12 Months Free 1Password Family (Password Manager) ($4.99 USD Per Month Thereafter)

2421
CANVA2019

Last month Canva was breached. As part of their response, Canva partnered with 1Password to offer 12 months of the family plan for free. New 1Password customers only.

Credit to @carlucch for the updated link after 1Password and Canva added extra hoops for users to jump through.

      • They have a paid version and enterprise which should able to sustain him to keep developing and server cost for free users.

It doesn't take up much space for a normal consumer individual account.

      • The same way that LastPass is free.

      • +1

Other than dev costs the only other cost is hosting. User data for this kind of stuff is tiny in the grand scheme of things and their backend is hosted on MS Azure. The running costs for that kind of thing are minuscule really and paid up well in advance. The 'system administration' is obviously all covered by MS as they're hosting it all.

This 'but how so cheap' has been raised quite a few times and Kyle has always been open about the funding etc. The paying users are enough to make this cost-effective and it isn't seen to change any time soon.

1Password has an immaculate track record though. It is also trusted and used by enterprise customers like Apple and Dropbox.

I have used it for many years and it is one of my favourite apps. I gladly pay for it.

How your data is stored (Teams and Family use the same design)

      https://1password.com/files/1Password%20for%20Teams%20White%…

      Vault is open source

    • I've been using Bitwarden for the last month (I switched from Lastpass) and it's honestly been great

  • +4

I can't recommend this higher. Also from a company with a very good track record and amazing mobile apps/browser extensions. Also it's completely encrypted on their end - they can't access your data. Any decryption only occurs on your device.

I just signed up but was not asked to enter the CANVA2019 code at all. Did I miss something?

    • +2

It was embedded in the URL. I included it in case others were searching for a 1Password coupon.

    • +1

      Check your billing account
It should say currently in trial, you have 366 days remaining in your free trial.

  • Having used this for a few years, I recently moved back to Lastpass (wife uses it) and have to say the LP functionality is significantly better.

    • My only issue with LP is that it keeps logging you out.

      • +1

You can change the logout time in options

  • Thx Op, didn't enter any cc details so I assume nothing will be charged even if i forget after 1 yr..

  • Seems like a good deal. use RememBear which I love so will stick with that for now.

  • What if you want to leave after the free period? How do you get all your passwords?🤪

    • +2

1Password allow you export all of your password to a file.

      • +4

And the 1Password export file is actually functional, unlike LastPass which exports a broken, mangled file that doesn't export all of your data and needs to be repaired by hand before using it elsewhere.

  • Anyone wondering:
After signing up, it should say currently in trial, you have 366 days remaining in your free trial.

  • What's the use of it?

  • +1

Why use it if you know you cant continue after a year unless you decided by now to pay afterward.

If you decide not to continue paying, what is your plan after all your records save in the app. Either you save in flat file or pay the fee

Another option is passwordsafe, its free.

    • you should be able to export to csv or something

    • Free means they not making money so security of the product will be less then a subscription based one

      • It is paid. Canva is picking up the tab for the first year for everyone who signs up with this coupon. I suspect they're getting a discounted rate.

        • I mean the passwordsafe

          • @asa79: Oh sorry. I thought you meant 1Password.

      • There's no reason that the security of the product must correlate with how much the product cost.

  • +3

    KeePass + Dropbox = ozbargain

  • +2

Recently moved away from 1password because of Dropbox changes to syncing 3 devices only on the free model, and didn’t like the 1password subscription model. Using Bitwarden now.

Also killed and removed my last pass accounts after hearing about their breach.

    • I am undecided about moving to Bitwarden but it does seem promising… I'm in the same boat as you but ended up just getting the Dropbox Plus trial for a month to add more devices.

      • I've been with Bitwarden for about a month now and it's working great. I would totally recommend it, as it's free, and even if you pay for the 'premium' plan, it only cost 10 USD per year

  • What you reckon Ipod the device all the big crooks get caught with :)

    Every1 I think knows the reason .

  • +2

I still run the old 1password that just stores an encrypted file in dropbox, and that still works great and no on going costs

  • +1

    Bitwarden. Free and fantastic.

  • Brilliant timing. Just emailed them yesterday if there was an upgrade for 1Password 6 to this.

  • Anyone tried Sticky Password?

    • +4

Is that like post-its on your monitor?

  • +1

I already use the free IOS app. If I sign up to this family account, can I merge the 2 accounts together into 1? Or will I lose my existing vault on my free IOS app when I sign into the family account on my app?

    • +1

It will migrate your standalone vault into the family account.

  • +2

Folks who don't have a password manager should take advantage of this trial.

Use 1Password and LastPass, they're cheap or free and quite often good enough. If their limitations grate on you, then pay extra for Dashlane. Most password lockers make it easy to migrate between services.

  • +2

I have been using 1 password for many years. Back when you could only use Dropbox for synchronising. 💯 recommended.

  • An idea when this offer expires? I know it is free for 12 months but when is the latest I can sign up?

  • I personally use KeePass. It has it's downsides (no cloud support) but also several upsides. But regardless, using a password manager is great practice. It does introduce a single point of failure, but having that point is worth being able to use unique, randomised passwords on all websites. To create a strong password I have read the following advice:
    1. Pick four words, ensuring that none of them are related. Even better if one is a proper noun e.g. portal banana streets tongariro.
    2. Combine and replace one or two of the letters with a symbol or number, preferably not an obvious analogue, for example, not 3 = e. e.g. port_lbananastr*etstongariro

At that point you'll have a password which is essentially not brute forceable (with todays tech) and still possible to remember.

  • $5 USD per month seems a bit too much for me for password security.. I will stick with the free version

But what precautions do you take to protect the LastPass in the first place?

2fa? password to unlock it? fingerprint scan?

  • thanks for the post. it's really time for me to start using something sophisticated.

did i need to enter a promo code anywhere? or automatically 12 months free when using this link?

The deal URL now goes to a landing page where it says you need to jump through more hoops by emailing first to verify you have a canva account.

However the following direct link works:

    https://start.1password.com/sign-up/family?c=CANVA2019&l=en

I found that link posted on another site where someone had used the Internet Archive Wayback Machine to discover it.

    • +1

Thanks for the update! Link updated and credit added to the description.

  • After the 365 day trial period ends your 1Password account will be frozen if you do not subscribe/pay:

    https://support.1password.com/frozen-account/

And the minimum fee to continue is 36 USD per year.

    • Still better than paying 36USD this year. You can still export your items to another service.

  • I've had around 5 years of free Dashlane (via referrals from a comment i made on an article about password managers somewhere, and still have 6.5 years more free ), i really wanted to change but Bitwarden windows app is icky and unfinished (have to login to website to import passwords), didnt like Lastpass either, alywas liked 1pass (was just a bit too pricey to commit) has a very nice UI and feature set, if its good enough ill be happy to stay after the trial ends if im happy with it.

Dashlane's browser integration is rather annoying so hopefully 1pass works nicer in that regard.

  • This is a stellar find!
I've been thinking of trying out 1Password for a while now but didn't want to commit to paid version. Going to be switching over from LastPass to 1Password to give it a go now.
