"Unlock Referrals by using up more", to be one who refer's, how much use before you can refer?

    • would also like to know this

      • Me 3

    • Same… Kind of vague, someone posted that they used it about six times in a week, maybe make dummy transfers?

    • +1

They just replied to my message. They said you need to make a purchase, typically within 24 hours the restriction will be removed

  • Are your deposits guaranteed by government if this company goes belly up?

    • Yep, usual government guarantees apply. Subsidiary of Bendigo Bank

"Deposits provided through the Up apps are protected by the Financial Claims Scheme, up to $250,000 per person (in aggregate across all deposit products held with Bendigo and Adelaide Bank)."

Aren't all bank deposits guaranteed? Genuinely curious.

    • "All Up branded banking and financial products available in the Up apps are issued by Bendigo and Adelaide Bank, the most trusted bank in Australia. Deposits provided through the Up apps are protected by the Financial Claims Scheme (FCS), up to $250,000 per person (in aggregate across all deposit products held with Bendigo and Adelaide Bank). Up also uses the latest security technology, including smartphone biometrics and advanced cryptography, to protect your money."

I love these startups that come out and say they're changing the world etc.

This is essentially an online only bank that uses a traditional bank as it's infrastructure (this one is owned by Bendigo bank) and they put nice funky colours on a website to trick millennials into thinking this is innovative.

Anyway, free $10 is free money I get it. But another day, another startup burning VC money to acquire customers. (recent examples, Spaceship, Mealpal)

    • whats wrong with spaceship?

      • +2

        Their fees.

        • -1

the 0 fees when balance is under 5000…

If you have over 5000 that means you prob already know how to invest in stocks and aren't the target market for an managed fund.

          • +1

@EightSix: Aren't all supers managed funds? I probably have a balance of more than $5k in my super and my industry super fund is pretty much a managed fund. I don't invest in stocks. Am I alone?

            • @virhlpool: oh you talking about super and not their app.

Their fees are comparable to other super funds.

              • @EightSix: Well.. what do you mean by App? Spaceship is a super fund. Isn't it? App or website is just the way you manage it. OP is also referring to their 'super' product I reckon. They were absurdly expensive in the past. I am not sure of their current fees. I couldn't find their performance comparison with AusSuper etc by any neutral website.

      • +1

They screwed up with the Super product by having ridiculous fees, so they launched a 'free' Universe product.

I don't know how sustainable that business is given their funky office in Sydney CBD and little revenue they are generating. They have the Atlassian guys backing them, but I just don't see them doing too well as a business.

      • I love spaceships

    • +1

MealPal will wrap up sooner if it continues burning money like this, me thinks.

I didn't know Up is owned by Bendigo bank. How is it a different bank then?

      • a subsidiary of Bendigo and Adelaide Bank Limited. Bendigo and Adelaide Bank Limited is the issuer of all Up branded banking and financial products.

Its the same as when Wespac has a subsidary BankSA

        • I would rather prefer an independent 'online only' bank like ING and not any with association with 'traditional' banks. At least that way their operational cost is low and % of high cost of the parent arm won't be passed further down, directly or indirectly.

          • +1

@virhlpool: Bendigo and Adelaide Bank are very different to the Big 4 Banks.

you can tell this by the amount of capital under than management.

ING are owned by a larger banks than our Big 4s. -> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ING_Group

            • @EightSix: To be honest, if these 'online only' banks keep their costs and profits totally separate from that of their 'brick and mortar' parents, it's all good as that's the reason people choose them - higher interest rate and better 'online only' service.

          • @virhlpool: Why not try credit unions? ING was fined for money laundering.

            • @freemoneyhunter: Sure, if they give 2.8% interest and waive global ATM and foreign transactions fees.

      • I believe so as well, most of the restaurants despise them and they keep handing out $50 Coles vouchers for signing up.

  • the sender needs to use the Up app, running at least version 1.2.2.

Yet the latest Google Play version available is 1.2.1

Has any android user successfully received $10 after sending an invite?

    • +1

      sure have.

  • +2

For new users, I contacted their live chat:
Doesn’t look like there is a set time frame for the referral feature to become unlocked. They said it activates 24 hours after your “activating transaction” after they see you are an “active upsider”.

Mine just got activated and I was given 20 invites, signed up Sunday and have done around 5 transactions and a few transfers.

    • +1

Use the promo code PATCH and it will be instant

      • Where do you enter that?

        • +1

When signing up on the app, it asks if you have a code to enter

  • -5

Can somebody else do this for me? I'll give you five bucks.

    • -1

You need your full legal name and address to sign up + use your mobile number

        • -3

Haha, wow you guys are really not in the mood today.

  • finance question: if they went bankrupt, my savings/account money is safe by any insurance/safe fund? what is the limit?

  • Thanks OP free lunch today!

  • So if I sign up I will get $10 right away and can then payid the money out and close the account?

    • +1

Yep but it's worth having as a spare account for whatever. I use it for gumtree sales so I don't give out my other bank info

  • -1

    What's "up"?

    Not much, how about you?

  • -2

I love the look of the app, seems like it has some great features and improving the antiquated BS that is banking apps is something I can get behind. Unfortunately my identity cannot be verified for some reason, I emailed their support and basically got back "You're shit out of luck".

    Signed up with ING instead.

I’ve moved 90% of my personal banking to Up, the way merchants are displayed is amazing- helps me realise when I’m spending to much on something as it’s all categorised and uses logos so I can see a pattern of Macca’s etc

I love how savings is hidden- I’m useless at saving but the fact it’s hidden, I forget it’s there and how much money it contains. The rounding up of every transaction makes saving a breeze.

The card is sexy (no brainer)

Apple Pay and heavy utilisation of Osko

The incredibly simple and intuitive user interface makes the app simple to use

    The simple support interface

The fact I don’t have to unlock the app and wait for it to load everytime- my iPhone is secure enough- there’s no point having the same authentication (Face ID) to see the balance and do internal transfers- only prompts when a task is performed at risk (i.e external transfers etc)

I like that I get a notification for every transaction on the account with an update of balance reminding me I’m spending too much because I can actively see my balance draining

Up has set the bar very high, and shown banks they need to get with the technology on offer

I can’t believe how many people are with banks that aren’t even on the NPP

    100% in favour of Up

  • +1

Feels suspicious to me, giving a random stranger your phone number…

    • +2

Totally understand if you don't want to give some random on the Internet your mobile number you could use this.

  • Meh

  • What must one do to unlock referrals?

    • Use the product…

    • click the link that gets sms'd to you and install the app agree to the terms and conditions of signing up for a bank account and away you go.

      • As in it won't let me refer my friends yet, apparently I need to "use it more".

I don't have my card yet so I can't do much more than transfer money around.

        • You add the card from the Up tab to google pay or Apple pay to start using it

          • @EightSix: Actually this feature is only available for Apple Pay, Google Pay is on the road map to be rolled out soon but it's not available you have to wait for your physical card before you can add it to Google Pay.

    • Doesn’t look like there is a set time frame for the referral feature to become unlocked. They said it activates 24 hours after your “activating transaction” after they see you are an “active upsider”.

Mine just got activated and I was given 20 invites, signed up Sunday and have done around 5 transactions and a few transfers.

      • So I asked support, and they said roughly within 24 hours of your first purchase transaction if you are an active user on the latest version of the app.

        • +1

Which is somewhat what it says on the website.

  • Can anyone confirm that middle name is printed on the envelope containing the card they send you?

    • +1

Middle name was not printed on the card. Only the initial is displayed. This is in my case. Might depend on the length of your name.

  • Has anyone been able to use this as an added bank account on papal transaction? (actually successfully direct debit money out)

  • +6

Just found this mentioned on Whirlpool. Interesting to see what is in the plans to add.

    https://up.com.au/roadmap/index.html

  • Anyone had issues when signing up? I've put in all required documents - drivers license, Medicare and passport but still asking for more details. Have emailed them, fingers crossed.

    • I put in medicare first then driver's license and it simply would not work. I started again, just putting in driver's licence and it worked perfectly.

    • So, after 14 days UP has emailed back with no explanation but just asked for my first, middle and last name. :/

I guess another 14 days worth of wait to see what the resolution is. Not quite convinced based on the kind of service I'm receiving.

  • +1

Loving Up so far, super easy to use and the spending insights are excellent. Can't wait to see how they go implementating the new features. Thanks for the heads up about this bank OP!

Can't believe I used to use Westpac for most of my personal banking, smaller banks are always better. ING is also similar to this, but I think I just prefer Up due to the simple interface.

  • Isn't this the wrong way around?

"Referrers will need to give referees their mobile number."

In order to refer someone, I need to enter their mobile number – not the other way around, right?

  • When does ref link become available been waiting a while, plus adding moolah.

  • -1

    https://www.bendigobank.com.au/farefree
is up card qualify for this?

    • Nope, whilst the core banking is provided by Bendigo it is not a Bendigo bank product.

  • Sorry I maybe a Noob. But how do I get listed in the random referral link? - Wait I figured it out.

    • Hi do you have to give out your full name? or just first name and mobile

      • I did just first name and mobile.

        • +1

There is no real reason for you to give the person referring you your real name if you don't want to they could just put your OzBargain username there in stead.

  • FREE $10 is good! Are there any other apps like this?

    • It's a whole new category that likes to refer to themselves as Neobanks Kyle-K keeps a spreadsheet that he makes available here

  • Current round of referrals are ending soon.

    Message from the app:

The current season of Hook Up a Mate will be ending at 11:59pm AEST on Tuesday 11 of June 2019.

After this time no more invites can be sent out, however any invites sent out before this time will be honoured.

We are absolutely blown away with the amount of support we have received. Thank you to everyone who hooked up their mates and made a bit of cash along the way. We are looking forward to kicking off another season of Hook Up a Mate (hopefully later this year). Keep your eyes peeled.

    Thanks!

  • Mate told me about this today so used his Ref code, easy $10.. confirmed was legit by checking on here & made the process easier.
    Thanks OP!

  • +1

For anyone reading this deal - Although the referral codes have expired, I signed up with promo code "PATCH" today and still was able to receive $10 in my account immediately.
