Telstra $45pm for 12m with 50GB & $200 JB Gift Card or $65pm for 24m with 80GB & $300/$500 Credit for Phone Purchase @ JB Hi-Fi

1060

I know this has been available before, but it's back again. Might be worth asking if you can get a $10 port in discount again.

I have been waiting for this one, but also considering Boost. This deal is better for me as I want the extra data, not the international calls. No idea of expiry date.

*Available to port-in customers and new Telstra customers only. Excludes Telstra Pre-Paid, Boost and Belong customers. Minimum cost $540. Offer not in conjunction with any other offer. For terms & conditions visit www.jbhifi.com.au/telstra-terms.

  • i got this plan last time and am nearing the end of my 12 months, whats the chances of me switching over to a new provider and then switching back to claim this deal?

    • +2

By the sounds of things from last time this was posted you have to have ported out for at least a month before you can be eligible to claim this deal when porting back in.

      • My 12 months won't be for awhile, but currently i managed to snag the 50gb plan for $25 per month… so it will be a hard decision when it comes my time…. haha

        • +7

          Tell the story how…

            • +10

@lplau: did you have to send noods?

      • Seems to vary between JB stores.

I was ported out to Optus pre-paid for a matter of hours and was still able to get the $200 gift-card.

Haven't had any success with getting the $10 port-in discount from Telstra though. Would appreciate a reference number if anybody is successful.

        • I ported out for a week and had no trouble porting back in. Even changed to the $59 70GB Telstra plan and still qualified for the $10 port in credit. I don't have a reference number unfortunately.

It depends on the agent you speak with as to the success of getting the port in credit.

EDIT: also did this with an active Telstra account (different service).

          • @wellzi: The current objection that I've been hitting is that it's a JB Hi-Fi Plan and they "can't" physically apply the port-in credit on their end.

I'd imagine there isn't the same problem when it's one of the current Telstra Go Mobile plans.

        • Does my comment thread on this post help at all?

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/407199?page=6#comment

          • @pancaeks: I tried direct through live chat and they said that because it was a JB HiFi Plan they couldn't apply the port in credit.

You wouldn't happen to have an order number you could PM me? They usually seem ok to do something if they can see that someone else has done it first.

      • I was on another provider for just a couple of days last time and it worked fine. Other people reported minutes. Though some people had problems when it was less than < 1 day.

    • +1

I ported out to Kogan in preperation for doing this in the near future.
I think the deal will likely last a while, but maybe worth ringing Jbhifi to find out.

  • Keep in mind I dont think you can do the port out of telstra and back in again on the same day trick that was possible previously.

You will have to wait a 2-4 weeks I'm told to be removed from the Telstra backend until you can port in again.

    • +3

Thats BS. Basically they trying to avoid people porting out and porting back in to get their $200 gift card.
There is nothing in their system which prevents this. This is the process they go through:
      1. Call JB Head Office and verify your mobile account and when you ported out
      2. Log into Telstra Portal and create a new contract
      3. You are done.

Depending on which store you walk into and the lazyness of the person you speak to, they will skip step 1 and go straight to Step 2.
If it doesn't work for you, go to another store….

      • +4

        i didnt even have that.
ported to optus pre-paid, waited for the activation,
walked up to jb asked to sign up to the plan
guy asked if i had any previous telstra accounts, said yes, he said fantastic, then i dont need id check
logged into telstra portal and created contract
walked out 15 minutes later with gift card, as have to wait for the port back to activate before you get it.
all done in about 45 minutes (last december)

        • .. and the $10 credit for Port in?

          • @PuppieWayne: i didnt get a port in credit, no
            not to say you cant

      • Yeah the guy at JB tried to actually port the number back but I was watching and the system threw an error basically saying the ID was still in telstra's backend system. As if he couldn't bypass the error. Told me to come back in a few weeks.

      • Pretty much we can just see the date or disconnection within the account for connections manually done within store, whether not this is performed would come down to who you get and whether they know to/choose to check

        • Oh the guy working was happy to push the order through, it was just that the system didn't let him proceed with my existing number as the telstra system was telling him that it already existed.

          • @robbiey: In the first 48 hours since a port it might still think your numbers with Telstra, the 30 day period is more a deterrent to stop people just porting in and out, I don't believe the system will actually reject the number within those 30 days (Not that I've tried to do one within the time frame)

  • do they currently have any port in discounts?

  • Effectively 340 over 12 months. Literally renewed my kogan $25/40gb yesterday… Sad times

    • +1

Good thing about the JB plan is that it is a "Telstra" plan. Which means full telstra coverage not MVNO coverage.

      • -1

MVNOs have Full testra coverage, it's not 2014 any more bro. Please don't misinform people.

they don't have volte, vowifi and are capped to 100mbps speed.

I'm an aldimobile user for a year.

    • -2

I mean, if you're planning to buy a phone, you could look at it that way? It's not a gift card - it has to be spent on a handset, as per the T&Cs, unfortunately.

      • +1

Nope. the $200 JB Gift Card on the $45 plan can be spent anywhere you want (e.g. they literally give you a gift card). Where as the $65pm plan the credit must be spent on a new handset. In the case of $65pm they take it directly off the receipt price.

        • My bad, I was looking at the $500 offer, which says below:

To receive the $500 phone credit the handset purchase price must be a minimum value of $999. Phone credit can’t be used on any other items in store. handset must be purchased the same day the connection is made

That's all I was going off.

  • My mum just moved hers from voda to this and I enquired if she can get a port in credit but Telstra said that offer is no longer available.

    • +1

      Damn I missed this face

  • Got the 50gb plan about a month or so ago and you could get a monthly $10 discount in the live chat too. So currently paying $35 a month

    • But no JB Gift Card?

      • still got the $200 gift card too, check the old deal

    • Got a reference number?

      • No need a reference number (INT-XXXXXXXX), they cant check it anyways due to privacy reasons. Just contact 24x7 chat, it is a Russian roulette, try until they give you it.

    • Do you do that before or after you sign up?

  • +2

I’m stuck on Optus until Dec, otherwise I’d be all over this deal.

    • I used to get out of their sim only contact by calling up support telling them I've moved to a new place and the coverage is not good enough. They will ask you to try a few things like restart your phone etc, you just have to keep saying no change. They'll then agree to let you cancel the contract.

      • +2

I’m not really comfortable doing that I guess. Optus might not be the best Telco but they’re still providing me with everything that I’m paying for so I don’t really feel like I can do that as their upholding their end. There will probably be something from another Telco come the end of the year, if not, I’ll just find something cheaper. Thanks for the reply :)

  • +1

This is still an ongoing deal, last time I went in the end date for this deal was 30th June 2019 at the Melbourne Central Store.

Offer is also available for existing customers except you don’t get the gift card.

  • I like oputso $60 per month and plus free Ipad….

    • how do you get this?

      • +2

this was April's promotion — I think it will be on the market again ($60 per month 200G + ipad

    • Could you get this plan and use it in a MBB device? Just read the terms CIS and its for handset only use with no sharing of data

      • +1

I'm using the SIM in a secondhand modem instead of the iPad

    • Can the iPad sim be used for data and calls/SMS? Thanks

  • So I'm assuming with the $500 giftcard i can purchase galaxy note 9 that's on promotion for $1099 currently? Also can anyone tell me about the $10 off promo? Is it permonth? Thanks

    • +1

The OP should make it clear that the $10pm off promo isn't run by JB Hifi. You contact telstra chat and ask them for it. It is all about luck, you may need to speak to them multiple times with different operators.

      • Cheers mate!

  • When it says “excludes prepaid” does that mean I can’t port from a Telstra prepaid service?

    • You can move from a Telstra prepaid service but you will not be eligible for the gift card.

  • Could someone ask if the 69 a month promo include 200 gift card.

    • +1

No, it comes with credit to buy another phone. Hence the big "OR" in the title. You get one or the other, not both.

  • My 12 month sim only contract with Optus ends 18th of June, can I only sign up to this new Telstra sim only plan after that date? Will I be charged extra by Optus? Looking at the latest Optus bill that shouldn't happen as I've already paid for the charges from 18 May to 18 June and I won't be incurring any extra usage charges? Many thanks.

    • You wouldn't be charged any extra, you're off contract

    • Usually Optus charges one month in advance. So there is a chance you will end up with a month's credit on your account which they won't refund and can't be used; Unless you have someone else on Optus to whom you can transfer the credit.

      • On a Postpaid account you can request for them to refund it, since it is considered "cash". If they don't refund it, escalate it, and if they still dont, then threaten them with Ombudsman. Often at this point they will do it, since ombudsman complaints inflict a fee on the company (i think approx $150 per case).

Only prepaid accounts they will not refund since it isn't stored as "cash" instead it becomes "main credit" for calling and data.

        • I tried getting a refund before and no threats work mate. They only offered transfer to another account which they eventually did. Unless someone got a refund from this mob I wouldn't be so sure.

  • I got the $10 port in discount and the gift card

    • +4

Can you please provide more details as to how and when you've applied for the offer? Thanks mate!

      • Ditto. If you've got an order number for the port-in discount.

        • +13

No point with a order number. Just contact Telstra Chat and ask them.
The order numbers and case numbers are linked to an account so they cannot search it up unless the original owner of the account has provided authorisation.

Wonder why people are so scared to contact Telstra Chat, if 1 chat says no, then close it and open a new chat. Rinse and Repeat.

If you are too lazy to type it in yourself here is what you ask:
Hi, I have recently joined telstra postpaid and i was told in store that there was a port in bonus of $10pm discount, can you please help me apply this?

          • @lplau: Wait. So I sign up for the deal instore, after that's done I ask chat to give me a retrospective $10pm discount? Or I ask for the discount first before signing up instore?

          • @lplau: I just did. Thanks mate.

          • @lplau: Went through the LiveChat roulette and hit success on my 4th try.

    • When today? Any issues getting the discount?

      • There is always issues getting the discount.. all comes down to luck, you may get it on your first chat agent or maybe 20 chat agents. Just keep trying.

  • Shame JB doesn't have the S10+ 5G.

    • We do indeed have the 5G S10's, though they can currently only be given out alongside a Telstra contract, whether it be one of these offers or on a plan.

      • Are those plans 5G though?

        • To the best of my knowledge yes, though it hasn't actually been explicitly stated.

  • can you port in from aldi?

  • Did this yesterday and requested via live chat the $10 discount.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it shouldn't go up in price after 12 months. The price is usually locked in for the life of the plan.

    • Did this yesterday and requested via live chat the $10 discount.

So did they end up applying $10 port in credit to your account?

Can you please also confirm if you signed up to the same plan from JB?

      • +2

Yes they did and yes I took up the same plan listed with the 200 jb gift card.

  • I had someone tell me that they got this deal porting from Telstra Business. Can anyone confirm??

    • Im interested in finding out too!

  • -2

Can someone tell me how to port in to a different carrier and then port back? I'm completely unfamiliar with this trick.

  • The problem I've had over the last 9 months with my gift card is buying anything from JB with the gift card that isn't substantially ($50-100) cheaper elsewhere.

    • They will price match normally, so you should be able to get something at a decent price.

  • Damn! I am on the $39pm/30gb Telstra plan from November.
Oh well, fingers crossed they do something like this for Black Friday.
Shame it’s port in/new customers only though.
Will have to port out and then back in once one of these deals happen.

  • Do JB ever do these deals for other companies, or is it just Telstra?

I'm already with Telstra, so hard to take advantage without wasting time porting out and in.

    • +1

Always Telstra. Upgrades are currently eligible for the $65 offer, the $45 plan is available but will you will not receive the $200 gift card.

  • So to be clear this is only for ppl on a contract who transfer to JBHiFi Telstra Plan? Can you get a new number? Or would I need to get a Sim plan activated and then port it across to get this?
    Thanks

  • can anyone tell me what are the steps?

go to jbhifi and sign the 12mths telatra contracts and get the jbhifi card,

then call telstra to get the $10 off port in offer ?

    or

call telstra, sign the 12 mths contracts , ask port in offer, then ask for jbhifi card to deliver to home?

    • can anyone tell me what are the steps?
go to jbhifi and sign the 12mths telatra contracts and get the jbhifi card,
then call telstra to get the $10 off port in offer ?

      this

  • I'm with Telstra already, SIM-only plan, no contract… I was getting ready to buy a new iPhone anyway, so this sounds like it'd be good for me to hop on.

According to these comments, I'd need to port my mobile number to another carrier, eg optus prepaid, wait a couple of days, and then go into the store to claim this deal?

    • Eligible for $65 regardless of Port in or upgrade with the respective $300 or $500 credit

For the $200 gift card on the $45 have to be off the Telstra network for 30 days, else you can just re-contract for the data and price minus the gift card

      • How long is this deal planning to be around? Not long enough to cancel and wait out the 30 days…?

        • This same offer has been around quite a while just not advertised publicly, though they can alter them at any time with no notice and there's no way for us to honour them if that's the case so hesitant to give guarantees.

      • I don't follow. On the $65 deal, there's a big * on the $500 phone credit, with the bit underneath saying "Available to port-in customers and new Telstra customers only."

That seems to indicate I would not be able to claim the $500 credit.

      • +1

        How do you port out?
Do you just go into OPTUS store and ask to be switched over to prepaid?

        • i just went to i think it was officeworks, buy prepaid sim, go to the online activation page, fill out your particulars and wait 15 minutes

  • +3

Something to be wary of is this remains incompatible with Telstra's $10 international calling pack add-on of that's a necessity, PAYG is the only option available

    • Is international day pass also incompatible?

      • +1

        International day pass does work

  • So after a bit of a chat with Telstra, they've managed to give me a reference number which I should apparently be able to quote to JB Hi-Fi in order to get the $45 plan with $200 gift card PLUS $10 port-in credit.
I'll update you all tomorrow afternoon.
