    • +19

Nope - thats why it costs $670 to go from 4GB/128 to 8GB/256

    • +1

      Thanks for the information.

  • It says the coupon code is PSURFACE instead of PMSURFACE on the page.

    • +6

Saw that. eBay has it wrong on the creative. Correct code is definitely PMSURFACE.

      • +1

        Thank you for the clarification!

      • +14

Did you create this code? PMS-UR-FACE, it's either genius of you or ebay hates microsoft :)

        • +11

All good - I checked the T&Cs and it only lasts a couple of days.

        • +2

Would have been better if it was PMSURFARSE

    • It says PMSURFACE on the item page

Way overpriced still for dual core 7th gen.

    • +2

This is what I thought. The specs don't even show this clearly on the ebay page, which makes me wonder if it's intentional to lure in gullible people.

      • I am one of those gullible people who desperate need good advice from the Ozbargain community.
Need a laptop for work, mainly use it to show presentations and internet while meeting clients at their homes. Would like something loading fast and nice screen, don't want too small screen size as portability is not a huge issue for me. Prefer it under $1200 but can stretch budget for a better value machine.
Thanks in advance for all the advice.

        • +1

Get a Lenovo ThinkPad E480. Much more upgradable, 8th gen quad core and cheaper.

        • Not sure why you've been negged for your post. It's not a bad laptop for the usage scenario you've specified, but it probably isn't just value for your money. Because I'm sure that you could search for, and find a laptop with similar or better specifications for less money. As another poster has pointed out above, the Thinkpad E480 is a great choice as an example.

        • Microsoft Surface Laptop i5/8/256 - Cobalt Blue. With 20% off you can get it by $1335. Good device and excellent value.

          • @Al123: Thanks for all for the advices, will have a look at Lenovo.

    • +1

You pay a premium for slim form factors.

  • +3

    I want one….. but I dont need one…

    these bargains are killing me!

    • You should get a 2nd hand XPS

  • +2

I have Surface pro 4, m3, 4GB 128GB, OK for general use on the road, browsing, email, etc.

Still looking for a good and cheap way to convert it like a laptop to use it when seating on sofa.

  • +2

    They are run-out models

  • +22

    4GB RAM in 2018?
    128GB Storage in 2018?

Pretty sure my phone has more than this.

    • We talking about the Pixel 3? :p

      • +5

        Note 9 I got 8G ram & 512G storage , mmm

        • Yeahhhh note 9!!! Woo hoo!!

        • +7

And I'm that phone is more expensive that this laptop…

          • +4

            @not4us: Should read:
"And I'm sure that phone is more expensive than this laptop…"

  • +2

Damn almost bought (as I’m in the market to buy 2 laptops for using Adobe InDesign & uploading media online) then realised 4gb ram & 128gb ssd :(

  • Apologies in advance for asking a dumb question. MS Surface i5/4gb/128 or Ipad 2018? Need mainly to watch Youtube/Netflix while travelling and rare use of laptop for basic usage (browsing/emails only). Can this work as a proper laptop without buying the keyboard and mouse? Need to buy a gift for wife for our anniversary. Please help!

    • If you want something like a tablet/phone, iPad is better my experience Surface is more like a laptop with touch screen.

      • Just realized this is a proper laptop instead of a tablet that can turn into laptop.

        • For some reason touch screen experience on Surface still not as good as on phone or tablet.

      • -3

Why limit yourself to iOS Crapstore?

    • +2

For your need, probably look into iPad / Surface Go, i.e. IOS vs Windows.

      • Thanks. Will do mate

    • Samsung Tab S is damn gorgeous and you won't be stuck in iOS jail.

      • +1

        It would be except -
        1. the apps for Android tablets are universally bad
        2. that Samsung will totally forget that they launched this in 6 months time and you will be crying for updates after
        3. that it has last year's Android hardware which is slower than Android's current hardware which in turn is slower than Apple's last year hardware
        4. that it also comes with Samsung's crap software with silly half baked half written features that do not work as advertised.

In short a complete and utter waste of money. I would much rather prefer being in jail with a product that works and will reliably work and update for the next 4 years atleast. My 2 cents.

        • Until you break the screen then the cost of the repair will be the same as buying a Samsung tab

          • +1

@jackwoz: And you cannot break the screen on Samsung tab? Fact is a repaired iPad will be as good as new while a repaired Samsung tab will still be as useless.

            • @dealsucker: Ive heard its expensive to repair Apple stuff compared to androids (correct me if im wrong). This is what im referring to. To be honest I cant stand the rip off Apple ecosystem and would much prefer anything android over it.

        • +1

To be honest that is my exact experience with two iPads I have had in the past (except with updates; Android tablets do get forgotten about much more quickly by the manufacturer).

          • @ensanguined: Yes this is true, but to be honest nothing has been a game changer from changing from android 7 to 8 to 9. Some small nice features get added but the nuts and bolts are the same, much like IOS

    • +1

If you only need it for browsing etc then get a chromebook. No need to get something expensive

  • The Apple pricing of the Microsoft world

I remember when the first Gen i5 Surfaces went on special at $500… Those were the days…

      • +1

Can’t compare the first gen to these, they were terrible prototypes and no one wanted them.

        • Care to elaborate? I have one of the first gen Surface Pro and find it great and quite reliable.

    • Why not when it works well for Apple;)

  • How much are they normally?

    • +2

      20% more

      • +14

        No, 25% more.

DP (discount price) = OP (original price) - 20% x OP = 0.8 OP, so
        OP = DP / 0.8 = 1.25 x DP = DP + 25% x DP

For example, take OP = $1000, so DP = $800.

        25% x DP = $200, and 20% x DP = $160
        DP + 25% x DP = $1000 = OP — OP is 25% more than DP, but 20% off OP is DP.
        DP + 20% x DP = $960 — 20% more of DP is not OP.

    Can they run android?

    • Not sure what you mean here. These are Windows 10 laptops.

      • Sorry mean can it run dual boot - I've seen some laptops run windows and you can also load up android. I need a laptop that can do bot. I've seen them advertised elsewhere so they do exist

        • There's a few dual boot chinese tablets around but they tend to be fairly hit and miss, buggy and short life span, if you get over a year out of them you're doing well, and they have basically no warranty support once your Paypal protection expires…

          • +1

@FLICKIT: OK thanks don't know much about it - I did see an ASUS laptop advertised on ebay that was a normal laptop but ran Windows 10 and android.

        • There are dual boot tablets but they run Atom CPUs which are more than fine for Android but laggy in Windows. Their RAM ranges from 2GB to 4GB, which is not enough for Windows.

    • Can it run crysis?

  • +4

These are the 7th gen CPUs - significantly slower as dual core instead of quad core.

Seems a good price but keep in mind the significant difference in 7th VS 8th gen processors from intel.

    • +1

      This ^
Better to get 8th gen quad core processors.

  • Another it newbie question.

I use it to browse a lot and write a lot of emails and word docs

Don't do video editing, photo shop,

I have maybe 10 tabs open at most.
The Max load might be 10 tabs, word open, and Spotify open.

Found detachable kb not too good for long typing sessions. Like a solid kb

    Will this suffice?

    • Yeeees

    • +1

I've been using a Surface Pro 3 (with 4GB RAM) for nearly 3 years now in a similar way to how you described above, and I find that 4GB RAM is more than enough for that. I also think that the detachable keyboard didn't feel as sturdy/comfortable when typing for long periods of time, so I would hope the sturdier Surface Laptop keyboard should make typing more comfortable.

      • are you my long lost twin ??

    • +1

Should be perfectly fine imo. The 4GB of RAM issue is exaggerated. With a SSD and i5, you won't have a problem. These seem pretty well built too with high res screen. I doubt you will find anything of similar quality at this price.

    • +3

Can you please clarify exactly what you mean?

      • +1

Can you please clarify exactly what you mean?

I'm not saying I agree with him, but this is how I interpreted it.
You are popular here on OzBargain.

This is hilarious! Anyone else that posts the 4gb ram model on this platform gets rammed.

He's saying that if someone else posted a deal with 4GB of RAM, a lot of people would post comments like this:
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/412206#comment-6517901 (but probably with some exaggerated specific issues like "4GB of RAM can barely run 3 tabs in chrome").

But he thinks that because you're popular, nobody is doing this (He missed my comment and the one below mine further up).

The "gets rammed" pun at the end worked on me though, I laughed a bit (that's why I +'d him, not because I agree with him).

  • $800 for i5 4GB 128GB
    Or
    $1470 for i7 8GB 256GB

    • TBH because they are not upgradeable, I would be buying the one that exceeds your expectations today.

      • Yeah got the i7.

    • im no it expert but I doubt judt because a new version is released, the old version suddenly becomes useless or websites for browsing become doubly as complicated

If the price is reflected, I am more than happy to buy an old model

    • Yes as per a google search of the model number.

These are gen 1 which have significantly slower processors (dual core, not quad core)

  • Be warned that Surfaces will sometimes not wake up when required. It's a known issue, aonething to do with putting it into sleep mode instead of turning it fully off. I wouldn't use one even if it was a gift.

    • +1

Turning off Fast Boot normally fixes it in power options. The other issue is that the power button/lid close is normally set to hibernate by default.

    • -1

That's a minor issue that was overcome wayback. Snap off the keyboard and wipe the connection pins and contacts with a clean tissue, refit keyboard: problem solved.

  • +3

Beware that the fabric keyboard on this one gets dirty pretty quick and you cannot replace it (what were they thinking!)

  • +1

Make sure you upgrade to Windows 10 Pro for free.
