    No commbank, sad

    • +8

Adds insult to injury after losing my CBA AMEX card as of today ☹️ The Mastercard will be gone as soon as I can refinance my home loan. Pathetic that the last time they offered a bonus was June 2017.

      • -1

Last time I transferred from cba rewards I still received the bonus even though they weren’t listed by velocity as part of the deal

        • +1

I personally wouldn’t risk doing that, otherwise I won’t have a leg to stand on if it doesn’t work. I’ll only transfer without a bonus if I need to use Velocity points for something ASAP.

      • thinking of jumping on the same boat.. how much is it to get out of the wealth package and onto another bank?

        • I’ve got part of my loan fixed until March so wasn’t planning on looking around until then.

  • easy tasks

  • -2

No ANZ bonus? Bloody Royal Commission.

    • ANZ is on the list, but you may be sarcastic?
Edit: may be referring to the on top of bonus.

    • +3

I think ANZ usually announces their additional bonus a few days after Velocity announces the transfer bonus?

      • yeah, just waiting for that, it will come…..

    • +3

ANZ have already announced their bonus. It's an additional 15%.

      • Yoohoo, cheers for the info!

    • Usually around May I think

  • +5

Last decent throw of the dice for those moving their velocity points across to Krisflyer

    https://flighthacks.com.au/velocity-to-singapore-airlines-kr…

    • Thanks! Is this a really good deal? Should I transfer my 100k points from Citibank to velocity then KrisFlyer ? Or are there usually better deals?

      • Singapore business class is very good value on points, which is the reason most people transfer points to KrisFlyer. Do a few searches on Virgin + Singapore Air for award flights you're interested in to see how they compare. If you plan far enough ahead there is plenty of availability on both

      • +1

Could you transfer points to Krisflyer from velocity now, then back again next year for a ~15% increase in points?

        • +3

No. The transfer rate between Velocity and Krisflyer is 1.35:1 at the moment, and will change to 1.55:1 at the start of next year. So you would lose a lot of points if you were to do this.

        • +2

No. You currently transfer 1.35 points from one account to arrive at 1 point in your other account. That will soon raise to 1.55 points. YOU WILL NEVER WIN. It's just that you lose less (especially with a 15% bonus) before the devaluation on 1 Jan.

    • Yep, exactly. Must better availability via KF, I've booked first class and business on KF without issue in the past couple of years.

Recently been booking Star Alliance flights through my KF points (Air Canada mostly so far), it is a pain!!

    • Nice, I love Singapore air so will definitely transfer to Kris next year

      • If you are talking about transferring Velocity points to KF, you might want to do it this year before the devaluation.

        • Oh, I thought the velocity to Kris conversion was changing from 1:1.35 to 1:1.55? Am I looking at it wrong?

          • @greater mimic: Yes, that ratio is the wrong way around, likely because it is a somewhat confusing system - you get the same ratio (currently 1.35:1) going to KF from Velocity, as well as from KF to Velocity.

For example, at the moment 135 Velocity points transferred to KF would get you 100 KF points or 135 KF transferred to Velocity gets you 100 Velocity. Next year you will need to transfer 155 Velocity points to KF to get 100 KF points, or 155 KF to get 100 Velocity.

            • @djkelly69: Oooh right I see now, thanks for explaining that. In that case I better do the conversion soon.

Do kris points representative good value as opposed to velocity? I've never used them before

              • @greater mimic: I guess generally if you are using the points for international flights, Krisflyer has good value business class award seats and services more destinations than Velocity.

  • damn no st george..

  • Am I missing something, can anyone tell me exactly why I would move all my points to Velocity?

Correct me if I'm wrong but my Flybuys are be cashed in for gift cards etc, but Velocity are only good for plane tickets?

edit: Also I rarely fly anywhere lol

    • +1

If you're not planning a trip in the next year or so then don't transfer. Frequent Flyer points are only really worth redeeming on award flights, but you need to plan 6+ months ahead

  • No Westpac?

  • Normally Qantas isn't too far behind with their own promotion when Velocity launches one…

  • I'm new to points and have about 100k flybuys from the last 2 months. Is velocity better than flybuys?
    EDIT: NVM saw post above

    • 100k flybuys for 2 months what!

      • I got 96,000 in 3 months, not hard to do when you get offered 8,000 for a $200 purchase.

      • Yo yeah I always go for the bonus points. But it's almost mostly because I signed up for a Coles Rewards Mastercard also, so get FBs on everything.

  • +4

Don't transfer from Flybuys to Velocity if you are just planning to turn points into giftcards. Even with the 15% bonus you will come out significantly worse off (speaking from experience). Only transfer if you are planning to use the points for flights/upgrades.

  • I'm thinking about a holiday to a nearby tropical destination with a 4 yr old and a nearly 7 year old. Maybe something like Bali etc - can anyone suggest a good program to get good tickets for the flights? I've got about 280k of amex points….

    • Just pay cash for tickets if you're going to go economic seats.

    • Yep, don't waste points on economy flights, its way better to redeem business class with the points down the track if you have enough. You are better to just wait for cheap deals on flights to Bali, they can be almost as cheap as the money they charge in fees when you book an awards flight. There is regularly $200 each way for flights deals.

Bali is great with kids, nannies are often excellent (the ones we have had have been) and the hotels often have good kids clubs. For cheap in Seminyak I recommend the new Trans resort that has a great kids club. Just stay away from Kuta and Legian (and drunk Aussies).

Waterbom is great, the Bali Zoo is great.

  • incase anyone is wondering, if your end result is Kris Flyer then this makes it better vale to go ANZ > Velocity > KF (prior to the Jan changes, anyway)

    • I think it is better to go ANZ VFF KF without the promo anyway.

      3 - 1 ANZ to KF
      2 - 1 ANZ to VFF
      1.35 - 1 VFF to KF

      • +1

        To put it another way,

1 ANZ point direct to KF is 0.33 KF points.
1 ANZ point through VFF to KF is 0.37 KF points.
With 30% bonus, 1 ANZ point through VFF to KF is 0.48 KF points.

        After 1 Jan 2019,

1 ANZ point through VFF to KF is 0.32 KF points.
With 30% bonus, 1 ANZ point through VFF to KF is 0.42 KF points.

Still more worth it to go through VFF if you can wait for the bonus periods to come around.

  • Did they have 30-35% transfer bonus last year or so?

    • Only ANZ, in May this year, up to 50%.

  • hmmm, going through Citibank and nothing telling me about the 15% bonus, and, when selecting how many points to transfer it tells me 40,958 = 20,299.

Not sure whether to proceed and assume it will happen in the process, or wait to see if their system updates.

    • +1

Velocity give you the bonus, not your bank.

    • +1

The bonus points will show up in your velocity account, even if Citibank doesn't advertise the bonus. Done this transfer many times before.

  • Awesome timing, was waiting for this for my 130K FB points

    • +2

Wow. You have 130k FaceBook points 🐏

      • He wins the internet for today, today only. Tomorrow your points revert to 0

  • Do these kind of deals pop up a fair bit?

I only have 4k ANZ Rewards points and don't need the velocity points, so I'm happy to wait if these kind of deals are common.

    • Usually twice a year, so just wait for the next one.

ANZ usually offer their own point transfer bonus at the same time too

      • Which will be in May

        • Just once a year? I missed this years one… which I believe was 50%? Hoping they offer it again before may.

          • @Pab23q: If it doesn't happen this month then it probably wont happen again before May.

  • Boo no Altitude Rewards again :(

  • +4

Might just mention in case anyone didn't hear that Velocity are introducing carrier charges for all reward bookings made from 1 Jan 2019 - details here. This is addition to the KF changes detailed above.

This does put it in-line with QFF, but may be something to consider.

  • is it worth it to transfer my amex point to velocity? which one offers better deal for international flight?

    • I have the same question, 250k amex points whats the best way to use them?

      • +1

if you got AMEX MR points you can transfer 1:1 conversion to any frequent flyer program e.g. KF,Velocity,Asia Miles, etc. depending the availability of the flight you can use them depending on your choice of destination

    • +1

No. There are a lot better programs out there for international flights.

      • I agree. For my International desinations Velocity are terrible. Terrible redemption rates, and terrible availability.
The best for me and also probably for those wanting to go to Europe, is Singapore Airline KrisFlyer.
If people are buying Velocity to Convert to KF, then a price of 1.15 cents per Velocity point will currently convert and equate to about 1.5 cents for KrisFlyer. A price of 1.2 cents per Velocity point will currently convert and equate to a price of about 1.6 cents for KrisFlyer.
After 31/12/18 it will be a lot worse. (I think that is why a lot of ads are now popping up to sell or swap out of their Velocity points. Albeit at ridiculous prices)

      • What about domestic flights?

        • Domestic is easier to find and use less points especially business class. Eg I can get 2 people from Brisbane to Adelaide in business for about 57k points but I cannot find anything less than about a million points to the USA or Europe in business for two people the majority of the time.

    • +5

If you have amex points why would you ever want to transfer to velocity when you can transfer to kf directly.

  • +1

Gee no Altitude rewards. Westpac not being great lately.

  • Good for offloading those useless Citibank points

  • hmmmm i usually use points for gift cards wtf happened with velocity gift cards ? such a small list now… shame i would have transferred a good chunk if they had more selection…

  • according to AmEx. It is 20% for Ascent Membership?

  • So happy been saving all my points for this!!
PS. Think the flybuys ad is a bit inappropriate considering the recent Lion air crash :( https://go.velocityfrequentflyer.com/bonus

    • Seriously?

  • +1

Redeem and use your points now before they impose carrier surcharge next year and devaluating the points for transferring to KrisFlyer

  • But Krisflyer expire after 3 years so it's risky to transfer

  • -1

    new to Velocity points
so apparently 2000 FB points is 870 VP
the flights are 22100 VB or $249, or 22100 or $209. doesn't make sense. I think 20,000 FB is equal to $200?

    • +2

      20,000 Flybuys = $100.

    • reward seats can be had for 8000 points plus $50 tax I think. So a $250 flight could be 8000 points. Like sydney to Melb. With Qantas, and presumably virgin, Points are good when cash prices are high due to demand, for 1 way international (as distance based pricing, and often 1 way cash price is close to cash price of international return), and for flights that you may need to cancel where fully flexible cash price is ridiculous (as you only lose 5000 or 6000 points a booking if you used points (maybe flight, not sure)

  • 20% for Amex Platinum Charge customers (Ascent Premium)

  • Worth it transferring about 60k from AMEX platinum edge to Virgin?

    • +1

Personally not worth it as you get a higher rate if transfer directly to krisflyer. But worth it if you are planning on a velocity redemption I guess.

    • +1

ONLY if you have a specific reception in mind, there is availability and it’s cheaper than the alternatives. For flights, more common to transfer to KrisFlyer

      • Thanks guys. I thought about selling the points instead of redeeming for myself.

  • Just transferred now hope I'm not too late. In the credit card rewards sites it didn't say bonus 15% but the FlyBuys site did mention the bonus.

  • Apparently it's now been extended until December 9

    • Can you point to me where you got that info from? I will update the post. I cant find it in here: https://go.velocityfrequentflyer.com/bonus

      • I got it sent to me in an e-mail in relation to my DJs Amex card. It says this at the bottom:

        1. Points balance correct as at 16/11/2018. To transfer Membership Rewards points for Velocity Points you must be enrolled in Membership Rewards Ascent, Gateway, Business Ascent or David Jones Membership Rewards program and be a member of Velocity Frequent Flyer. To receive 15% Bonus Velocity Points you must transfer Membership Rewards points to Velocity between 00:01 AEDT 1 November 2018 and 11:59 AEDT 9 December 2018 (Promotion Period). A minimum of 2,000 Membership Rewards points must be redeemed for Velocity Points at any one time blah blah blah
  • So it seems it’s better value to go to KF direct even with the 15% velocity bonus.

If i transferred a large number of points to KF do they expire ? Would like to have a big trip next year with family but at this point may or may not happen. Assuming the 1:1 Amex rate won’t change so may be best to wait until ready. Although, seems now is the time to transfer Velocity points. I’m only going to use for international so from what I’ve read much better value doing this through KF. Then another carrier via Velocity.

I’ve got 500,000 velocity and almost 300,000 Amex

Do KF ever do bonuses on point transfers ?

    • +1

Yes, if you were planning to fly SQ rather than VA, then yes better to transfer direct from Amex to SQ. However if you had Citibank pts last month, its better to transfer from Citi to Velocity than to KF because of the 30% bonus https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/418057.

Yes, if you transfer your points to KF, you have 3 years to use the points. However if your big trip is next year, nothing to worry about.

The 1:1 Amex rate will change come April and become worse i.e. 2:1 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/416422 . So transfer before 15th April.

Ive never seen any bonuses for KF.
