Many conflicting responses from eBay customer service reps in the comments below. Some have successfully gained $5 vouchers, others have been told it's a targeted promo. Hopefully eBay will adjust the T&Cs to clarify the status of this code.

The last 10$ off didn't work either.

    Time to neg.

    • Sounds like a ploy to get people to download the app just to try if it works.

  • Didn't work for me either.

  • +7

Man ozb true colours come out. Don’t even need it and they go like seagulls man

    • +1

When the seagulls follow the trawler, it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea.

      • Relax there Eric cantona.

  • +11

Made an offer on an item thinking I'd be getting the $5 off. The seller has accepted the offer and now I find out it's targeted. Pretty pissed to be honest.

    • You can add an item to your cart and then test the promo codes before committing to an actual purchase.

And this deal was flagged as targeted shortly after the code went live.

      • +1

        He made the offer previously.

        • Made an offer on an item thinking I'd be getting the $5 off.

    • +12

Sorry but I had to laugh lol

    • +4

Is paying an extra $5 going to be a deal breaker..?

      • Is paying an extra $5 going to be a deal breaker..?

        Not a deal-breaker, a pissed-maker!

    • +1

      Imagine being pissed over $5.

      • +4

It's actually more the principle rather than a dollar amount, Ronnie.

        • It's the belief, dignity and spirit of an ozbargainer.

  • Chat person said:

I also further check with the marketing team that this promotion is given to members who does not have any purchases made using the app for the past 12 months.

    • Have you made purchases in the last 12 months on the app and did they credit you?

      • No, I downloaded the app just to try the promotion but that was not good enough (see my below comment)

        • Same, garbage criteria.

    • Seems like a lie. I got it. And I make purchases, although not often. Maybe 3 times a year.

      • Maybe she was just making up excuses

  • CENSUS:

Did you just download the app today or have you had it for a while (and previously used it)? If you had the app for a while, when is the last time you used it to purchase anything? Did the code work for you?

From talking to a rep, it sounds like the conditions for the offer are: A) already had the app for a while and have used it, and B) not used it to purchase anything in the last 12 months

  • +5

Ebay chat just for a waste of time:

For the item in your cart, I really hate to say that there's no promotion code that we can use.

    Oh how sad
    Jules13:56 PM
It saddens me so much to have this situation. It would be best to always check our ebay home page regularly because it's where we advertise our promotions

This targeted code comes out once a year and it’s even the same code. Total waste of time because I remember it was posted here before.

    • +4

It saddens me so much to have this situation

It saddens me so much that there's hardly any other alternatives to eBay

      • +3

True.. but I am getting used to AliExpress.

        • The only thing that gets me is when aliexpress slap on the 10% gst at the end

          • @montorola: Make a new account everytime and get advantage of $5 coupon. Yes a bit pain but it pay off well.

  • To me it says, that it will only work on the app,
    Maybe thats the case?
Don't know if someone has mentioned it already.

edit - saw it being discussed just above after posting. Apologies.

      @ eBay via App
It's in the title of the deal.

      • +2

Yeah but it's right at the end of the title - you don't honestly expect OzB'ers to read all the way to end of the line, do you?

It's like "$5 off ev-" CLICK THROUGH

        • Painted quite a picture there.

          • +2

@demmogorgon: Words are my brush; the comments section my canvas.

  • +8

This one does not spark joy.

  • +6

Code does not work on EBay App.

Spoke to EBay and they say it’s targeted and is specified in the T&Cs. When I ask where? They said under “… eligible customers …“. So basically they can say whatever they wish!

    No more EBay.

  • Didn’t work on my usual account. Tried with my other account that is used a lot less and code was already applied.

  • +1

Thanks OP - worked for me after downloading app.

  • +1

    Thanks

  • +1

    Thank you

  • …should probably add android and ios only too to that description….

  • The code does not work for my accounts. Very Sad

    • No luck for me either.

  • No luck.

  • +1

Thanks OP!! I didn't know I was targeted. Logged on to my ebay app on my phone, entered code and viola $5 off and paid $0.88 cents. WIN!

  • Had to commit to buy before seeing the option to add code, only for me not to be able to use code.

  • +2

455 up-votes, and about a dozen people got the code to work…… I've given up trying to figure out how voting works on this site!

The winner of course is ebay. Thousands of extra visitors to their site have searched and added items to their cart, and many of those have probably downloaded the app for the first time, and it's cost them next to nothing.

    • Came here to upvote it specifically because of all the complainers, even though I wasn't targeted.

Honest mistake by the OP originally, marked targeted as soon as he found out and still people whinge.

  • None of my accounts got it, but last time they gave me $10 why not this time.

  • Yeah, doesn't work.

  • +1

Thanks, am finally targeted (first time)! Wouldn't have known if it wasn't for the post, as I didn't receive any email about it. So thanks tightarse!
Note I've had the ebay app installed for a while but until now haven't used it to actually buy anything…

  • When I spoke to chat about this code they told me it would work for my account within 24 hours…

  • +1

    Works for me.

  • +2

Perfect! Needed a new laptop sleeve.

  • +1

why is TA getting so many neggs? 💔💔 This deal is awesome!

  • +1

Not valid for me. But I must comment to say thank you tightarse for posting and being such a big contributory member to the OzB community. It is greatly appreciated.

  • This must be the first 'targeted' deal I have ever gotten from ebay… yay

  • Doesn’t work.

  • Targeted offer, I am not a chosen one :(

  • -5

Thanks TA, an upvote for me even though I’m not targeted as always.

This community (a small part of) should start to appreciate what this man has done for us, instead of using negative votes for an innocent mistake.

    • +8

People have voted negative towards the deal not the poster. The entire credibility of this sites goes downhill if we start voting the poster and not the deal, both positive and negative votes.

      • +1

While I agree that this deal is not great for some that's not targeted, it doesn't warrant using negative votes to voice your disappointment. If the concern is deal being not advertised initially (not targeted), then maybe more appropriate to not vote.

A lot of the negative voters are doing so because they are not targeted.

  • Whhy 66 negs? It’s clearly targeted people need to a grip, it’s just as sad as those who miss out on a deal and giving it a beg, because it doesn’t work doesn’t warrant a neg,, mods need to remove these negs. GW TA regardless haters are just gonna hate.

    • +4

When I saw this deal this morning it never mentioned it was targeted. So I am guessing those who have voted negative have done so because of that.

      • +1

Even if it wasn’t mentioned targeted should know by now there’s a chance of it being targeted how long have most people been on ozbaragin? disappointing yes? Worth any neg no, doesn’t work move along.

      • It got flagged as 'Targeted' shortly after going live. Most of the downvotes came after that, well after, and many of the accompanying comments even reference that they're unhappy for not being targeted. It's just bitterness over a $5 discount - silly, really.

  • -4

Code doesn't work for me. Waste of time :/

    • +1

Why the neg? It says targeted.

      • -6

Because I've not used eBay in some time and should be targeted for the promotion.

        • +1

          Entitled much?

          • -1

@TheBooleanOne: Well, considering I fit the criteria, yes.

For vouchers which are accessible, fair and provide value I give a positive vote. Conversely, if something isn't accessible to me despite fitting the criteria, is a bait and switch, wastes time or is completely random/chance based, I vote down.

            • +1

@Kranbone: Nowhere in the T&Cs does it say who fits the criteria, so it's just what some other eBay support reps said to people who asked the question (it seems most of them don't know either). It's clearly 'targeted' in the title, so I don't know what you're whining about. I stand by my entitled comment.

Oh, let me just go and look up the voting guidelines and peruse the "appropriate use of negative vote" section to see whether your reasoning qualifies as a negative. Hint: it doesn't

              https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:voting_guidelines

              • -1

@TheBooleanOne: My use of a negative vote is fair. If I cannot access the deal yet others can, it effectively excludes me from that deal.

I'd have voted positive if the deal was open to me. Pretty simple.

  • +1

    Didn't work :(

  • +2

Works for me! Not sure how it’s targeted because I shop on eBay every couple of months (recent purchase 2 weeks ago). The coupon code appeared in the CHECKOUT coupon section where you can actually select it (no need to type code). I guess this is how it’s targetted, like added to your account already. Oh and I used my iPad eBay app to buy something over $30.

    • +1

Just got an email from eBay advertising the coupon code 'APP5OFF' when using the app. Can't use it more than once either

    • -1

Yeah, I had a friend who's made numerous purchases with eBay over the last few weeks and he received it too. Perhaps this was purely random with no criteria.

I suppose I'll continue using amazon and aliexpress as it works out cheaper for me at the moment.

  • ok… was trying to get codes to work. Had an item in cart and no luck at checkout with code. Put my phone on standby and when I came back… the item was purchased! No clicking confirm purchase or anything like that. Possible app error on the checkout script?

    • -2

      Just tell seller to cancel

      • -1

Just tell politely ask seller to cancel

        Fixed it for you.

  • +1

    Did not target me. Kanker.

  • -7

    Targeted

    • Yep, like it says in the title. Or did you miss that?

  • +1

    Worked for me, thank you!

I have used the ebay app a couple of times already this year, and had the code in my account ready to apply.

  • +1

A lot of people have voted negative because they can't receive the deal which seems fair.

Imagine if a vendor offered half price on a TV, but picked and choose who could receive the half price. This is no different in principle

    • +5

Your example doesn't correlate. eBay didn't advertise the promo here, and in theory only people who qualify for the deal would be aware of it.

Imagine if a vendor offered half price on a TV to specific customers on their mailing list who fit a particular criteria, and then thousands of others come asking for the same deal despite never receiving the same mail-out - that's a bit closer to what's going on here.

If a vendor wants to target a specific demographic, so be it - not every deal is suitable for everyone. OzB is great because some who qualified but might not otherwise have been aware have found out about it and been able to take advantage of the $5 discount.

    • -1

Spot on!!! Picking and choosing who have access to the deal, of course people will be disappointed and annoyed

  • +2

Neg votes are good in that it'll show ebay how crap their offers are and to lift their game

no doubt they have people in marketing/PR reviewing all the comments on OZB

    • +7

67 downvotes but over 5000 clickthroughs - I don't think eBay marketing are gonna give a shit about OzB comments.

  • -7

it's targeted, not working for me

    • +5

I feel like a broken record. Targeted means not everyone gets it and it's clearly in the title.

Also let me check the voting guidelines. Nope, nothing in there about targeted deals being a reason for a neg vote.

      • Maybe you work for ebay customer service ;)

Aside from downvoting my posts are you able to advise the criteria they use to determine who is targeted and who is not or is it just completely random?

        • +3

No I don't work for eBay, thank you. Still in the tech industry though.

Why I'm so vocal about this is because people come and make a big effort to find and post bargains for the benefit of this community, then to be downvoted for petty things like it being targeted.

I have no idea how they target users, but creating multiple eBay accounts and spread your purchases across them would increase your chances.

          • @TheBooleanOne: I thought you were only allowed 1 eBay account?? I understand your point, but understand from my end for a vendor to advertise targeted deals and always miss out is very disappointed and extremely frustrating.

We should encourage the vendors to provide deals to all. Or at least provide some explanation on what the criteria is for the promo. These ones seem random and that's just adds to the frustration

            • @Kranbone: Let's get something straight here. The OP is not a vendor, he's just a user like you and me that is posting it for everyone else without financial reward. He doesn't control who eBay targets as a deal, or what the criteria is.

Negging deals that are valid doesn't really encourage people to post, even if Tightarse might be used to it now days - not everyone is. I guess that's the reason they have voting guidelines so everyone is on the same page.

You can find eBay's multiple account policy via Google search, and it says you can have multiple accounts as long as you're not using them to bypass limits. So this looks like it's perfectly acceptable practice to have >1 accounts to me.

              • @TheBooleanOne: I never said the OP was a vendor. What I'm saying is the vendor has put a deal which can't be used by everyone and there's no description of what criteria is used to select who's targeted. As such, it appears to be random.

I stand by my words and vote. I might sign up for multiple accounts to game their system so I can make use of these promos in future.

  • Bit annoyed was about to grab something today I seen yesterday was showing full price online but 149 off on eBay but obviously maybe slow to update, there was a further 7% I could use and I go out my way to grab a few egift cards for eBay I then find item went up,I can get same item for original price from other retailer but not 7% in fact no promo work. I wished I had left gift cards out and just gone ahead earlier. Now I resume to get other as not saving the extra 7% I just hate when that happens price go up just before you buy.

    • I think you're in the wrong thread.

  • +2

Ta TA! Been looking for a dash cam mount as the WAZA B3 mount (bought thru OzB) broke due to the thousand times the suction mount fell off. Got one for 49c after code.

  • +1

Just realized I’ve been targeted . Code was in an email banner in a generic email
