Please do not mark this deal as expired without carefully checking for availability. MSY defaults to Victorian Online branch on its website and it is OOS there. But click the Stock Availability tab and there are many branches with stock.

    Erroneous OOS expiry removed.

  • Good deal, it's like $20+delivery at Kogan I believe.

  • +2

Shipping for me was $10.38, so a great deal of you can pick up, but only OK if you need delivery.

  • Just out of curiosity, what do people typically use this device for at home?

    • +19

As a switch. I don’t get the question. There’s only one thing it can be used for.

    • +10

Any device running wired Ethernet. TVs. Computers, consoles, router or to another network switch.

      • +32

To expand the number of LAN ports on your modem/router is probably what they want to know.

        • This. thanks

          • +9

@JungliChilli: Theyre like a power board for an Ethernet cable that you can daisy chain endlessly. So if you have 4 devices in one room you can run one cable to the room from your router, put a switch there then connect the 4 devices. You could then run one cable from the switch in that room to the next room over where you connect another switch.

            • @Cheaplikethebird: will my old wifi router do the same job? My older router has a wan port, if i disable the wifi, then = function of the switch?

              • @jjj123: Yep!

              • +4

@jjj123: Yes but might be only 10/100 not gigabit

              • +5

@jjj123: Maybe, it depends on the router.
Often, you'll need to put it into a "access point mode" or "switch mode". Otherwise it'll want to be the one & only router on the network, and that can cause you problems.

Check a guide like this for more details.

              • +7

@jjj123: yes, but you'll need to go into the settings and disable the "DHCP server" (otherwise it will try to give addresses to other computers/devices on your network and you get conflicts/errors)

            • @Cheaplikethebird:

              daisy chain endlessly

Awesome. This was the exact thing on my mind.

              • @tomsco: Recommended you do not do more than 3 links.
Plan your network better if needed.

                • @Magus: All good :)

Just have the one near my modem and need one for my computer and one for TV, so really I’m only adding one onto the initial one. But thanks for the head up.

        • so correct me if i'm wrong but my router is in a separate room and there's an outlet in the living room which I'd like to set up this switch. Do I just connect an ethernet cable to this switch in the living room and I can run the 4 other ports for my home theatre setup?

          • @cray: You are correct, if the other end of that outlet is connected to the router.

            • @alvian: Thanks - confirm it works :)

    • +2

Use it to link all my ethernet devices together instead of using my 4g router RJ45 ports. So I can turn off the router, swap SIMs without disturbing whatever I'm doing on the network.

    • +9

It is too lightweight to be useful as a doorstop. It doesn't work well as a thermal or an acoustic insulator due to the metal casing. Its power adapter outputs an uncommon 9VDC 0.6A and makes weird noises. Its LEDs don't stay lit and are too dim for room lighting. So this device is basically useless. Save your $14.

      • +2

That power supply was faulty. I recently had one of these TL-SG105 switches with the TP-Link power supply and it was completely quiet.

    • +4

I have a single cable running to my shed and then have 1 of these to connect 2 race Sims, PlayStation and a media pc.

      • You've been relegated to the shed too, huh?
        Poor us.

    • +3

I use my as a wind chime

  • +3

Good unit that is plug and play. Officeworks will price match.

    • Grabbed 4 from Brisbane cbd office works. $13.30 each

      • Any left? I was going to pickup at lunchtime :(

Otherwise can give you the $15 cash :)

    • Just did my rounds at Castlereagh and Hunter connection Sydney CBD officeworks and grabbed all of them. No more left at these locations so don't bother.

Now going to the officeworks at Wynyard to see if there are any.

  • Does this support POE?

  • +1

    $13 delivery sydney metro. Shocker.

    • -1

      Pick it up…?

    • +3

You think delivery is cheap? Have you tried posting anything with tracking lately, it's getting pretty expensive.

      • +1

Yes i have actually with Sendle, was cheaper and quicker than auspost. Nevermind, saves me from yet another ozb impulse buy.

        • 10.90 sendle vs 13 for MSY. Not a big deal, hardly a shocker you describe it as.

Yes if you volume ship 200 plus items a month you get cheaper.

End of the day courier franchises already get paid pretty crap compared to other industries, but I guess the income is comparable to any gig economy job.

          • @azukay: I dunno, i am an msy customer of many purchases so would like to see them improve it, my inner ozbargain reckons this item is quite small even with bubble wrap it'd fit in the small one under $7. I did it the other week sending a controller which pretty comparable size/weight.

  • Good to pair with Ubiquiti USG since it only has a LAN port

    • That's what I thought… But then… If you are into Unifi thing you probably wanna proper Unifi managed switch. ;) Then you are looking at $160-ish for 8 port… Ahhh…

      • I am using USG with dumb switch and AC pro. Works perfectly fine for me.

Why would you need a managed switch?

        • +2

          Home lab.

  • +2

Any good deals on small PoE switches?

  • +12

    $14

The difference between 1 and 4 is 3.

    Limit 3 per customer.

    Half Life 3 Confirmed.

    • +1

One day this joke will get old. That day isn't today. Have a +.

      • went over my head altogether

  • +1

I happened to be looking at this switch last night on Amazon, quite a few one star reviews. A few people reporting issues with VLAN if that’s what you’re planning on using it for.

    • +7

      VLAN with a <$30 switch let alone a TP-Link? Gees they're hilarious !!!

      • I also had issues with this switch and my GBICs

        • TP-Link are awesome if you want a dumb switch. Anything else? Go elsewhere as they're cheap for a reason.

      • Actually not as stupid as it first appears. What should happen when an unmanaged switch meets a VLAN tagged frame is undefined. Some drop the frame, some pass it through. See for example this reply: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Unmanaged-Switches/ingress-…

        • +1

Netgear equipment is significantly better than anything TP-Link to the point that I have a few in the datacentre ;)

          • @Clear: You don't need to convince me. HP Procurve and Ubitquiti in use here.

            • @alvian: Good man! Predominantly Cisco in my case :)

            • @alvian: This is TP-Link SOHO equipment, and priced accordingly.

Comparing this to Ubiquity in like comparing linksys (ex Cisco).
The higher end TP-Link stuff is the equal of ubiquity, but less marketing in AU.

    • +1

Amazon consolidated TP-Link's TL-SG10xy range of switches into one product listing, where x = number of ports (5/8/16/24/48), and y = advanced features such as PoE & basic management. Complaints of VLAN issues are for the managed switches but are not applicable to this unmanaged TL-SG105 switch (besides the problem I mentioned about the undefined behaviour of unmanaged switches toward VLAN tagged frames).

  • +1

    Come on Amazon ….

    • Amazon is never coming to the party. Unfortunately it's not like America, they cannot sell below cost to wipe out the competition.

Jeff also has to give out a few billion for his divorce lol.

      • Isn't that more of an issue of predatory pricing when they are a dominant force? Right they are hardly that, if anything they are probably too small to be able to support an overtly aggressive strategy. But yeah i get the jist.

  • is there 5 port Modem router?

    • is there 5 port Modem router?

      Read the title.

      Desktop switch.

  • Got one from the Auburn store - can confirm they still have stock. I have no use for it currently but I thought getting one wouldn't hurt

    • if you are serious about networking , you should consider using a dedicated switch (for L2 switching) and an enterprise grade router (like Ubiquiti USG that just focuses on L3 switching). Most consumer grade router has limit when dealing with highspeed switching.

  • Can we get an expired up in here? Due to the deal being expired?

    • Yes, anyone still after a 5 port Gb switch should look at the Linksys SE2500, $15 at Umart.

    • From where do you see the deal being expired? It runs until the end of today and there are stock available in selected MSY branches.

      • Fair, wasn't thinking brick stores, I'll see myself out o.O

  • Price matched at JB MSY. Cheers.

    (comment edited)

    • Did they need to see that the item is in stock at MSY? My local has sold out :(

Edit: can't seem to find this at the JB Website either.. hmm

  • I called Mitcham, they said they were out but we're happy to order 2 in for me.

  • Got 2 of these priced matched at OW South Vermont VIC against MSY Mitcham VIC for $13.30 each earlier on in the afternoon at about 2pm. Mitcham still had stock when OW checked! lucky I got in in time.
