Staples AU Online Free $20 Voucher [Issue Resolved]

43610
GAME20

MOD: Please note that users here have reported:
- system issues
- accounts no longer accessible
- user information may be exposed
- being told that, something went wrong with the database yesterday, a lot of information was lost, Staples are working to recover the information, meanwhile new customers are being assigned id numbers that actually belong to customers created just before the big crash and then the new id numbers are hooked up to the old history -> new customers can see other people's data

update:
- some people are now reporting that they can get back into their accounts though they can see other people's accounts
- some people are also reporting that they've received their orders now

update 20 May 2011:
- people are reporting items received
- people can use the code, though it may be better to play 1 round of the game (you don't have to win) and have them email confirmation of the eligibility to you

Link now changed to the link to the game

        • Valid point, but there are still technical reasons for how they could have done this. eg. maybe they are linking to a totally new database, which is why it doesn't recognise logins and allows people to re-sign up.

Think about the logic of it as well. They allowed it to go on all day and didn't cease to offer the vouchers. They are also a very large company and it is very unlikely they would do this on purpose and as other's have said, intentionally push the boundaries of what is legal in Australia.

Not to mention the major flaw in your theory on credit card details and the fact they would not be able to refund people if they deleted DB entries and this WOULD be a major, major problem for them.

        • what theory on credit card details? I haven't mentioned them at all!

Furthermore why link to a new database table? If their database is fine this would just create more work for them for what gain? none.

          Double checkmate.

        • +1

I said it was your theory because you ignored my question on credit card details, which you have just done again.

    • +1

      .

  • +1

    Ozbargained LOL.

  • Hmm they have deleted my account too. I want my $6.35 back then.

    • wow!

      totally Ozbargain'd!

  • i think because they saw the above post about changing name of account and kept using the code over and over again

    • +1

They could check if multiple accounts were logged in from the same IP.

  • -3

We should probably call up the police lol. When the website was down, they were backing up our CC details, address and whatnot to share to 3rd parties for marketing. Don't tell me they have a fake ABN number.

    • You don't need to take a website offline to backup.

  • LOL I missed out but yeah totally Ozbargained!

  • no shipment to other country - i live in western australia……….oops! WA is still in Australia

  • i only ordered the hdd…my account appears to be deleted too :(
got the receipt and everything thou… i want my hdd

  • They deleted my account too :(

  • +4

One massive advertising scam to gain exposure to their site?

I think it is very dodgy if they start deleting accounts and cancelling orders! Once confirmed I think we need to start negging this down, geez its the top deal at the moment!

    • Agree, total rip.

  • Theres gonna be an uprising if they've cancelled all our hdd orders.

  • +5

Confirm account deleted, even though I did not order the HDD and only ordered the paper and other full price stuff.

    • +2

I ordered milo and tea. Frankly I can understand them removing the tea from my order but deleting my account, seriously?

  • +1

especially since they obviously have stock… on the website again…

  • +7

One big waste of time, account deleted

    • +4

damn right, what a massive waste of time. I hope they are reading this. Only thing people are going to remember about staples.com.au is the dodgy voucher deal and massive waste of time.

  • I don't see how they have ground to delete/refuse order though? It was all legit, even if you just bought the HDD. Only problem I can think of is those people combining two voucher codes, but the argument can be made that their system allowed it.

    • +4

Order reject or not. Deleting my account is just rude!

  • +1

I made an account yesterday and got the HDD at $49.99 + paper $10 off deal. My account is still active.

    • I did that too, Got my stuff today :)

  • what a horrible ending they have made for themselves by deleting accounts and everything, even with people that paid part cash.

Great find OP, but shabby practices and they've had enough free publicity = voting down

    • +3

It might be some ozbargainers were exploiting the system and creating multiple accounts. Hence why they have shut it down.

      • yeah multiple accounts wouldn't help the situation,
didn't get a chance to make an order myself for the record.

      • They have the ability to check what IP we used, they should have checked what accounts used the same IP address.

      • Expected plenty of 1TB HHDs listed in ebay SOON!!!

  • account deleted

    • +1

Don't know if deleted by certainly unable to log in. I purchased the hdd.

  • +2

I was under the impression that if they take the money from my CC, they should honour the sale. Correct?

  • +1

Wow, these are some serious accusations against the company.
So far, my $7 coffee order is still valid and my accounting is still standing, so let's hope.
I never abused these offers so I hope they understand this. Was a bit nervous about reading these comments because I'm still waiting on a hard drive from them I bought last week.

As quickly as they are building up company exposure and sales with these crazy deals, they can loose it all if they start to be dodgy and not honoring orders, etc.

  • +2

Account has also been deleted. That, or they've disabled my account.
Was looking forward to my 1tb HDD too =.

I expect a full refund on my credit card and an apology if they're just going to go around deleting accounts/orders with no notification. Especially as I got an order confirmation email.

    • -1

Yes, we should hold hands and take a nice stroll sassypants.

  • +1

    Epic..
bought HP ink.. 25% disc with A$20 disc with Free delivery
    +1

  • +1

My account has been deleted too. I only ordered the hard drive, and I even played their game to get the coupon to my e-mail.

  • Mine is still valid…

  • It's a shame that people place their personal details in when signing up for an account, then place an order, only to find out that their account and order get deleted! I didn't order anything, but I'd be upset too if I was in the same boat as others on here! Why have deals/vouchers in the first place when you don't honour them or cancel peoples' orders? Not a good look.

  • +3

    consumer affairs time!!!!!!!!!!

  • You can't play the game anymore….!!!

  • I warned you guys about poking the beast, lol. But on a serious side, it's a terrible move by them to delete all accounts.

    • AGREED!

I'd expect anyone who actually registered and played the game online to have their orders honoured though. I have an existing account and also got the $20 voucher after registering for the promotion, which I am yet to use! Obviously it won't work now……

Staples obviously did not anticipate the OzBargain effect. They've been good to me thus far and I don't expect that to change in genuine/reasonable cases.

  • I ordered the hdd + paper + other nitty grittys to get my order around $60 but it was also deleted. I wasted so much time deciding what else to order as well..

If they had issues over me using both coupons then I would have atleast expected an email asking if I would like to remove the A4 paper coupon and continue with my purchase.

  • Hmmm I order paper with discount and paid etc has even taken out of my cc account. Now my login account with staples has disappeared? WTF? They even sent a confirmation of my order however have yet to receive an email re. delivery.

    • mine is stil valid

  • +1

If you have a complaint here's their email :

    [email protected]

Complain away! My account and order got deleted too.

    • +1

I hate email, they will just hit delete.

1800 STAPLES tomorrow to ask them about it. Then consumer affairs if they refuse to send me my milo and tea.

      • Should go to current affairs…
        reported to ninemsn…

    • Currently, this is what your complaint is going to look like: "Hi, I was unable to login to your website for half an hour. I am guessing my account has been deleted. Plz halp".

      • +2

Mine is deleted for sure, because I can register with same email again.

        • +2

Well according to watwatwat that just means they are having database issues and your account exists somewhere it's just misplaced right now.

      • -1

watwatwat - Accounts being deleted, is it that hard to believe? Get over it.

  • +2

Lol… my account got deleted too. And a pair of earphones I had my eye on went up in price by about $2 an hour ago.

From their Welcoming Email they sent me: "we have no sneaky administration"

    Oh, the irony.

    • The canon ink I had my eye one too went up about $2 too, I dont think those two items are the only things that increased in price. Dodgy!

STAPLES have done ILLEGAL "Bait Advertisting"

This is ILLEGAL under Australia Competition Legislation, enforced by the ACCC and NSW Department of Fair Trading.

However, they need people to complain to them, in writing, to take action, including FINES of $660 per order to Staples, per order they cancelled ILLEGALLY.

You need to write BY POSTAL MAIL ONLY & say "Please Fine Staples Pty Ltd for bait advertising in Australia. This US company cannot act like this in Australia and get away with it!":

    Mr. Graeme Samuel,
    ACCC Commissioner,
    GPO Box# 3131
    CANBERRA ACT 2601

    and

    Mr Don Jones,
Deputy Commissioner - Compliance & Enforcement,
    NSW Department of Fair Trading,
    REPLY PAID# 972,
    PARRAMATTA, NSW, 2124

Do not email or ring; this will be ignored & no action will be taken. They need a signature with all letters, to take action.

    • How retarded are you, found out today that orders and accounts weren't deleted, db issue fixed now. EPIC FAIL! lol you are way too seriously involved in bloodsucking antics, welcome to real life - for your first experience in life with a real problem.

  • +1

Tried to use the Game20 code and it says Error: you've already used this coupon. I just sign up and haven't order anything. Any idea?

    • +1

They probably don't want to honour the code anymore.

      • True. Same thing happened to me. I looked up my order history & I had supposedly ordered the HDD! - Whilst I had been in the process of placing an order, it was for tea!, I never got as far as giving them my credit card number.

  • I saw this post earlier today and just knew it was gonna turn ugly so I didn't bother ordering anything even though it was tempting. But the lack of PayPal was the kicker and the fact that the site didn't seem secure.

But seriously, a company is not going to send hundreds of people $20 worth of coffee or milo or whatever for just the postage. It was never going to happen.

    • Why not? It was a legit $20 off offer…

    • +3

It's illegal not to send things as ordered.

      It is legally binding contract.

People need to complain to ACCC & NSW Fair Trading.

      • sucking too much Jesus joice today?

    • I get all that. But it was obvious right from the start that it was going to be open to abuse and multiple ordering and that it was simply not going to be tenable for this company to fill the orders. I will never get why intelligent people seem to think they can order free stuff en masse and then expect that it will actually be fufilled. You should order with the slim hope that it might but probably won't.

      • What reason do they have for not sending out an email which says: Unfortunately your order has been withdrawn, you will be immediately issued a refund.

      • Yep, that was why I hesitated as well. Added it to my cart and realised it's probably silly to think they will be fulfilling all these orders. Glad I closed the page.

  • +2

Yep, my account got deleted as well. I've just ordered 5 reams of Reflex papers and I'm going to give them the benefit of doubts or else hello Fair Trading.

Bad publicity straight up for these guys. Oh and they better release the funds from my card too.

    • They don't issue refunds at all ever.

Just credits on your Staples account.

      • +1

Every time you purchase, lease or hire a good or service, anywhere around Australia, you are automatically given certain rights. These rights are known as consumer guarantees.

When you have a problem and one of the guarantees has not been met, you are entitled to a remedy. The type of remedy depends on the circumstances but may include a repair, replacement, refund or having a service performed again.

        http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/3863

No refund means I'll go to ACCC.

      • +3

None of us exist in the world of Staples though, so how would the credits work?

        • +2

They credit it to the user with the ID of 0 (Which would be the site creator).

        • +1

We probably still exist in some sort of database, well the marketing one of course. Cheap and nasty way to harvest a whole bunch of details.

However, since a large majority of us have been burnt this time round so I doubt it any of their spam e-mail/snail mail will have much effect if at all.

      • +1

That's ok, I'll leave it with Amex to sort it out.

      • how can they do that when they DELETED accounts?

      • Again I know from asking before they don't have accounts in place - CC gets refunded straight away too, i know it is a mentally challenging day for you but just try to keep it together.

  • Welcome back, Rachel McQueenie. Haha I'm logged into someone elses account?

Now I can't sign in to my account. Interesting! I did get an email stating "Your order has been despatched and should be with you soon" though.

    • That means it's gone through. I guess you're one of the lucky ones.

      • -1

Welcome back, Rachel McQueenie. Haha I'm logged into someone elses account?

        i doubt it

    • I got the email too, and am also not able to log on to my account

  • did anyone read the terms on the box 10 voucher code - it said not valid with any other offer

perhaps thats wahy orders have been cancelled

    • They had terms on it? It was added to my cart automatically even though I didn't even order paper. >.<

  • "Waste of time."
If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

  • just read terms and conditions there is a valid contract (section 5) since there is no pricing error(section 8)

  • +7

REMEMBER: "At Staples, we're focused on getting the little things right"

    • +2

      Oh how the irony.

  • +1

My account got burned to smithereens too. :(

  • +6

Since these guys are Yanks, it's time to call for a class action to go sort them out. LOL.

  • +9

"No account number to forget: Getting a new supplier shouldn't have to mean remembering a new account number or username. At Staples, it doesn't - you can login simply by using your email address and the password that you chose."

Unless we destroy your account instead and convert your postage fees to staple credits! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

  • how does the $20 voucher work? i tried buying total 6 lipton tea bags over $20 and i dont get to use the code?!

    • +1

      It's finished, read a little ^

    • +3

They've reneged on the deal and are very messily burning the evidence by blasting people's accounts.

Don't waste any more time trying to buy from them.

  • I am also one of them who signed up but was unable to use the voucher

    Error Message:
OOPS! We can't find that offer code. Please try re-entering it or, if pain persists, please call us on 1800-STAPLES.Quote: Offer code 'GAME20' not found.

  • +1

Lulz at all the people with their accounts deleted, I, the smart guy didn't try to ozbargain this when they have your FULL details!
I do feel for Hintswen though… if Staples doesn't deliver the milo and coffee.. they deserve to be SUED.

    • Big deal, your information is likely to be held in multitude of databases already. Things like Fly Buys or Woolworth's Everyday Rewards is even more intrusive.

      • Jeez dude, can't you even realise I'm not serious?
Take a breather bro, just cause your account got deleted.
Fly buys doesn't have my CC :)

    • +2

How will I sleep without my milo!

I should sue them for loss of sleep!
