free is more than 40 years of service

  • I've placed an order with JBHifi but haven't got the item yet. Would they give my money back if I cancel it? I'll just get the one from Telstra

    • +1

Best to call JB and ask.

I have asked Uniquemobiles for a refund.

    • +1

      Yep

My today's experience - ordered Kogan and cancelled it after they changed spec. Went to JB and ordered GTab for $360. An hour later, this deal popped up and I think I might be one of the first lot to order it. Then went to JB for a refund. What a bloody Tab day! I'm glab that Telstra has come to the ozbargain party though.

      • Thanks Issh. I'll go and cancel my order with JB tomorrow

  • Will this deal last until tomorrow? I want to go into the shops and have a look at it first. There is a JB right next to telstra shop around the corner, im sure one or the other will have stock :)

    • +3

Yes it will (unless they ALL sell out today)

i really hope ur serious. its good to see you guys here and hope there are more deals to come. not the T-Touch tablet thou!

  • Would it be a good ereader (among its other uses)?

    • +2

I initially wanted a tablet to use as a multi-functional ereader, but I was given a Kindle. In the end, I'm happy that I didn't go with a tablet as an ereader since the Kindle's battery lasts SO much longer. I only need to charge the Kindle once a month, so that's something to consider.

      • bla bla bla whatever…. angry birds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • +4

Depends entirely on your tolerance for an LCD screen for reading. Try out an e-ink reader somewhere if you can. For reading text there is no comparison, LCD is very poor. e-ink is just like paper, itcan be read in sunlight, and again, this can't be overstated, it looks like paper. The battery of a kindle lasts a month and it's incredibly light and small, so you don't feel like you're carrying an electronic device around, it's literally a book with one page where the text rearranges itself when you 'flip' a page; in fact that is essentially how e-ink screens work.

With LCD there is a backlight and it is useless with reflections and in sunlight. e-ink readers are absolutely awesome for reading text based books. For EVERYTHING else they are horrible - pdfs, textbooks with diagrams, magazines, picture books, photos, newspapers, internet browsing.

If you read books (not a lot, if you read at all) get a kindle, they're so cheap now you won't regret it. And then at this price also get a Galaxy Tab :)

    • If you read a lot of PDF, buy tablet or Kindle DX

  • thanks OP, just ordered 1 :) so happy i missed JB and uniquemobiles deals

I'm just waiting for the day an ad comes out with two oldies sitting in a nursing home discussing the christmas presents they got from their grandkids. One of them got a sewing set (female) where the male gets given a 'tablet' computer…they sit around discussing their gifts and the male says, 'Hmm…they call this a tablet, it looks a little too big to swallow…maybe it's meant to be a suppository'…you can end this how you want to. I'm sure if your like me your a little twisted :P

    • Wow.

      • +1

I haven't given away ad campaigns and product ideas to more corporations than I can count on one hand for nothing! (They don't pay…but oh well, I can't be stuffed starting up opposition to their business just to float one idea).

        • Have or haven't? I'm guessing you mean "have". I guess there are the thinkers and doers. The thinkers create and the doers collect. :)

  • Great deal. Just ordered one. What are the best deals for getting these hooked up to Telstra? I live in a regional area so Telstra, like them or not, is the best option for coverage. Prepaid or plan? Any advice appreciated.

  • ok silly question but i was thinking of getting the ipad2 for missus.
is the galaxy worth it over the ipad2?
i would like peoples opinion before i buy this :)

    • +1

      ok silly question

      der…. prankster

      serious now

is the galaxy worth it over the ipad2?

depends what her needs and wants are

like what is she after in a tablet

The iPad cannot make any calls
      Whilst the Galaxy can

the iPad has more apps than the Galaxy

      Galaxy is smaller than iPad

    • If she already has apps she likes on the iTouch, and likes iOS, I would seriously consider sticking with the ipad.
Most of the itouch apps will work with the ipad - so no need to buy new apps.
And if you buy new apps, often they can be used on both itouch and ipad.

There's a definite learning curve for the Android system.
I tried the HTC Desire but found the Android App store a very poor comparison to the Apple App store ( this was some months ago).
I think many would agree that the iPad is more easy to use for non-tech people than Android.

Still, great Galaxy Tab deal. I'm still agonising whether to give Android another go….

    • +2

I didn't get the ipad2 not just because I was tight (ok, I am almost an apple fanboy/girl). Ipad is just a bit too big for all my handbags and 7" is perfect for me - to carry in my bags that is.

      • +2

You don't know what you are boy or girl?

        • I haven't seen an official definition of "apple fangirl". ;)

  • Tried to refrain from grabbing an iPad 2 (because want to wait for the iPad 3 with retina display expected to arrive end 2011 or early 2012) and this deal comes just in time. Have had a hard time fighting with myself on the previous deals from JB & UniqueMobiles, but finally gave up on this one. SOLD!

And no, I will not kick myself if another deal comes up tomorrow at $250. OZB, maybe.

  • Thanks OP +1 very nice deal. My sister needed one and just ordered it.
Nice price, doesn't matter if its not honeycomb. Its decent tablet for that price!
Just use bluetooth handsfree to over come the phone call issues

  • +3

I heard there is an iPad 62 that's meant to be coming out in 2078.

Even though I'm not a fan of Samsung's aftermarket support…I'd seriously consider one, something about not feeling like Steve Job's personal bitch appeals to me…

    • +2

No, wait for the 63…I think it's gonna have USB! :p

      • +2

I think it's rumoured to be propriety USB port though

    • Even then I bet it still won't support Adobe Flash 78

  • Are there any custom ROMs available for the Galaxy Tab? I really love Cyanogen on the Nook Color, but on the Tab's hardware it would be even better.

  • I'm really tempted to buy this because of the price, but, it looks too big to carry around? Can this replace a mobile effectively?

    • +1

of course it can, watch this…

      • +1

stumo u love that link now dont u. :p

        • Trigger Happy TV never gets old.

      • Awww… I don't want to look like that guy when talking on the phone :(

I just measured my pocket, it is not wide enough.

        • +3

my pants have no problem fitting another 7" object :P

    • it's 7 inches

so about the size of a normal eReader

  • does it come with any accessories? or just tablet / power supply/usb cable? (ok no usb functionality unless get an adaptor i suppose)

  • +4

I love how Gumtree has tons of these at $350-500 brand new in box…

  • +4

I have a gut feeling that I'm gonna get negged but……

Telstra when are you going to drop your ridiculous price on HD7???

    • Tel$tra should drop the price on HD7. Next gen dual core phones are coming…

  • Yet to be seen… Vodafone and Optus… They should be offloading their Galaxy Tab stock soon. Vodafone one might come with a navigation kit - which should be interesting.

Vodafone's new Samsung 10v tab running Honeycomb is cheaper than Samsung Galaxy Tab (online prepaid prices). This certainly does not make much sense.

  • "Voice, SMS/MMS capable"

Can anyone verify that it can be used as a mobile straight out of box without headset, hacking etc? May look silly but just want to know if its possible…

    • It should be. Otherwise would be nonsense at all.

    • Yep, we stuck in a simcard and it called it immediately. Speaker is on the bottom of the tab and is handsfree volume (loud)

  • I'm 3 customer at the moment, It says the galaxy tab is unlocked, so if I put my 3 Sim card it, can I make a phone call and browse on internet? Thx.

    • +5

if you are in that 0.0001% of australia that gets signal on 3, then yea.

    • YES,it should be work!

      • thanks, but how can I confirm that, give telstra a call? worried about the customer service guy will angry.

        • Lol. Yell at them if they dare to do so. I was quite too much polite in the past and things just didn't work well. Then when I get angry first, everything has changed. Sometimes we have to raise our voice, more or less. Even if u don't wanna do so.

        • how can I confirm that

it should work as it is unlocked

    • I'm on 3 and I can make and receive calls and SMS.

  • i just ordered.. any can recommend good accessories for this? like cover/stand or dock? thank you

    • Also Bluetooth handset :)

  • now wait for it to drop down $199 :P
nice post rep, welcome to OzB! :)

    • what happen if it doesn't?

      • Too good to be true, at least at the very moment lol.

      • +3

then $199 stay in my pocket :)

        • Best self-motivation today lol lol lol.

    • +2

Thanks. Even we can't predict our own pricing:)
      Gerd

  • I'm thinking of getting one of these just to watch the IPL cricket. Can anyone tell me if this will play the youtube IPL cricket telecast and what the video quality is like?

    • probably and youtube quality so… crap.

  • +13

Lets see if Catchoftheday buy 2 of them and have a Crashathon 12 hour advertising bait sale next week!

  • +2

please every1 on ozbargain stop posting more deals. come back after 2 weeks. no one has any money left after this crazy week of tablets.

    • glad i didn't online in the last few days or my $ all spend on these deals :)

  • I think this does not have HDMI out and does not play 1080p media files? Since I want something that can be a media player too (hooking up to the external HDD and output to large LCD or projector), a dropad / herotab may be better. The downside is screen is only 800x480 and quality may not be as good as this Samsung

    • it supports hdmi with an adaptor

  • +2

This is so going to get ozbargained soon :)

  • Wow over 4500 clicks and 30 fb likes

  • Damn it!!! I couldn't get one from JB Hi-Fi for $360 a week before…
and I told myself that it is also cheap for having it from telstra for $408.
    Then I think for a long time…consider so much…
    decided to buy it finally…
    but it's only 3 days….3 days later, it's price drop from $408 to $299!!!
What should I do??? Pls give me back my $109!!!
I've opened it and it caused the stickers to become ruined…
How could I get back my $109??? Who can tell me??
I am so angry and upset right now…

      It's part of life,
You win some, you lose some

nothing you can really do, except to go and ask for a refund

    • +3

is the serial record on the receipt?
if not buy another and return the sealed one :)

      • +1

This trick works as long as the serial is not on the receipt, I have done it many times :P

        • +1

Unfortunately, the unit I bought from JB Hifi yesterday has the serial on the receipt :(

  • Question, would it ever be possible to root this to run Honeycomb?

    • nothing is impossible

  • telstra with a great deal! wtf, who would have thunk it…

  • Just ordered one. Hopefully it'll arrive before the Easter break :)

  • Just browsing through the specs listed here and the telstra page, I dont see anywhere where its says it 3G supported. I know a rep posted its 3G on page one but can anyone confirm it??

    • it accepts a sim card, so what do you think?

  • +3

Nice to see the big T can offer consumers a nice deal! Keep it up.

  • +3

    I caved.

I hope coming from my gf's iPad that I won't find the 7" screen too small.

Ah well - at least if I decide to upgrade I'm sure the loss won't be too much if I sell it off in a few months. Plus, if you're a business, the net cost after tax and gst will be only $190 =)

Too bad this is $1 under the $300 threshold for claiming back GST for those traveling overseas!

  • +2

How long till this is sold out o.o

    • +1

Hard to say - depends on demand. We've had very good response since we launched it yesterday.
      Gerd

      • how much have u sold so far of ur inventory 30%? 50%?

        • +1

          Can't say :)
