      • +4

        hehe…fun boi.

    • How much?

    • +1

Yeah the Mi Pad 4 Plus is a much better option.

    • Enjoy your Chinese bloatware/spyware

        What about USA bloatware/spyware?
Do you still remember Edward Snowden?

You should know by now negative talk about xiaomi or Apple is not allowed in ozbargain… True or not.

      • easily removed with xiaomi.eu firmware if you're technical. For average joe, yes.

    • +1

      Lol.

Rather a poke in the eye than buy xiaommi junk

      • +1

It's not junk at all.. the products are cost effective

      • Xiaomi Mi Power Bank is great but for a tablet I would prefer the local warranty and Australian stock.

  • what processor is this , will it lag

    • +1

      what processor is this

      Octa-core 1.8 GHz Cortex-A53, 3GB of RAM.

      will it lag

Depends on what you are doing with it. But I doubt the average user would notice lag on it.

    • +1

This is a snapdragon 450, which is a slightly downclocked SD625. It will do fine for most things, unless you are playing the most demanding android games.

  • +2

Good Deal. I suggest, please update Title from 'Samsung Galaxy Tab' to 'Samsung Galaxy Tab A' for more clarity.

    • +1

Cheers. Thought I already did that, good pick up. (And I made mention of it being the 10.5, not the older 10.1 model.)

    • 'Samsung Galaxy Tab A'
There's already been a tablet with this name, it was the 10.1" 2016 model.
I owned it and it was a great tablet.
The new one is usually described as the 10.5" 2018.

  • +3

Family came to Australia for Christmas for many weeks. Nephew purchased this exact model while he was here, I saw it in operation day and night through various apps and games. Seemed super impressive I thought at the time.

Problem with my 2012 Nexus 10 still working is I can't jump in on the latest tablets 'cos this one still works well! Damn Samsung for building it so well!

    • +1

      Try jumping on

      • +2

        It worked!

        • Great. Now add to cart > PELECTRO > check out.

    • I have this same problem. My Nexus 10 is still working (although starting to have battery issues) with this tablet be much more of an upgrade? I am really only looking to get a new tablet so games will run fast.

      • +1

Yes, its performance is mid quality of 2018, which outperforms the high performance of 2012 when the Nexus 12 was released. Despite the performance increase, Samsung Tab A 10.5 still isn't fast enough to play games like PUBG in Balanced mode as you'll get below 30fps, so you'll need to lower visual quality below Balanced mode.

Nexus 10 had an issue with using such a high resolution screen that it negatively affected its performance, though if you don't game and use Custom ROMs the Nexus 10 still runs smoothly (though no camera operations with latest Custom ROMs), due to coming with a massive 2GB of RAM at the time. Since I mainly use my Nexus 10 for book reading and studying from sites like Udemy, its still good enough.

        • People are actually playing the mobile version? While I haven't tried, the reason I haven't is I'd assume I'd prefer to poke my own eyes out with a spoon than try to play a shooter on a tablet. Am I wrong? Is that something I should be trying?

          • @syousef: I've never given it a second of my time, I would hate that, even if I paired a controller and got 60fps, which I wouldn't.

          • @syousef: Apparently the mobile controls are very usable. Only super fast building and sniping an issue.

        • -1

i wouldn't call he performance "mid quality 2018", the snapdragon 400 series is entry level, for the cpu it really is underpowered at this point:

          ~730 single thread performance geekbench
          https://www.notebookcheck.net/Qualcomm-Snapdragon-450-SoC-Be…

the nexus 10 from 2012 gets 800 single thread performance in geekbench:
          https://browser.geekbench.com/android_devices/91
          that's right its faster

ipad 2018 is at 3500, over 4 times faster, so spend an extra $100 for an ipad

          • @abctoz: You are intentionally only giving partial information.

Under multi-core its 3621 vs 1223, which is triple the overall performance for the Samsung TAB A 10.5. Then there is the improve, GPU, plus more faster RAM.

The iPad's multi score is 5930, so while faster than the Samsung Tab A 10.5, its about 65% faster, not 4x faster.

            • @FabMan: yes because the snapdragon 450 has 8 weak cores, you don't need 8 weak cores, that's more cores than most computers. the ipad achieves blazingly fast performance and a score of 5930 with only 2 cores, for a lot of tasks it is literally 4 times faster.

        • I use the nexus 10 for reading and kids games which is fine but some of the more ad heavy ones really slow it down. I can play real racing 3 OK on the tablet, but haven't done that in years. I do want to play Banner Saga, Space Marshals and Xcom but both are sluggy on this tablet so want something that can play those ok, bleeding edge FPS I don't need.

I thought my nexus was dying a year back but I did a factory reset and install minimum apps on it and it works great again. Just the battery life is woeful now (under two hours of constant use will drain it) but this is good for the kids as they don't crack it when the battery dies! (Daddy can't do anything, sorry! ;) )

  • I am guessing this is the 2016 model?

  • Damn, wish it had more than 32GB.

    • +1

I think this can be expanded.

EDIT: Yep it can be "micro SD slot that can be extended up to 400GB…"

      • The trouble is app/games. Using S7 32GB now, and I can't link anymore to the SD card, not all support it. I don't have many apps installed, some games now, like Fire Emblem Heroes is 1.7GB, quickly takes room.

        • Weird, I think these issues are long gone with the later version of Android. The SD card just becomes internal memory.

        • And hearthstone, which h was ~5gb last time I updated before I had to remove due to constant updates taking up room.

Really sucks all apps can't be run from the SD card.

          • @Skinnerr: I had to delete Hearthstone, can't wait to upgrade to the 128GB LG V30+ if I can get stock at JB!

  • has Dex? heard u can install linux on it.

  • Can you adopt sd card as internal storage on this

    • +1

No, not available on the installed OS, but you could potentially install custom firmware which would allow it.

However, you can transfer some apps to SD with it being treated as external memory. I have the 8 inch version and it let me transfer the Netflix app, but not the Stan or Amazon Video app.

There is a good summary of the reasons why this is disabled in the following thread, as the last reply https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-a/help/setting-s…

      • But then KNOX. Bye bye warranty

  • Pity they didn't renew the tab s lineup of was near to the perfect tablet with great specs and most importantly light weight at a very good price on sale.

The new one is still good but definitely not good for value.

    • +1

Tab S4 only released less than 6 months ago.

      • I know so 6 more months until I can realistically expect to see Tab S2 second hand $300 - $350 AUD prices.

        • I think you can already get them for that price. S2 is quite old.

          • @lostn: S2 definitely I have seen $250 AUD used easily on gumtree and ebay a few times before for the 8 and 9.7 inch model which is perfect size imho.

  • Can you claim TRS on it if traveling overseas?

    • $300 on single invoice, not sure if delivery is counted

      • +1

        Receipt should say $369. No?

  • Hmm I'm still glad I got the Lenovo from jb a few months back. Going pretty well except it probably won't get updates

    • Thing that bothers me about the Lenovo is that it lacks 1080p Netflix playback (It isn't certified by Netflix yet or something). Otherwise would have jumped on it.

      • Hmm, I hadn't noticed though I don't watch much Netflix on it. I'll have to check that out.

      • surprise, but this one lacks it too apparently.
You wouldn't expect a 450 (standard price) big-name manufacturer to do this, but yes they cheaped out.

        • I think this is going to be certified soon I read somewhere. Not sure when though.

  • MWC is right around the corner. And Samsung is launching a couple new Galaxy A tablets there.

Question is this is a pretty good deal so would the new announced tablets end up being better value at launch price or should i jump on this?

    • At this price not really. At normal price its beaten by both the Lenovo m10 and Xiaomi Mi Pad 4.

Please note the screen is old stone-age TFT technology.
I would expect IPS on every tablet to be as standard now.

    • Oh damn was going to get one with my JB voucher wont now thanks

    • +3

DISPLAY Type IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors
      Size 10.5 inches, 319.7 cm2 (~76.3% screen-to-body ratio)
      Resolution 1200 x 1920 pixels, 16:10 ratio (~216 ppi density)

      • +1
        • +2

IPS is a form of TFT. They are not competing technologies. TFT on its own does not tell you what type of panel it is. Even your iPad is TFT.

The three most common types of TFT LCD are IPS, VA, and TN.

Some more information for you: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thin-film-transistor_liquid-cr…

I have not seen a TN based tablet since the very cheap (under $100) tablets from 8-10 years ago.

          • @lostn: Yes, don't confuse TFT with TN. TB is cheap and crappy LCD (fast response but poor quality compared to other techs).

      • Thanks!

      • -2

Even the official Bing Lee link says it is TFT.
Look at the bottom of the screenshot.

      • Wish they tried to keep weight low or lower than previous models.

Heavy tablets can be a burden especially if they are mainly used for long bed viewing usage.

Weight is a huge determinator for me when choosing tablets unless it is used with a wall mount or something similar or upright conditions mainly aka laptop substitute/complement.

    • +2

I would expect IPS on every tablet to be as standard now.

It IS an IPS screen. It helps to actually know what you're talking about.

For a flat screen to not be TFT, it would have to be an OLED. Even the $2000+ iPad Pro uses a TFT screen. Apple has never made a tablet that wasn't TFT. And until iPhone X, it never made a phone that wasn't TFT either.

Your statement is equivalent to saying, this thing is only a car. But now you'd expect everything with four wheels to at least be a Mercedes Benz. Mercedes is a car, just as IPS is a form of TFT.

      https://mynexttablet.com/tablets/samsung-galaxy-tab-a-10-5/

The Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.5 has a 10.5-inch display with an aspect ratio of 16:10 and a full HD resolution of 1920 x 1200. Unlike higher-end tablets from Samsung, it is a standard IPS panel and not a Super AMOLED screen. The S Pen stylus is not supported.

      https://www.notebookcheck.net/Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-A-10-5-SM-T…

      Display: 10.5 inch 16:10, 1920 x 1200 pixel 216 PPI, capacitive, IPS, Gorilla Glass 4, glossy: yes

Samsung has equipped the Galaxy Tab A 10.5 with a 10.5-inch IPS panel that has a WUXGA resolution of 1920x1200 pixels. This equates to a pixel density of 216 PPI.

As long as there are not too many reflections on the display, users should not have any difficulties using the Galaxy Tab A 10.5 in bright surroundings thanks to its great brightness levels. The IPS panel further increases readability with its good viewing angles.

  • I need a tablet for taking notes on pdfs, watching video content, looking stuff up on the web and putting some useful pictures/notes into 1 note. Ability to add a keyboard is a plus but definitely not going to be used for word processing. No games at all.

Is something like this appropriate? My current laptop has been too large, heavy and loud (sounds like its about to take off). Budget would prefer under 500-600 or so, if there was no budget constraint I'd probably be thinking ipad pro or surface, but they feel a touch over the top,and pricey. Feels like the tablet market doesn't have a great middle ground.

    • It would do all that. The only issue I have found is that now I have an iPad 6, I cannot live without using the pen for jotting notes and making edits. This tab, unfortunately does not support the S-Pen. But if you can live without S-Pen, this would be fine for emails, videos, web surfing and taking notes. A keyboard could be used if it was a Bluetooth type. Not sure if it support OTG for wired USB peripherals.

    • +1

I would recommend ipad 6th gen or ipad pro 2017. I don't like Apple but Android tablets are really no competition for ipads in terms of apps and pen support. I bought a refurb ipad pro 2017 with 4g for $550 and I couldn't be happier with it.

    • Or if you want to pay more and need android, get the 10.5 Galaxy Tab 4. I think the best deal on this thing is through Optus on the $40 a month plan (I'd rather pay it off slowly over 2 years!)

    • unfortunately, ipad is your cheapest option there (+$100 for the stylus), and you can't load it with videos via expandable storage.

  • hmm bugger, I got a Lenovo M10 tablet from JBHIFI for $285 yesterday. Specs are similar but it has IPS, but the Samsung does have a much bigger battery.

    • +2

Yeah, other than camera it seems you are choosing between lighter weight plus better screen vs better battery life. It doesn't seem smart though to pair a Dolby Atmos speaker system with a crappy screen, Samsung I think dropped the ball on that. Same CPU, GPU and RAM, so they should perform just the same otherwise.

      • Yeah true, why even pair dolby atmos with something that can barely do 1080p?

        • Ok so the kidoz they use for restricted kids accounts is rubbish, and you can't add apps from the Play Store you've previously bought (I've given up trying). Hoping I can return to JBhifi and they price match the Samsung.

          • @su3050: Should just be able to add from your PC, both PC and Tablet are using the same account right?

            • @serpserpserp: If you use standard Google accounts via FamilyLink it does, but that doesn't have some of the parental controls that the Lenovo family offering (Kidoz) has.

  • Looking with 4g option & good to have s-pen. 10inch and local warranty. Is Tab4 is the option or any alternatives?

only Android. Not interested in Apple products.

    • Like someone posted in this thread android have really dragged their feet with tablet technology compared to Apple. One of Androids main selling points has always been affordability, so when apple comparable tablets are the same price as ipads it almost defeats the purpose of Android.

And I'm in no way an apple fan.

      • yeah unless ur android diehard its hard to argue with 470 dollar ipad vs say this at full RRP. But for 300 bucks its a good deal.
I know the pain, will never submit to Apple (not just HW cost, but all the apps/games).

    • Depends on your budget. Tab 4 is pretty old.

Tab S4 is significantly more expensive.

Chinese OEMs make some decent tablets at this price range, as long as you don't expect CPUs as fast as an iPad. But you can't get an iPad in this price range.

iPads are pretty decently constructed provided you don't mind walled gardens and artificial limitations.

  • If only it was S Pen compatible.

  • So been looking for basically an affordable media playing tablet. Would also do wifi browsing but probably not things like gaming. This stands out as the bigger screen the better for me. I sold my Ipad mini as it was just too small to watch things on.

So I know other have mentioned the screen above but the better screen on the newer models are a big price jump. Does this allow HD playback for Netflix & the like?

Also with expandable storage would I be able to add a few downloaded shows to an external SD card as other have pointed out you can't move all to an SD card and some things stay Internal.

    Cheers.

  • Can this be charged wirelessly? With a built in Qi device? Is there any other tablets that has a Qi capability?

    • No manufacturer in their right mind would add qi to a tablet. It'll take days to charge. Got get a qi pad from eBay for a couple of bucks.

  • wat is the catch seriously?

  • Thanks, was waiting for either Bing or Good Guys to have a sale.

  • Now showing as out of stock

  • Anyone know if this might come back in stock and still be at this price??
I was thinking about getting it earlier, then came back to this to find sold out :(

    • I too am interested in this product. Please post if you see more deals on cheap tablets. I like the specs:
1920 x 1200 16:10 resolution (best for viewing pdf documents & comics with standard paper ratios)
Aptx Bluetooth support for best auio quality in headphones such as the Bose/Sony noise cancelling models
IPS screen (not the best for movies but fine for everything else. OLED much massively inflate the product price).
microSD up to 512 GB(dedicated slot). partly compensates for only 32 GB internal storage.
      4 speakers corner placed
      Android 8.1 OS
      Headphone Jack
      USB 2 C connector
