks to AMD, Intel finally doubled the cores on the 8th gen i3/i5 processors).

However, in general, 2016-2018 Macbook Pros all seem to have issues. 2016,2017 - keyboard; 2018 - (initially, CPU thermal throttling and now the T2 chip / bridge OS stability issue).

  • i'll believe it when I see it. Yes I will stand at the register for that exact moment

  • Is this for ALL STORES or just certain ones?

I love buying from Mascot or Bondi store. They price beat as I show them the Australian company. The Pitt St store does not honor price beat. They even ask me to call office works, and if customer service tell them to price beat, they will price beat.

So I called, with the number they give me. The office work on the phone confirm! I put it on loud speak for the manager of PITT ST STORE. They said that the customer service did not order them to price beat. I ask for the customer service to tell them from which the customer service said that it is up to the Store manager to proce beat. They are not alowed to order people. This is goong on circles.

I later go to bondi store and price beat without any problem.

So my question is "Will this new policy be honoured in all of Office Work Stores?"

    • I've also previously had inconsistent price matching between stores. I was knocked back at one but given the PBG at another without fuss in the same day. Largely I have no issue but I have seen problems with it in the past.

    • I've had no issues at Pitt St

  • +1

This is the best thing since sliced bread. Well done Officeworks and thanks OP for sharing.

  • +2

I'm a fan of Officeworks, it's good initiative to generate turnover and keep liquid, considering the sheer number of stores/inventory/staff employed.

Keep our local economy going people!

  • +1

400+ votes for a first post. Not bad.

    • +2

amazing actually, as it's not even technically a deal - no real bargain given :)

i wonder if a non-deal could end up being the most popular deal?

    • +3

Where can I cash them out? :)

      • any of the bitcoin exchanges should do fine

    • Don't see why not. Unless there are exclusions yet to come?

  • So what would be the best produxt/site to get the best deal?

    Kogan?

  • What is the record for the most up vote in OZbargain?

    • This might be the quickest to achieve 500.

  • Kogan has the S9+ Black 64Gb for $1049. If pricematched to OW, it will bring it down to $996.50. Is this the cheapest S9+ Au Stock ever?

    Officeworks

    kogan

    • S9+ from Kogan is a different model (Dual-Sim vs Single Sim), so would likely be denied.

      • damnit! which grey import model is the same as the OW then?

        • I think Vaya might be the cheapest @ $1219 delivered, I think most of the import models are all dual SIM, so it'll be tough to match the cheaper ones.

    • Aust stock right here, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/399047 $999

      Pricematch $949.

Heaps of times where ti was below $999 for eg: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/399047

  • I've always met with a helpful attitude from OW staff when going for a price beat. Naturally, they want to see the price with shipping costs included, which is fair enough.

  • +1

OP, when is this scheduled to commence? or is already live now?

    • +3

      Yesterday!

      • -1

So how come we didn't know till today? LOL

        • The update was posted at approx. 5:30pm yesterday, so I'd assume no one saw it until this morning.

      • I price matched something yesterday and they were doing their normal checks

  • I have successfully price-matched to Ebay via the phone before.

    • now you tell us????

      • +2

Have posted about it previously in a relevant deal.

  • +1

Good luck with this, I Can't even get them to match a physical store. Had to escalate to a manager 3 times. Staff will make up any excuse. I'm done with officeworks. Used to love their service now it's awful with rude as staff.

  • +1

Friend just spoke to Officeworks about the Nokia 8 and they said:
"because the nokia 8 says "in house warranty" they can't price match it. It would need a warranty that you send to Nokia for them to price match it"

So either they didn't get the memo…

    • +1

I mean this only came to light yesterday. id do the click and collect option via 1300 Office as others are suggesting to see if that gets it over the line.

      • Thanks for the tip, friend called and arranged the price-match against DWI. Perfect.

  • To add to this, I have now found with the price match I did yesterday, they no longer care if the price match is local or not.

In my case, I'm in Melbourne and the store to match was in Bendigo. Nothing added for delivery though that wasn't an option anyway.

  • This one on Airpodswould have been worth it!

  • hmmm… unfortunately OW don’t do 4k UHD bluray players otherwise i will be there in a jiffy….

  • Anyone got any idea on how to get the macbook pro 2017 with this price beat at a good price?

  • This is overwhelming, can someone chuck in a few phone examples/deals. Thanks

    • +1

It's still a live and dangerous creature. Its hideous tentacles still trap many Ozbargainers daily.

  • +1

now just need OW to match coupon codes

  • Can I know where does it say on their website?

    • that is only finding on OW website.

      https://www.officeworks.com.au/information/policies/price-be…

      What about online stores?
Our Price Beat Guarantee includes products you find online - as long as the item is identical and in stock. When assessing the PBG from online stores we also take into account the added cost of delivery to your location (if any). If the identical, in stock product can be purchased and delivered to your location via an online store for a total price lower than the one we are offering, we will beat that total price by 5%.

      no clear enough.

  • Just checked with Elizabeth St Melbourne Officeworks, they rejected my request saying Dicksmith and Kogan are online stores, not 'real' stores and they have grey stock etc etc..

    • +2

There is a shop that used to be dick Smith with all the logos still there and is no longer used near my place

You could argue it's a physical store

    • +7

Give it some time for the employees to learn the new policy. Half of them probably didn't even open their inbox yet.

      • That's what I figured too, didn't wanna argue so I just left. Will check in a few days time.. cheers

  • Just went there yesterday to buy padded mail envelope. Their prices are highly inflated. Padded envelope was $1.14 for a piece, elsewhere it is just $0.22 if buy in bulk of 20 pieces. Officeworks don’t sell in bulk, making profit of 500%.

    • +1

Their prices are highly inflated. Padded envelope was $1.14 for a piece, elsewhere it is just $0.22 if buy in bulk of 20 pieces. Officeworks don’t sell in bulk, making profit of 500%.

A little unfair calling all their prices highly inflated based on the price of 1 item compared to a bulk purchase of a similar item presumably of a different brand, elsewhere. In any case, something has to pay for the rental of the large premises and car park, all that staff, price matching, etc.

  • +5

So has anyone got anything successfully price matched with the new policy? Seeing a lot of queries but no confirmations?

    • Price matched/beat Kogan on an Apple Pencil this morning - not the cheapest deal ever ($145 vs $144 > $136.80) but it did work. Kogan sells these as 'direct import'. NSW/Newcastle area.

  • Anyone tried price matching Aussie ebay sellers? if so would they match after applying any of the 20%, 10% discount codes going on right now ?

    • +2

They still don't match coupon codes as per the T&C's.

    • +1

OW will not match any discount codes.

  • Smart move Officeworks now you know how businesses works and will make huge profit.

For starters we now can match AirPods, iPhone, macs and the list goes on!!!

  • Seriously, about time someone gave Kogan a run for their money.

  • -3

1000 upvotes, yet no relevant deals or successful price-matches.

    How about this? Macbook Air(https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/apple-13-macbook-air-128gb-18gh…)

Price beat at officeworks for 1139$

    Iphone X - 1413$ (Price beat kogan)

    • You, wildweasel, are the hero we need.

  • +1

When assessing the PBG from online stores we also take into account the added cost of delivery to your location (if any)

So if Kogan are selling at $1000 + $20 delivery you wont get it for $950 it would be $969

  • Does this mean they will support Amazon which now has local warehouses?

    It comes with .com.au

    • Amazon Australia was fine but I believe it had to be their official listing, not a third party (like how we don't do ebay)

      • Just got knocked back at my local OW on a price match against an Amazon AU item (fulfilled by Amazon). Reason given was that Amazon is a seller, not a reseller, and hence they have no way of knowing where Amazon got their stock from (even though it was the same exact model and part number).

  • The question is have all your staff been trained and informed about this? I had come across one that didn't even want to price match HN or TGG.

    • That's going to be mostly on the managers responsibility to inform the staff, so hopefully they are on it

      • -2

It sucks then. Most of the managers are like "I am the manager and I make my own store rules". Good luck to OW letting those store managers to bend and make their own rules.

      • Went to the Pitt St OW on weekend to price beat an iPhone 8 red from Dicksmith but the guy said they couldn't beat it cause Dicksmith was a liquidation store, what the…? How do you fight this?

        • Haha… What an excuse.

Phone the hotline and pick it up in store.
          Talk to a manager.
Get a female staff member that actually knows what their talking about.

I've had no issues with this store.

  • +2

    Wow.

They still going to offer AU warranty at grey import prices?

This is going to hurt them alot. Though it will generate a lot of sales.

Past conditions still apply such as item must be in stock and same model.

This can be interpreted in a number of ways though. If the grey phone has no B28 and has a slightly different part number is it still "same model"? Does the color still have to match? Some overseas colors are not available here.

    • Yeah the only sure items are ones that have the exact same model for everything, so products that sell the same global model everywhere will be easy, products that change for lots of regions still probably not get matched.

      • Most electronics have different model numbers based on regions

Some electronics have AU at the end of model numbers to specify Aussie stock.

So it's going to be very hard to find an exact model number since most gray imports come from Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore

        • Yeah unfortunately some items seem to be like that, the easiest to Price-beat would be Apple products which often are identical I think, and items like speakers/keyboards/smartwatches which are mostly identical around the globe.

        • +1

          @1112223334:
Not all keyboards are the same, different regions use different layouts, shorter delete key etc so different model #

        • @Godric:
          Yeah good point

      • I actually don't know of too many grey import sellers who also sell AU stock. And if they do sell AU stock, it will be more expensive already.

  • 1112223334 for PM!

Bought a Huawei nova 3e from GG a few days ago at $399. Now at officeworks at $375. Submitted a claim with GG, got $28.80 in store credit within minutes. Would not have checked OW without this deal. Thanks OP!

    • Glad I could help :)

    • +1

How is that related to this price match deal? People voting plus for unrelated deals.

  • +1

This is great, thanks OP! Price matched a Kogan item today no problems.

    • +1

Doesn't have the .au url but it would still be worth calling 1300 OFFICE number to see if they allow it on order.

      • It has the /au same as if you go to Apple au website you will see only /au instead of .au

        • Kogan has /au at the end as well

        • @tight-ass:

Really?? Well price matching just got harder then…

        • +3

          @KaptnKaos:
ATM Kogan is definitely fine to price-beat so it looks like the .com.au is not a hard rule

    • +1

let us know how u go ty

  • Any samsung S9 deal?

  • I'd rather buy from OW rather than Kogan/DS any day, so this could be useful to me…

    • +1

Yep, it’s a no brainer for me.

  • My only price beat experience few years ago with OW was not pleasing at all.

Asked for a price beat on an external hard drive at OW Joondalup while it was not on discount in store.
The staff went away and come back to me after around 5 minutes saying the price was updated in their computer system and refuse to price beat.

At that time if OW awared a competitive price that would influence them, they should adjust it in store instantly. I told the staff the way they refuse the price beat was too dodgy then I left.

After that, I never shop with OW unless I need some stationary in urgent

    • I have used price beat a couple of times at different stores but my experience was different to yours. Got it done without any issues.

    • +3

would be quicker and easier for you to call in their central services, price beat and select store to pick up.

I find the staffs' willingness to price beat vary from store to store, and I find that their central service is more accomodating.

  • I don't shop much @ OW, what would you pick up from there to make this new condition beneficial?

    • +1

OP put in some examples: Dwi Kogan Becextech

Reasons that you would pick up from OW is: (1) no need to wait for days (if not weeks) (2) less likely to have box slightly damaged (3) Apple / Samsung less likely to whinge about grey imports and reduce the warranty period (4) proper money back guarantee within 14? days

It will still depend on the staff to decide whether to honour this or play dumb and continue to use existing rules.

      • 3 points per dollar on your AMEX Plat Edge too

    Do they price match Ebay?

  • @OP or any OW Employee

Do you think Office works will price match this - https://www.amazon.com/Fitbit-Smartwatch-Silver-Aluminium-In…

  • -5

All these stores may move items to .com from .com.au to avoid OW price beat
OW should have included .com domain for stores that own .com.au domain as well

    • I doubt they'll do that somehow. And OW didn't say anything about the tld needing to be .com.au

  • What's the highest number of upvotes for a posted deal I wonder…this must be right up there.

  • great

  • Can't up vote, but thank you OP!
    Bring in the competition!

  • +2

finally OW are in real competition now! Good post op, soon I will be seeing more OzBargainers come to Officeworks with their phones on hand and arguing the new price match policy ;)

Time to buy a new phone from Officeworks.

Their range of Android phones is pretty pathetic.

  • +12

What I have been told by my store manager is that regardless of warranty, we will match imports as long as it's the same product. The rest stays the same.

He didn't mention anything about Australian websites although it makes sense that it would be through Australian vendors that are importing the items as previously mentioned.

Just thought I'd chime in and tell you all what I've been told. I was also told that we don't tell customers, however I knew it would pop up here haha.

  • I wonder if this is to counteract the common excuse I found for declining the price match - not the same return policy if change your mind or faulty?

  • +2

Just had a chat to them regarding a phone at Kogan, accessible via kogan.com.au.
They declined the pricematch because it was a direct import from HK.
OW advised that the item has to be stock in Australia

  • Will Officeworks price beat eBay as well?

  • I went to Officeworks Northmead 2151 today with the vision of purchasing a samsung galaxy s8. Tried to match kogan and bexextech but left emptihanded because the assistant refused to match these stores as they did not offer manufacturers warranty. does anyone know the cheapest aus stock with manufacturers warranty :')

    • What's probably happened is the news hasn't gotten out to all the people working here. My managers haven't informed me yet of the change, but I'll be sure to ask them about it next shift.

You'd be best off contacting head office on the 1300-OFFICE number, they probably have a better idea of what's going on with new policy, and should be able to match it without much hassles. I haven't personally tried it myself, but by looking at this thread it looks like a few people have done it with relative ease.

      • would it be possible to price match this product to the 64gb s8 at officeworks once managers have a clear idea about the change to policy? https://www.becextech.com.au/catalog/sams8dual64gblk-prt-p-8…

        thanks for your assistance!

        • TBH I'm not too sure about that one. From what I've read on this forum post I would probably just put it through for you, but it it's a dual sim being a different model it technically might be exempt. Again, I haven't been briefed by my manager as to what I can or can't match regarding this sort of thing, but give head office a call and they will know for certain.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help to you.

  • Thank you for your post , price matched with shopping square , 50% discount ow price $34 got it for $16

  • Highest ever plus post?

My question is is the manager ever trained properly? Why are they so inconsistent between stores? It's not like they're the franchisee right?

    • Yes, it's not as if it's coming out of their own wallets. They don't care if they make a sale or not.

  • I don't understand this post, is doesn't say anywhere it can be a grey import. and it still says "Not excluded from the PBG (see below)"

This deal is off the charts

    • Very impressive.

Just a quick update, incase no one has posted it yet. An internal post yesterday stated, products need to be:
    - In stock (add to cart and checkout)
    - identical model and specs, brand new,
    - and Australian deliverable (price in $AUD including delivery costs).

Other exclusions still apply such as: cashback offers and coupon codes.

    • Can it be direct import or does it have to be in stock in Australia?

      • When I called OW HQ they informed me that a direct import does not qualify. Had to be physically in stock in Australia.

      • In stock (add to cart and checkout)

So… like show them the checkout out page? Can it be a screenshot?

      • The salesperson will verify themselves that the item can be added to cart and processed in checkout.

    • +1

If it's identical, it can't be a grey import surely

      • Why not? There are many grey import products that are identical to local products.

        • +1

It depends how pedantic they get. eg. anything mains powered, or with power supply, might be out on a technicality if the import doesn't have an AU plug.

But even then there would still be plenty of imports identical to local.

        • +1

If it's identical it wouldn't be a grey import.

          Life is quite average.

Nice mate, huge respect for engineers. Your math skills are something to be admired.

  • Does this work on online orders?

I have no OW near me for an hour radius well honestly no major shops besides Bunnings hehe lol.

But if they can price match some online stuff for delivery then this might be useful for me if I need a new printer or printer ink or maybe some new headset or something.

    • Yes you can call 1300 OFFICE (633 423) and price match over the phone, delivery will be free over $55, otherwise $5 additional I believe.

      • Free delivery over $55? and only $5 delivery for under $55? Are you sure about this? this seems too good to be true.

Normally delivery starts at around $7 from my experience unless it is ebay free postage.

        • https://www.officeworks.com.au/information/policies/delivery… You can enter your postcode to find out delivery charges.

I went into an OW store on Friday night and confirmed it does not need to be from a ".com.au" address, as long as the model number is the same you can then price match.

    • +4

nice what did you price match?

    • as long as the model number is the same you can then price match.

Its always been that way though.

    • Cañ I ask which store it was ? Might help us..Thanks

  • Just picked up a Note 9 price matched with becextech.

    • +1

I thought Becextech are all dual sim, so are different ?

      • Was thinking the same thing… All of their Note 9's are Dual Sim.

Hooligan543 must have gotten a 'clever' sales assistant at Officeworks.

    • Did you get a price beat, or a price match?

      • Officeworks only does price beat, they changed the name which is confusing, but it should always be 5% of the competitions price.

  • HELP? - is this the cheapest place to price match Apple iPhone 7 128GB Black ? https://www.becextech.com.au/catalog/iphone7128gbblck-ins-p-…

I having troubles, if anyone can find a (.com) or any website thats cheaper asap? that would so appreciated

as the stocks of these becoming very low

  • +1

I was able to price beat iphone 8 64GB from Kogan by 5% over the phone yesterday, and get it delivered to a nearby store today. No trouble with 1300 OFFICE customer care!

    • Did the invoice from officeworks have your personal details?

      • it has my name and address which i've used as the delivery address in officeworks account, thats it. I believe that's enough to claim GST (if that's your intentions just like mine)

        • Thanks, yes that's my intention.

  • Does this include eBay when they are having their 20% off sales?
I need a new modem would be about $60 cheaper on eBay at the moment.

    • Can't price-beat eBay

      • Thanks i went down and asked and was informed the same. They also couldn't match the bonus deal i asked them about at Wireless 1

  • The staff at officeworks have not been trained on this change in some locations. When I arrived, the staff had no idea that their policy changed and I was told that they 'dont match grey imports' After I showed them the difference in wording in their policy, and after about 20 minutes, they eventually gave me a discount off Kogan for the Wunderboom!

PS: Can we get an aggregated list of good Grey Import websites? :D

  • I feel that OW is so inconsistent in how they do price match on anything other than a small discount (ie. you have to fight tooth and nail for it with the manager) that I'd rather not buy from OW in the first place and get it from the merchant who was willing to do it for the price in the first place.

(yes I'm aware OW is probably safer and easier but the staff can frustrate me greatly)

  • Tried calling OW Call centre today to see if they could price match Gear S3 Frontier smartwatch.

Grey sellers like eGlobalCentreAU are selling the watch for $307. The lady over the phone said they can only price match products that are stocked in Australia. So no Grey imports. She said although the model# was identical they can't match grey stock.

Kind of misleading if you ask me!

    • I called them today using the OW office number to price beat their Nokia 8 advertised as $548 on their website. I was able to price beat it with one advertised on eGlobalCentreAU for $416. Final price i paid was around $396. I called the office number 2 weeks ago and could not get the discount and they said that they could not price match imports due to not having the same warranty policy. Maybe it was because the policy just came out at that time and not everyone at OW are on the same page.

    • Call again

Where's best to use to get pricing to match? I want to grab the iPhone XS 64gb!

  • I just tried price matching the Samsung gear 3 from kogan and they refused.

  • +1

Got rejected on an iPhone X. According to the cashier, grey imported stock does not count even if it’s the same model number because the charger won’t be an AU plug therefore it’s not identical inclusions. I asked her to show me where it says it’s not an AU plug and she said “oh all overseas stock is like that”. After 10 minutes of arguing she agreed to take my number and get on to her regional manager and let me know the outcome 🙄

  • Failed to pricematch against Catch.com.au for a Nokia 7 plus.

  • officworks need clear indication on website on their grey import new policy, as i visited store and called their customer service, they confirm they wont match grey/imported stock.

  • How did I miss this? It's time to put this to use. :)

Edit: OK, I should have read the comments before I've made mine. Looks like price-matching isn't that easy still.

  • Competitor’s website products must be shipped from Australia apparently.

  • Tried to call Officeworks, spoke to team leader - refused to price match Dick Smith/Kogan etc.

Reason - item (Macbook Air) has MQD32X/A as part number - other websites have MQD32X (international model, not australian) i.e. "not identical"

  • can you still do the price beat if the item isnt in stock at the store?

  • Did a pricematch for a Samsung Galaxy Note 9 128gb from becextech

Brought a print out of the website:
    https://www.becextech.com.au/catalog/samnote9dual128gbblk-pr…

(My print out had a price of $1029 but when I got to OW the price went up to $1074. Still overall happy though)

Showed the print out to the lady at the cashier and she goes to check the website on her computer. She gets help from another OW member and comes back to me saying they can't price match it because it is a grey unit and the warranty is different. I asked them about their new policy and she still insists that it is a grey unit and the model number is different and cannot price match. I then asked where on the becextech website that shows it is a grey unit. (becextech also does not indicate the model just the actual name "Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Dual SIM 128GB 4G LTE Smartphone Midnight Black". She then goes and calls a manager on her headset. She said that she was just concerned because of the price difference $1247 vs $1074. So I just waited patiently and never looked or acted annoyed or whatever. I just waited smiling while she was talking to her manager on the headset. While her manager was still checking the lady just kept saying that it is a grey unit yadda yadda. So after about 10 minutes I hear her asking if they have a unit in stock and if the manager can bring it out. SUCCESS. So she goes on saying that they normally don't pricematch from becextech but they will just this once. (probably just their normal spiel after pricematching but not really sure) They added $30 for shipping cost which brought the total to $1103.95 and then they have to beat the price by 5% which brought the grand total to $1048.75 which I was very happy to pay. Total Price match savings: $198.25

Thanks to this thread and the OP. It is good to have this knowledge when going for a price match at OW.

But I still am not really sure of the reason why it was allowed. Was it because There was no model number on the becextech website so they could not confirm that it is a different model. Is it because I was being nice and they really just made this one exception? (The lady did look annoyed though when the manager actually allowed the price match lol)

They do zipmoney instore. Afterpay as well but not for anything over $1000. (I don't think you can do a price match for online purchases, has to be instore)

Sorry for the long post, just wanted to share this as soon as I got home. Now time to unbox my new Note 9 :)

  • Just wondering OfficeWorks price match with Newegg ?

  • +1

Tried to beat eglobalcentralAU and they refused. Both in store and online. Yet other people have success.. go figure. I just think OW is a crappy business who make it too hard to do anything, why advertise a policy like this if you aren't going to honour it. Seems like some staff are more helpful than others, some of them are ignorant or lack training I think. If anyone on here works at OW and wants to help me out please PM me.

  • Don't bother. Just tried with Officeworks Trinity Gardens and they said they don't price match grey stock.

  • Officeworks refused to match Becextech for an iPhone for me :(

    • My guess is the fact that it's probably compatible with different frequency bands compared to Australian stock is enough to not make them 'identical'.

  • +1

I'm guessing this excludes all grey import mobile phones (eg dual SIM on the grey import, but single SIM on Australian stock, etc)?
