      • Just saw a posting for deal at hi-fi for this for same price….and some are reporting that you can get it for even cheaper in some store.

        Is it the same "deal"

        • yep $279

  • I bought on 21 April 2011 (Thursday) at around 8PM from JBHifi Plenty Valley (Westfield). Before leaving home, I asked them to hold one for me but they said that they still have plenty in stock. On Friday, I showed it to my relatives and they wanted me to get some for them as well.

So I returned today to JBHifi Plenty Valley and was about to buy 4 for my relatives. I was told that I can only get 2 as there are only 4 left. I said fine, but when the shop assistant was about to create the receipt, on their computer screen there was somekind of message screen from the main office to stop selling all Samsung Galaxy Tablet and the SKU has been made inactive. The message dated 20/04/2011 (Wednesday) around 4PM. Then I said, funny, I just bought one on Thursday night after 8PM (so the SKU was still active on Thursday) and she said, "Well, obviously someone wasn't supposed to sell it to you at that time anyway".

So, she said she can't proceed with the purchase cause she doesn't wanna get in trouble. Fine. I couldn't argue more.

I then went onto to Telstra Store in Plenty Valley and refused to sell it to me because they originally bought the store at a higher price and said that it is "Online Offer Only". I then asked, "Is this a direct Telstra Store or franchisee?" and the shop assistant said, "This is a Telstra Store". I then left and checked the Plenty Valley store number on Telstra website and it showed something with 039xxxxxx (instead of 131800) so it must be a Telstra franchisee. So, I left and went to Northland Shopping Centre and both Telstra Stores (131800 number) were already out of stock. JBHifi Northland was also out of stock.

It seems that the best way is to get it online as they provide free delivery anyway.

Don't bother walking into JBHifi only to be refused due to that message in their circular page in RED BOLD texts (I read it myself).

I tried calling 131800 but they weren't able to help. They can deliver it faster to me if I want to buy Galaxy Tab on PLAN. For outright, I have to find it in Telstra Stores or Online.

Sounds like a stupid effort for me driving around looking for one but I had to get one soon cause some of my relatives are leaving overseas.

    • Sounds like a stupid effort for me driving around looking for one but I had to get one soon cause some of my relatives are leaving overseas.

Umm yeah, it does sound pretty stupid! I hate to be the bearer of commonsense here, but did you ever think to give them yours & just buy another one for yourself online at your leisure???

For someone so scathing of others' "cathartic bitching" in other threads, you might want to check out the walls of your own glass house mate! :)

  • Just got this for today's order:
We’re sorry to say we’ve sold out of the item you’re after and have placed an order that should arrive at our warehouse shortly.
We’ll email you as soon as the stock arrives.
If you would prefer to cancel your order, please call us on 1300 131 113.
We apologise for any inconvenience this delay may cause.

So will Telstra restock it or not?

    • Also got the same email from them.. ordered mine on Thursday after being told at the Nunawading JB Hifi that ALL of their stores are out of stock. Hopefully this isn't going to be a long wait…

      • same here, I odered yesterday, got the email today. :(

anyone has any info regarding the restocking?

have rooted and upgraded to Overcome 1.6 - using Z4root and it works like a charm.

BUT i didnt save a complete copy of my Telstra default ROM … i just used Titanium Backup for keeping the apps and neglected to manually save a copy of all the .apk files in "/system/app"
so i cant restore some of the saved Apps. I have most but not all of them restored.

Yes there was a lot is bloatware by default - but a lot is good stuff: like a 30day free subscription to the Australian etc. And a few other optional System Apps that are missing now.

Remember .. to port ALL of the apps you need to manually make a copy of the .apk files in /system/app, AND have a properly saved Titanium Backup of all of the original Apps.

    • Is installing Overcome worth it? I've rooted my tab but I'm not sure what the benefits of installing Overcome are.

      • I thought it was worth it. Runs a lot better, got rid of all the bloatware that was on it from Telstra etc. The keyboard is so much better.

        • yeah i put 1.6.1 onto mine, so far it's really good.
The Overcome rom's are already rooted so dunno why u would need Z4root. Z4root thankfully still works on the stock Telstra rom though.

        • You don't need to install Overcome ROM to make it faster. You can simply install the kernel (NoOC/UV) and I already achieve Quadrant score of 1800. That way you don't lose the apps that you want to keep.

However, to remove the bloatwares, I used Titanium Backup to delete the Telstra stuff.

The custom ROM only bring you that extra features such as improved widget menu, etc.

  • Bought one today from the Telstra shop in the new Westfield at Sydney Tower. Had no issues buying, but they were out of the leather case.

  • It really is amazing that this is still in stock. I have to say though, after using and playing around with it, it has made me seriously consider getting the new upcoming tablets, probably the next samsung tablet after 10.1. Telstra's network and reception that I have experienced will make me purchase with them thanks to this deal.

  • my Galaxy Tab is refusing to startup… any ideas?

    • Did you charge it before use. I know its a stupid question but you never know. Do you have anything showup on the screen at all >?

    • press and hold the VOLUME DOWN button, and then briefly press the POWER button.

    • I have the same issue.. :( not sure if it's a common problem of galaxy tab… planning to return it tomorrow.

      • where are you returning it to??? I want it!

  • press and hold the start button…… takes a while to warm up…..

This device is gold. Have not looked back! Rooted with Z4root then used titanium backup to backup then uninstall all the bloatware. I also recommend droidwall for a firewall. This will stop all the chatty programs and also increase your safety from potentially un safe programs that you may side load from talking to the internet without your permission.

  • went instore today at Westfield Kotara (not franchise) and they would not sell at $299… I had to buy a 2 year data pack at $20 per month…

  • sold out online

JB Hi-Fi offered a free belkin case ($20) for the tab and reduced the tab to $279. Is it possible to get one from Telstra eventhough the tab was purchased a week ago?

  • Stock is running pretty low everywhere.
Telstra Life in Swanston St Melbourne CBD say they are sold out today and not getting any more, but I went to the Melbourne Central T Store and they said they have a "fair few" in stock, so I got one for a friend.

  • just purchased one online on this Monday, online sold out one Tue/Wed. OMG so lucky…

btw, my oder was just shipped.

  • What is the best sim card and data plan to use with the Galaxy? Anyone tried the iPad telstra 12months microsim (+ adapter) on this?

    • I bought a $2 telstra prepaid sim and just phoned them and told them i had a microsim for an ipad and the guy activated it for me them i just charged it online works great you cant beat there speed

As mentioned before, I use TPG in mine (BTW I am just a user, nothing to do with TPG!)

      http://www.tpg.com.au/mobile/plans.html
      Medium $18.99 per month.

Includes 1 gb data / month, plus $330 calls per month, etc. No Contract.

Gives you data and calls and you are not locked in.

TPG uses Optus, so to configure use: http://optusau.wdsglobal.com/

    • I got a Telstra prepaid mobile broadband sim, and recharged the $150 option for 12 months/10gb. Paid $120 with HN 20% off.

  • I got the last one @ collins Street Telstra, so happy with my tab!

  • still haven't received mine :( (in brissy)

  • Who has one but doesn't wanna use it, could u plz sell it to me? Im willing to pay round 300 bucks. In sealed box plz.

  • If anyone is Brissy is after one there were about half a dozen left at the Telstra shop in the city (Queen st mall) yesterday arvo. I picked one up from there yday even though I ordered one online last week as I didn't want to wait any longer. For ppl who ordered online did you guys receive an email from Telstra after you received it? The thing is that I received an email today saying "We’re glad to tell you, your item has now been delivered to the address you gave us" even though mine hasn't been delivered yet (also received an email from them about 4 days ago saying that my item has left their warehouse so I thought it would get delivered by Friday but nothing turned up). I am thinking that they got the wording wrong (ie is now being delivered rather than has now been delivered) but just wanted to ask others here who have received theirs whether they received a similar email from Telstra after receiving the package. Tried to contact them on the phone but it seems their online ordering inquiries department is closed. Telstra just makes every thing so damn complicated do they even have a way of at least tracking online orders?

spoke to someone at JB hifi marion,(SA) today. She said they are expecting stock next week, and it will be priced at $299…..

The only app i wanted to keep from stock Telstra unit was the Australian. I have a link somewhere to reinstall app if u havent sorted that out give me a holla n ill dig it up for you

    • +1 that - I've really been enjoying reading the Australian on the tab. Too bad its only a 2 month free trial but I'll likely renew it.

    • Can you get rid of all the Telstra Apps? Do you have a link how to do it?

      • You can delete a bunch of them - just go into the apps folder and hold down with your finger on the app you want to get rid of. Drag to bin - I think that is how from memory.

  • Same here warcom I think it's only a few bucks a month after subscription runs out right??

    • Can't remember but if you go into the options and click on subscription it'll give you the prices. Its pretty cheap though considering it is the full paper.

  • I just love the easy offline reading

  • Got one yesterday at HN at $299, doing a price match. A very nice tab to read books, internet and games and also skype. Good music and video quality.

    • could you post the receipt plz?

      • How to post a picture? I bought it from waurn pounds, 33 princes highway, vic

        • +1

Use an image sharing site like Photo Bucket or Image Shack. Then just post the link.

        • You could even use OzBargain's media uploader if you really need to:

          http://upload.ozbargain.com/

  • The product has disappeared from Dick Smith Electronics Online (prior to them discounting it, or perhaps ahead of them discounting/clearing their stock?) Nothing in the latest catalog though.

    Telstra: Sold Out
    JB HiFi: Sold Out

Looks like (HN) pricematching is all that's left?

    • Martin place HN refuse to price match!!! Any solutions?

      • buy one from somewhere else?

        • Where can we buy???

      • +3

Could be worse. The salesman blasted me at my local HN when I asked what their best price is, and ended up ranting on about customers and why do they come asking to price match if they can get it cheaper from somewhere else, just get it there. And that people only ever ask for price match when there's no stock or color. He instantly knew I was aware of the JB price and added if I can get it cheaper, then get it, but JB HAS NO STOCK. And I'm not getting it any cheaper.

I also asked if he was aware if they might be clearing them out any time soon, which got me blasted again. "Why should i tell you that!? So you dont buy it now!?" bla bla

Also, according to this salesman, their Tabs aren't the same. The Telstra version can only run Telstra Apps on it, and he knows because he spoke to someone from Telstra…

Funny. I didn't even bother arguing, because you can't win with an idiot. :)

        • Hardly Normal "Best Price Guarantee" my ass.

  • The galaxy tab will get the honeycomb update

    Where is the official news

    • Where on Earth did u hear this ?

      • Don't think will be true… it is against profit making mind… lol

        • Agreed, telcos seem to be saying they are testing 2.3 I really doubt this device will get honeycomb. More likely to get 2.4 when that is released.

  • Now that is 10.1v is around - and other models soon to come - everyone will be flogging their older stock cheap cheap.

    • I think they flogged too much because it looks all sold out…

Do you think there will be another chance? I hope so……

    • Doubt it. Where is the 7" tablet successor?

  • Isn't there any way to buy this for $299 outright anymore? I'd really like to buy this….

    • check JB hifi online my friend!

    • +1

      Thank you Keef!
However I've been aware of that URL but I couldn't find any sort of "Order" or "Add to cart" button. Have I missed something? Or does it mean I have to visit a local store? I've visited every local JB Hifi store (and Telstra, DSE of course) near my house and workplace and none of'em had Galaxy TAB any more but just said that it was all sold out in Australia. If you know of a store which has this for around $300, please let me know. Thank you again!

    • Eventually this link has got expired… Any idea to purchase this for this price?
