Original POOLTIME 20% off 118 Stores on eBay Deal Post

First post — hope I'm doing this correctly!

My eBay watcher just picked up this deal from Sony Australia's store on eBay.

Although box damaged, but it's a relatively low price compared to deals that have been posted on OzBargain!

  • would LG B8 65inch better than this one? LG B8 is slightly cheaper at appliance central for now

    • How come nobody is comparing it to the C8 … is it universally accepted that the B8 is just about as good at the C8?

      • Yep - mainly just slower processor so can't do HDR + HFR at the same time. From what I'm reading on the net in reviews not much difference other than that.

Screen quality very very similar. (again, from what I'm reading….)

        • Why don't we need HDR + HFR at the same time? If I am using an Xbox one X, does it use both?

  • +2

    55" also available for $1920…

    • +9

      That’s subjective.

Sony wins (though not by a lot) in the categories that matter for a ‘TeeVee’ - i.e. image quality for movies and television, as well as grey uniformity, SDR and HDR. From reviews, the processor in the Sony upscales content to the native 4K of the screen better than LG’s offerings.

It also has better build quality than the LG.

Where the Sony falls down on is in input lag - much much worse than LG - so LG will be the better buy for people intending to do some gaming and/or use it with a PC.

If price is similar, the Sony might be better for its better image processing.

But if it’s a few hundred difference in price and LG is cheaper - then the Sony probably doesn’t offer a big enough advantage over LG to justify the higher price tag.

      • +4

This review is right. The input lag is a real deal breaker. So surprising given Sony make the PS4 and the input lag for that console is terrible compared to other OLEDs

Saying that, if you intend to NOT game on this TV, i'd pick it up over an LG (and I'm an LG fan here).

      • Advice:

Never buy any OLED tv for gaming.

        • -1

Why not? I'm looking forward to native 120hz 4k oled displays coming out this year.

        • For casual gamers are fine. OLED TVs are not that bad

    • +1

      Somy is better TV

      • If you only looking at the logo.

  • -2

    Box damaged = Cracked screen?

    • +3

Hahahaha that'd be a pretty expensive paperweight but I'm pretty sure it just means the box containing the items is damaged — unit itself should be fine.

      • +21

Purchased a few box-damaged items from Sony, and each one has arrived in pristine condition, including the box lol.

        • Imo box damage is just a way to classify the stock as eligible for write offs within the company.

        • If just box damaged…will probably be in perfect condition. All I have bought have come perfect. If refurbished beware! I've had to return 2 refurbished items to Sony before. Both defective.

        • +1

I used to work for a wholesaler and ‘damaged box’ was just a charade so they could clear stock direct to consumers super cheap and try not to piss off retailers that they wholesale to… but they’re not fooling anyone.

      • +1

A number of people reported cracked screens from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/428011 for a different model.

        • They weren't box damage stock. That just seemed like a dropped pallet off of a forklift because people were saying the boxes weren't unacceptably damaged, just the TVs cracked.

      • +2

It's also a way to stop Gerry Harvey having a whinge because the distributor is undercutting his prices.

    • from our a8f experience, there is decent padding inside the box to protect the screen. unless it was run over by a kenworth!

  • Mine was filthy screen and cracked ceen.

  • +1

Does Box damaged in any way reduce the warranty?

    • No only if its refurbished stuff

      • Refurbished has the same ACL rights as new.

My eBay watcher just picked up this deal from Sony Australia's store on eBay.

What do you mean by 'my watcher' ?

    • +2

I wrote a program to watch Sony Australia's eBay store and check every minute for "amazing deals".

Except… most of them were rubbish and just super jacked up prices before their seemingly always on, 20% off sales, so I never posted :)

      • API or scraping? Do you have to evade bans from eBay?

        • +4

          Scraping, a bit of regex.

          eBay doesn't ban… or at least I haven't been yet ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I have watchers on a few other things that I'm interested in too… I hope I don't get banned LOL

EDIT: Forgot to mention, I'm doing it unauthenticated and using AWS/EC2, so not a huge deal for me if I get IP banned.

          • @b-t: Impressive! :D

Would you mind sharing your work at all? I would really appreciate it. It's ok if you don't want to.
You can pm me if you don't want it to be public!

            • +1

              @polarq: Haha thanks!

Sorry but unfortunately, I didn’t design the code to be shared; a lot of things are hard coded :(

I’ll probably do a refactor later and I’ll let you know when I put it up on GH!

              • @b-t: That's all good. Thanks for that. :)

  • +4

    Good things for B8:

Better for gaming, less input lag, less ABL, better DV performance

    Good things for A8f:

Better sound (acoustic surface), better processor for image processing

    In short:

If you game a lot, or already have decent sound bar/speakers, if you prefer webos, not android TV, go for B8.

If you really need better sound from TV and do not want to buy any speakers/soundbar, if you want better result with low quality video (upscaling), then Sony

    • Thank you for the summary

I am a causal gamer on ps4, maybe playing 2-3 hours a week for nba 2k, would the input lag affect the gameplay at all?

Also I have a decent yamaha soundbar and it appears that A8F has a low TV stand position so if I put the soundbar in front of the TV, it will block part of the image in the bottom?

tbh, I am more into Sony (as brand reputation) but if i am so hesitate if I don't have an answer for the above 2 questions. Can any user please advise?

      • +2

If you are gaming at 4K/60hz the A8F input lag is an acceptable 31ms. However if gaming at 1080p/60hz, input lag is 47ms which is fairly poor and likely to be noticeable. For gaming you really want below 30ms if possible. Also your soundbar will definitely block view of this TV since the stand is very short.

      • If you not play fps or pvp then it's totally fine.

Not sure with sound bar location since I wall mounted it.

I own Sony a1e and lg old eg910 oled

DOES THIS STACK WITH THE 15% EBAY PLUS OFFER?

    • -4

Yes it does. What a bargain.

      • You Sure mate? Did you check?

      • lol nice troll

    • +1

      NO IT DOESN’T

  • +1

Took a look at the Sony ebay store and I see they have the UBPX700 4K blu-ray player (refurb) for $153.50. Seems a good price if you need a player for your new A8F.

    • +1

I’d say add some and get an Xbox :) that’s what I did anyway..

    • Thanks. Got the last one. Hopefully the refurbished condition isn’t too bad. Better than paying $348 at JB.

      • No worries. I picked one up too, delivery due this coming Wednesday. Was going to wait for the xbox one S to come back to around $200 like it was pre Xmas but decided I would go with this instead. I don’t need a gaming console.

        • Mine’s getting delivered from Toll on Monday/Tuesday.

          Response from Sony EBay:

Thanks for your enquiry. We ship our products with the major accessories that are critical for operation and in an “as-is” state. As such, minor accessories which are not critical for operation may not be included. Examples of minor accessories that may be missing include but are not limited to: batteries, FM antennas, product manuals, secondary remote controls (primary remote control will be supplied) and generic cabling/wires.

          • @ne-us: Reads like their standard response to all queries. A couple of those things would never come with a bluray player. As long as it works I'll be happy. Still have the standard sony warranty if not.

            • @herbo: Delivered today! Came with the original box which looked a bit crusty but player works fine.

The player had one or two light marks..came with manual, power adapter, remote and new batteries.

              • @ne-us: Got mine today. Looks like new to me, packaged that way anyhow. The box had a bit of wear on it but that could have been from the toll delivery guy. It has to be some sort of return though, had a “Sony Seconds” sticker on it and under that was what looked like a returns label dated 12/12/18. Anyway connected up and works well so far.

                • @herbo: Cool. Do you know how to connect the TV or 4K blu Ray player to a stereo which uses rca left/right plugs?

                • @herbo: Use headphone 3.5mm to rca cable to connect it to the L R inputs on a stereo and set the tv headphone out to fixed instead of variable.

  • I bought the 65" a1 witch is the previous model. It is a fantastic tv. And with the way they box them up you could run over it with a truck and it would still be ok ! This is a fantastic price !

  • -3

    75" pls

    • +3

      They don't make 75" A8F's

  • +1

Personally I don't like the design of the stand.

    • Really? Out of all the current models, I like this design the most.

      • +1

I prefer some space under the TV.

    • Yeap the space… so odd!

  • I am really interested in this deal. Its time to replace my five year old Samsung LED. Does anyone know whether I can purchase extended warranty from Sony for this tv ?

  • If anyone gets the A8F make sure you put the sound in Cinema mode, sounds so much better/louder!

  • Damn, I'm waiting on getting some cardboard to test screen sizes. Don't know if I can do 65". After 10.5 years, it's time for a new TV.

    • What size wall you putting it against/mounting? How far will you sit?

      • We sit 3.5 metres away, but my tv unit is 700mm tall and there's an aircon unit right above where the tv would go

        • Ah that sucks, great distance otherwise for 65".

        • 700 is the perfect height so only option is to move the aircon and ceiling up 300mm. You could install Atmos ceiling speakers at the same time.

          • @MITM: Don't have that space above the wall. Don't have high ceilings.

  • Thanks OP just ordered this TV.
Had my eyes on it for quite sometime and this is the best price..

  • +1

More than 10 available… how the hell they managed to have so many carton damaged? I have a feeling they might be a refurb items

  • Darn, doesn't seem to work with POOLTIME code anymore.

  • A good find.
This TV is a superceeded model now. (which makes no difference to its quality)

    • Well … not quite yet - the A8G has just been announced but no release date or pricing yet

  • eBay description says it’s refurbished?

    • Click on extra details… says just box damaged

  • Kind of unbelievable how many damaged boxes there are. I'd buy something like a receiver that's refurbished because they're modular and can be repaired 100% and work or don't. However with tvs it's a little subjective and variable because people return them for banding etc that someone else may accept. So I would never buy a refurbished tv except if you were very lucky and it was only a dead and replaced power supply. Don't know what's going on here with this deal just trying to help.

    • Agree. No way they have this many carton damaged stuff. Must be returns and since box already opened they call it carton damaged.

  • Think it's expired. Code does not work:(

  • +1

I own the 55" version of this… don't be afraid to pull the trigger, it's an excellent TV. It upscales average content very well, Netflix 4K dolby vision is some serious eye candy, really good sound quality (i'm finding it hard to justify a soundbar for this TV) and like many OLED TV's the blacks are true black (i.e. pixel is switched off)… only downsides are the remote (same quality as an entry level $600 Bravia TV), software is buggy but the features more or less outweigh a sometimes frustrating user experience (significant delays here and there).

    • Has the Oreo update been released here in Australia for the A8F?

      • Not as yet in Australia. It has been released on A1E in North America. So it is coming, but how long until it reaches Australia is anyone's guess.
If your adventurous others have had success using A1E Oreo update to update A8F. See video.
        https://youtu.be/OhlmBXugFk8

        • +1

That’s the update for the American model A1E though … may be a problem trying to install it on an Australian model A8F.

Might find it is missing Australian apps - like all the Australian catch up Tv apps

      • Not yet, but considering 2017 TVs are getting Oreo, 2018 TVs definitely will be getting Oreo.

  • Saw these in JB today, looked pretty damn good, actually better than the LGB8, although the E8 probably looked the best….which makes me conclude going into store to look at tv's seems pointless cos that's not what it will look like at home.

    • The B8 and E8 should of looked the same. Probably had one on different settings.

Edit- Just remembered the B8 has the Alpha7 and the C8/E8 the Alpha 9.

  • I’m so undecided, this TV or hang out for better pricing on the KD75x900e. Maybe the 75 OLED will be worthwhile waiting for. Can only imagine it won’t be in my price range.

  • Thanks. Missed the Sony 50% off deal last time. Ordered one and got confirmation it’s getting delivered on Monday or Tuesday.

  • Also worth pointing out that this Sony TV does not have USB HDD recording so you can't record/pause live Free-to-air TV (the LG ones do have this functionality)

  • Thanks OP - after vacillating between various TVs all of last year, finally settled on this one.

  • Marked as sent by Sony and there is a tracking number. Do we know who is doing the delivery.?

    Edit: post carriage TOLL

    • +2

If you have an SNPxxxx tracking number it’s from DHL
