Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade Family Pack (3 Licences) + $50 Fuel + $25 DSE Gift Card for $147

1530

Dick Smith Electronics has the Windows 7 Home Premium family (triple) pack for $147. At the point of sale they include a $25 DSE gift card. Apparently the $25 gift card comes with all versions of Microsoft Windows during the promotion.

Microsoft is running a promotion where you get a $50 Caltex StarCash fuel card (via redemption) when you purchase a copy of Windows 7.

Works out at less than $24 per license. Details of the fuel offer are at http://www.windows7fueloffer.com.au/

    Finally… a good bargain.

    Thanks OP

  • +1

that seems like a pretty good deal. Thanks

  • +1

    Good deal.

  • +1

Does the fact that it's an upgrade pack mean that it's not eligible for the fuel offer?

"2. Offer is only valid on one (1) or more genuine retail version of Microsoft® Windows® 7 full packaged products including Windows® 7 Home Premium, Windows® 7 Home Premium Family Pack, Windows® 7 Professional and Windows® 7 Ultimate (Eligible Products) purchased from a retail outlet in Australia between 2 June 2011 and 22 July 2011 (Promotional Period). Windows® 7 Anytime Upgrade packs are excluded from this Offer. "

    • I think "Anytime upgrade" is when you call MS to get a key that allows you to turn your Home Premium install disk into an Ultimate install disk.
Windows 7 install disks are universal, ie the disk stores everything required to install Ultimate even though it says it's a Home Premium only disk.

      • +2

So do we need to call MS to get the key to install this? I have XP (not sure if its a legit version though, as I bought it off a person I knew) and want to upgrade to Win 7, will this be the type of disk I'd use to upgrade?

        • -1

You can't upgrade from XP to Win7.

        • +2

          MrZ:-
          It says on the linked page;
"If you have Windows XP or Windows Vista, you can purchase Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade. If you're running Windows 2000, a different operating system or have a computer that currently has no operating system, you'll need to purchase the full product."

So XP upgrade is possible. :)

        • -1

I have actually tried upgrading XP to Win7 - the "upgrade" option is usually greyed out or says it can't be done. You can only do a clean install.

        • +3

You cannot upgrade from XP to Win7, you can download a disc of Vista and upgrade your XP to Vista and not enter a serial (unactivated) then once the install is complete upgrade that to Windows 7.

        • +1

If you have XP running on a system, then MS says you can use the Upgrade version of Windows 7, however, it will not move over settings and things unless you upgrade from Vista.

          http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/help/upgrading-f…

Effectively you're doing a clean install (hard drive gets wiped)

          HERE ARE THE FACTS:

Here are digital photos, I just took, to show what comes with each pack.
          http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/5205/win7included.jpg

It includes this white card, with instructions specifically on this question.
          http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/672/xptowin7.jpg

So please Vote+ this, and stop saying you can't do it. You're not helping others.
You can do it, it's legal/valid, supported, and quick.

There's also a complete tutorial from Microsoft (link mentioned on the white card)
          http://windows.microsoft.com/upgrade-windows-xp

    • I thought the family pack only comes in "Upgrade"?

This version is definitely eligible though.

  • +1

How did you get the $25 voucher?

    • +1

I received the DSE gift card (not a voucher), at the point of sale. I bought it over the counter, the assistant validated the gift card and handed it to me with the sales receipt. I don't know the online process. You'd have to enquire with DSE.

      • +1

Ah no worries, I ordered online to collect it from my local DSE, so hopefully they'll hand me a card when I go in. I just wanted to check so that they don't try to be "dodgy" and not give me the voucher (If it is a promotion).

        • +1

If you use click and collect, the system doesn't offer you the gift card when you are at the counter.

Its no problem, it just means the guy in store has to take it off the click and collect order and then rescan it.

    • I just purchased 3 copies (total of 9 computers).
      I checked-first if I'd only get 1 or 3 gift cardss.
The staff member wasn't aware about it, at all, until
she fired-up the register. "No probs. 1 per product".
So I got 3 seperate $25 WISH vouchers.
      $441.00 spent at register
      $75 of gift cards
$150 fuel vouchers (soon from Microsoft).

Gift cards can be spent easily, with normal weekly spend.
1 week from now, I'll only be out of pocket $216.

  • If I am not correct please shoot me down but I think that can also only do in-place upgrade if upgrading from Vista Home Basic or Vista Home Premium. Otherwise requires clean install.

    Sourced from here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_7_editions

    • Many ways to get around it and do a "fresh" install using upgrades, just google it.

      • +1

Really? I just tried Googling and the top half dozen results all confirmed that if you wanted to go from Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Home Premium (like in my case) you have to do a clean install (which obviously can be done using either an upgrade or non-upgrade disk but requires all your programs and settings to be manually re-installed).

I know a lot of people would recommend clean install anyway so that all the previous OS bloat is removed but I don't have the time to do that in the foreseeable future so rules this offer out for me.

If it can definitely be done if you could point me further in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

        • +2

I don't think dingdong555 quite understood what you wanted to do. Whether it's because your post wasn't clear or he didn't read it, I don't know.

        • +2

You can use an Upgrade disk to clean install a Windows. It is not neccessary at all to have Windows installed on the machine prior to using the W7 Upgrade disk.
          Use this guide:

          http://www.winsupersite.com/article/windows-7/clean-install-…

    • +1

THankyou very much, valid for WA too.

Seems a great deal to me!! Especially as you can "install on a fresh hard drive" :)

  • +4

Can I vote +ve more than once?

  • just made my day :-)
This is a great price regardless of the vouchers.

  • How annoying. I purchased a Win 7 Home OEM copy during the promotion period because OEM is always cheaper than retail. Well, apparently not any more :-P

    • Family pack was always cheaper, but you're effectively buying 3 copies at a time. So unless you need 3 copies, you're still doing well :)

  • If my netbook is running windows 7 starter, can I use this? or this upgrade is for those Windows XP or Windows Vista machines only?

    • Microsoft says the upgrade is for XP and Vista only.

Who is eligible for this offer?

Customers with PCs running genuine Windows Vista or XP operating systems can upgrade to Windows 7 using the Family Pack

      http://www.microsoft.com/australia/windows/offers/windows-7-…

      • Ah, thank you. So, no good for me then :-/
But the deal deserves a positive vote anyway. ;-)

    • Your netbook may be running "starter" because it can't run the higher versions at an acceptable level. You'd certainly be able to buy this, format your netbook and install it though you would lose everything on the hard drive and might just get a slower netbook.

    • Yes it will do an anytime upgrade. Have a search on answers.microsoft.com for "windows 7 starter family". The microsoft guy said it will work.

    • You can upgrade, but I wouldn't recommend it. There's a significant spec jump from Starter to Home and I expect it to bog down significantly.

      • Been running Win 7 Ultimate on my Toshiba NB200 since I bought it in late 2009, it works fine but I did get 2 gig put in it. So, if you want to upgrade make sure you have 2 gig memory. Turning off some things helps too.

Went down to the cbd store and picked it up. Price is right + gift card to boot.

    What a top first post!!!

    • +2

Thanks. Seems I'm onto a winner. Workmate suggested I post it here when I told him about it. Had to wait 24 hours to make the posting, was pretty sure someone else would beat me to it. Got my box, so I'm happy, I'd say this is a 'while stocks last' kind of offer, wise to be quick.

  • +2

Is there anything stopping 3 friends from going in on this and installing on 3 separate computers, apart from perhaps the licence conditions?

    • +21

It's a Family Pack, so you would each need to marry one of your friend's sisters and then you should be okay.

      • +4

I think that would actually make them "extended family". To be family, they would need to marry each other. I think in some US states a blind eye is turned in regards to polygamy so this is an option. I think it's probably best that Muzzamo and his mates sit down with a drink over the weekend and have a good hard think about whether going down this path is worth the money they'd save on this deal.

        • +2

Polygamy has been illegal in all US states (including Utah) for over a century - though it caused quite a stir at the time, because of the Mormons.

Nonetheless, to qualify as "family" you could all marry three brothers (assuming you are all women) or join a religious order, where everyone is "Brother XYZ" or "Sister Mary XYZ".

    • muzzamo, you can do that fine. I did it back when Win7 came out and haven't had a problem. :)

  • DSE has introduced a "Collect in-store option" on their website.
This is if you think the product will sell out.

I did this for an Apple magic mouse I bought yesterday.
You go to check store —> Enter Post code —> and you will get "Collect instore" option with the search results.

You need to be registered with DSE to be able use it. They take the item away put it aside with your details. You dont have to pay. You pay only when you pick up.
They even send you a text with the details!

Wish they had this feature when the mad rush for MyTabs was on!

  • +2

do you get 3 licence keys or 1 licence key that can be activated 3 times?

    • -6

      3 sep ones

      • +6

The family pack i bought only has one product key. You can register it 3 times.

        • +1

Same here. Not sure if you transfer to another machine.

  • +4

Great deal, glad i held off on the JB Hifi deal from 2 weeks ago (only because the staff were stupid, one guy argued that a 3 licence family pack couldn't exist for that cheap and another said the fuel offer wasn't valid)

  • -3

I think the fuel offer is only valid on retail version of Microsoft® Windows® 7 full packaged product, NOT for the Upgrade Family Pack.
Also, On DSE Website mentioned 'If you have Windows XP or Windows Vista, you can purchase Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade. If you're running Windows 2000, a different operating system or have a computer that currently has no operating system, you'll need to purchase the FULL product.'

    • +2

The fuel offer site lists the home premium family pack as being eligible and seeing there's no mention of a full pack vs an upgrade pack anywhere online , id say its legit for this family pack offer. It's still a retail version.

I just sent off my receipt for the fuel so we'll see.

    • +1

I'm certain that the Family Pack is eligable. The terms and conditions at http://www.windows7fueloffer.com.au/form/ say so:

      — 2. Offer is only valid on one (1) or more genuine retail version of Microsoft® Windows® 7 full packaged products
      including Windows® 7 Home Premium, Windows® 7 Home Premium Family Pack, Windows® 7 Professional
and Windows® 7 Ultimate (Eligible Products) purchased from a retail outlet in Australia between
2 June 2011 and 22 July 2011 (Promotional Period). Windows® 7 Anytime Upgrade packs are excluded
      from this Offer.

The Windows 7 Home Premium Family Pack is only availabe as an upgrade there is no 'new installation' version of the Family Pack. Although the wording might be a bit confusing I read 'full packaged products' as shrink wrapped retail boxes, not OEM.

  • Got mine from Joondalup here in Perth, they didn't know about the $25 gift card but I told them, they checked it out and now they know :) So got my gift card.

DUDE. I AM GONNA RAGE. I JUST BOUGHT ULTIMATE FOR $150 WHERE I COULD GET 3 copies of home here.. IMAD? YESMAD!~

      • -2

I KNOW THAT, BUT 3 COPIES!

        U DERP. IMAD

  • I know it's called "Upgrade", but can I do clean install using this ?

  • +1

Just got the second last one from Queen Street DSE in Brisbane. Be careful though - what they have on the shelf is the green-boxed single version. She had to go out the back to find the orange-boxed 3 PC version.

Got the $25 gift card too. Great post!!

  • +4

I picked one up at lunch. They didnt have any on the shelves but went out back to get one. The guys was laughing when he saw the price come up on screen. He eyes widened even more when the system told him to give me a $25 gift card too. LOL. When I told him about the $50 fuel voucher, he stared at me with his mouth open.

Best post for laughing value bar none. Great deal.

      :)

  • Thank heavens for late night friday trading!

    • Late night… Friday? Where is this, Adelaide?

      • +2

Melbourne, in major shopping centres they close at like 9pm

        • I know the knox city and nunawading stores are open til 9 today.

        • Canberra too.

  • TOp deal!!!… thank you…. !!

  • So do we need to call MS to get the key to install this? I have XP (not sure if its a legit version though, as I bought it off a person I knew) and want to upgrade to Win 7, will this be the type of disk I'd use to upgrade?

    • If you want to upgrade from XP to Win7 and keep your settings/programs you will have to upgrade to Vista. Don't buy, don't activate, just upgrade to it. After you have upgraded to Vista you may upgrade to Windows 7.

Alternatively there are guides posted above on how to do a clean install using this disc (formatting your drive and losing all your data)

  • So i have got a question here…

The websites provided above were mainly saying while you "should be able to" install the "upgrade" version on a blank HDD straight away, you might need to try different alternative methods. That just makes it a little uncertain whether you WILL DEFINITELY BE able to do a clean install from this upgrade version.

In my case, I am not interested in any other method here and I am strictly after a clean straight install specifically. e.g. I want to install it on a brand new/formatted/empty HDD straight away after i turn on the PC and put the disk in. In other word, just like what a standard WIN 7 version should have been.

Can anyone out there who has bought this now confirm this specific version here can be installed the way i want? If yes, it's a go for me! Thanks for the help!

    • +2

Ok, I just built a new computer for a relative, hence why I purchased this family pack, so it was a completely new/fresh hard drive.

INstalled 64bit no problems (do not enter the key through installation process), follow method 2 on this site after you've booted to the desktop for the first time, takes 30 seconds - http://www.winsupersite.com/article/windows-7/clean-install-…

After that, all activated fine and installing windows updates! :)

      • Awesome! thanks for that

  • I have a question: -

How can I upgrade from "Windows 7 Starter" to Windows 7 Home Premium" without disk?

My netbook is Dell Mini Inspiron 1012 and it does not have CD-ROM.

Can I download and install it with the same OEM from the "Windows 7 - Home Premium" package box from DSE?

"Windows 7 Starter" is okay but I won't be able to put picture of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley on Desktop background unless I require to upgrade from Windows 7 Starter.

    Can anyone help me please?

    Thanks!

  • Good price, but only if it can be installed as a "fresh" install. There is a few posts suggesting you can, but I wonder what happens when you try the 2nd and 3rd activations on other computers.

From the DSE website "If you're running Windows 2000, a different operating system or have a computer that currently has no operating system, you'll need to purchase the full product."

  • +1

I'm going to get this tomorrow! I've got XP MCE on my laptop, Vista on my mum's PC, and XP Pro on her laptop. She doesn't like Vista. I've been using XP for the last 7yrs.

This is the deal i've been waiting for, and didn't know it.

Not sure what all this "fresh install" talk is about, what are the advantages? Is this only for people who are putting it on a new hard drive?

    Thanks OP.

    • +1

Vista will upgrade no problem your XP will need to be re-installed (clean install). Might take you a bit of time backing up your stuff first, you can automate it using Windows Easy Transfer off the Windows 7 install CD though provided you have an external drive with enough free space.

      Here's a URL dingdong555 posted above:
      http://www.winsupersite.com/article/windows-7/clean-install-…

      Check it out.

Alternatively you can upgrade your XP install to Vista (You don't need to enter a CD Key during install, they give you 30 day grace time). Don't activate it (you probably dont have a spare key to do that anyway), just upgrade to it and when you are on the desktop then reboot and upgrade to Windows 7

    • +2

      I'm no IT pro, but…

It's so you remove all the crud from 7 years of Windows use - and install the Operating System without it trying to merge vastly different operating systems - not to mention the registry keys, hidden files, and anything else out of the ordinary.

Whenever I do an install, or any other major mishap, I do a clean install (often with a brand new HDD too and retire the old drive to back-ups).

Just remember to back-up your data files and list the programs you actually use, so you remember to re-install them.

  • are we meant to get a confirmation email right after we sign up for the fuel voucher? i havn't got an email yet, and i signed up yesterday.

    • I didn't get an email either. Registered last night.

    • Also didn't get email after registering

      • caus in the T&C they want us to send in confirmation form and legible photocopy to somewhere? so how do we do this?

        • I saw that too. They want a photocopied version sent to their PO Box and entries aren't valid till this is received.

Is the online version a red herring?

    • From http://www.microsoft.com/australia/windows/offers/fueloffer/…

c.print out your claim confirmation with your claim number (emailed upon submission of your claim form online) and post this claim confirmation with a legible photocopy (hand written receipts or delivery dockets will not be accepted) of the purchase receipt to the address specified on the website referred to above in 7

      • the T&C must be wrong, at 7 (c) and 9.
or why would the online form invite you to upload the receipt instead?

  • +1

Good deal. Just purchased at Dick Smith Southland. They had about 10 in stock. Person in front of me buying the same (fellow OzBargainer?).

Got a $25 Wish Gift card which I have already spent at Big W and Safeway.

    • Good job getting a Wish Gift card instead - I only got the DSE giftcard.

      • +1

They can be used at any woolworths branded store. It might have a pic of the dick smith logo on the front but its a Wish Gift card which can be used at woolies/bigw etc…

  • Fantastic deal. Got my 5% staff discount too :)

Just hope the pack is redeemable for petrol voucher

  • Just got it today, from DSE Indooroopilly, Brisbane. It was the only one left on that shelf, but there may have been others in the cabinet underneath.
The price tag had $227, or something similar, and the clerk had to scan it to reveal the true price, and also the bonus $25 gift card.
I got a Wish card, as good as cash, use at Woolies, or BWS, or Caltex. I actually went to BWS afterwards and spent $28, but forgot to use the card, lol. Next time.

There is a sheet in the box, telling me how to upgrade from XP. Nothing about installing Vista first. I think i will do a clean install. I hope it wont affect my Nokia music subscription.

  • I wonder if these Caltex fuel vouchers can be used at the Woolies/Caltex outlets? Or a Caltex only outlet…?

  • Thanks for this, the voucher also went toward the $50 Apple BT keyboard:)

  • did anyone get a confirmation email when lodging your details

  • +3

Meh Windows 7 should be free for Vista customers, no other industry would get away this easily with selling a dud product for a premium price….

    • +2

I thought Windows 7 is basically the Service Pack that Vista SHOULD have had

    • +1.

Windows 8 is already around the corner.
Looks like a late 2012 arrival.
