Hi OzBargain,

I’m Aidan from SimsDirect.

A big thank you to everyone who purchased and supported us in our New Zealand SIM deal last week and hello to anyone who hasn’t met myself or the team before.

I’d like to start the deal with a quick story about us but if you don’t have time to read, it’s all good, just scroll down to ‘The Deal’ :)

I started SimsDirect with my best mate in February this year and can confidently say it has been an absolutely crazy ride for the two of us. We have had an explosive year of growth and the amount of support and positive feedback we received from aussie travelers has been awesome.

In the past 7 months, we have moved into an office, brought on our first employee and learned a lot about growing and managing a business. It has been extremely fulfilling to build SimsDirect from scratch and an incredible feeling to be able help thousands of Aussies travel connected overseas.

However, it hasn’t been all rainbows and unicorns. Mac and I are both in our mid-twenties and we have never owned and operated a business before, so unsurprisingly, we’ve made plenty of mistakes and had our fair share of difficulties to overcome. We don’t always get it right, but the one thing that's pushed us through is looking after our customers and appreciating every bit of support we receive. We wouldn’t be here without the love and support of not just Ozbargain, but every customer we’ve been fortunate enough to help.

So why am I telling you all this? Well, we want to see how far we can take SimsDirect! It’s going to be a long journey but we are going to take a crack at becoming Australia’s leading Travel SIM brand and to help as many Aussie travelers as we can. We aren’t going to be able to do this without your feedback and support so please share your thoughts in the comments and leave an upvote if you see value in what we are trying to do!

Thank you for reading,

-Aidan and SimsDirect team

Good luck guys - if anyone is interested in what sort of coverage SoftBank have - see here

    • Hey Double!

Appreciate it, means a lot! Thanks for the info I've added it to the post :)

      -Aidan

      • Hey man this is a good idea you came up with and I'll buy your sim for japan next feb.

but i think a more appropriate name for your company would be simsmiddlemen because you're basically a middleman for sims, not direct :)

        • lol smart ass…

Maybe he could argue the "direct" means "direct" to your door

  • Good to support oz businesses. Going in May so just bought one, saves me having to shop around

    • Cheers Crackers!

Thanks for the support and business :) Reach out to us any time if you need anything.

      -Aidan

  • This is great but I’ll only be there for 7 days. Are you doing any further specials on the 8 day sim to Japan??

    • +1

      Hey Ted,

Sorry my man, we don't have any deals for the 8 day SIM planned just yet as we don't have enough stock for an Ozbargain deal. However, you can use our 'First time customer' discount WELCOME10 for 10% off your order. This code works on any product in our store whenever you like.

      I hope this helps :)

      -Aidan

      • Awesome, thanks Aidan 🤗

        • No worries Ted! :)

  • Really nicely formatted deal and great detail. I'll offer some support in the form of a pos vote.

However, I need to point out to fellow Ozbargainers that there may be a better deal for those who have access to this StarHub SIM, either because they might be going to Singapore some time before they head to Japan, or those who have purchased a SIM previously.

    Summary of Differences:

    • 5GB for 30 days for $25 SGD vs 5GB for 15 days for $39 AUD (the dollar is roughly 1:1)
    • I presume this Japan SIM comes with a Japanese phone number, so helpful in case you need to receive calls in Japan. The StarHub is very expensive for receiving/making calls
    • More flexibility with the StarHub, or you can purchase smaller data packs if you don't need 5GB (1GB for $11, 3GB for $18).
    • StarHub must be purchased either in Singapore, or on a Jetstar Asia flight within Asia. The only route I can think of that you can fly that doesn't touch Singapore is KIX-TPE (Osaka-Taipei) or KIX-MNL (Osaka-Manila), so it's obviously not as easy to get as this SIM

      Hey illumination,

Thanks for the upv ;) and the detailed comment.

I have seen this SIM before on Ozbargain and yeah its a fantastic deal. We've been trying to get our hands on some for a few weeks but no response from Star Hub as of yet. I'd love to get some of these to Australia and offer them as one of our products because the value is unreal. Ozbargain will be the first to know if I do get some! haha

      cheers,
      -Aidan

If you could, I think it would be an absolute game changer.

I'm not entirely sure how it would work though, because unlike Australian prepaid SIMs, you can't sell a prepaid Singaporean SIM in advance to be activated in the future. It has to be activated on the spot by the seller, and it involves the seller taking a copy of your passport.

As a side note, Singapore mandates that one passport can only have 3 Singaporean prepaid SIMs registered at any given time.

As another alternative, here's another product - Pokefi which I think you guys may be able to sell? It's a deal I posted a couple of weeks ago. I imagine selling Pokefi will be easier than selling StarHub.

        • Very inciteful! That's something I had no idea about. Probably the reason I haven't heard back from them haha…

Sometimes distributors like to bend the rules a little bit and don't follow the rules so I'll keep hunting around and see what comes back.

Cheers for the link, I'll take a look into that one too.

          -Aidan

    • Don't you have to buy a $15 Sim and then buy a $25 data top up? Totally $40?

      • I don't know why I find your name so hilarious 😂

        Thankyou cheesecactus

      • +1

You pay $15 for the sim and get $18 of credit, to which you can use to buy the $25 5GB 30 day option.
        Outlay is $15 + $7 = $22

    • +1

I've read into this more and retract my previous comment. My understanding of how this starhub sim works (based on their website http://www.starhub.com/personal/mobile/mobile-phones-plans/p…)

Option 1. Get the $50 Happy phone sim which comes with $50 of credit. Then use this credit to get 5gb data for $25. So 10gb all up for 30 days.

Option 2. Get the $32 internet sim which gives you 2gb daily for 15 days (30gb all up). I dont know if this works with phones though. If someone could confirm this, i think this would be ideal (for myself at least).

Please correct me if im wrong. I'm going to Japan in Jan for 14 days and am trying to pick the best sim.

      • Are you transiting through Changi Airport?

Option 1. Get the $50 Happy phone sim which comes with $50 of credit. Then use this credit to get 5gb data for $25. So 10gb all up for 30 days.

The number of days cumulate so you will get 10gb over 60 days!

How much data are you planning to use?

        • Oh cool, that's nice to see it accumulates.

I'm only there for 14 days, so the $32 internet Sim seems perfect for approx 30gb. Definitely not going to miss that much, but nice to have! And super cheap!

And yes I've got a couple hours in Singapore on the way there

  • +1

From a quick google, it seems you can get an umlimited sim for the same price
    https://www.japan-rail-pass.com.au/services/simcard

    • Hey Sudoroot,

Thanks for the find, there are a few of these Japanese SIM businesses around. Many of them offer a local pick up option at the airport and can be a fairly common/popular way of getting Japan SIMs. We take on alot of costs as an Aussie business (exchange rate, import taxes etc) to get our SIMs here to Oz so you will most likely be able to finder cheaper options in Japan here and there. But hopefully you see the value in supporting an Aussie business and getting the SIM before you fly.

      Cheers,
      -Aidan

Fair enough, thanks for the detailed answer.
Am I able to recharge this if I run low on data?

        Thanks!

        • Unfortunately, you can't top up the SIM. Kinda sucks but gotta work with what we got!

          -Aidan

    • In the terms of service:

-Network speed of this product is based on the network availability and there is no guarantee to provide any specific network speed. The network speed may decrease depending on the number of connected subscribers.

It's quite common for japan telco's to shape your data to 128kbps after using more than 300mb or 500mb per day. I'd rather have the choice to use my data when I want rather than wait to be unshaped the next day.

  • just bought 2x simcard.. i am to visit for 30 days.. so buying 2x 15 days is allowable right? use one for first 15 days.. then on the 16th day use the second simcard. is this correct storereps?

    • Spot on :) You can totally do that.

      Thanks for your purchase mcvic2k!

Let me know if you need anything.

found this deal which is pretty good.
    could you price beat this?

    • Hey hishaken,

Scroll up to sudoroot's comment above :)

We won't be offering anything lower than 25% off unless its a special occasion.

      Cheers,

  • How well does this work with Nighthawk M1?

    • I don't have any personal experience with the netgear nighthawk.

However just taking a quick look it says it supports LTE bands 900, 1800, 2100.

All of which SoftBank supports. You can check here.

You will get 4GLTE speeds no problem at all with the nighthawk.

      Hope that helps!

      -Aidan

  • Will be in Japan for Christmas so I picked one up. First time using a travel sim, usually we get a pocket wifi. Hope everything works well!

  • Hi Rep. Can you do a deal on NZ please. Missed the last one.

    • Hey Savvy,

We won't have another NZ deal for a few weeks at this point. If you are leaving very soon the best I can do is 10% off with our 'First-time customer' discount: WELCOME10

Otherwise, you will need to keep an eye on us and snatch it up before they sell out. You can subscribe to us on our Ozbargain page here.

You will get a notification when we post deals :)

      Hope this helps!
      -Aidan

  • Plus for these guys. Having just using their SIM card in Japan, thought I'd summarise my experience below:

    Positives

    • Excellent customer service - From pre / post sale, they were very prompt in responding to my FB queries (managed from their website) as long as its within their 'business hours'.
    • Very straight forward to setup (apart from the little confusion). Yes, there are probably better deal, but travelling with young family to Japan, we wanted less hassle for sim/data. We didn't want to register and go to counter pickup etc. Plug and Play!
    • No issue with coverage. We were in Tokyo/Kyoto/Hiroshima/Osaka via bullet train. Maybe some off spots during the train trip but 99.9% no issues.
    • Definitely go through these guys again if/when we go Japan again (need to save up for family to go again!!!)
    Little confusion
    • When I first put in the sim card, rebooted phone, nothing really happened. However, I got a sms from China telecom which I thought was 'spam' initially. The sms turned out to be legit and it stated to turn on global roaming. I originally didn't do that as I was afraid that might use up extra data and $ etc. However, after hitting simdirect.com.au, they answered (luckily timezone difference wasn't that great)!. Turned on global roaming and all great again. So for those who didn't read the fine print like me :), the sim card is from china mobile so dont be too alarmed. Just follow the china mobile sms instructions and turn on global roaming.

    thanks again simdirect!

      Hey ausooi,

Thanks so much for the detailed feedback. I really appreciate you not just giving me the positive highlights but your difficulties too!

It's feedback like this that helps us think of better ways to help our customers. In the coming months, I will be redoing our digital PDF guides to make things like this clear for users.

      Again, thanks for the feedback!

      -Aidan

  • Thank you Aidan! Picked up 3 SIMs for our upcoming trip in a few weeks.

Great deal and thank you for posting the set up guide which was very clear.

    • Hey huu,

The 8 day SIM isn't included with this deal (we just dont have enough stock).

However, you can use our 'first-time customer' discount: WELCOME10 for 10% off you order if you like.

      Hope that helps,

      -Aidan

  • I benefitted from the NZ and EU deals and now JP! Thanks! Trip isn’t until April but I’ll put the sim in with my passport so I don’t forget :)

    • Hey pennae,

      Damn, you get around! haha

Thanks so much for your orders with us, I'm glad we've been able to help with multiple trips :)

      -Aidan

  • I will support with a + vote even though I have got my travel sim from Welcome Japan NTT DoCoMo because its cheaper and goes to 20 days.

    • +1

      Hey burningrage,

Cheers! Thanks for the vote :)

No worries my man. Whatever is best for your travels is what you should get! Let me know how it goes I'd love to hear some feedback on your experience with that product.

      -Aidan

  • Your other japan deals have been around $24 mark for 5gb also why is this one $40? Thanks

    • +3

      Hey bangsharkfin,

Our previous deals earlier this year for the Japan SIM was for our 8-day version of the product. This 15 day version is more expensive for us to purchase. On top of that, we aren't offering as heavy of a discount because we have brought on a lot more operating expenses and the Aussie dollar is a much weaker than it was at the start of the year, so we've had to be a bit more thoughtful with the discounts we offer and the price of our products.

Hope this clears it up for you.
      -Aidan

  • Any upcoming deals on a sim that covers India?

    • Hey jemmett,

We won't be posting any deals for the Asia/India SIM, unfortunately. You are welcome to use our First-time customer discount WELCOME10 however.

But thats the most I can do for you!

      Cheers,
      -Aidan

  • Any discount on your 15day Asia card? I would like South Korea and Japan.

    • Hey petestrash,

Unfortunately not, that product has barely any margin in it for us. We will likely never post a deal on ozbargain for that product. If we do it will either be apart of a store-wide deal or a very small discount.

You are more than welcome to use the code WELCOME10 if you are a first time customer, but that the most I can do for you!

      -Aidan

  • Just bought two for our trip in May. Thanks heaps!

    • Thanks Jazilla!

      • Is this expired now? Not able to apply the discount code anymore

        EDIT: nvm refreshed :)

  • +1

Just bought one to support an Aussie business, even though you could work on your pricing (not that competitive for Japan)

I've been ripped off countless times when buying SIM cards overseas, especially in Bali and KL. (e.g. I paid for a 10GB sim and only got 2GB!).

    • +1

      Hey Johnny,

Thanks for the feedback and purchase! Pricing is a little difficult at the moment with Aussie dollar and the expenses we go through just to provide the SIMs here in Oz. We kinda just take what we can get. There is most likely better options out there and don't blame anyone if they want to go for a cheaper option (it is ozbargain at the end of the day!)

I'm sorry to hear about your experiences in Bali, unfortunately tourists can be taken advantage of!

      Thanks for the comment :)

      -Aidan

Arrived in Japan yesterday with this recently purchased ozbargain. Eventually got it going as the advertised apn "3gnet" didn't work.
Support advised me to use "mfm" as the apn and am now online. Hope this info helps others get online asap when arriving in Japan.
