Downvoted for poor reference interrupting my pause YouTube video.

Edit: upvoted, because I misspressed and already used up all my negs on comments about plastic toy ban crusaders

  • +1

    These are normally around $100
    That’s a good price thanks

  • +6

Both too light for framing hammers IMO. If you're a home handyman looking for an all round hammer don't buy a milled face hammer. (unless you like putting checkered patterns on everything you hit). Other than that, great brand, good quality, brilliant shock absorbing grips.

    • Others available with smooth face, check the last link.

      • +3

        I'm available with a smooth face ;)

    • +2

I prefer milled face for rough work like stud walls because I'm not skilled enough to do a full swing with a smooth face.

That milled face is more forgiving.

      • +1

Does milled face slip less or something? What is the purpose?

        • +4

          Correct.

        • +2

Slips less at the expense of making a waffle pattern on anything it contacts.

Not suitable for presentation surface work.

farming hammer?… for when u cant afford a cattle gun?

  • Ripper. Bought a 3lb drilling hammer for 20 bucks delivered on the last day of my Prime trial.

  • What does a framing hammer do?

    • +1

It is typically a bit heavier for 3" nails. Used for timber making house frames.

    • +2

Longer overall length and bigger face. Usually heavier although 22Oz is a fairly standard hammer weight.

    • What does a framing hammer do?

Framing as the name implies and home defense.

  • +1

My dad was a carpenter. He always used Estwing hammers. He preferred the 16oz ones though. They had solid steel shafts which meant they didn't break like the fibreglass or wooden ones. And didn't bend like the hollow steel ones.

    • Thanks. Bought the 16oz instead of the 20oz which is on the op link.

Bought it because I need to use a hammer whilst consulting using my gorilla pose.

  • Why is it called a "framing" hammer?

  • Damn, just got an interior hammer yesterday for the same price.

  • +17

This is what you use when you want to commit a murder but want someone else to take the blame.

  • +1

Just bought the 16oz one… Awesome price

  • +1

Anyone reckon this would be good for scaffolding?

    • +23

You'd need a lot of them to make a scaffold.

      • +1

I purchased one of these with a flat face/head for $34…

Also one of these to bash in pegs/stakes!

    Cheers OP!

  • when do u use a nail gun and when a hammer?

    • +11

You use a nail gun to fire nails at the site dunny when your mates in there. If you really want to scare them you throw your hammer.

      • Nice. But tfw you DON'T do it to the apprentice and they complain to the boss that they feel left out.

  • +1

    Bargaining Power +10 when equipped

  • +1

Don't even need a hammer but will purchase one for home to add to the Ozbargain recommended hardware selection.

Now to just select a weight. Seems 20oz is standard looking at the Bunnings hammer selection?

    • It depends. I think 16oz is standard for an all around hammer, and 20oz is for a framing one. You can go to Bunnings and try to be sure though.

    • ⅛ is a normal size so 20oz would last a long time

      • How did you type 1/8?

        • +2

          The same way you did.

          But I used ALT + 8539

  • Which is the best hammer for a novice? I do basic stuff around the house. Could someone link it?
    Cheers.

    • +2

Not a framing hammer. Anything heavier than 16oz is really used to strike at fat nails to sink them in one blow.

If you're going to be tapping at nails and then hitting them 5-6 times to sink it, the weight of the hammer works against you.

        • The 16oz is fine. Lighter may be better to build your confidence.

Practice letting the weight do the job.

          • @[Deactivated]: Cheers mate, grabbed the 16oz and cancelled my order on the 20oz.

            • +3

@AjsGuns: A good way to practice is get your offcut timber, screw or clamp it against something and just whack nails into it. Ideally, tap to position, move your fingers away, strike once.

Not always possible with bigger/longer nails with lighter hammers.

              • @[Deactivated]: Cheers for your help mate :)
Grew up with a single mum, so not the best at construction stuff haha.

                • @AjsGuns: Ah.

A lifetime ahead to catch up although having said that, many modern men do nothing around the house so relatively, you're not too short in that department.

                • +2

@AjsGuns: If you happen to be interested in improving your skills joining a men's shed could help. There should be plenty of guys there who are more than happy to pass on skills and life knowledge.

        • A ripping hammer may not be as good as a curved claw for pulling nails, but it looks more versatile overall.

      • Thanks. Probably made in China compared to the Estwing Made in USA but looks ok!

        • the fibreglass handle will break

      • Very good option for homegamers! Good price.
Eastwing is really for prosumer and professional work.

  • Thank you :)

Really? Ozbargainers are paying that much for a hammer?

    • +3

I use a free brick that I took from a construction site.

      • +1

There'll be no hospital then. I'll tell the children

        (ref)

        • Somebody got it OH YEAH

    • +3

All Estwing hammers are $73.80+ at Bunnings.

    • +12

Why not. It's OzBargain, not OzCheapCrap.

    • -3

My last hammer cost me $2 for SCA and user a free $5 voucher

    • I need a new 28oz and it's cheaper at Bunnings for $92.

    • In the same manner, Ozito drill costs $50 and Dewalt/Metabo etc cost $200+. Does it worth? is all depend on what you use it for.

  • +6

I think for most people on here though a basic $10 hammer from bunnings will do. Used to use these ages ago when I built houses and was excellent for framing.

    • +3

My Ikea tool set comes in handy and only for $15. The hammer does the job when I need one.

    • +1

$10? Mine was free with the tool bag :P
But yeah it's done the job the few times I needed it, and most times I'm using it with a nail punch.
I use a mallet a lot more than a hammer, usually when bunting things in place or assembling IKEA stuff.

Very interesting. Can see why they cost so much. Thanks for the link.

  • Grabbed a wrecking bar as well as a 16oz

Thanks ordered the rubber mallet and a strike engineers hammer.
(that one click buy is dangerous)

    • Yeah shits over ebays system. Unfortunately most au sellers haven't bothered putting best foot forward with amazon.

  • +1

Had this in my cart forever
Finally pulled the trigger on the 16oz

  • +2

I've just ordered one. Currently doing Reno's and have some framing work with hardwood and 100mm nails coming up. This hammer will be perfect.

    Thanks op 👍
