  • For those that use Plex on theirs, do you use the Plex live TV function? I bought a Plex pass ages ago just for the DVR functionality but I found it's useless when paired with my Xbox One. Live TV transcodes, and it takes 10~ seconds just to get the live TV running, and also to change the channel. It makes it pretty much unworkable so I went back to my old Windows Media Centre setup.

Apparently with the Nvidia Shield, live TV is no longer transcoded so it's a lot quicker to start streaming. I'd love to know how the VTV works!

    • Did a quick test before work with my HDHomerun, and the VTV direct plays the same as the Shield.

  • Bought two last year for my not so tech savvy parents. they have learned how to serve themselves endless netflix and youtube now (courtesy of the remote)

you can't be serious??? People buy this to record FTA TV? Inbuilt Chromecast functionality? Seriously?

    • … what?

      • +4

I think tempura has been battered

  • I got one of these for my parents to use as a TV tuner, can't fault it.

    • Might be a dump question, but does one need this as a TV tuner, doesn't all TV comes with TV tuner?

      • +1

Some older TVs don't support the H264 channels, or even any HD.

      • broke my antenna port on my tv- rrepair centre wanted $250 to fix.
        This box is great

      • my parents have this connected to a projector in their theater room, so yeah its a needed feature for free to air television

  • Does anyone know if the remote buttons can be reprogrammed? I have one of these and want to change the youtube button to youtube kids.

  • Can you download Stan and Amazon prime to this box?

  • can someone please link to the prime app APK that works, All the ones i have tried have stutter.

    • See post below for link to APKs that may work for you.

  • +1

Can Voda TV successful sideload the Amazon Prime Vid app, or only do Netflix and Chromecast?

Kinda' frustrating as we have a Fetch and multiple WD TVLives which cover Netflix, Stan, FTA iView, SBS etc in 1080P which is fine for us ATM. Our TV is an older 2011 Samsung so can't DL the Amazon Prime app. and we won't want to buy a Firestick Basic when we know the UK/EU/US 4k model must surely be be arriving in AU soon. Of the other sub AUD$100 boxes, Xiaomi doesn't do Prime either AFAIK. Roku?

There are a few versions of Amazon Prime in the link below that people have had varying success with on the Vodafone TV (and Mi Box):

      https://mega.nz/#F!PaJQELqY!dg3wVzOFIybj6an5Yeq7PA

…however, there is a native Amazon Prime app for Android TV being released hopefully within the next month or so, which will be available directly from the Play Store:

      https://www.androidheadlines.com/2019/04/prime-video-android…

FYI Amazon Prime in now available on Telstra TV too:

      https://exchange.telstra.com.au/amazon-prime-video-app-comes…

      • +1
        • "AmazonPrimeVideo_4.7.9-for-xiaomi-android-tv.apk" = Stutters every 2-3 secs

        • "AmazonPrimeVideo_4.12.5_NvidiaShield.apk" = Stutters for the first 10-15sec then stops, but need more time to test.

        • +1

          "AmazonPrimeVideo_4.12.5_NvidiaShield.apk"

The stuttering settles down a lot but it's persistent for me nonetheless (a glitch about every 10 seconds or so on average).

The standard Android version of the Prime Video app doesn't stutter at all but you need to pair a mouse to control it properly.

kodi lena runs terrible on this, had to downgrade back to krypton FYI.

  • +1

But this has been $72 every day for ages.

  • Is kayo a native app or so you need to sideload somehow? Want something easy to use for parents.

    • Kayo is currently sideloaded. Kayo say they're working on it, but no idea.

Other than that, it's pretty easy to navigate.

  • Would this run the Kodi Foxtel Go app

    • +4

Control F "Foxtel" and you will find your answer.

Do I need this if i have an Xbox one re Kodi or anything else? Sounds like a no.

    • No. But since you are on here you should own at least one

That's what I'm feeling. All ready got the 90pc screwdriver set, cast iron pan, Bluetooth shower speaker etc etc. Heroin simulation

        • Any eneloops?

        White out silly.

I'm thinking of buying this and gifting it to my dad overseas. Any issues that I'm missing? It shouldn't be region locked I presume?

    • I've got the same idea…

    • The only issue you may have is the digital tuner may not work depending on which country you are sending this to.

      • I'm pretty sure there will be no problems other than you would need a power plug for the applicable country. Since it comes with an Australian power adapter in the box.

        • Link below may disagree with you.

          https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Digital_terrestrial_tel…

*depends on the country you are sending to obviously.

          • @xoom: Yes obviously countries which runs on PAL TV signals and DVB-T. But come to think of it the TV guide may be an issue if you can't change it from Australian locations.

But the actual media player functions would be fine.

            • +1

              @hollykryten:

Yes obviously countries which runs on PAL TV signals and DVB-T.

Well thats what i was saying. If only the whole world had dvb-t broadcast then you can take/send this box anywhere and it would work.

Yes yes media playback will work but thats not what i said the issue could be now is it?

    • Just to confirm:

I bought one of these for family in the UK.

Everything works, including the digital tuner. They don't really have a need to use the FTA but it works.

Otherwise, Play Store, Netflix etc all work.

      • That's because the UK uses dvb-t and dvb-t2 much like we do. Some other parts of the world don't.

  • I've got a headache reading all of the above and I still don't know if this box is good or not!?

    • +3

150+ positive votes should be a good indicator

Having said that apart from chromecasting from chrome browswer this box works very well.

    • +1

      Yes it’s good. Grab one.

      • Yes, I've got a feeling it's pretty good.
I just wonder if I really need it as I already have an Apple TV for Netflix and Kayo which is pretty much all I watch, in addition to free-to-air of course.

        • +1

          Yes, you still need it.

          • @pauper: The only extra I can think of is maybe international channels with something like Kodi app?
            Is there any other advantage?

  • Would someone with this, be able to please let me know if they can download the TVBAnywhere app on it?

  • Novice here so excuse my ignorance. What is the benefit of these (inc Apple TV, chrimecast etc)? Don’t most tvs have Netflix, Stan, YouTube apps built in, or things like Fetch TV? What would you use this for?

    • +1

Eventually your tv's apps stopped getting updated.

      • -1

These Vodafone TV boxes will also stop getting updated at some point too some time after they release a new model.

        • The difference is these tv boxes are cheap as oppose to buying a new tv.

          • @xoom: That's true. I use a Vodafone TV with my Kogan 43" 4K dumb TV (LG panel) which i paid only $299 + delivery for. The interface on the dumb TV is much faster and so is the Vodafone TV smart interface. I heard that the Kogan smart TV interface is rather slow so i opted not to buy one.

For those wondering about Kayo - native app available on basically ALL other android tv boxes except this one. You can get the apk for VTV, but it doesn't support split screen function. Either than or use the chromecast as OP suggested.

  • Please help - I cannot get HDR working on my recently purchased VTV. I have connected it to my Onkyo TX-NR676 receiver which is connected to my 75" HDR Panasonic TV. I can get HDR output when I use Panasonic TV's Netflix native app but when I use VTV Netflix app for same (or any) title I do not see HDR, it shows only 4K ultra I think. I can get HDR and Atmos from my Xbox one S connected similarly to the receiver. HDR is enabled on my Voda TV, how do I get HDR working on it? Reason I'll be using VTV instead of TV's native app is to access US Netflix etc using VPN.

    • Check your amp settings menu, usually you have to enable HDR for each individual input that supports it (hdmi1, hdmi2, etc)

      • Thanks for reply, but there is no HDR settings on receiver.. I didn't had to set anything on my receiver for my XBox one, HDR works from XBox connected to receiver.. All 6 HDMI inputs on receiver are HDR capable (HDCP 2.2) so it should work on Voda TV box as well… Not sure whats going on, couldn't figure outyet.. Does Netflix HDR really works from voda TV box, is anyone able to get HDR from Vofa box? Netflix does mention Xbox one S, Nvidia Shield etc as HDR10 capable devices but Vodafone TV box is not mentioned so I'm not sure if it is possible.. https://help.netflix.com/en/node/42384

    • Check in VTV settings menu and ensure HDR is enabled (from memory, I think it's in Display settings).

      • Yes HDR is already enabled on my VTV.. I tried disabling and re-enabling, restarting all devices, even tried connecting VTV directly on my Panasonic TV, still I do not get HDR signal from Netflix, youtube etc.. But I do get HDR from Xbox, Panasonic TVs native Netflix app, TVs youtube app.. I couldn't figure out how to get it from VTV

  • Thanks OP, got one - can't go wrong with a $72 media player.

  • Has anyone experienced an issue where it won't display when turned on with the remote? It only works if I hard reset it by unplugging the power. I get audio fine but just a black screen.

I've played with the display settings TV and my Samsung TV but can't work out which side the issue is on.

  • Does the voice search work with other apps or only YouTube?

    • I know it works for Plex too. Not sure about others

      • Thanks. It seems that it is app dependent rather than anything else because I am getting Netflix results alongside YouTube.

        • If I search for Peppa pig on Plex, it'll only show the episodes on Plex not YouTube results.

I've disabled Netflix on the VodafoneTV as we don't use it and it was pinging Netflix every couple of seconds, according to my Pi-Hole. So I don't know if those results would show if it wasn't disabled.

    not a TV

  • How does this compare to using an xbox 1? (i have the tuner from a past deal)

  • Has anyone tried to use a HDMI break out cable to get HDMI video and a discrete audio feed for the use of VTV with a projector/soundbar setup?

    • I have not done this but my VTV is connected to the TV and TV in turn is connected to a YAS207 on the ARC port. I don't know how, but YouTube videos played on VTV make the soundbar sounds so much better as compared to the native TV app.

  • Did the Add to Cart stop working?

  • Can the remote be used to control the tv volume?

    • Thats a no.

      • +1

Or a yes if you have HDMI CEC on your TV!

    • +1

You can over HDMI CEC, but not IR.

    • +1

Yeah if you have a newish TV then HDMI CEC is awesome as it turns the TV on/off when you turn the VTV on/off, and allows you to control the TV volume from the VTV remote.

  • I just purchased this and keep getting a Bluetooth error which gets stuck in a loop - "Unfortunately, Bluetooth share has stopped." Is anyone else getting this error?

    • Never heard of that. Try a factory reset and start again.

    • I get this sometimes as well.. mostly when connecting my bluetooth speaker

  • Can confirm that these are brilliant Android TV boxes. I have an Nvidia Shield TV box hooked up to my main TV, but bought one of these to take with me and use when I'm travelling or housesitting. Works really well as both an Android streaming device (Netflix, Stan etc) and as a media player (when you plug in a USB drive and use VLC/MX to play the files etc). Love the fact that the remote has the voice control feature too.

If you can't afford an Nvidia Shield, or you just want a cheap secondary box for a secondary TV in your house, definitely get one of these!

PS. If you don't want to wait for delivery, you can get these in Vodafone stores, I picked one up at a Sunshine Coast store.

    • I found that no desktop drives come up on the Vodafone TV and I had to buy JS USB OTG to get anything working. USB thumb drives worked though in FAT32 format.

      • +1

That's odd, I have plugged in both USB stick and USB portable hard drives, formatted as exFat and NTFS drives, and haven't had any issues playing from any of them.

Have you updated the Vodafone TV box to the most up to date software? That might fix it. If that doesn't work. try formatting the drives you want to use to Fat32 using this tool:

        http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?guiformat.htm

It's not ideal, but might be worth a shot, especially if you have a dedicated USB drive that you use for the Vodafone TV box.

        • Fat32 does not play files larger than 2GB. We’re your drives 4TB and larger? And to be specific I’m talking about drives that have ripped blu Ray movies, not a HDD device setup for recording tv to it

          • @UberIsCool: Oh okay, no I don't have any drives larger than 2TB, and I also don't have any single media file (movie, TV show episode etc) bigger than 2GB on those drives, so converting to/running media from Fat32 has never been an issue for me.

          • @UberIsCool: fat32 doesn't support larger than 4GB (3.9gb is fine) but he didn't say anything about fat32

I have plugged in both USB stick and USB portable hard drives, formatted as exFat and NTFS drives, and haven't had any issues playing from any of them.

exFat has no such file size limitation

  • How is wifi on these boxes - is it better than Mi Box? My Mi Box was was fine but started to drop connection lately.

  • Couldn’t find this anywhere but Hours later I finally got mine playing .m4v off 4TB external powered HDD. Had to use JS USB OTG on Google App Store and HDD is in ExFAT format.

  • Does this have all the Australian Tv apps? Plus7 9Now 10Play SBS on demand and ABC Iview?

Purchased Vodafone tv in the weekend, so far very happy with the purchase

    Few of the features
    1. Vanilla android tv software comes with Netflix and Youtube preinstalled.
    2. In build Tv tuner - no need to switch between HDMI ports.
    3. Great remote with google voice button, will save you from annoying typing using the remote.
    4. I am not using NetFlix, so remapped Netflix button on remote with amazon prime video(very handy if you want to reuse remote buttons.) FYI you can trigger multiple apps based on single or multiple presses of the button. I have used this app for remapping -> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=flar2.homebutt…
    5. Before purchase I was curious to know if I can use VPN apps on this, can confirm VPN app (in my case PIA) working flawlessly.

As noted by other members, few of the android apps will not work as only apps ticked for android tv are visible in app search. But you can install non-market apps, there is no restriction.

    Hope this will help others.

    • Just wondering how you managed to map the Netflix button. I have the same app set up and have mapped new buttons even YouTube but every time i try to map the Netflix button it opens Netflix.

Ive also tried disabling Netflix so when you push the button nothing happens but in the remapping app when you push the button it doesnt open Netflix but it also doesnt configure.

      • This option is not working anymore after a software update early this year.

        • No worries. Thought that might have been the case
