I believe using Rewards points on XBox Live Gold 12 months membership is always the best way to use your points cost-effectively.
Usually 29,000 points for Rewards level 2 users, right now it is 24,000 points for level 2 users.
Has been discounted sporadically before, so if you have the 24,000 points now is the best time to cash them in.
1-month and 3-month also discounted.
Ends 15th of January, so a little bit of time to make up the points if you're short. :)

  • Nice one, was expecting this soon, redeemed, cheers

  • How do people get so many points? I have like 6,000 and buy all my games digitally. I'd like some rewards, but feel I'm not getting the points I should be from my digital purchases (probably around $600 a year).

I get into work early each morning, make a coffee, go to the Rewards site and claim the 3-4 10 point bonuses. Often there is also a 30 point quiz.
Then you can get 3 points per search on Bing up to 102 points (you can do this just by typing in a long sentence into the search bar and then deleting 1 letter at a time and researching, makes it very quick). Then you can use Google Chrome and click F12 and set the screen size to a mobile phone, this tricks Bing into think you are on a mobile device, you can then do another 20 Bing searches for 60 points.
You can get 220 - 250 points a day doing this method and takes me about 5 minutes max.
You can get over 50,000 points a year doing this only 5 days a weeks, so if you wait for these promos you can get 2 years free Xbox Live Gold every year without too much effort.

      • Wow that's dedication

        • +3

Seems a bit crazy when you type it out.
But you get a knack for it and it's a brainless task, and I'm just sitting at my desk talking with co-workers for those few minutes anyway so it doesn't even really feel like a chore and saves me a bit of cash each year. Considering I also pay for PS+ and only play a couple of games on XBox I don't like the idea of not getting Live Gold for free.

          • +2

@solidsnek: Its not crazy, I do it as well & have not paid for Gold since rewards points came out. I actually start off with the bing search page & click the news items…which keeps me up to date with current events a little :)

            • +1

@waderr: Exactly! I actually think my general knowledge has improved doing the quizzes as well :)

        • Seems like a lot of work.

I only just started collecting points (only 9k so far) so I won't be able to get it this time, but its what I am doing rewards for.

No need to switch to chrome the F12 developer console also works on Edge, there is an emulation tab which allows you to emulate a mobile device. I only use edge for microsoft rewards.

Another tip is to search for "h element" the result will give you a right arrow which searches for the next element in the periodic table, has the advantage of you knowing how many searches you have done by the element's number. So I click next til 34 elements then switch to mobile emulation for another 40 (74th element).

there is currently something you can do to get "double rewards" for mobile searches (so 40 searches instead of 20 for mobile), its on the rewards site somewhere, it involves setting the default search engine in chrome mobile app briefly (you also get a bonus 500 points for the unlock of it)

        • Thanks for the element tip - seems like a good way to rack up the searches and boost your knowledge to boot.

          • @grizzle: In Edge just create a folder of bookmarks then just right click and select open all- desktop searches done.

      • "typing in a long sentence into the search bar and then deleting 1 letter at a time and researching"
Hmm…. no wonder Bing search is not getting smarter, people use it to reseach mumbo jumbo wording :P

      • I follow a similar ritual. Tumble out of bed and stumble to the kitchen. Pour myself a mug of ambition and yawn and stretch and open Edge Browser. 12 token Microsoft Edge points, 90 Desktop Bing, 120 mobile Bing points. Minimum 30 extra points (50 points on days with quiz) for the Daily Set. Then what ever happens to be in the Extra Activities. Also the occasional Thematic emails they send out.

You can also set Edge to "Windows Mobile" mode. I've tried that a few times but at least for me its not as quick and easy as just picking up the phone and using Edge browser on there. I have a random Bing Bookmark (currently "Xbox One X Deals Australia") that I open, then "open in new tab" all six suggested searches on that page. Switch to one of those tabs, and repeat the process. Once I have the 120 points I use the "close all Tabs" in the tabs menu so I'm ready to go again for the next day.

Usually all this can be done so quick once you have the routine nailed down its only around five or so minutes a day. I have no problem giving Microsoft five minutes a day to pay for my yearly Gold Subscription.

    • You make around 7,000 a month just by doing all the daily tasks and searches on desktop and mobile. It only takes about five minutes a day and for me it entirely covers my Game Pass subscription.

      • +1

Was annoyed when they removed the 12 month gamepass redemption, now only 3 and 1 months. 12 months was much more cost effective

  • Also remember you can transfer/receive some points (there is a monthly limit) to you're family members if you're short for this promo, which may help you reach the target by the end date.

  • 12 month sub for Live not showing up for me?
    Only 1 or 3 months

Edit: ahh you have to choose it then change it to 12 months…

    • Can you click into the 1-month reward and use the drop-down box to select 12-months?
      Edit: Just saw your response:)

      • :)

Now to see if i can get to 24000, currently just under 17000..
        i think i'll miss out :(

        • +1

There is a Microsoft Rewards App on XBox One that can contribute to the total.

Mostly the points are trivial, but I did pick up 5000 last month for getting 5 achievements on GamePass games, and I've 200 this month for getting an achievement on Vermintide 2 (on GamePass), and 150 for completing a survey. It all adds up.

        • I can't select 12 months either for some reason. I can only pick 1 or 3 months from the drop down box.

Also, you can link up to 5 accounts together as a 'Family' and share 5 thousand points between each person. Will definitely get you the 15,000 you need if you're in a crunch.

      • Is it just me or is only 1 month and 3 month available in the drop-down now?

        • I did see that a couple of days ago…
But i thought that maybe it only showed 1/3 months as that was all i had points for..

But now that my wife has created an account, and i've checked, that doesn't work out that way as she can only see 1/3 months as well (not enough points for either)

          • @Krondorf: I submitted a question to the rewards program and they said…

"Hi, this is Grace from Microsoft Rewards Support. I am here to help you with your Service Request ########.

I understand that you no longer see 12 Month XBOX Live Gold Membership reward option via the Microsoft Rewards Redeem page. Let me help you on this

Due to an overwhelming demand for the Microsoft Gift Card, Xbox Gift Card and Xbox Game Pass Hot Deal including the XBOX Live Gold Membership reward, we ran out of inventory and these offers have been temporarily removed from the redemption page. There is no specific date of when this gift card will be available again. We are sorry for the inconvenience. For the meantime, you can save up your points until these offers are available again via your Rewards Redemption page.

Please continue to check your dashboard in a daily basis for other existing offers you can take advantage of."

            • @bellybama: yeah… run out of digital inventory
yet i'm sure they can still sell it for $$

  • Does anyone have a macro program that will automate a browser Bing search ?

    • +1

Hypothetically speaking, if an aspiring software developer made something to do that, would you pay $5 for it? No subscription etc, just once off.

      • hmmm … maybe not

    • Maybe use AutoHotKey? Copy the script below into notepad after installing Autohotkey. Change extension of the saved notepad file and your script is ready. This script will open new tabs automatically with the search terms as whatever is after the "=" sign. Duplicate the rows with whatever search terms you want and as many number of tabs as you want to open. PS, you can install an extension to change the browser user agent and set up click coordinates so the script will click and activate the extension for you.

      Run chrome.exe https://www.bing.com/
      sleep, 5000

      Run chrome.exe https://www.bing.com/search?q=Alpha1
      Run chrome.exe https://www.bing.com/search?q=Alpha2
      etc

  • yep I've got the next 2 and a half years of gold pre-paid on bing points. Makes me laugh when deals are listed for 12 months of playstation plus for like 60 or 70 dollars when xbox is free.

  • I don't even have a Xbox One X yet, but I want to buy one soon, but now I'm aware of points rewards, yeah why pay for GOLD???
So day 1 total I'm on 403. I'll slowly accumulate them everyday.
    Thanks OP.

  • Hey thanks for the post OP! Just wanted to know, after redeeming, is it sent as a code to your email or is it automatically applied to your account? If it's sent as a code, how long until it expires? Thanks.

    • I haven't redeemed yet this sale, but unless they changed it since the last time I redeemed it's emailed as a code :)
Edit: Codes don't expire and you can stack up to 36 months of Gold Live.

      • Oh ok that's great because my current membership is billed and ends in April. So this means I can redeem and wait it out. Thanks for the reply!

  • I've been living under a rock, never even knew about Xbox/Microsoft rewards. Hopefully never paying for Gold again once this subscription ends. Thanks to all the contributors, definitely learnt something valuable today!

  • 4300 left to get in about 2 weeks…
    hrmmm

  • And now it's gone altogether.. can't even get 1/3 months either
Hopefully just temporary while they 'restock' the 12 months for the last few hours before the price goes back up
