Maybe when you can hack this and at $79, we'll talk.

    • If that's what you want why not just get a raspberry pi?

      • +15

I like the case and it's "official'.

        • +9

Dude, hit up EB and see if you can find one of these. https://ebgames.com.au/loot-237725-Sony---PlayStation-One-Pl…

I got one a few months back for the shit of it and the thing is waaay more than big enough for a Raspberry Pi, provided you have the means to cut out little power cord holes and shit, it should do you fine, and AFAIK it's still decently smaller than the official PS1 mini anyway.

        • -3

And if we hack it, technically its not official anymore

        • +5

It's so official they slapped an open source emulator into a small PSX case and called it a day.

      • I have a Raspberry 3B+. Which joysticks should I buy?

    • the first part is basically done, just waiting for the $79 now.

    • +1

      Already been hacked.

    • +3

      And dualshock analog thumbsticks enabled

    • These can be hacked.

  • +1

Bargain is the higher cashback on Amazon?

  • -7

    Thank you, Next

  • +14

I returned mine. I'll buy it when it's 50% off. There are a mountain of these unsold. Sony really stuffed up.

  • -3

With the 20 games it's decent value. The emulation solution is a reasonably poor effort Sony but the games run ok and are playable.

    • +5
      • +6

I am buying when it is below $80. The emulation is a mess.

I am only posting this for people who want to buy regardless of Sony’s low effort. Why pay full price?

        • I'd just get a PS3. Then you have full analogue wireless controllers.

          • @tanksinatra: I use NVidia Shield for my emulator need. This +Gamesome makes it into a perfect classic emu machine

  • +5

A raspberry pi is cheaper :)

  • +11

This thing is garbage. I would avoid, unless you must have the nostalgia. The games just have not aged well.

    • +9

+1. It'll be fun for the first minute then "why the eff did I buy this?"

      • Precisely this. I bought a lot of stuff this year and this was my one blemish.

I've thrown away the plastic packaging but have everything else. Wonder if I can refund.

      • +1

        HAHAHAHAHAHAHA that was my thought

  • +5

I honestly wouldn't play these old games even for free.

  • +10

The fact that they used the first controller and not a Dualshock is a joke especially when they include MGS with the Psycho Mantis vibration in it.

    • +5

Yeh this was a really odd choice on sony's behalf

Seems like a rush job just to get something out the door + poor management decisions

      • +11

The history of Sony is full of these kinds of stupid decisions: from forcing betamax, infighting between Sony Music and Sony electronic causing late adoption to MP3 (thus dooming MiniDisc and their digital music plyer using ATRAC), rootkit, not using SD card for psp etc etc. They are now a shell of their former shelf with their main revenue basically from financial services.

        • +4

Sony sure has a history of dumb decisions.

        • +6

PS4 Pro with no UHD BR player was hilarious to me, yet frustrating

        • Maybe 10 years ago. Sony is killing it now and PlayStation is making the brand money. They don't sell consoles at a loss and the ps4 is on track for ps2 sold numbers if they keep the momentum.

    • +1

That alone will stop me getting one.

  • +6

One person's trash is another person's treasure. I've had mine for a week and while yes it's a novelty item with a likely short shelf life. I've still found it fun to play and have already completed a few of the games. It's just like playing a system from the 90's……. on a current day tv, I'm satisfied and would even buy re-releases of the same product with different games on it.

    • +3

Problem is, even if you don’t mind the odd selection of games, the original non dual analog controller, the choice of PAL games mixed with NTSC (and thus slower if you grew up with the NTSC one), the ommision of scanlines options etc it still have other problems besides that. The biggest one is the slowdown in some games (Looking at you Tekken 3) even compared to the original PAL version. Seems that the ReArm version of the open source emulation is not fully optimized and causing performance issue.

The hardware itself is beautiful and the way Sony designed the USB controller so that it would be similar to the original Playstation port is pretty creative (none of the flap nonsense from the SNES classic mini. But for a retro ornament is it worth $150? Maybe to some people but not to me

      • +1

As a geek I totally agree and I'd never buy one. But for the average punter this unit is totally playable.

  • +4

Better to support the Gamesmen if possible

    • I prefer service, not sure about Gamesmen but Amazon shipping is really fast. Even for standard Auspost parcel service, apparently, Auspost expediates all Amazon orders, like next day delivery. Usually with other seller with standard parcel, it takes almost a week but with Amazon, Auspost sure delivers.

      • I agree, more an idea for those in Sydney with local stores. Big fan of Amazon service too, just mindful if they kill off the competition, prices go up

      • My experience of gamesmen is that their shipping is slow. Amazon is amazing. Just will suck when there is no competition left.

  • Xbox does backwards compatibility for free, Sony charges you $129

    This is junk.

    • +1

Xbox were the assholes who tried to make the Xbone One an always online console. They back flipped on it however the damage had already been done.

      • +1

Still, actions speak louder than words :)

      • +2

        How is that relevant today?

      • +1

Sony were going to do the exact same thing but back-flipped at the last minute too.

  • +2

Was so looking forward to this and sony just royally screwed up. The games list is pretty pathetic imo. A deal is a deal nevertheless so I upvoted. Cheers OP.

    • +1

A deal is a deal nevertheless so I upvoted.

      Lol. Did you?

  • Buy only if you are a collector and you are going to put it behind glass and never play it. If you are thinking of buying this for playing I highly suggest you don't

  • There is a price point for these things so dual shock would likely never be, the possible titles are also bound by legalities

But the choice of a cheap SoC and having to resort to very basic emulation and the lack of any advanced system options is not cool or reasonable

  • +1

Who is the maker of this A$$hole gimmick, Sony?
Have they gone down to that level to make a few bucks now?

This is no different to some Raspberry Pi equivalent running an emulator and some preloaded roms with a flashy case.
The entire thing probably costed them $10.

Im getting sick of this NES, SNES, PS minis.

I'm yet to find 1 person who's really loaded Alex Kidd in Miracle World and hellbent on finishing it.

    Typical scenario of purchaser:
Opens the box > plays each of the 20 titles for 1min-4mins > has a chuckle and points to his/her nostalgic partner at how the game has now evolved > packs it up and it stays in a long lost cupboard or ends up on Gumtree.

    • +4

*ends up on gumtree where it receives multiple low ball offers from people who don't reply back

      • lol…

yeah, people just interested in throwing a crappy price with no intention of buying

  • for those who want to give making their own a crack:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2gbRe8bOsY

  • As an ozbargainer this seems counter intuitive to other methods of playing ps1 games.. I mean we talk about vpn and torrenting on this site so emulators and rom sites I assume aren't too far off.

Also you can squeeze way more performance out of a pc ps1 emulator than this replica garbage.. Maybe at $20 but not for $100+ definitely unless you are a hardcore die hard fan.

  • I thought tony hawk pro skater was a classic and it’s not included.
    Or was that on ps2?

    • It was on the PS1 myself and a mate played it heaps back in the day.

      • It was a great game.
        Odly not included with this.

    • +1

Licensing if the music would have been a nightmare unfortunately.

  • +1

Honestly this is just a poor cashgrab you may as well set up an emulator yourself even if it's 'pirating'. I don't think Sony deserves the money for this poor abomination.
