Sony KD65A9F 65" Master Series OLED TV $5495 (RRP $7499) + Delivery @ The Good Guys eBay

PGOOD20

Before anyone goes off about the price of this TV, this is the just released Master Series with the X1 Ultimate chipset & the latest Android Oreo OS. This model has got some excellent reviews so far. It may not be for everyone, but for someone who knows about this TV and wants this brand new model, this is a ripper price! I personally spent $4300 for the A8F 5 months ago, but would have gladly spent $1000 more for this model.

RRP on this model is $7499, with Sony selling it on sale for $6499. Cheapest you can find elsewhere is for $6490 with Videopro and Addicted to Audio. None of the other big box retailers have them listed on their website yet!

This is probably the best tv right now

    • -3

IMO not if it needs calibration to get accurate colours (and it does - seen on rtings https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/sony/a9f, it's quite far out by default).
I'd still choose a Panasonic for colour accuracy, but no Dolby Vision if that's important to you or others.

      • The lean back stand put me off this as well. Apparently in Japan they place the TV below eye level and then this stand would work. However if you are mounting this on a wall then the stand doesn't matter.

      • +4

Colours actually seem fairly accurate, its the white balance and gamma that is slightly off.

Honestly if you're buying a $6k TV you probably should get it professionally calibrated anyway..

    • In America they did a reviewer shoot-out test about a month ago. This TV came out on top.
      1. Sony A9F

      (Tied For second)
      2. LG C8
      2. Sony Z9F
      4. Samsung Q9FN (Last by a long way)

Burn in is still a problem with OLED, so if you're planning on gaming or watching TV that have logos then good luck! Try to use it more as home cinema and it should be fine.

  • i wonder how you would mount this to a wall bracket

  • +2

Waiting for the 55" A9F to drop to low $3k before purchasing. Currently $3998 via the same promo.

And will purchase this upright TV Base to use-

    X1 Ultimate Chipset not A1

    • Ah yes! Was thinking abt the old A1E model and typed it by mistake

    • Can anyone explain what the chipset does? I hazard guess its basically like the soc on a phone? Does a faster chipset do anything for image quality?

      • -1

It's all just marketing. The Sony staff talks about better colour reproduction and upscaling but if you look at a Sony TV with the X1 Ultimate and X1 Extreme, you would not be able to tell much of a difference.

      • I hope changing channels is quicker.

  • A1 only has x1 extreme

    • A1 and A8F are running the X1 extreme chipset.

  • -2

    And old android

    • +3

Nope. Wrong. This has the updated Android Oreo interface.

      • I meant a1 was older android
        Not to mention slow

  • Free C&C is not available. May want to update the heading.

  • +1

This is how much i spent 3yrs ago on my 75" Sony X8500C LED TV.

    85" OLED coming soon?

  • How is this compared to A1 Series - 55in OLED Ultra HD Android TV?

    • +2

There is a video on YouTube from rtings discuss this. Short version, it's better, but not worth the price differences.

I was also compared this and A1. Since A1 was 2999, this price is way to high.

Just for pic quality it's like 95 vs 98

  • I went to Sony Session and they had a demonstration on LG OLED C8 model vs A9F. Apparently, Sony blows LG out of the water with its red differentiation, deep black, and clarity on sound. Hence, if you can afford it, I would suggest to go with Sony A9F. However, price is little bit expensive for my blood…I'm still using LG E7….so until it dies….then i'll consider to upgrade to it…

    • Interesting. The panel is made by LG so there being a big difference seems disingenuous?

      • +1

Panel is not everything. It's a panel able to present 1 to 100, however you need a chip to effectively transfer the input signal to the accurate output. That's why we need tone mapping etc.

But, based on reviews I saw, it is not a overall win compare to lg. There is a compare review.

Also the Netflix mode is cheating based on HDTVtest.

    • +17

Wait, are you saying you went to a Sony sponsored event and they showed you that their TV was better?

      • I hear what you're saying, but all you have to do is go into JB Hi-fi and the difference is obvious. The thing that really annoys me about LG OLED (and which I can't get past, and which I'm astonished they haven't fixed) is their circuitry manages to blow out the highlights (whites too bright and no detail). The Sony does an obviously better job.

    • +1

Just get a Panasonic with a sound bar. Sony is way overpriced.

    • -1

Better hope Jamie or anyone else from Sony doesn't read this; there was a reason why we were told not to take photos in that room …

      • The Sony Sessions TV guy was just nagging about how much better the Sony TVs are, he went through five demo videos. Who compares TVs at their default store mode settings? I wanted to leave the room but felt it would be 'impolite'.

If you calibrate your LG TV, it is not as bad as the store demo mode. It was an unfair comparison and more nagging about the Sony X1 Extreme chipset, acoustic surface etc.

      • @kerfuffle What's a no photo rule got to do with this guy writing his opinion on a forum?

        • His username checks out. I even took photos at the Hi-Res Audio area and they did not care.

  • +2

    Thanks bought 10

    • Save some for the rest of us rich ppl!

    • are you a crazy rich asian

  • Looking at the A8F version as it's cheaper.

    Still good to get?

    • Search the dimming issues of a1 and a8 and check if that bothers you first.

    • The Verge rated the A8F a 5.5/10, stating it was sub-par to the LG, with a poor UI and issues with the streaming apps.

I still take that as a 5.5 in the context of OLEDs and that it's obviously a superb TV to an LCD, but if it were the A8F vs an LG C8, I would go for the LG.

      • +1

Rather than checking Verge, I recommend you check out hdtv test or rtings.com for proper reviews on TV's. I have the A8f and I've seen some local dimming, but it's not as bad as they say. Verge tho, have some good reviews on phones.

    • +1

Definitely at the current price. Check out hdtv test or rtings.com for reviews and comparisons. If you watch a lot of sports and hd content, the upscaling is unmatched.

  • My next big screen TV ought to be 8K.
NHK starts streaming 8K next month. Next Olympic will be on 8K.

    • +2

Unless you sit very close to your TV, you'll need a 100"+ screen to benefit from 8K.

    • +1

Will be easier for TV manufacturers to build 8K TV's than for TV/movie producers to create native 8K media. You would have to be happy with upscaling if you buy the first or IMHO even second generation of 8K TV's.

  • +2

    3.6k for a c8 65" is a way better deal tho

  • Be careful though. All other Sony's OLED suffers from dimming issue where there are static image. Some suggested that the dimming was so bad that it has ruined their viewing experience. Not sure if this model is affected though.

    • is this the same as banding? My super oled from Panasonic has shocking banding and its very common

      • No, its different. To counter burn-in (which is a non issues for most people), Sony has implemented a dimming algorithm where if there are static image on the screen for a period of time says 1 minute for example then the screen will dim to a point where some says its unwatchable. This is after they did an update to enable HDR on the TV earlier in the year, before the update Sony's Oled were regarded as the best TV as a whole package: image quality, motion and processing.

  • +3

I've yet to find an Android OS TV that isn't slow as molasses. Why is it so hard to do a simple thing like toggle options, scroll through lists smoothly on these $$$$ TVs? Literally a 5 year old phone can do better.

    • +1

Yeah dunno why some consider android tv a "selling" point. LG web os smashes it from usability/performance pov (with less apps though)

      • +1

        Exactly, less apps.

Android TV you can sideload anything Android if you want, things that support Android TV are usually great (if the Android TV device in question has the chops). Also the added bonus of using emulators and the like for a bit of light gaming is great.

    • True. Android on my Sony makes me nuts as it is super slow to respond in initial minute or 2 and sometimes does not do anything even you can see TV's LED accepting signal from remote….

      • +3

Android on the A9F is far quicker.

  • Dimming is annoying on a1

  • I see OLED pricing isn't progressing at all, that's a shame.

I wouldn't pay that much for anything less than 80"

    (Master edition or not)

  • One thing I don't get is why Sony have the same crappy cheapskate remote control for all of their TVs, from the cheapest to the most expensive. Paying over $5k they should have a better remote to supply. Another reason to get an LG instead.

    • +1

On the contrary, I prefer dumb remotes because it's easier to then use your own (i.e. Harmony) which controls a bunch of other stuff as well. I find LG's magic remote very annoying.

      • +2

But still, for such an expensive TV I think a more premium looking/feeling remote would be more appropriate. When you put that remote next to a TV like this it just looks wrong.

        • +2

I have to agree with the remote. I bought a $1000 Sony LED tv 1.5 years ago and a Sony A8F 5 months ago costing over $4000, and both of them have the same bloody remote!

Considering this is their flagship model costing way over $5000, they should have included a premium remote. Feels very basic and plasticky IMO.

  • When are the new LED 55" and 65" Sony's coming out?

  • For those with a bright living room what do TV experts think of these in comparison:

    Samsung QLED Q9F 65" QA65Q9F for $3996

    Samsung QLED Q7F 65" QA65Q7F for $2636

    • +1

Q9 series has got some bloody good reviews and user feedback so far! the black levels are not close to OLED's but they are definitely on the higher end of the Samsung's TV family!

They would be a good addition for a bright living room. They have higher peak brightness levels and the input lag is also low, so its great for gaming.

      Rtings.com review

      Techradar review

Good OLED vs Q9 comparison video by HDTV test here

They are also cheaper ($3830) via Samsung Enhanced Partnership Program , but currently out of stock for the 65"

    • For that amount of money, I invest in an Oled display. The reason being, Oled is an emissive display meaning at 4K resolution you have more than 8 millions individual pixel that can be turn on and off completely which also means you will have the best image quality overall compare to the the Samsung Qled. This is because the QLED is still using the ancient LCD display technology which use back-light to lit up the display and as a result you will see uneven uniformity, light bleeding and clouding in a dark room when watching movies with dark scenes it in.

      • Yeah, I've really wanted OLED for a while but my living room is incredibly bright, if OLED could stand up to my living room I'd definitely get one. I cannot reduce the day time light levels in my living room without making it look ugly, though I did see that OLEDs can be good at preventing reflections.

I also game on the TV, so the low input lag on the QLED is a plus.

        • +1

Even though I recommend the Q9 earlier for you, I have the A8F in my bright living room and I was very well aware of the brightness issue before I bought it. But they aren't too bad for me.

I also game on the PS4 Pro & Xbox One on the A8F, but really no input lag issues for me. Again, I dont spend any time multiplayer gaming online for the input lag to be an issue.

I wanted an OLED mainly for watching movies & tv content upscaled from my NAS, Netflix and Amazon Prime TV which the A8F fits perfectly.

          • @aspirepranesh: The A8F is one I eyeballed and was definitely interested in, my concern isn't just how it looks now but in 3+ years as the organic compound slowly fails and becomes less bright, I think I read 50% brightness in 7 years. 7 years is great for a TV, but is it still okay after 3 in regards to brightness?

I don't play multiplayer, so if you don't find the input lag an issue, that is definitely a plus. I got a new monitor in January, noticed on my old TV when playing my PS4 that input lag is crap. I had gotten use to it, but now I've noticed it, it bothers me.

            • +1

@FabMan: I had 2 main reasons for choosing A8F over the LG C8 - Sony's native upscaling was better than LG & Panasonic & the inbuilt Android TV functionality (although, people say it is painfully slow and clunky) I am used to from my previous Sony LED tv. I was able to install the Synology apps straight on to the tv. Combining the Sony's upscaling as well as Synology's transcoding on the fly, the output is great!

Otherwise my pick would have been the C8 for sure.

In terms of what happens in 4-7 years, I have no idea! My last Panasonic LCD/LED was going strong after 9 years that I had to give it away.

If you're fussed about input lag and oled brightness a few years down the line, save yourself some $$ and get a high end Sony LED like the X9000F and upgrade to OLED in couple of years. Of course, as always it would be cheaper and newer technology, maybe even micro led!

        • +1

If I'm still using my Panasonic plasma in my living room til this day, I think an OLED in a bright living room won't be an issue. And yes I did own a 4k Panasonic LCD TV before but sold it because of light bleed which is very distracting and you always looks at it which ruined the viewing experience for me.

          • @Wolfofwallstreet: My LCD also has light bleed, but that is a tiny distraction compared to the reflection of the windows I can see in it.

  • 900F or 7800F?

    • 9000F is the top of the range. 7800F seems to be their lower end model, hence the big price difference. For picture quality, definitely recommend the 9000F
