YouTube Premium (AdFree YouTube, YouTube Music, Google Music) for ~A$4.23 (No Fee Card) Per Month (Russian VPN Required)

3770

Similar to doweyy's deal on cheaper Netflix, the users at Mydealz have worked out a way to get cheaper Youtube Premium. Everything mentioned in doweyy's post applies here e.g. no fee credit card so I'll just keep things simple.

Youtube Premium will give you access to -
• Ad-free videos: Watch videos without interruptions
• Save offline: Save videos and songs on your mobile device to watch offline
• Background play: Keep videos or music playing when using other apps or when your screen’s off
• Audio mode: Listen to audio only on the YouTube Music app
• Google Play Music Subscription (when available in your country) is included at no additional cost

Current pricing is $14.99 per month in Australia whereas Russia is 199 RUB which works out to be about A$4.23 per month. This workaround should work for new and existing customers.

Again, the trick to making this work is having access to a VPN service. If you're signed up to one then the rest of the process should be fairly simple.

Instructions -
1. Connect a VPN to the server Russia
2. View YouTube.com then click on your profile picture in the top right corner and change the location from Russia to Australia.
3. Click on this link, then click on Learn more.
4. Enter Russian address and pay by credit card.
Termination takes place under this link
Example of a Russian address.
City: My City
Street: My street 1
State: Tulskaya oblast
Postcode: 300000

Um Youtube is still free not sure what you want.

      • Can you not tell that this deal is for a paid premium service?

  • PIA doesn't have Russia, is that correct?

  • Which VPN do you use for this and what credit cards are recommended

  • Are there savings on Family plan?

    • 299 RUB for Family, instead of 199 RUB for Single user.

      • ~$au6.20 Hmmm lets see if this keeps working before I jump……I'm on the $18/mth which apparently is now $23 and I don't want to lose that pricing

For iOS users: I suggest you delete the youtube app and just make a shortcut icon to the youtube website on your phone instead - better still, the desktop website and not the mobile site. You'll be able to use picture-in-picture, play in background, and have ad-free video if you additionally use a Safari content blocker.

Bonus points: use Apple Shortcuts app to install scripts to download source video, mp3, etc to save video directly to your local files if you so wish.

I'm personally more than happy to pay for good software or novel features and extra content. But with many Youtube Premium features, you're not paying for anything "new", you are simply paying to "unblock" something your phone already does by default. It's absurd. It's reasonable to ask me to pay for features YouTube programmed. It's not reasonable to ask me to pay for features inbuilt to iOS that YouTube expressly went out of their way to block and put a paywall on.

    • Where or how do you get to 'safari content blocker'?

      • +2

Safari content blocking is a feature is included in iOS since I believe version 10 or 11. You will see the feature in your settings app under safari and can turn it off/on.

However, the feature is there but is not actually populated with any list of content to actually block. Therefore you need to get a third party app which will put an adblocking subscription list INTO your content blocker.

You can find numerous adblockers, some free some not, which will put subscriptions into the content blocker list: Adblock, Adblock Plus, Crystal, 1Blocker, 1Blocker X, etc.

        • +3

Content blockers were introduced in iOS 9.

          I use AdGuard.

How do you get a picture in picture support from Safari? Is it only available on Plus models of iPhones? What Apple shortcut do you use to download video and music? Does it let you choose the video quality?
What I don't like about desktop version of Youtube is that it uses the default iOS video player and it sucks. It ff and rewinds 15 secs and you need 2 taps to do that. In YouTube app, you double-tap to ff 5 or 10 secs.

    • how do you install the scripts to download/save mp3?

  • +14

To anyone who has an Android device, save yourself some money and download YouTube Vanced instead. It's basically YouTube premium on steroids that gives you all the goodies from the paid version along with dark mode. I've been using this for over a year now and it has been great.

    • What about IOS users what can they use?

And internet is so cheap in Russia…
100mbit unlimited for 10 bucks… And no connection fees, minimum contracts.. you can even stop paying when go for holidays. My sweet motherland.
Same with mobile phone plans - cheap as hell. And 5G is coming soon.

    • +15

When the government provides services they're cheap.

When the private sector provides services they're expensive because shareholders have to be paid and by law their interests are the most important.

Guess what morons in this country vote for. They voted Labour and Liberal, the two parties that repeatedly privatise things claiming that this makes them cheaper. They even vote them back in after they go to elections claiming they won't privatise elecricity and then they privatise electricity immediatlky. Morons voted for the same party again illustrating that there is no accountability.

      • +9

Not sure why you were down-voted, you're mostly correct.

Government-owned corporations may not be super efficient, but without a profit motive they're generally able to focus on customer service without conflicts of interest. For essential services which are natural monopolies, like water, power, roads etc, this is the best model to ensure citizens get good value and aren't extorted.

My only issue with your comment is that ALP doesn't often advocate for privatisation, and usually opposes it.

        • +2

Most "cheap" government services are subsidised some way or another.

Customer service is a little hit and miss. Sure, there's no profit motive (though the government still demands efficiency, and sometimes a dividend depending on the service), but that is somewhat countered by the fact that there is also no customer retention motive either. It's a complex space.

Capitalism, for all its flaws, has been the driver of innovation and progress, which in turn has helped with life expectancy, reducing extreme poverty etc.

There are some services that should definitely remain government-led. But I wouldn't wish for government ownership outside of the essential… we may end up like, well, Russia! Cheap internet… but, other stuff.

          • +2

@TheZohan: I totally agree that not all services should be government owned. Where capitalism and market forces can work properly, they should be used to deliver services in an efficient and cost-effective fashion.

But natural monopolies are unavoidable - it makes zero sense to have duplicate roads or power lines running parallel to each other, to allow 2 companies to compete for customers on their own networks. Giving a private corporation a monopoly is equally foolish - it allows exploitation and price-guoging because there's no competition.

So it makes sense that the government owns and runs natural monopolies like water, power, road and comms networks. The services can then be run at cost, which keeps prices as low as practical. Competition can happen on retail services delivered over these networks, and ensures a level(ish) playing field for corporations.

            • +1

@klaw81: Yeah, agree with everything you've said. Core services should stay within government - owned and run collectively by the people.

            • @klaw81: Oh wait, we do have duplicate roads. All those tolls in the capital cities…. "Faster alternative" to the slow government roads

        • They generally oppose privitisation when they're not in power. Then when they get in they privatise stuff because "they'll use the money to create jobs". But it's always short sighted.

      • +1

Internet and mobile services in Russia provided by private companies. Internet in particular is way less controlled in Russia compare to Australia. Competition is tough so prices go down and no lock-in contracts.

  • I've got PIA VPN, which doesn't have Russia….. Will need to get a trial of something else…. Also, could someone check the family plan price for me pls? :) Thanks!

Now have to find a cheaper way to subscribe to Audible Platinum like this :D

    • I used to be very stingy at Audible… Then I realised audiobooks are probably the best investments I can make on myself at $15 per month. So I now just pay the piper.

      • Yes I believe the same too, but Audible credit system doesn't allow me to enjoy smaller titles which are of same cost of larger titles (40+ hours ) that is my biggest gripe

I wish Google implements a listen all you want rental scheme for Audiobooks at $20 a month

    • Check what audiobooks you can borrow free from your local library, mine gives me access to Bolinda and Overdrive audiobooks.

    • I had this problem too. I was connected to Russia via WindScribe VPN and youtube was detecting the location as Ukraine. I signed out of Windscribe and relogged in and it gave me a new IP and that worked for me.

      hope this helps somehow.

This is all well and good. But can anyone confirm which cards they've used successfully? I have NAB Visa and Macquarie Mastercard Debit, which people have stated (on the Netflix deal) not to have worked. Note I have not tried either yet.

    • I'd also like to know this, I'm planning on using my nab visa. I'd live to pay for a year or two in advance if anyone knows of a way to do it with this deal

    • Mine is CBA. All good.

      • I have used AMEX. Is there any fee involved?

        • its usually 3%.

          Check the Product Disclosure Statement.

          • @COVID-19: Is there anyway I can avoid the fee? I have NAB Visa debit card as well.

            • +1

@user99: Get either a citibank or ING card that'll waive the 3% fees.

      • can you pay yearly?

    • +2

I've just tried this with NAB visa debit using NordVPN and it worked. Can see my updated subscription as 199RB/per month.

      • Do you know if you need to do. This every month?

        • Not exactly sure mate, it's my first time trying it. I've read around here and it seems that you only do it one time and it should run automatically.

    • Successfully used ANZ Travel Rewards here (no currency conversion fee) for the Russia YouTube Premium.

    • Not worked for me on 28 degrees and all CBA cards. I think this has popped up on some risk profiles.

  • Worked! Thanks heaps. Postcode had to be 300000. Also I’m doing on a iPhone so had to do it through safari and not the YouTube app to get the 199 price

  • This worked great. Got the Family deal on Bendigo Debit Card (Student) with NordVPN.
Just wondering f there's a way to do this for Google Drive storage? When I tried the above trick it only showed prices in AU$. I am currently subscribed though. Wondering if I have to cancel sub before being able to see RU prices?

  • Thanks OP

  • Is google music any good?

    • Best if you use with Android auto

I don't understand why Ozbargainers accept these type of needless premium subscription services.
Youtube Red has no value and no exclusive features other than access to YouTube Originals videos. They put up a paywall on what would otherwise be free content.

Same goes for eBay Plus, Amazon Prime, Club Catch. The subscription services aren't necessary. Why pay a premium in order to pay more money??
It seems these days they can charge an additional premium on anything and people here will lap it up.

    • i have no way to block youtube ads on my shieldTV without rooting that i know of and they are starting to get agressive with the ads. a few months ago i would see an ad every 5 or so videos but now its before every video and even playback stops to play another ad during the video as well. i think ill go insane if i ever have to see another mazda ad so paying 4.23 a month for that alone is a bargain

      • What's wrong with Amazon prime? I pay $4.99 per month and I get free shipping + amazon tv

You get google music with this too….
